I was dumb and deleted something... - HTC Aria Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

... I shouldn't have.
I was fooling around with my HTC Screen lock apk using Titanium Backup. I "backed up" the application, and then uninstalled thinking I could just restore it. Now Titanium won't restore it, and I'm stuck with the Vanilla screen lock. I know it will cause problems with my HTC alarm app... so I'm trying to restore the HTC screen lock, but can't seem to do it.
I've downloaded what appear to be the APK and ODEX files, but when I place them in the system/app folder and reboot, they don't seem to get recognized...
Any advice?

I tried using the Titanium Backup I had made, no go.
Tried placing it in system/app with Root Explorer, no go.
Tried several permissions combinations (I believe you just need user R/W), no go.
Finally it dawned on me to just to a nand restore (my last backup was a month old), but I just chose to restore system, and it's back just fine.
Thanks for the help, though.

Your welcome.wish I could've been more help,I always forget about the advanced restore options.

You probably could've just flashed the same rom again over top

[Q] BlurCamera Help

My phone's unlocked/rooted.
Stupidly, to free up some space in Dropbox, I deleted some Titanium Backups and at some point, while moving files around, I deleted BlurCamera.apk while in Titanium Backup - basically unistalled it instead of freezing it... and guess what, no backup to restore from.
I'm stock and use other apps for video recording / picture taking but would like to revert back. I've tried a few different scenarios and after rebooting each time - no luck.
In layman's terms, what else can I do try. I've already downloaded the stock .apk and .odex files but so far, nada.
Any help, greatly appreciated.
First of all, please do not double post. I noticed you had started another thread in the "General" sub-forum.
Anyways, if you have Root Explorer (or any other root file manager) you can just move the apk and odex files to /system/app, set the permissions (rw-r--r--), and reboot. See if that works.

Sorry about that. That method failed. Seems that by uninstalling the app through TB and not freezing it, something else is going on.

What recovery are you using? Have you tried "Fixing permissions" and "Wipe Cache/Dalvik" after moving the files into the appropriate place?

Help restoring app

Just rooted, installed superuser, ran a full titanium backup. Then started clearing out some apps and accidentally removed 2 instances of clock 1.0 (why are there 2?). I thought it was just the widgets, but apparently it was the whole app/alarm clock etc. I go into titanium backup, find the app, click restore data+app, and it just gets stuck on the restoring screen. I've tried a few times, rebooted the phone, and it'll stay there for 10+ minutes. What's going on? Should I try a different method?
If it makes a difference, the backup file is currently just on my phone. I have no sd card yet so I just backed it up on my phone and was going to transfer to computer/sd card when I get it.
Really? Anyone?
If it helps I now have an sd card and transferred the titanium backup onto my cpu as well.
Copy clock.apk there manually.

I'm assuming that's a manual Trans from my CPU to my phone...what program can I use? Where can I find the file or should I try again with the I've I backed up

Need help still.I downloaded an app installer and downloaded two different apps one package one just clock..neither install using the installer. not sure if my issue is with using the installer since its a sys file or wrong apps.... Never done this before so don't know how compatibility works and everything

Use Root Explorer. Go to the file you backed up, copy it (you may have to unzip it first), click the back button until you see only a "/" in the upper left, the click on system, then app, hit the Mount R/W button on the upper left and paste it. Reboot and you should be good to go...
If not, you may have to set permissions, but I find that they are usually good by default.

Ok I'm using ES File Explorer (since its free). I found three clock related entries in titanium backup. They all begin with com.sec.android.app.clockpackage.****
one is .apk, one is .properties, one is .tar. Since I'm unsure of what I uninstalled (2 instances of clock 1.0 shows up as being removed in titanium) I tried copying all 3. Using ES I selected all three, copy to, system, app, paste. No other apps showed up under system>app. Not sure if this is standard when copying to or if that means theres an issue. Anyway after trying to move the files, each came up as failed to copy.
In the app also if I just click on one item, such as the .apk, it will load a screen with a clock icon asking if I want to install. That fails as well.

Titanium Headache

Titanium has been giving me problems for awhile. I haven't flashed anything for a couple months so it hasn't been a big deal, but today when I upgraded the firmware and wound up with some "issues", I really needed to be able to let Titanium do its thing and restore my stuff back like usual. No go.
I'm talking with the TB development people, but in case any of you masters out there have run across this, I thought I'd share.
After a new flash, TB doesn't access my backups. It sees them; they are all crossed out and the summary says I have none to restore. I can tap one and it opens up, but all of the boxes are grayed out. (See pic). Then, if I re-download the app from the store and install it, TB will access it and allow me to restore data only.
So in order to "restore" my apps, I have to download them one at a time from the market first. Any ideas?
I'd force close TB, move the files to a new folder, configure TB to use the new folder

I had the same problem. I created a new file on the ext_sd and changed the backup folder location in preferences and it magically worked. It wouldn't work on the internal sd for some reason

Thanks, guys, tried both of those already: no dice.
Are you going from ICS back to gingerbread? if so it won't work as ICS will "optimize" all of your apps.

Maybe the backup is too old? Dont know if that's possible. Also, check to see if the app has superuser permissions

Strange, I have never had a ROM flash wipe my internal sd card. That's where my TiB backups are stored. The only time it got wiped was from the s-off procedure and a radio update.

