[Q]Noob 2.2 to 2.3.X - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm current on Project-V, rooted, with "ClockWorldMod Recovery V2.5.1.3 - Voodoo Lagfix (ALL IN RED)"
I want to upgrade to:
[ROM][AOSP][2.3.5] NoFrills-AOSP
OR
[ROM] CyanogenMod 7 for the Samsung Vibrant :: V7.1.0.1
until today I Just put the new ROM (2.2) on my sd card and make:
wipe cache partition
wipe data \ factory reset
wipe dalvik cache
AND install zip from sdcard
Now I read that there is the BL issues which different between 2.2 & 2.3.
Can some direct me for what is the right steps for upgrade...
Thanks A lot.

Cm 7 works fine with froyo bl so you did Not have to worry about that

All Samsung Roms run on top of BML/RFS, CyanogenMod 7 does NOT.
It runs on MTD/yaffs2 (like Nexus One) which means you'll not able to flash just any kernel or run just any other filesystem you want. Use it as it is if possible, otherwise confirm with the kernel developer that you are trying to install whether it would work with CM. We do not support other kernels and know nothing about their capabilities or compatibility. Only the data partition, which is on movinand, is ext4 like on speedmod or voodoo ("lagfix"). No "lagfix" is necessary because this does not use any Samsung proprietary file systems.
First time flashing CM 7 to your Vibrant (or coming from another ROM)?
Easy way:
Start with a rooted Eclair/Froyo running Eclair/Froyo Bootloaders (do not ask us how to do this).
Install ROMManager Premium.
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Pick Vibrant (MTD) (ignore the warning about not having an official, pick ClockworkMod 2.x).
Make sure you can reboot into ClockworkMod recovery from ROMManager. Reboot and get back into ROMManager Premium.
Choose download ROMs.
Pick the CyanogenMod Nightlies.
Check the Google Apps addon.
Check Backup current ROM!
Check wipe data, cache, dalvik cache.
Let ROMManager finish the installation.

Hi.
Thank you both but i still didn't understand how to do this
1. I don't think i have ROM with 2.3 Bl
2. I don't know how to install one

[HOWTO] Install Mik's CM 7 Gingerbread port for Dummies

DUMMIES, FOLLOW THIS STEPS TO INSTAL MIK_OS GINGERBREAD CYANOGENMOD 7 PORT:
FIRST OF ALL GO HERE AND READ MIK's POST and thank Mik for his work!!!!!!!!!!!!
READ THE CHANGELOGS AND THE KNOWN BUGS!!!!!
Let's suppose you have Froyo on your device and want to go Gingerbread:
- you need: root, custom recovery, and rom zip from here
- boot into recovery, go to backup/restore and do a backup. For your own privet safety, you could use TitaniumBackup before booting into recovery to backup your files and settings.
- while in custom recovery, go to wipe and perform all wipes. WIPE DATA AND CACHE IF YOU ARE UPGRADING FROM FROYO! Go to adb shell and make a /system wipe (mount /system in recovery; adb shell rm -rf /system/*), or copy this file on sd, and flash it via cusom recovery to automatically wipe your /system data
- after the wipe, put your rom on the sd card - get the beta2 here , and flash it from custom recovery.
- wait until it boots up and set the phone up. If you're stuck on LG logo it means you didn't performe the wipes corectly, mainly the system wipe.
- you will have no google apps after the install, so go here and get them, or manually download them from market
- you now have Mik_os unofficial CyanogenMod 7 2.3.3 on you phone. Install TitaniumBackup and perform a restore if you used this metod to backup your data as i described in the second step.
Now, if you have an older version of Mik's CM7:
-boot into recovery and flash the newer version just like that. It will update the one you have on your device, and no data will be lost.
GO AGAIN TO THE OFFICIAL DEV THREAD AND RE-READ THE BUGS AND CHANGELOGS. AND AGAIN... THANK MIK FOR HIS WORK!!!!!
If you have questions about Mik's port, go to the correct thread and ask them! This is not a developer thread, it is just for info, or for those of you who are new to xda and cannot post in dev threads.
AND AGAIN, THANK MIK FOR HIS WORK, AND BUY HIM A LOLLYPOP VIA PAYPAL.
I have tried your steps but could not install this ROM. It got stuck on the boot animation. An it wasn't CM7 animation. Tried few times but without any luck. Now i am back to my old rom. atleast i did not brick my phone but i will sure give it a another try
You are probabily stuck at the lg logo. You should try to wipe the system manually, by adb or flashing the zip I linked in the original post, in the third step. I had the same problem, but this solves it.

