[Q] USB connect with Windows 7 x64 - PLEASE! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I've had my AT&T galaxy S2 for a week now, upgraded from the Captivate. Mildly impressed, but very very disappointed that i can't even connect it to my laptop for file transfers--because I have win 7 x64. Even my captivate connected to it!
I talked to samsung, they don't have a win7 x64 driver for it yet. They recommended the Kies Air application, which i tried, and is so antiquated and SLOWWW that it is unbearable to use. For example, transferring photos must be done max 20 at a time, and at a very slow transfer rate--when it works. Other times upon tranfer it says "Error: Network error occurred"
Oh and then Samsung's next piece of advice was to just reinstall my OS to the 32 bit version. WHAT!??!
If i can't transfer music and movies from computer to my phone, and i can't transfer my pictures from my pictures from the phone to my computer... i've actually downgraded from my captivate.
Anyone have any solutions? Or do i return this new phone, which i anxiously awaited and purchased the day it came out...?

Uninstall ANY and ALL drivers that have to do with Kies or a Samsung phone. Reboot ur computer and phone. Install Kies and see what happens. I had that problem when I had a couple droid phones but uninstalling and reinstalling everything seems to fix it.

Works fine on my Win7 64 laptop and desktop.

entropism -- what drivers are you using, the 32 bit ones?

Have you tried alternate USB ports on your computer? Does it show anything or give you any indication that a connection is being made?
Oh and I'm on W7 x64 myself and haven't had any issues but installed Kies before I did anything.

it shows the battery charging, phone beeps when plugged in... OS says "installing device driver..." and then shortly says "(X) Driver was not successfully installed." and that is the end of story so far.

.. and you guys that say you are successfully connected, is this for full USB download mode (like my captivate where it just sees it basically like flash drive on your computer)? or is it via the kies interface? thanks for all responses.

The drivers on the Samsung site for the GS2. It was working fine without them, but I installed for the heck of it. I'm not using KIES to connect, just enabling USB storage on the phone when I connect.

Mine is for full USB mode so I can see my sdcard contents, etc. It also works fine with Kies.

Also try a NEW data cable, after a while they get flaky.

There are two USB modes on AT&T GS2: the default MTP mode and the Mass Storage mode. To enable Mass Storage mode, you will have to go to Setting->Wireless settings and network->USB utilities.
I have no problem on two of my 64-bit Win7. Drivers automatically downloaded and installed.
Looks like your Win64 install has some issues.

Well guys, i've tried uninstalling all KIES and samsung drivers/softwares, rebooting, then reinstalling the sg2 driver from samsung's site, new data cable, still no luck.
How do I enable USB storage on the SG2? I guess it was automatically enabled on the captivate. I'm a computer guy, it seems like i'm being slow on this, or this is really not user friendly. Thank you guys for the responses and help so far.

AH HA
AH HA! Finally.
Using the googles and the internets, i found this link -- and using "Method 2" as described, i got my sg2 connected in USB download mode... and it worked just like i needed it to.
So glad to have answered my own question here, but also appreciate the help and responses! Hopefully this link will help someone else out.

[Q] Device not recognized by ANY computer now

Hey guys, I did try searching, but if I missed a post please link.
Problem is this: Randomly at the beginning of the week 3G stopped working, and along with that (probably unrelated, but never-the-less...) the phone, when plugged into any computer, would not be recognized ("Unrecognized Device" and under device status is it would say "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"). I did fix the 3G issue, but the phone still won't connect to any computer.
I've tried on computers with and without samsung drivers, with the phone both in and out of debug mode, usb storage both on and off. Currently on my PC it sees that it is a samsung device, but it has the yellow triangle, signifying that it still cannot start the device. Cannot ADB into it obviously, and cannot even get ODIN to see it when in download mode. Yes, I've also tried 2 different cables.
Using Windows 7 on all the computers I've tried it on (don't own anything older unfortunately/fortunately) and currently using ComRom 2 RC 2 PBJ (though this started on ComRom 1.3, and have tried the OTB kernel as well) thoughts?
Thanks guys!
Have you tried booting to CWM while plugged into the usb? That usually fixes it for me.
what i do is go to device managers look for your device and make sure the right drivers are installed once you install the drivers everything should be good

