SD card causing issues... I think... - Motorola Photon 4G

Since day one I have had an SD card in my phone and it has been having issues with WIFI causing the cell radio to lock up. I also noticed the "lag" on the phone when swiping through the home screens and especially when open and closing emails.... So I removed the SD card because I had copied over some very large videos from it that I took and forgot to put the card back in. So far today my phone opens and closes email super fast and the browser is crusing along faster, and even simply swiping through my home screens is WAY faster and snappier.
So is there a direct issue with the SD card? it is a no name HC Class 6 8Gb card that was formatted in my photon twice now. I snagged it off of ebay about a year ago.
Also in the battery use panel all kinds of stuff is showing up that has never shown up in there before. com.motorola.com, motorola services, motorola.contacts, com.android.phone and a few others but I have never seen any of these in the battery usage until today. Is this all due to the SD card??? major confusion here on how it could effect the phone so much.

try factory reset.

I can tell you for a fact, not all SD cards are alike! Stick with SanDisk! I have a 32Gb Class 2, I got a 32Gb No Name Class 6. My SanDisk blew it out the water as far as performance. I (we at the job) kept that no name disk for a mear 3 hours or so before packing it back up and sending it back.

Definitely stick with SanDisk/Kingston. I've heard of problems you are having before back when I had the CDMA HTC Hero.

Done this already about 5 times since owning the phone, via both the Android settings and Android recovery. Did that due to a huge issue I am having with the phone already, but am wondering if the SD card may be the cause.

As for speed I can see that, but how would an SD card actually slow a phone down when nothing is even using the card. My phone is like a totally different phone today. When I get home I'll throw it back in there and see what happens. My back button has always been really laggy, but now it is instant.
Very odd.

Get your hands on aLogCat, as I'm curious to see if there's anything there that would indicate root cause.
I also wonder/speculate whether you have something else running in the background that is constantly scanning your SD card, such as a media player looking for files to index.

I need to do the logcat anyway for the other major issue I am having with the cell radio. I have a video of it screwing up but need to edit out some personal stuff first.
But as for apps the only thing loaded is the google music player from the market. I'm not a big music buff and have no need for all the fancy players out there.

Sprint beta 3.16.651.0 microSD problems?

I've been running the leaked 3.16.651.0 ROM on my Sprint Mogul for a little less than month now. A problem I've seen (only twice) is that the microSD card just 'disappears'. Both native file explorer and Resco file explorer say it isn't there when I try to navigate to it. Problem is resolved with a soft reset.
I don't run programs from the card so I wouldn't notice it is missing unless I'm specifically working with files on it, which isn't too often. The fact that I've seen this twice (out of maybe 20 times working with the card) just had me wondering if anyone else has seen this. I'm using the 8GB Sandisk SDHC card. Since I just got the phone, and updated to the ROM about the same time I got the card, I have no experience with the card running on stock ROM
I've never had that problem (leaked or official ROM), but I seem to remember my old 6700 had issues like that when I installed voicecommand.
you should do a search cause alot of people with dcd rom based on the new rom had the same issue i think you have to not use encryption or something

correct me if im rong, i thought the mogul supported up to 8gb so why would you need the patch
Originally, it wasn't supposed to. It would only support up to 2GB. Coincidentally, it works, but will have it's days that it won't. This is to ensure that it works constantly.
I am running M$ Voice Command (1.60.4622.0) and did see this on rare occasion on my old 6700 too, but didn't investigate back then. I have not turned on encryption. There hasn't been a problem recognizing the 8GB capacity, just with it completely disappearing. It isn't a large problem, but even one disappearance seems odd.
I'll try collecting some baseline stats on how often it is disappearing by going to it regularly, and then try suggestions to see if things change for the better.
Any suggestions on places I should look beyond using file browsers (stock, Resco) and start>settings>device information>memory>storage card to see if the card is being recognized? I'll also try card re-insert vs. soft boot when it is gone to see if that brings it back. Thanks for the suggestions

i seen ppl say it works fine with 4 gb idk about 8 gb
Ran fine yesterday, saw problem today (last soft reset 1d2h ago). Additional details on symptoms on this particular failure: File browser: sees top level folders on storage card. In some of these lower level folders and files appear, in some not. Nothing consistent with respect to levels down where things start disappearing but I couldn't get to any folders or files more than two levels down. start>settings>system>memory>storage card shows capacity of card as 7782.5MB (correct), same amount as in use (incorrect), and 0 free. Popping the card out and in resolved the problem. Next time it fails I'll see what Pocket Mechanic can see with respect to the card when it goes out.
I did a search on 'storage card disappears'. Seems this is a problem folks experience across phones and WM5/WM6 PPCs. May even be the card. Didn't come across any explanations of the problem or fixes (some registry hacks related to thinking it is a new or old card, that were later discounted in the thread, but even if true, the new/old card isn't the problem as I'd still expect to see files if it were a new card). e.g., http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1138270. From what I found searching, its something I live with for now. I'm pretty sure it isn't anything specific to 3.16.651.0 ...

