Purpose of the usb jig? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I get that the usb jig resets the flash count and preventing the yellow triangle. But on the other hand what is this yellow triangle hurting other than... "oh no there's a yellow triangle on bootup now" ?
Thanks!

Its main purpose is to help recover from bricks and get into download mode...the other stuff it does is just a bonus.

that's it. its not doing anything else to the phone other than showing a yellow triangle.

Also, I hear a lot of talk about bricking this phone. I came from a desire HD and bricking was virtually unheard of. What makes it so easy to brick this device that I should watch out for?

It isn't - in fact it's extremely difficult to brick this device. As long as you don't flash bootloaders, you're good.
I've also NEVER seen a case on the Infuse or this device where the jig worked to get someone into download mode when VolUp + VolDn + USB insertion didn't.
The benefit of the jig is to reset the "custom binary flash" counter, which is something that Samsung can potentially use to deny you warranty service.

True brick is very difficult. This is usually caused by the flash being interupted while flashing bootloaders. There should be no reason to flash bootloaders, however.
What is usually referred to as soft brick is caused when the flash of the kernel, rom, or modem goes wrong. This is recoverable by going back into download mode and reflashing. Consequently it is not really a brick.
The jig puts the phone into download mode. It was originally needed on the AT&T Captivate because some of the phones had a manufacturing flaw in which they could not be put into download mode with the button combo. The fact that it clears the flash counter on the SGS II is incidental.

It's impossible to brick unless you flash broken, mismatching, or corrupt bootloaders.
If the phone responds in any matter at all then it's saveable via Jig.

The reason is all cosmetic, BUT speaking just for myself I like to see
my phone looking and working as close to perfection as I can make it
so even that yellow triangle spoils my fun.

On the Captivate when you got the Phone-!-Computer you needed a jig.
For some reason the Infuse didn't.

[Q] Hard brick? "Battery too low to flash"

My brother sent us the Atrix (AT&T) after he had unlocked the phone. He had it factory reset and now I'm getting an error message as follows:
"Failed to boot 0x1000
Entering NvFlash Recovery Mode
Battery is too low to flash"
He said it worked fine before he sent the phone...and neither of us are quite sure whether or not it is fixable. Is it hard bricked or is there any way to fix this?

From what I saw (searching for hours), this hasn't been straight answered. I've seen different answers on different threads. One saying to try a different battery, and another saying that yes, it is hard bricked.
Ever heard of the mcgyver cable basically u sacrifice a data cable cut of the part that jacks in the phone and connect the open wires directly to your battery. Plug it in and leave it for a while. Check the defy furoms or just google it
That spliced up cable works, fixed mine like that and posted a thread here about it a while ago.

Ouch! ..sounds like a hard brick, you may need to JTAG. Connexion25 does it. You can try download mode via jig. You can go to radio shack and make one or buy a nice tidy one already made.

Bricked Galaxy Note

Kind of a loss here. I have a At&T Galaxy note that I rooted and put clock work recovery mod on.
I accidentally downloaded a rom for the SGH-I777 not 717, and tried to flash in CWM. Now my phone wont even power on. Am I totally screwed?
Can you get into download mode or cwm from the powered off state?

The answer to everything is not 'get a replacement'. The guy above asking if download mode is accessible is spot on.
Provided you can get in there, reflashing a stock package for the i717 isn't impossible and should restore full functionality.
Best of luck
You can always try the Samsung Jig, it still works on my Note.

Download mode is not only if the phone powers on.
there maybe other things going on. the DL mode is a completely valid question. and i hope that he can.
a jig may work as well, i had luck with home made jigs from resiters. with about the 301 of resistance. but that was not for the note.

If can not get in download mode, No one can save you here. The usb jig is your only hope you have. Or send it out to get repaired.
If you flash the wrong rom your phone needs JTAG service. You can send it from Nigeria using DHL and pre-pay the JTAG guy at www.mobiletechvideos.com. The JTAG is $50 but I don't know the shipping cost.

Before I Do Anything, Jig

Hey guy,
I recently bricked my phone and sought assistance first before I came to this. I have "hard bricked" my phone so i'm only left with two options: jig it or jtag it. Of course since the former is cheaper, I wanted to try that first, and if that fails, I will jtag. My question is where can I find a jig for the galaxy note I717? Help would be appreciated!
Don't bother. Brick = JTAG

That is completely not true.
A jig is not, and never was, intended to fix a hard brick.
It first made its appearance with the galaxy s 1 variants because certain bootloaders would disable all button combos, making an easily fixable bootloop (soft brick) a much more tricky situation, so it was discovered that shorting pins 4 and 5 on a usb board with 301k ohms would force download mode ON A PHONE THAT WASN'T HARD BRICKED.
When the galaxy s2 was released, it was discovered that the jig not only forced download mode, but reset the flash counter as well.
On the note, it will force download mode if you're in a bootloop but not reset the flash counter, however the button combos should always work on a note with working bootloaders so the jig is superfluous.
Also, the resistors used play a role in whether the jig will do anything.
My jig boots download mode on my old captivate and my note, but the resistance is out of tolerance on my brother in law's galaxy s2 and does nothing.
Tl;Dr: jigs work for the purpose they were intended to.
i recently hard bricked and paid mobiletechvideo to jtag it for me. back like new

First hard brick? HELP!

I was trying to do an odin factory restore, everything looked as if it went ok. Green pass and all but no reboot on the phone. Im getting NOT a single thing from the device (no led, no screen, no downloading menu) but when plugged into the PC it recognizes something being connected and sounds off but odin won't find it either. These are the directions I followed http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=237
after flashing I noticed up on the title it says SPH-I545 but it says for verizon. Any help would be appreciated. The battery should be about 60%.

Yes, I have been trying everything for hours now. I know this is only my second post, but Ive been doing this since the beginning. I have always received the help I needed via these forums, but clearly something has happened and I've soft bricked on many a droid phone and always found my way to a solution, but no lights, no vibration, yet when plugged into a computer, just as the first post mentions....it can tell a device was plugged in, but driver installation fails. I'm almost certain I hard bricked it and I'm very upset. I have an insurance policy that covers absolutely anything with a brand new device, but I have never filed a claim and can't afford to wait. I really messed up this time.....

If you can not get into odinmode (download mode) or recovery, sounds like you are hard bricked and out of luck.
If you CAN get into odin mode, are you on Mdk or me7? Can use this method then. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
Only other suggestion is to get the "kies" software and do an emergency update from there if it can recognize the device correctly.
From past experience when i bricked a previous smartphone, the end result was my computer would beep and recognize something was connecting, but never add it to devices would contiously beep on and off if i unplugged and plugged back in, and phone would not boot into any mode.
Damn. Thanks for the info.