just gave that a shot. new dialog box popped up "usb device not recognized".
I'm probably going to try and go back to stock, but I'm not sure if that is really the issue.
Same thing here.. no idea what to do.. last time this happened I installed/uninstalled drivers until I thought I was going to puke.. even now I'm on a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 with SP1.. so .. this is really starting to suck!! Plug in the device and INSTANTLY "device unknown"... Yeah.. right!
Have both of you tried changing usb setting from mass storage to ask on connection? Uncheck usb debugging, go into usb settings change it from mass storage to ask on connection, go back and turn on usb debugging, then connect phone to computer.

I will do this promptly and post if there is a success story.. har har!! Thanks for the tip.. we'll see..
/EDIT/ Does nothing... nothing at all.. I hear the sound when USB is connected to Win7 ... then immediately says "unknown device" doesn't even seem to try and pull drivers.. it's almost ready to fly out the window...
/EDIT2/ Well I just got one step closer... I basically uninstalled ALL USB hosts, etc. Restarted, they installed.. then plugged phone in.. recognized, got the "installing device drivers", then FAILED to install... I'm lost.
Now here is the actual message that I am getting, I can only assume OP is too...

Oddly enough, I'm not getting that. I'm getting error 10, device failed to start. I'm sure these are related somehow.
Also, I did try the above suggestion, with no success. I did notice though after I unchecked "usb debugging", told it to ask on connection, then re-enabled usb debugging i get "no accessibility services" which I'm not sure is an issue, but it is never-the-less an error message. does everyone get that message?
thanks for the help everyone

I get that message everytime I check usb debugging. Just click OK and everything should be fine.
All I know is that it's out-right ridiculous.. I seriously doubt there is anything wrong with either of our phones since this has worked fine to this point.. I'm just trying to get back to stock using ODIN .. but can't .. I am so frustrated I can't figure it out..
Something interesting here.. I plugged the USB cable into a port and windows said it was an unknown device.. I just plugged the cable in.. bad cable issues??
I have been attempting to fix this very problem for weeks. Nothing has worked. It won't even recognize the phone in Recovery or Download mode (Odin or Heimdall). I'm getting tempted to request a phone replacement.
For me it started right after I installed blackberry drivers on Win7 x64. Does anyone else have this in common? Maybe recently installed other USB drivers? Perhaps the problem and the install are mere coincidence? Anyway I ordered a new USB cable so I'll give that a try.
Also, has anyone trided naven's format utility? I'm starting to think this may be the signs of the USB port dying.
I wonder.. will there be an issue for service if I have a rooted phone with custom rom installed? That's the only issue right now about sending the phone back.. and the more I think and mess around with it.. if I hold the plug snug in the phone and wiggle the cable some, I can connect and disconnect... I think my cable is messed up ...
I think I have my issue resolved... Usb cable is bad... My buddy has the same cable end to his phone charger and it will charge my phone... And now my cable won't even do that... Need to find a usb cable to verify but it seems these cables are very sensitive... Check your cable OP...

I will update on if my issue is fixed when I get my usb cable on wednesday. Fyi, the samsung cable is available on amazon with prime shipping for around $2-3.

Just picked up a USB cable from Walmart .. not a bad deal and guess what? Fixed 100% ... Was a bad USB cable. Never again will I use the Samsung USB cables.. only lasted about 3 months.. LoL.. All fixed!!! YAY!!!! OP - I think you will be all set as well once you get your new cable..
Replaced the cable and I still have the error. =(
I'm not sure what else I can even try...
EDIT: Fixed it. Uninstalled all USB drivers from my system and let windows reinstall them. toggled USB debugging on the device and mock locations on and it works. What an odd problem..
I Also solved this issue with a new cable. I had tried a different cable and still had the same problem.
So I wasted much of two days troubleshooting. Finally arranged for a warranty replacement but still had the same problem. I was getting ready to do a clean installation of windows and it struck me. Try a new cable, even though the two cable test ruled that out.
I figured that was worth a try before rebuilding windows.
The new cable fixed the problem. The 2 cable test should have revealed this. It's possible I had two issues and the warranty replacement and the cable fixed it.
Sorry that a second cable didn't fix the problem for the person above me.