[Q] Weird SD card behavior

I have an 8GB SD card in my Photon that used to show up just fine, but now the contents are no longer accessible. Under file manager, it says no SD card is present. But I also use App2SD and all the apps (games mostly) that I had moved over to it are still working. I can launch those games just fine and even in the App2SD app, it shows my SD card (total space and used space) along with all the apps on it.
When I take this same SD card out and plug it into my Win7 PC, all the old contents are still there (pictures, music, videos). I can view/listen to them just fine, so the SD card is good.
So I'm not sure wtf is going on. The only thing that I did that may have caused this was installing QuickPic. When I first launched it, it tried to do an index of all my content on the SD card. But now when I launch it, it says no SD card is present. I've rebooted several times, powered off/on, reseated the SD card, but the end result is the same.
Anyone have a clue on what I should do (short of formatting starting over)?
In file manager are you browsing to /mnt/sdcard-ext ?
I was able to browse there under QQPlayer, but it was empty. For File manager, I simply select SD Card (choices are Internal Phone Storage, SD card, Shard folders) and it says "Please insert memory card". But for further testing, I installed Zedge and moved it over to the SD card with App2SD. It still allowed me to do that and the app still worked.

Keep guessing, it's a Sandisk. And like I said in the OP, it works fine in the PC and in the Photon, as far as App2SD is concerned, just not with the rest of the phone.

And you think it's a bad card exactly how? Are you reading my posts or just randomly responding with crap? If the best of your troubleshooting skills is to replace the suspect part, then point taken. However, I disagree.
So for other folks on the forum that have some basic troubleshooting skills, here's something else I've done to test. I've placed the SD card back into my old HTC Eris and the card works fine in there as well. So my guess is that the issue is somewhere in my Photon. Just not sure if it's the hardware or software.
Then live with a bad card
I have had issues with my sdcard, but not to the extent you seem to have. I swapped the Radioshack Photon for a Best Buy Photon last night to get a hunski back and backed all my apps up with astro. The only thing my new Photon recognizes are the pictures I had from the old Photon. My wallpapers, ringtones, apps, etc... are not seen by new one and Astro does not find any backed up apps. AND its a new 8gb ScanDisk. Weird.
Finally did a factory reset on my phone but still kept getting the same behavior. Called up Sprint, got a support ticket number and walked into a Sprint store for them to test it further. 2 other known good SD cards were failing to mount on my phone. Tried them on another new Photon and they worked, including mine. Luckily, I was within the 30 days period and was able to simply get my phone swapped out. POS Motorola...

Reboot issue with Apps installed on SD Card?

I posted this issue on Android Central as well, but not as much chatter over there. Here is my issue:
I had this problem with my Samsung GSII as well and thought it may just be a fluke, but now I am having the same issue with my new Note.
Due to lack of free application storage, I move (VIA the App manager) most of my larger games on to the Micro SD card. Which looks like it works fine, however, after a while, not so much.
The Note (and all Samsungs) go through the scans when you boot up the phone on the internal storage and the memory card... Upon completion of this scan, the phone just keeps resetting. Once I pull the memory card out, I am good to go, but all my games were on the memory card.
I am using a PNY Class 10 card and am thinking maybe it is corrupt? Or maybe I am really not supposed to load everything on to the card like that?
Thoughts? Anyone else run in to this?
Thanks!
you do realize that most apps including large games take less than 50mb of space. and we have a 2GB storage partition you can store hundreds of apps with no problem. TBH i wouldnt bother with moving them until you do actually run out of app space.
As much as I hate to admit my app problem... I have long ago surpassed the 2G app storage..
After years of purchasing apps and many very good free apps of the day from Amazon, 2GB no longer cuts it for me.
Thanks.
wow really well the issue is that the phone itself uses the internal memory as the default storage location. There are some hacks but i wouldn't recommend using them on this phone as they are untested. Do you honestly use all those applications? I have tons of apps that I really dont use anymore that were from the donut days of android.
Your response sounds like some of the responses I get from our developers... "Well, tell them not to use it and it wont break!".
I say that in good fun. No, I dont use them all, but whenever I get a new device, I like to load it up with my stuff to test it out.
I could definitely remove or just not install about half of them, but again, that doesnt fix the problem. It simply avoids the problem.
Thanks again for your response.

