[Q] L2TP/IPSec with PSK VPN causes phone to freeze/reboot? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Galaxy S2 and my phone hangs up and/or reboots after a while when using L2TP IpSec with PSK VPN.
Notes:
- PPTP works fine
- This happens everytime I turn L2TP on, sometimes after 10-15 seconds, sometimes after a few minutes
- It seems to freeze/reboot faster when I'm on 3G compared to Wifi
I tried to no avail:
- Lightnin' Rom with several kernels (galaga, ninphetamine and stock)
- the latest stable CM7.1
I found another post on androidforums.com titled "Support when L2TP/ipsec crt is in use samsung galaxy s 2 will crash"
(cannot post the link since I'm not allowed to...)
I hope this issue will get more traction on xda since I am in China and having my VPN working smoothly is pretty important to me...
Is anyone experiencing the same issue?

This happens to my phone as well
Cognition S2 1.5.1

I finally solved the problem by flashing a stock ROM with Odin.
I flashed ZSKI3 from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Afterwards, L2TP started working fine over 3G/Wi-Fi, and moreover, I can now connect using PPTP over 3G (it was not working before but I was assuming my network provider was blocking it since I am in China).
I then went again through the rooting process and I am using LeoMar75 ROM without any issue with my VPN .
(For info: initially, I had tried to install stock kernel through CWM recovery, I had also tried CM7.1 after wipe cashe/data and also formatting system, but those did not solve the problem)

Also: flashing the stock ROM through Odin is a non-wipe install, so I did not have to reinstall anything.

Done this too.
My phone reboots after trying to connect to PPTP VPN.
Im on Lightning rom.
Any fix?

On my SGS II & T-Mobile SIM VPN freeze only in 2/3G connection after 10-30 seconds when traffic connections are established. There is 5 second gap between freeze and reboot, when phone doesnt respond to network traffic. So it looks like some type of watchdog ? Its 2.3.3 Android.

I solve this issue with MIUI ROM...

Over here instead usin the basic in os vpn or 1vpn it connects fine but no traffic on apps at all,i know those servers do work, wonder what may conflict considering that as i said theres no traffic but it is indeed connected to whatever server i tried.

My phone freezes everytime I connect to VPN using L2TP! There must be a fix...

I'm currently On CheckRom HD v4 and siyahkernel v2.6.5 and having this problem, everytime I successfully connected via L2TP connection after few seconds or few minutes phone will reboot automatically or freeze and I have to reboot it manually, I used Cognition Rom, even Stock rom and stock kernel but nothing changes, Anyone know a little fix for this?

Hello
I have same problem with my SII and the Lightnin' Rom
When the vpn is etablish the phone reboot, but only in 3G, i have no problem for use same connection VPN in wifi mode

I have the SGH-I727 with stock Rogers ROM and this problem presents itself as well. IKE authentication succeeds, L2TP authentication succeeds and I log about a half-dozen connections on the firewall (email update, looking for market, etc) and then raccoon crashes (per alogcat). The firewall is Strongswan 4.5.2 with xl2tpd . WIFI/APN makes no difference. Any IKEv2 clients for Android out there?

Does an unlocked version of the Galaxy S2 with no custom ROMs also suffer from connectivity issues when it comes to L2TP VPN?
I don't know if this helps, but most of the times, I'll be having a VPN connection over Wi-Fi and not over 3G.

[Q] CM6.1.3 V4.5.7, 802.1x Wi-Fi error

I can't seem to connect to Wi-Fi with a 802.1x security but the all the other securities work fine.
In the stock S.E firmware, it all works normally (2.1-update1 baseband 54)
Is anyone else having this problem?
Edit: My university uses PEAP/MSCHAPV2

Wi-fi Ace from Market can help you with this
Follow this --> http://myxperiax10.blogspot.com/2010/09/wifi-enterprise-connection.html
Wifi ACE doesn't help me. Possibly because the network does not broadcast the SSID - it has to be manually typed in.
I've had trouble connecting to it for a long time - If I remember correctly, 2.1 global would connect, but since I've upgraded no luck.
EDIT:
update - I figured out how to do it. Go to standard Wifi settings add the Enterprise's SSID -> as "Open" security (if you try secured, it will fail and then won't save). Now go to Wifi ACE as described above and elseware and tinker with settings... poof, it works - well you have to exit ACE...