Touchpad not recognized connected to PC, asking me to format

Hi, i was at work today and the PC is running XP. I connected the TP for the first time and it would not recognize. It was connected and running but i could not eject or see the Touchpad or any files. I had to pull the plug without ejecting, did this 2 times.
Now i am at home and when i plug it into my Windows 7 PC it is asking me if i want to format the disc.
When i close the box out it states this-
E:/is not accessible
"The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted." It keeps on asking me to format the disk.
Please help!
I had this same problem and found that if I restarted my machine opened Windows Explorer or my computer then plugged in the touchpad only while in a vertical position it worked. I think the connector or cable on mine is a little screwy.. I have also heard to make sure you are using the usb cable that came with it...

You must have the novacom drivers installed on your pc for it to recognize the touchpad. DO NOT FORMAT. If you format the tp under windows, you will have a nice paperweight to add to your desktop. Google novacom. Get the drivers for the pc and everything will work as it should.

I had the right Novacom drivers already installed. The system files got corrupted from pulling the plug earlier in the day. I talked to an HP tech through chat and he told me to format. I did, it doesn't format the whole file system, just the temp. files.
It was working and seemed to be back to regular, but then started acting up again. Pretty soon i was getting the palm.com/rom error code.
After the negative feedback i gave the previous rep. i received a phone call from a US rep. later that night. She is going to send me another TP, i am giving $150 for them to hold til i send mine back.
This thing is too damn buggy, i am selling it on CL. Sold already for $200, getting a Transformer Prime.

Try it on another computer first, make sure you are using the cable that came with it. Try after a fresh reboot of your pc... I know it seems strange but I can only get mine to work after a fresh reboot with the stock cable and the touchpad in a verticle position but it works...

Then yesterday evening i plugged into the computer to charge rather than walking to the other room to get my charger and i heard the Da dum of it recognizing my phone...it installed it and up pops the device...

Usb mass storage mode? HELP!!!

Ok so I just upgraded yesterday from the HTC inspire and I must say I'm liking the S3. Except for one thing, no usb mass storage mode? Duuuwwwhhhaaaatttt??? This is awful...just awful.. I work night shifts and play minecraft a lot at work
D) and alwayed used my inspire for transfering the save data on my work computer to my personal desktop at home... I NEED this FIXED.!! I have the 16GB sd card I pulled out of my inspire shoved in the S3's ext-sd slot and would love to know how to use it as a usb mass storage like I did on my inspire.. I have tried the easy ums app and it doesn't work :/ so here I am, humbly asking for help from you geniuses...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Not sure if this is what you're asking but here goes...
I just started using the S3 as well, upgraded from an S2 T989 (T-mobile)
On the S2, when I connect to the USB port, I can "turn on" usb mass storage mode to connect to the PC and I'm not seeing that option here on the S3.
However, when I connect the phone to my PC, I get the following options:
- Media device (MTP): automatically checked
- Camera (PTP)
And when I check on "camera (PTP)", my PC would recognize the phone as SGH-T999. And when I click on it, I would have two options:
- Card (External SD)
- Phone (Internal SD)
From here, I can just copy and paste whatever from PC to SD card and vice versa.

Well let me start with this then..on my inspire, I could plug it up to any computer and it would show up as a disk drive and I could transfer baby file back and forth at my will.
Now that I have my S3, I've realised that they've done any with usb mass storage and adopted mtp. Which doesn't work for me. I get a message 'cannot copy "file name" the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.'
I can also connect through ptp and it will transfer most files, but not all. It will get to a certain point it gives me the good ole 'cannot copy "file name" the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.' message.
So overall, my question is simply this, is there a way to enable usb mass storage for the external sd card on my sgs3? Either by fixing easy ums to work for a 1747 or by installing another app that I don't know about.
Btw, my s3 is rooted, running stock Rom and stock kernel, stock everything. I've installed busybox as well.

