[Q] Info on Tmo GS2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone tell me what the TMO GS2 will be referred to as in cyanogen lingo? Also will the existing CM7 ROMS for the GS2 work on the TMO version?
I realize that the product hasn't shipped quite yet but just wondered what was going to be involved to get CM7 ported to TMO's version? I assume not much but then again TMO is using a different processor than the rest. Not looking for a hard answer here, just an educated guess as to what was involved based on similar situations.

Nothing for sgs2 international version will work on the tmob version.

Thanks. Would you guess that the tmo port would be pretty straightforward?

Unlike the at&t sgs2 which is almost identical to the int sgs2 porting to the tmob sgs2 is like porting to a whole new phone, so not really straightforward.
As noted the 1.5ghz chip in the tmob sgs2 is not any faster than the int version, so i would lean towards importing an int version, as long as it can run on tmobs 3g bands.

Looks like it will be called the SGH T989

Att SGS II forum?

When the SGS II is release on ATT next weekend(10/2) will there be a new section(general, themes apps, dev, etc) for it? Or will it go in this forum along with the international SGS II? I believe the ATT SGS II model number is SGH-i777
Anyone? 10 char
Ive been wondering about this too
I would imagine there will be different found as roms from the international version shouldn't work fully on the at&t version without modifications.

+1 for AT&T version.
The S2 forum here is already quite confusing.
Although I do remember reading somewhere for a thread to be started it was like 1k members had to show interest or something like that...

Agreed. I'm guessing it will be much like the I9000 forums and I897(Captivate, etc) where some some things will work but will need to be tweaked a bit to work on the carrier version of phone(ATT).

[Q] porting

Just a quick question would it be possible to port roms from the international note to our atat note?
Possible? Maybe. Likely? No.

The hardware is completely different. We would have a better chance porting from the skyrocket and/or tmobile SGS2.

Been working on that but the resolution is all jacked up.
From what I am finding it is actually easier to kang bits and pieces from either.
A conversion is not likely in either case

Or maybe a hellraiser script from skyrocket roms?
Would it not be the same as porting a i9100 rom over to i777

Absolutely not, the att s2 has the exynos as does the international while the international note has an exynos and we have a snapdragon. Skyrocket to note is probably best but I have been unable to get thingsworking in any way whatsoever (mainly from lack of knowledge, BC it's def doable).
Ok makes sence thinks ill try and work on something
The issue is the difference in resolution....its slmost more worthwhile to start from scratch

[Q] Main reason for custom roms or the lack there of.

I'm sorry but this question has been bothering me for sometime. I have googled this question but have had no luck. What is the main reason there aren't a lot of custom roms like the international one has? I know our device is newer so I'm just simply asking. This isn't a complaint, ETA or a rant, its simply a question. I know when the atrix came out there were some pseudo roms out until the bootloader became unlocked and then the floodgates opened. Will most of the international roms make it over to this phone eventually. I'm sorry in advanced if this question has been asked before but I really tried to find it first.
the international phone uses a different chipset than this one so no none of the roms will work. the reason we dont have so many roms is because we dont have as many devs as everyone else does (my opinion) but this phone isnt that greatly wanted because of its size so we may never have a lot of roms. the ones we do have are great we just need more themes to go with them. you can port a rom from the skyrocket or t-mobile gs2 if you would like to. im currently running t-mobile ics rom now
Im hoping that theres lot of roms to come but what do i know. The phone is great, not sure why its not popular, yea its big but still sick.

I believe someone tried to flash a skyrocket rom to their note... didn't end well.
The moral of the story is: you can't.
Edit: unless you port it (something not so easy), as smartguy044 said.
You have to change a few files but it works. Im using tmobile rom with everything working great and a theme for the skyrocket

Uhhh, not wanted? The US version of the Galaxy Note has sold more than 5 million units since launch, 7 weeks ago.

How did you do it? Which ROM and what changes did you have to make? There's a considerable difference in displaybresolution, so I'm curious as to how you did it.

