For people that wants their VVM back, here you go!
Not my work, just stumbled upon it and would like to
spread the good news.
Happy Rooting

I get an error flashing this. sideload/tmp/... error. CM7 VAlpha 3
Edit: Got it to work by unpacking the zip and using Root Explorer to put the file in /system/app and setting 777 permissions.

You get that when its a bad download. Also I've read it could be cause its from your phone browser or comp browser. Try out different options and report back

So just to be clear. Now if I screw (soft brick?) my phone I can just use the 2.3.3 sbf and root that correct. Yay no more going all the way back. I can just root GB and restore my nandroid I made with eclipse Rom running.

Correctimundo.
I have had troubles running the script provided even the v7 that is posted now i have re-written the instructions and will compile an app later that can be run on windows to make sure the paths are all ok. Creating the local.prop file and not getting into the shell first was acting up on my XP box. I have a party to head out to but once I get back I will get the app written and tested again. Also I cannot take screens with drocap on the X2, I think it's a Tegra issue can anyone confirm or know of a screen shot app that works on Tegras
Just used AndroSS but it works without root on the X2 but at least i can get some screens of the terminal and a few other places now.
I'm Not Sure I'm Following, There's A Script With The 1 Click Program?
Yes there is a .bat file but running that did not work so I compared the steps and was looking over the command set and it was not properly sending the shell commands on my workstation. It may have been an issue with custom paths I run at the office. Could have been a windows version issue as well. If its written in vb.net I can call a vbscript to use send keys which will prevent that.

[Q] Anyone try PDroid?

I am trying to find a way to block permissions to certain apps after installation. I came across this app called PDroid but requires a patched ROM using a linux script. App can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357056.
Has anyone tried this app?

Thanks I will try it out this week.
UPDATE: Bad news bears. I flashed the patch as described (mounted system, wiped cache) but the system went into a boot loop. The boot animation kept cycling over and over again.
Did the restore zip work at least? That's the first I've heard of a bout loop caused by it.
It only edits 3 files, none of which could possibly cause more than a boot loop in any case.
EDIT: May have been a corrupted download, I'll be sure to post MD5, hashes next time. Sorry about that!

I don't think it was a corrupt download. I just created a patch myself using the Windows program and it also produced a boot loop. I restored from a nandroid the first time, trying out the restore file right now.
Alright sounds good. That's still really is though, and I have no idea why it happens. Did you flash any addons on top of the stock ROM?

Nope. Just the patch. Although the second time I didn't mount the system. Is this a necessary step? I didn't see anything in the OP of the PDroid thread.
Possible reasons for failure:
* Corrupt download first time
* Second time, didn't mount system
What is this "If you "integrated sys Dalvik into ROM" with Titanium Backup, you will have to undo it"? I am using TB but I'm not sure if this applies to my situation.
I noticed the ROM must be deodexed and I didn't see any odex filetypes in the system/framework directory. That should be the only place they appear right?
On a better note, the restore file works =) Thanks for the help
Yes, you should mount /system in CWM, as I didn't manually edit the patch to add in auto-mounting.
I just tried on Unnamed 2.2.1 and experienced the boot loop as well (created the patch using the Windows patcher). Restore zip works fine, and tried with and without mounting /system in CWM. There apparently is something in Unnamed that the code doesn't like
Too bad, sounds like a good program (I also use LBE and wanted to use it along side).

It's a great app. I am running it on a Hellraised ROM. None of the AT&T base ones work. I sent the dev an error log from UnNamed 1.3.1 and he knows what the problem is and will try to address it in a future patcher release. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22111242&postcount=757)

Thanks! I guess I didn't go far enough back in the dev's thread (DUH!) so hopefully he's got the info he needs to fix it. I'd really like to try it sometime.
The developer of PDroid has released an update to his patcher that fixes the bootloop issue for AT&T roms. I just installed using UnNamed v1.32 and it works great.
Feels good to block all of those permissions.

apk installation help

So basically I can't install apk files on my phone. It's a recent issue since I switched over to the newest fj stock mod rom. I download an .apk, I put it on my phone but when I click on it to install it, the option to install it won't respond. I can click cancel. but I can't click install... I can't seem to figure out why it won't do it, and I'm sure it's something stupid that I'm not getting...
This exact thing happened to me.. The ONlY way to fix it is to flash new roms sorry
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
That is not the only way to fix it. You can put the apk in the data/app folder and reboot and it should install. You do have unknown sources checked right?