Well add me to the list of: MTP sucks! This is pretty awful, I mean if there is a work-around fine, but we shouldn't HAVE TO work around just to get Mass Storage support.
As of now we are stuck with MPT.
Works ok though I guess, I can move files back and forth. You can also try using a wifi explorer if your on the same network.

Alrighty!! I've done some snooping around and found this!!!:
Here's a thread for the AT&T S3 on Mass Storage, requires some tinkering though.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768752&highlight=mass+storage
So basically if you follow all the instructions, your 1747 will be able to mount its external sd card as a usb mass storage. Tried it myself!!! Amazing!!! Haha!!! Life is good once again...
In addition to the above steps, I also had to do something else. I'm running windows 7, but I don't see why it would be any different for any other windows, and after I installed gscript I had to go to device manager in windows, find your phone (should be under portable devices) and then right clicked and updated driver software. After that finished, the pc had to reboot. After reboot, I ran the scripts in gscript... Aaannnndddd... BAM.! MAGIC.!
I hope this helps those who are frustrated with their 1747 as well... this is a temp fix until a better one comes out... buuuuttt... cheers

I'm not using the I747 (I take it thats the T Mobile branded version), Im in fact using the SCH-I535, Verizon version. Due note that the phone does contain GSM radios so I am able to use it on T for voice (perfect!) and edge data (expected but better then nothing)...
I'm assuming SMS & MMS work as well, albeit untested.

BAM.! MAGIC.!
I hope this helps those who are frustrated with their 1747 as well... this is a temp fix until a better one comes out... buuuuttt... cheers

Also, i just ran into this problem... the fix i mentioned above worked on my work computer but now that im home and i tried it..it didnt work.. :/
BUT!! i figured out the problem. The difference between my work and home computer? Kies... idk if it was that progam itself or just the drivers that came along with it but regardless i uninstalled kies and all the drivers associated with it. After that i plugged in my phone, ran the "mount" script and voila. MAGIC ONCE AGAIN!
Just thought i would inform the masses on what ive done so far to fix this problem
There is another option....
Get yourself a little adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0027YYMU6/
Then you can plug any USB drive directly into that.. then the adapter into the phone.
Your phone will see it as a normal USB Drive... you can then use any filemanager to transfer files from the phones SD to that USB drive... Unplug the USB, pop it into a computer and you're all set.
I'll admit it's a bit kludgy, but until storage mode becomes available, you can use this on OS's that won't work properly with the existing MTP.
NOTE: Might want to buy a FEW adapters... i bought 1, worked great.. friend bought 2 more.. neither worked.. same brand etc... I have 2 more on the way just in case..but for .79 plus free shipping no reason not to buy half a dozen hehe

Yea, that would work... but im more on the side of "my phone should do this" lol dont know why they completely removed usb mass storage... they shouldve at least made it optional in the settings or something, ya know? those little adapters would work but idk how id feel about having to carry around an adapter just so i can transfer files..
Heres a scenerio:
Say my friend calls me up and wants a file that i have on my computer, so i use that adapter and transfer it to my phone, go to his house only to realize i accidentally left the adapter stuck in my computer at home :/ thats a pain in the you know what lol
Just a thought haha

The WHY actually is documented around here somewhere... the short version is, with the way the OS is written, mounting the card as USB storage makes it unavailable to the system. Since most of the newer Androids OS use the SD card more heavily (such as A2SD type stuff) it would render applications 'broken' whenever the USB was plugged in.
That's the official story.. I'm not sure I buy it myself as I've seen apps that let you use the SD card on my original EVO AND have USB mode enabled just fine.. granted transfer rates sucked, and occassionally a file would get corrupted, but it worked 99% of the time. I don't know what 'tricks' those apps used to get it to work, but I don't see why Google couldn't use those same tricks directly in the OS.
Another option btw.. is Wifi Explorer Pro. If you're PC is on the same WiFi network, you can run the app then go to a webpage on your PC to upload/download files as needed. It's not as fast as a cable.. but it does work pretty well and is simple to use.