I wasn't stuck on LG Logo. I had Megatron installed, it went through LG logo, then got stuck Megatron's Android Logo. Seems the rom was never installed properly and i have tried few times.
I have wiped everything, i have flashed from the zip you provided, and also i re-partitioned the sd card but it never worked
Did you got any errors when flashing cyanogen zip? From what you said, I think you shoul rewipe everything, part the sd 0 swap, ext 2 to ext3 and ext3 to ext 4. Make sure that you have the check for signed option in custom recovery.

I have done all of the above, may be the zip file got corrupted. Anyway, i will try again this weekend. thanks
How did you do the system wipe? You flashed the zip for wipeing or did you do it from adb shell?
I have another friend that flashed the /system wipe tool, and forgot to flash the actuall rom zip file, and had the exact simptomes as you described.

I used custom recovery, nandroid back up, then re-partition the sd card. then wiped the card, then usb toggle to copy 2 zips on to sd card. flashed debug system just in case and then flashed mik's rom. I don't know where did it go wrong.
Would have been great if someone made a step by step video and put that on youtube
Have you wiped cache/dalvink cache/android secure and the rest from the wipe menu?

Yes, I think so. Don't worry about it for the moment. if it worked for you, it will work for me too. I may have missed something that i can't remember. I will give it a try again this weekend
Although if you could give me the Partition requirements. I know the swap should be zero. But how much should i use for ext2?
Ext partiton can be how big you want, it's where a2sd puts the files and other cache info. I use 512 mb, and works flawless.
I will make a video guide in the morning, and link it in the original post.

Do I need to install that new recovery? Or is the one you posted a link to OK?
There is a new recovery that's been in the development forum for a few weeks that says it's for gingerbread.

The link i posted goes to another thread that explains some basic stuff. Including the recovery. But i didn't find any problems using different versions of custom recovery. So go for which one you like more, as long as it can backup your system
1. go in recovery mode
2. wipe everything
3. then go to others
4. mount/system
5. flash the system zip
6. flash the rom zip
7. reboot
it worked for me. hope it helps
Ruwin buddy, you will be happy to know that i am using Mik's rom. I still don't know what went wrong last time. If some thing that i had done differently, that would not upgrading ext3 to ext4.
Thanks buddy for the support and the tips
Thank you very much!!! Will try this today.
Is it possible to get the SMS widget back? The simple one from Market sucks...
Do I need to partition the SD-card?? The directions made no mention of this.
how to enable 3G mode only in this rom ?
Good work, very useful.

[Q] Kernel question!

So I installed ginger edition rc1 and want to know if I can switch to the 1400 overclock kernel ? Do I do this with cwm? The same way I installed my rom? I am new to this! Do I have to wipe anything? Do I just select the install from zip option?

Yes you can, just follow the directions on pershoot's blog.
Before you do anything, make a backup in CWM. If things go horribly wrong, you can always restore that backup to undo everything.
Then it's pretty much just a matter of downloading the gingerbread version (it has gb in the name) of the kernel (a zip file) on your pad, in the root of the SDCard. Reboot into CWM, wipe dalvik cache (under advanced in cwm menus) then install the zip from SDCard, select the kernel zip, and then... reboot.