What kind of security is your wifi modem is having? is it wps smthng lk that? Did you tried with different wifi hotspots?
it doesnt have any security, i disable it
The thing is that it doesn even recognize that there is a wifi signal, it just turn off automatically before without detecting any wifi signal, i tried at work and the same thing happened
(sorry if i misspelled a lot of words jejeje)
try to flash another ROM and see if it works...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA premium app
i restored the backup i made with cwm and everything works fine now (touch x-power rom), and if i reinstall check rom the wifi goes out again, it seems it deletes something that leaves me with no wifi mac adress (i searched in about the phone, turning on and of wifi and every time it said not available)
Bizarre...
im getting the same thing, did anyone find a solution?
had this same exact issue.. it is a hardware problem.. so changing rom, kernel or fw wont help you at all... only solution is going to samsung service center.. my problem was solved in 3 days..so many s2 users have this problem..
take a look at these threads...

There are a lot of problems with KK5 and wifi. If you update Busybox it borks it completely. I can't connect to my 5Ghz home wifi but the 2.4 Ghz works fine. I also can't connect to some wifi that uses WEP. All works fine with previous builds. I have seen threads that suggest replacing the wpa_suplicant file from Android 2.3.5 fixes the problem.

[Q] Wifi does not work after upgrading to ICS

Upgraded Galaxy S2 to latest ICS update available in India.
But after that Wifi is not working properly. WAP2 authentication is not happening properly.
Wifi analyzer shows good signal strength.
No notification for wifi shown in top bar. But in notification dropdown wifi is full green.
tried battery remove, wifi sleep policy change, password change and *# code to reset driver.
Any other help?
thanks
rohan
Are you sure the password you entered is correct? Because this problem shouldn't occur if you're on the official firmware and kernel. This MAY happen if you're rooted and have a custom ROM installed which is in a BETA state. This is normally a problem related to the kernel itself. You should probably try restoring your phone if the WIFI doesn't work at all. Or maybe you can restart the phone again and there might be a fix.
doing a factory reset also might help... it helped me in my case.
which from you upgrading ,via KIES or ODIN.try to download firmware then flash via ODIN.i m had the same case first time come to ICS.
sorry for my bad english
Some solution
I updated using Kies.
BTW, I have some work around, for anyone interested.
On wifi router disable WEP encryption (not WPA), in that case S2 can connect to wifi properly.
But when WEP encryption AES or any other is enabled, it cannot connect to wifi.

[Q] Can't connect to wifi

I can't connect to wifi ,it says authentication error occurred ,when I change back to stock rom, it show me saved and secured
sorry to bump such an old thread, but i can't seem to find a fix on this authentication error.. it just appeared all of a sudden, i have not done anything special with the router nor on my S3, my other devices can connect with wifi smoothly.
well, to start with, i was able to connect before.
any suggestions on how to fix this? i just might send this to the service center -.-
things i have tried:
-restart the router
-entered router details manually on my s3
-flashed another custom rom
-flashed another modem, kernel
-flashed a stock firmware
-reset the router
i have searched high and low in google and still no solution

[Q] Wifi Connection Issues, cm10.1 CWM

I have looked around for a couple of hours and cannot find any answer to this.
I have just got my S3 back from being repaired after Sudden Death, and have rooted using Odin and CWM Touch 6.0.2.8, and flashed the latest cm10.1 Nightly (Currently 17022013)
I am able to connect to the mobile network (3 UK) and get a good H+ connection.
I cleared all of my saved wifi networks, and try to connect to my home connection. It Accepts the WPA key, and gets to 'Obtaining IP Address...' and does not go any further.
I have tried now on several wireless networks including insecure ones, and it will not connect.
Please help if you've had anything similar, or if I need to provide more information, a log of some kind
I have installed the latest nightly from CM10.1 and the issue is still present. Which makes me think that it is not a CM issue.
I will be re-flashing the stock image of the phone to confirm this shortly. Will post results

this worked for me but i found it easiser to swap the folder before instaling rom