[Q] Wont connect to PC through USB

Okay so my Sprint HTC One Max will not connect to my PC - Windows 7 x64. It will however charge while connected but it never prompts that its "installing drivers" when connected. The USB notifications never appear in the notifications bar on my HTC. I've downloaded the latest HTC Sync, uninstalled, re installed, several times. I have enabled and disabled USB debugging several times. Restarted PC and phone several times. The phone is not rooted. Fastboot is not enabled on the phone. My LG G2 connects through MTP with no problems. I've tried all USB ports on my PC.
I'm not sure what else to do. Please help!

You need to install HTC Drivers for Win7 64 prior to plugging in your phone. A quick google search landed me this:
HTC Driver Installer x86 and x64 - Filename: HTCDriver 4.1.0.001.exe Size: 14.81 MB (15528968 bytes).
It shouldn't be too difficult for you to hunt this file down yourself. It is probably a good idea to make sure HTCSync is completely uninstalled from your machine. Once you've installed the driver exe, plug in your phone and wait for it to appear in device manager (I kept device manager open through the entire process). At this point you should see debugging messages on your phone.
I'm not sure what your ultimate goal is but after a handful of headaches, I was able to use the win7 64 machine that I had at my disposal to successfully run the rumrunner tool and ultimately achieve S-Off! Good Luck!

Still no luck. I completely removed HTC Sync and anything HTC related. Installed the HTC Driver Installer 4.1.0.001.exe and connected my phone but still nothing happens.

Did the HTC drivers install correctly?
Driver or not, SOMETHING should happen when you plug your phone into your pc like new hardware notification. Is anything reflected in device manager when you're plugged in? Successful attachment you should see HTC, or HTC phone, or Android phone, or a yellow exclamation point saying no driver or driver incorrectly installed.
Most definitely a Windows issue. Windows PCs are a PITA. No driver headaches with Mac or Linux. Have another machine around you can try it out on?

Yes they installed correctly. I'm not seeing anything appear in the device manager. I also tried it on my wife desktop and I get the same result. I've tried 4 different USB cables that I have laying around the house.
I'm starting to believe it might just be something wrong with this particular phone.

It's seeming like you may have a bit of tinkering around to do. You DO have USB debugging enabled while you're trying to connect right?
Troubleshooting Windows drivers is a pain. Check out this post I stumbled over, may help you out:

Here's a couple links to newer versions of HTC Drivers in case you want to try them:

Yeah I came across that page as well. I've tried with Debuf off and on.
I came across this page where he seems to be having the same problem, only thing is my device is stock, not rooted, no roms, or backups.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541464
Anyway I can work off of that?
The only thing I've done to my phone that could of possibly affected it was when I attempted a bootloader unlock from HTCDev.com.
I followed the steps up to step 5 and entered "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" into the cmd and got the message "waiting for device.." which is when I discovered my phone wasnt connecting though USB.
When connected the USB in fastboot it says "FASTBOOT AC" instead of USB
Not sure if something could of happened in between that.
I was having issues with htc drivers today and finally found the right drivers after countless install/remove attempts,im running xp and it is a pita hope you find the right ones!!

Yes, the One Max comes with HTCSync and necessary drivers. In a perfect world everything would install the first time you plug in your phone and all would be hunky dory. However... well we all know the reality of this game.

Well today the phone shut off and will not turn back on. Plugging it into the wall charger does absolutely nothing so I finally decided to call HTC and just let them handle it. +thanks for the help neodiver

Hold both volume buttons with power button until back and home buttons lights flash. It will restart after that. Happened to me a few times.

Anytime. You're probably better off calling early in the game before you're eyeballs deep. They can't break your balls for mucking around in your One Max's innards. Hopefully they'll swap you out and you can start over fresh!
Good Luck!

Tried that. Tried both volume buttons, up, down, and all around lol.
HTC also told me to try holding the volume down then power for about 5 secs, then continue to only hold the volume button. Didn't work either.
Kinda crazy... has to be a mobo issue or something because the phone was still flawless.