I have the same problem & no solution. I ended up restoring the Note on day 3 of ownership due to the constant resetting. Is there a way to make the internal 16GB the default install location?

Honestly, I have about 8 gigs of apps installed, all moved to external SD card - a 64GB Sandisk Class 6. No reboots and no issues at all. Always move everything I can to external SD. Not sure why, just some mental preference in me likes to keep the phone itself as free as possible. Never had a restart or a crash because of it. Always used App2SD Pro app or Force to SD if rooted andnits been flawless - same experience on the SGS2 as well. Sounds like a corrupt card to me, honestly. Were you using he same card when you had issues in your previous Samsung devices?

SD Card music & photos disappear.

Could be my card but only after I performed my 1st reset, this Houdini act started.
The content is still on the card but the Music & Gallery application will randomly decide you don't have any. Of course I panicked at 1st, even with a backup on the PC but looking in Astro file manager, it was all still there.
A little annoying.
Edit:
WTF, only Astro sees the content. Google Music didn't either.

I have a somewhat similar problem in that the phone reads the card but not the music.
Mine was after a restart as well (though it wasn't by choice, I was out Saturday night and pulled my phone out to see that it had reset and recovered from an error and wanted to send a report to HTC).
I assume you haven't made any headway on yours without a post, I tried removing and reseating the SD card but it didn't help. It reads the space correctly and everything, but nothing will read the MP3s on there.
Kind of annoying, really liked rocking out with the Beats on this phone.
U guys using the HTC app and what not? My phone has yet to have pics or music disappear.... Have you taken everything off your sd card did a scan for bad sectors on it and then did a full format on windows then on the phone...
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
It does come back eventually but it could be either bad sectors, the way the OS scans the new SD location or the card speed is slow. Like right now, everything is working fine. I might clean the card & keep the mp3s & pics on the root of the card.
I was going to get an 64GB sxdc card before the month is out.

Try this app out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascanner&hl=en
It'll force the OS to rescan the memory for media files.
If all else fails, try this. I had to do this when running into a similar issue.
Are you guys using quality sd cards or knock-off! I ran into similar problems with cheap eBay knock-offs.
I buy genuine SanDisk now and never have sd trouble anymore!

The card in my case is a 32GB SanDisk (no class listed) from Verizon.
Tried both & still getting a headache over it. Pissed that Astro has no problem seeing it but Gallery & Music play peek-a-boo with my content.
I seem to be the only one having this issue so I guess it's the speed of the card maybe? I hope anyway.
For now I moved my Photos & Music to the phone's 9GB.
I am having a similar issue. I've had my EVO LTE for 7 days and bought a new 32GB microsd card for it as well. After almost every restart or power off my sd card will unmount and I have to go into settings to remount it.
This also sometimes happens after the phone has been sitting for several hours, such as when I woke this morning (this is rare).
In my case it is either mounted and all date intact or NOT mounted and therefore inaccessible. The same card works fine in my EVO 3D so i'm thinking this is a bug in the ROM or perhaps the port for the card.
I'm LOVING this phone... getting great battery life, can't keep it out of my hands but there are a few annoying minor bugs so far but I do not regret purchase at all.
I have hardware version 003 and also suffer from the WiFi sleep bug even though I have it set to never sleep and have dedicated it to a single frequency (it sleeps whether on 2.4 or 5GHZ dedicated).
Beginning to wonder if this ROM has some issues managing services after prolonged idle times.
Via Settings>Storage
I formatted my card through HTC's Storage options in settings (done by 1. UnMount & 2. Earse Storage Card) & moved my music & photos from Phone Storage to Storage card.
I noticed Android will auto create folders so hopefully this act means things will work as intended.
So far so good.
I used this option exclusively to move the files rather than moving them by other means.
So far so good. Expecting the worst every 15 minutes, lying with the claim that I have nothing.
I had an issue with Google music not seeing mp3s on my sd card. Going to settings and erasing the cache/data fixed it.