Personally, even though I paid for Titanium BU Pro a few years ago I don't even bother installing it anymore.
All I use now is AppMonster Pro & I never get the errors/FC's etc. that TBU users experience on a regular basis......

Well it doesn't really wipe the whole SD card, but clears key folders. I store my backups on my external card and then also back them up to my computer. Just in case...
I had the same issue at first. Moved my backups from internal to external sd. Used dropbox to upload and sync to a folder on my account. When flashing a new ROM I just download TiBu, open it up, make sure the directory is right and then open the menu, hit the reload titanium option and after that hit the menu again and hit the refresh apps button. Works for me every time.

didn't think either of these restored app data though. That is why people use titanium.
I know I had problems with it earlier this year, but it seems to get updated every week here lately and no problems at all. I switched my backup folder to the sd card and it restores apps and data no problem.
I just flashed Venesaur, and I haven't had an issue with TiBu.
In fact, I don't think I've ever had an issue with it. Except when I didn't know how to do something.

Swype version

I made a huge mistake trying to update to a new version of swype to see if it would respond better instead I got a version that it not compatible with my phone it is very small not even half the screen. Can somebody post the apk please the one that came with the evo 4g lte. Thanx
Nevermind figured it ok. If anybody if updates swype you can go back in to apps and uninstall the updates. It will return it back to the orginal swype version.
How did u update it in the first place? Are U trying to get Swype beta on it?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I am very interested in how to load swype beta to replace the pre-installed version. Swype bets on my OG was awesome. No matter what I do, it always fails at the licensing step.
I have tried the various suggestions that deal with using root explorer to delete existing files, including files in davlik cache. When I install swype, however, it still seems to know about the previous install despite erasing all the swype related filed i could find and rebooting. During install it asks me if I want to replace the system app, to which I respond yes. But if I deleted the files and rebooted, hoe does it know? At the licensing step, it just hangs forever.
Has anyone figured out how to do this?

I did this the other day, very easy. Same way I did this on eVo 3d. I should have explained this.
Go in root explorer.
Go to system/app
Make sure it's r/w
delete Swype apk
Exit
Install Swype installer, sign in, download, and finish setup.
Restore just Swype data through titanium backup to get your personal dictionary back. Enjoy
edit: PS, if U every get force closes, uninstall in settings and reinstall through Swype installer.
Swyped from my eVo
Update: this time I got a message at the beginning of the installer that said Sorry Swype beta is unavailable for devices with swype preinstalled.
_________
Did all of that and more, including removing lib files and files from caches. Will give it another go.

Am getting ready to go through this process. I'm rooted with Zedomax's method but have not yet installed a custom recovery (kinda waiting for a few more options to come along, would love to see an Amon-Ra recovery or the like).
In any case, since I can't make a nandroid backup of my device first, I want to be careful about this install. To that end, if this Swype Beta install gets hosed, will I be able to easily return to the pre-installed Swype and if so how, is returning that deleted Swype.apk to the system directory and/or rerunning it sufficient? I'd hate to think I could screw things up to the point where I no longer have even the pre-installed version of Swype. ETA: I have Titanium Backup so possibly restoring from there if it gets hosed?
You also mention r/w for the /system directory, which I know how to enable through ES File Explorer. At what point can the /system directory be returned to r/o? Is it sufficient to do so at the end of the install and registration process or is there something else that needs to happen before re-enabling r/o for /system?

[Q] Stock apps/bloatware are reinstalling after phone restart.

Hello,
I have a stock rooted ROM from viper that has all of the bloatware an sprint apps on it. I've tried removing the apks from ES file browser, android terminal emulator, and titanium backup uninstall. They are removed from the app drawer but then reappear (and sometimes update) whenever I reboot the phone.
How do I prevent this and remove them permanently?
Also, on an unrelated note, I'm using the OMJ mod pack and hot reboot doesn't work. It reboots to lock screen and then turns off completely. Has anyone found a fix for that too?

This has to do with not being able to make system changes while S-ON after the JellyBean update.
Urgh, I can't post outside links yet. Google this article to read more:
"Bootloader in Jelly Bean update causes huge headaches for rooted, S-ON HTC EVO 4G LTE owners" at Pocketables
A few options:
You could install MeanBean which has a fix to allow S-ON users to make system changes so that your uninstalls will persist.
Or you could check out App Quarantine ROOT/FREEZE, which you can use to freeze apps. I used this before MeanBean had the system changes fix and I didn't have any problems with the changes reverting. Titanium Backup has the option too, but the freeze option is only in the pay version.
Another option that I do personally due to this issue is remove all associated apk and odex files in the zip of the app you don't want in the Rom before transferring it to your sdcard and flashing... Takes a few minutes but ensures the app isn't installed upon bootup...just another option in case its a Rom that doesn't have meanrom's s-on workaround....

This worked perfectly! I deleted the apks while it was still zipped in Winrar and reflashed.
Best option: just get s-off.
Yes it may sound scary, but you will never want to go back to s-on again.
No more flashing kernels before a new Rom, none of that.
Just go to the dirty racun thread and go from there.