assuming you flash roms as a solution, would you have a few backups?
juice defender:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.latedroid.juicedefender&hl=en
As rquiett mentioned.....put the app into the data/app folder via any good root explorer app, then reboot.
The apk can also be placed into the system/app folder for the same outcome. the major difference here, is the device now sees the apk as a system app, and will not be removable via traditional methods like a user app. It would need removal by the root explorer app that placed it there.
Flashing "the same" build to get an app, is generally not needed, however, I have used this method many times over the years after I removed a system app I needed back.
You can simply flash the "same" rom over the top of the existing rom, and the pre-loaded rom apps are back.
Note: you must wipe the caches after using this method, or data corruption could occur. "cache and dalvik cache"
Long story short:
Root explorer app to place into data/app......or system/app
and if you are feeling adventurous....then flash the "same" base build over the top of your current build, then wipe caches and reboot.
Standard disclaimers apply....g

Can we put S3 S-voice on S4?

I have a weird question. I now have a Verizon S4, ME7 baseband, rooted. I used to have a S3. I use s-voice via Bluetooth dialing for voice dialing and texting all the time. It worked flawlessly on my S3 but sucks on the S4. It won't find some contacts, despite reading the names back to me perfectly while telling me it didn't find them.
I remember trying the S4 apk on the S3 when the S4 apk was released and finding it didn't work well for me. I reverted back to the stock S3 s voice.
My question now is, can I do the reverse? Can I put the S3 S-voice on the S4? Does anyone have the latest S3 s-voice apk? I don't have the S3 anymore (nor would I know how to get the apk off if I did).
Thanks

I use apps from the s3 and note 2 all the time, most work and for those that don't I use apktool to mod them to work. In the case of s voice I imagine the app will natively work and it sounds like samsung tts doesn't have much to do with your issue. Im not at home to test or post it but you could always download a stock gs3 rom and extract s voice from it to try.

Unfortunately since your on me7 I cant make you a zip also you won't be able to make a nandroid back up either. This is because me7 doesn't allow you to have a custom recovery. Changing the permissions is pretty straight forward though, just make it match the other apps in the system/app folder, you'll also have to mount the system folder r/w.

Thanks for all your help. I extracted the file - called "Voicetalk" as far as I can tell. I pasted it into the system app folder using Root Explorer, changed the permissions, and nothing happened. I then realized that maybe I need to actually run the installer - tapping the file (which did indeed have the S3 S-Voice icon) gave me the option to install. I ran the installer, it showed the permissions, and then it failed to install with the only message showing: "Application not installed".
I deleted the app from the system folder.
I then tried again by first freezing the native S-Voice app. I tried installing the apk directly from the SD card and had the same result - not installed.
So, unless I am doing it incorrectly, I think the S3 S-voice will not install directly onto the S4. Any ideas as to a way to make it work?
Thanks

What you originally did was fine, just rename the original s-voice .apk to .bak then do what you originally did (move the s3 s-voice .apk to /system/app then change permissions) then reboot your phone. Also you can check to make sure the owner is root for both owner and group. I think it might have worked had you just rebooted. Alternativley you can just copy and paste the apk to your internal sd then use rom toolbox and go to app manager, tap the upper left corner (where it shows a little rubix cube android person) then go down to + APK Installer and select the s-voice apk that you copied to your internal sd card. Afterward check in app manager and make sure s-voice is a system app, if not convert it to a system app. Remeber to reboot your phone after it installs. If all else fails send me the .apk and ill figure it out and/or mod it to work.
You ROCK!!
Thank you very much for your help. The key was this line you wrote: "just rename the original s-voice .apk to .bak " I had not done that and the S3 version would not install. Once I renamed the original s-voice, I was able to install the S3 version. Rebooted, and voila. Now it recognizes, without a hitch, the names that the S4 version was unable to find. So now I'm in business!

Recovery rebooted after about 5 minutes and the file is still there. This file is stubborn. But it has to be the one causing the issues.