This worked great!. thanks for the help
Still doesn't work for me :'( I guess no music for me
Happened to me with my music and some photos after a reset or fresh flash..I noticed that for.some reason the files moved to internal storage ..I just copied and pasted the whole file where the music and photos were located to where the they were on my sd card..and it worked..I'm not used to having internal storage..taking a little while to get used to
Sd Card
I had this happen yesterday. Music and gallery disappeared. I am using the 8 gig card from my ogevo4g. I believe the problem is the card slot. If you push the card all the way down into the slot the intermittent disappearing of gallery and music happens. I pulled the card and put it back in but not pushing it all the way to the bottom of the slot and no more issues.
I love the phone but I'm not sure the htc build quality is there on this one like it was with the original evo?

"SD Card Unexpectedly Removed" hardware issue solved

Hey all,
I thought I would share my findings to help others with the same issue.
Two days ago I kept catching glimpses of a card image in the notifications at the top of the screen, but it would only be for a second so I could not see what it was trying to tell me. But had a quick look and sd card seemed fine and all data was present on handset. A couple of hours later it popped up with "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed". I tried ejecting and reinserting, restarting device and turning off and removing battery all to no avail. So I did a quick search which showed this seemed to be quite a common issue, after reading many threads with people saying the sd card is corrupt or network providers saying it was software and to do a restore. I decided before all that hassle I would open the phone and check the circuitboard expecting it to be a dry solder joint. One thing I will point out that was different to some other users is the fact my sd card was not visible with the phone connected to the computer, so this may not solve all related issues.
THE FIX
Turn off phone, remove the battery, SIM card and sd card. Remove all screws except the one by the 3.5mm jack. Gently pull the white plastic trim that surrounds the card holders and battery but the top part with speaker and camera does not need removing. Once removed if you look to the left of the sd card holder you will see the ribbon that connects the sd card to the main circuit board and at the end of the ribbon is the connector. Mine was disconnected and was loose, even if yours is not loose it would be worth gently pulling it off and reconnecting it. Then reassemble in the reverse order.
This was a nice surprise in the sense it was a very simple fix. However when I mounted the sd card even directly in my pc it was not found, I assume that the loose connector floating about had probably shorted its connections and caused an issue with the sd card. After a handfuls of attempts at mounting it in my pc it was finally detected and I backed up all the data and reformatted the sd card, then copied the data back, mounted it in my phone and was happy to find it all working as expected.
I hope this information will help some of you out, as it was a simple fix to a simple issue and results from searching had no solutions, just lots of assumptions.
And what can I do
Hi
I read your articles and seem very good but u have a question.
I had the same issue and I saw that every time my phone said I hat message it creates in my sd card a folder named lost. I and then i saw that one part of my battery was going there, ti reconnect the phone with my sd card
I formatted my sd card and did all the things that I found in the Internetbut nnothing works and I just change my sd for another one I had and sincethere u ddon't have any other issue, but my computer detects very good my first sd card and I'm not sure how to fix it.
Any idea?
Regards
Recently ive just faced this issue, what I did is to insert my 32gb sd card in my PC and run CHKDISK, havent got any error while performing this, thereafter i inserted it in my phone & goodness till now this sd card error hasn't appear yet. (finger crossed).
Mine did something like this a few times and then the 32GB Sandisk class 10 card died. Couldn't get it to work in any device except Linux based Media player. Luckily managed to copy my nadroid backup and TB backup. Sent to Sandisk and they replaced it. There is already a thread about S3 damaging teh SD cards. May be the loose connection is what's causing the card to to end up dead.