Installing CM7.1

I would like to install the CM7.1 Stable that just came out. I've read the cyanogenmodwiki instructions and the instructions here, but I find both to to be confusing and conflicting with each other. I also watched the mobiletechvideo.com installation youtube.
I am wondering if the following would work.
From JFD Stock 2.1 root the phone and download Rom Manager.
In Rom Manager Flash Vibrant MTD (not Galaxy S Vibrant) Clockworkmod Recovery
Boot into recovery.
Wipe/format and fix permissions
Flash Cyanogenmod 7.1 stable +gapps
Reboot.
I am confused though, in the cmwiki instructions it says to format - but if I format everything won't the cm7.1 zip file on the internal SD also be destroyed?
Thanks in advance.
No, that would be a good method. It will still be on your sd, weeping doesn't format your card. (formatting your card would, different things).
Technically, you could Odin to jfd, take the cm7.1 download and my option b update.zip (noob guide) and that's all you need... Move those 2 to your internal.
Odin
Let it boot
Hold in both volumes + power
At Vibrant screen (booting) release
Now in stock recovery, reinstall packages
Now in cwr, flash 7.1
Reboot
done.

so no need to worry about the whole RFS vs YAFFS conundrum?
What issue? Even the main man himself (atinm) gives you both install methods.. The steps above are tested and work, much faster also. You could be booting 7.1 in under 10 minutes.
Looks like a nightly is already out too. I'd go stable.

Well that's exactly what I did to upgrade. I'm coming from the latest update from passion but here's the steps I took to install it:
1. Made a backup of all my applications, etc
2. Wipe data, Wipe Cache, Wipe Delvik
3. install zip from sd card > choose zip from sd card > schimeraxxxxxxxxx.zip
4. Now an installer will come up and now follow the steps from it.
5. Your done
Also I can't help you with the kernel cause I have no knowledge based on those, sorry.
For the kernel, the best you can download would be the devil kernels. Make sure they are compatible with datadata if you have it.

2.2 to Slim Bean 4.1.2

Sorry, I am new to all of this. I recently just rooted my t959 and it is running on 2.2. I've been looking for tuts on how to update to Slim Bean 4.1.2, but haven't found any. I also don't understand the OP instructions.
Upgrading Slim Bean
Unless we specify otherwise in changelog
Reboot to recovery, wipe cache, dalvik cache then just flash your device zip. If you were with SlimBean 2.7 or newer you are done, all your addons will be backed up.
If you are on an earlier SlimBean version then 2.7 please flash also all the addons you need. Reboot.
From Froyo/GB Rom to SlimBean
Get yourself booted with cm9 or cm10. then follow the steps "From another JB or ICS ROM"
From another JB or ICS Rom to SlimBean
Download device_x.x.zip, slim_gapps.zip.
Enter CWM, wipe data, format system ( in mounts and storage)
Flash Device_x.x.zip***, then MUST flash slim_gapps.zip (other files optional)
*** - If the flash is too quick ( < 5 seconds or so), reflash device before flashing common or other zip files.

Would anyone be kind enough to post a step by step or a link on how to update it?
Much thanks.

Since SlimBean is based off CyanogenMod 9/10 and needs alot of the kernel/firmware flashes, you must flash CM 10 or 9 before flashign Slim Bean.
The easiest way to do this is through ClockworkMod Recovery and the easiest way to get ClockworkMod installed is through ROM Manager.
1. Download ROM Manager through Play Store
2. Open up ROM Manager and select the first option "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
3. Download CyanogenMod 10 and the latest Slim Bean which should be version 2.8
4. Reboot into recovery through the option in ROM Manager
5. Clear data, cache, and Dalvik cache.
6. Install ZIP from SD Card > Choose ZIP from SD Card > Pick CyanogenMod 10 FIRST
7. Let it flash all the way through and then reboot your phone when you are back at the recovery menu
8. Boot into CyanogenMod 10 ROM and play around to make sure everything is working and good
9. Go into Play Store and install ROM Manager again
10. This time, just boot into recovery. No need to reflash ClockworkMod since you already have it.
11. Clear data, cache, and Dalvik cache.
12. Install ZIP from SD Card > Choose ZIP from SD Card > Pick SlimBeanT959 rom this time
13. Reboot into SlimBean to make sure everything works. If so, go back into recovery and flash the Slim Gapps and whatever else you may want to use.
Good luck and enjoy SlimBean.