Eh. The main reason is because this phone is so new. It hasn't even been out for 2 months. Thats not long in the dev community. Hell, it took like 6 months just to unlock the bootloader on my atrix and even longer for ROMs. With ICS rolling out and the note gaining traction, you will see an abundance of dev help in the coming months

I agree that the Note is "wanted", which will eventually be great for future rom development. However, the figure is 5 million sold globally since the global version's release, not just the US market.

Better than I expected.
We just had a few new dev's join our team, announcement of upcoming cm9, ics release... i'd say we're in pretty good shape for some solid roms coming very soon.

[Q] Is there a way to use non at&the roms on the i747?

The title basically says it all. It looks like the SGS III models for other carriers are a little ahead of us as far as roms are concerned. My question: is there anyway to make sgs 3 roms from other carrier variants a possibility?
I'm thinking it might be as simple as just making sure the kernel and modem are stock at&t, but want to find out for sure before I try experimenting. Big thanks to anyone who can answer.

If you want to use a rom from the i9300 on your US variant then you are sh*t outta luck. Not gonna happen.
As far as using roms from other US variants on your at&t version then you would be better off asking in the forums for the US variants, not here.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
We have a completely different SoC.
So no, it is not that simple.
Don't even try it, I've seen some ask a try anyway.

Is this phone worth buying?

Sorry if this has already been posted or is in the wrong section i am new to the forums.
Okay i recently got into rooting and putting custom roms on my phone right now i have an HTC evo 4g.
But i am eligable for an upgrade with sprint i have been waiting for a while because i knew there would be an amazing phone to be released soon enough and i am starting to think the SIII.
Is this phone worth it? I would only be paying 250$ for the 32gb and 199$ for the 16gb with my upgrade.
is there any other phones that are up there with the galaxy s3 on sprints network? Or should i just go and get this phone.
is it alot faster then the s2? also will i be able to put jellybean on it if i was to get it? is there a stable release out.
Yes. Go get this phone.
Is the best currently available.

Buy the phone if you want it. It's a great phone but it may not suit your needs. Check it the specs and compare it with other phones you can choose from .
Your s3 model won't be the international version, it will be the dial core version so check their forum to see their development.

Yes
He meant dual core version. You aren't really losing much. Both versions are top of the end amazing phones.

The dual core GS3 has documented and developer-friendly Qualcomm = definitely worth buying.
S3 is easily the best phone I have ever owned (and I have owned a great many top-spec phones).
That said I preferred the S2 in terms of size and weight. But the S3 has a higher quality screen and considerably better battery life
Oooh i see now the I9300 is the quad core version which is not in the US
The US version is dual core.
Okay how big is the difference in speed between the two?

Should be similar on stock touchwiz. The dual core one is lightyears ahead of the Exynos one, though, when it comes to custom AOSP roms. Why? Well, just ask @codeworkz ^^

Thank you very much.
Just wanted to add my opinion to this one as I'm sick of all the exnos bashing.
Just because cm devs can't get it to work properly does not mean it's bad. It's the best version and I've never ever used a ti Omap or Qualcomm based phone that wasn't **** and dont get me started on cm roms on phones as from desire onwards I've never encountered a cm version worth installing as they aren't worth it. Stock android has always been and always will be lacking and ugly no matter how many cookie cutter mods you implement like volume button wake which is old old old.
Do yourself a favour and stick to Samsung based roms and save the headache and the laughs from people who see your stock android device and the pictures that come off the aosp camera among other things.
The SG III is way better value than the iphone 5.
If you want something "worth buying", you are the only one who can actually decide on this.. because it may/may not suit you. So i suggest you search and gather info for yourself so you get accurate infos
I do not mean to flame or anything, just a mini-suggestion. Hopefully this will help you in your decision
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I am surprised that no one said that you should wait for the Note 2 or the new Nexus or the next Galaxy S x, where x>3. There will always be better, but when you actually start using the phone you see that you don't need anything more, except less call log lag
It is that great that I don't even have the urge to root it right now and I rooted and reflashed everything android I had before.