Yeah,as mentioned I have seen a lot of issues about sd cards, this is the first issue I have had and thought it would be worth mentioning. There is little space when the case is together so it could easily still make contact and seem fine even if the connector has worked loose and cause all kinds of issues. As mentioned mine had the sd icon popping up every now and then before it actually failed. Some users seem to be going through a lot of sd cards with them failing on a regular bassis.
I've been using my 32gb card since my last phone which was the LG Optimus 3D it is a scandisk class 10 one. Anyway i took it out of the 3D and stuck it into my S3 i still have not had a problem. I did take it out a few times to put a rom in because i wiped my phone and didn't have a rom in the Sd card. Also i dropped my phone and replaced the whole front silver bumper bit the whole digitizer because i dropped my phone while playing basketball. It still works. It has been a year now it has been in two phones and still works great. I must be lucky..
I got mugged for the SD though i bought it last year for £60 from Argos a store in the UK. Now you can get them for half the price oh well.. I am waiting for the 128gb ones to come out so going to buy one lol..
today also my Sandisk Ultra HC I 32GB it's died, tomorrow I'll test with pc but no sign of life :crying: WTF samsung !!!
hey i have the same issue with an 32gb sd card, it was workking great and then i was getting the error about
"SD Card Unexpectedly Removed" and then i tried everything i could and my computer detect the sd card and it seems to be working normal but in my phone i have the error over and over again and it was draining my battery too, and the only thing i did was change to another 16gb sd card and this one is working.
maybe there is a problem with the 32gb sd cards
I have a 16GB Sandisk UHS-1 card and i have been getting this issue as well, and its becoming more and more frequent. Whenver it happens, the ringtones/notifications for certain apps like Gmail and Message get reset as the ringtones i set were stored in the sdcard. Also the photo frame app i have on my homescreen often resets to nothing as the pictures were also stored in the sdcard. Its really annoying because I can leave my phone sleeping, only to wake it up realizing my ringtones are all set to silent and my photo frame has been reset. At least i know its a common problem. damn you samsung!
Has anyone actually tried checking the connection on the ribbon as suggested? Mine has been fine since and works fine.

There is no way anyone would know you have opened it, the screws are all Philips instead of t6. As long as you use the correct screwdriver it won't damage the heads and will leave no sign of entery and it takes around 10 mins to complete. Or you could take it to Samsung to do but seems a lot of hassle for such a simple fix.
Also most people are rooted without concern of the warranty.
So there's no seals or stickers that are broken?

Nope, no sticker or seals and just so you know all screws to remove the back are identical, there are only two screws inside which are different but do not need removing for this. You only need a Philips screwdriver ( I used a ph00 x 40) as long as the screwdriver fits the screw well it will not damage the head. Once screws are out a flat head screwdriver or similar are helpfull to prise the back off.
Hi Guys,
A little feedback from my experience with this.
I too was experiencing the "Unexpectedly Removed" error on my 32GB Class10 Sandisk.
It was playing havok with my setup because I use a 8GB Ext4 Partition on the card, where I move 90% of my apps. (About 6GB of that is used by games + their "external" data), and it keeps my phone and FAT32 partition free for important stuff. (I use Link2SD and DirectoryBind)
The problem is, after the device wakes, Link2SD can't find any of the apps, so I can't start any of them, and I have to do a full reboot to get them back. :/
So, after searching and searching, I couldnt find a valid solution.
I tried with a 16GB class10 Samsung, and a 32GB Class10 Samsung card. Exact same setup. NO ISSUES.
Everything works perfectly.
Then I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933743&page=2
Where most of them are experiencing this error with Sandisk cards.
Apparently, it's a known issue with Sandisk Cards (especially the 32GB models), and cards sold after December 2012 no longer experience this.
I have contacted Amazon.co.uk about replacing the card as it's only 2 months old, still waiting for their answer. Will update if anyones interested.
cheers

I tried with a 16GB class10 Samsung, and a 32GB Class10 Samsung card. Exact same setup. NO ISSUES.
Everything works perfectly.
Apparently, it's a known issue with Sandisk Cards (especially the 32GB models), and cards sold after December 2012 no longer experience this.

A curious question if I may.
Was this a SanDisk Ultra (UHS) card? Most (if not all) Android phones do not have a proper UHS-I driver today and, although the card is supposed to switch down automatically, that transition time can fool the OS sometimes.

I read something about UHS compatibility, so I got an SD-HC

Is it the same thing?
Hmmm. Ok, might be getting somewhere.
Any idea if these cards have an internal "power saving" system that maybe kicks in if voltage drops below a certain level?

Yes, the red and Grey SanDisk cards are UHS.
Yes, they definitely have controllers and the host device can command them (if it knows how). I know that they allow In System Programming (ISP) for updating firmware. They support auto-standby, power-off and sleep modes but am not certain if the card would switch without command. Check the SD link in my signature if you really need more info.

I tested my SanDisk 64GB Ultra card in a Note 2 and it had the same symptoms (Mine were worse, with the card locking up while playing music after a few minutes, causing mmc timeout errors in the kernel).
I switched to a Samsung 64GB Pro card and since then I haven't had any issue. It's also twice as fast.
The amount of headaches this SanDisk card gave me is insane, probably the last time I buy a card from them.
i have sandisk ultra class 10 32gb. try this setup. use minitool to reformat your card then set it the cluster size to 16kb.
for me so far so good. will test this in a couple of days.
