I have had my galaxy s2 for 3 days now and despite following all related posts to root my handset and reading through hundreds of pages in various threads i am hitting either out of date information or conflicting information or lack of information referring to my kernal version.
My Handset is a uk orange branded handset with the following
Kernal version 2.6.35.7-I9100BVKH2-CL453351 [email protected]#2
BUILD NUMBER GINGERBREAD.BVKH2
BASEBAND VERSION I9100BVKH1
FTA HW VERSION : REV1.4

08.10.2011][CF-Root v4.3] KE*, KF*, KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/3/4, KI2/3/4/8 - su+bb+CWM4
I COULD NOT FIND A KH2 DOWNLOAD LINK
Also refferences to getting a jig am i right in thinking that because my handset is new it will not work for me?
I know it seems like i am asking someone to do all the hard work for me but despite managing to root my previous handsets, desire, hero, dell streak, x10 etc i really am struggling to grasp what is rellevent to my handset and firmware. please help happy to make donation to anyone who can help me out here
You wont find a KH2 link, its Orange network (BV) you need to unbrand yer phone with the XXKi or XWKi numbers. that is why you need to use that link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
but read up on what you also need to do.
and i can unbrand without having root? (thanks for the reply )

i was looking to root so i could instal custom rom and wrongly thought i needed it to get rid of all the orange crap from my handset. i did not realise i could put unbranded rom on without root,
But am i right in assuming as far as custom roms go i will need root access?

No
But most custom roms require CWM 4 for flashing the rom so in effect yes .

Sorry if the question is really really simple in advance!
My phone is currently
Baseband - I9100XXDJ
Kernel - I9100XWKE2
Build - Gingerbread.XWKE2
Now i've seen the various insecure kernels and a couple of roms, but the roms mention xwke7. so am I able to flash with a newer kernel or do i have to stick on the same kernel i have now. will me moving from ke2 to ke7 do anything to my phone apart from just update the kernel?
What i had hoped to do was:
- install villianrom
- install the stock ke7 kernel to improve battery life (mine is dreadful atm, i barely get 10 hours out of it in standby!)
- have new rom with root access
would i be able to do this? the phone is on O2 with the O2 boot animation and i've read its possible to flash back to o2 image if needed?
any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

You update the firmware not just the kernel its all in one package .

Yes but you need to have saved to O2 rom .
Luckily O2 original rom is posted in the dev section .
Gingerbread 2.3.4 is rumoured/fact to arrive by next week in which case i would not update to KE7 ..
You can mix kernels and roms even modems and roms but that would be your choice ..

thanks for the advice
so if i wait to update to 2.3.4 what options do i then have?
instead of starting a new thread thought i would post here.
I am wanting to root my SGS2 and have read through the CF-Root thread.
Im just a bit confused/aprehensive as to the firmware. My phone says -
Baseband: I9100BOKD1
Kernal version: BOKE3
do i have to stick to the same firmware for rooting so KE3 over KE3 or can i just use the KE7 firmware to gain root?
Thanks
Your chice KE7 is later firmware but 2.3.4 due anytime may pay to wait .

Did you even look for the answer before asking for it?
It's from Hong Kong.
The firmware as been freely available since July 15 on SamFirm if you botch up your flashing attempts, and it took me roughly 15 seconds in the search bar to find that all that out.
Enjoy
i already read all of it but none of the firmware matched mine..
now i felt hesitated to root mine because i'm afraid i didnt get the original firmware back..

As the subject states, I'm trying to identify the right unlocked and original kernel to use with the latest [PDA:KH2 / PHONE:KH1 / CSC:KH2 (ORA)] to root the device? In case it matters, this is for an SGS2 on Orange in the UK.

I dont really understand the post but at a guess you are trying to root your phone ???
But the topic is posted as kernel for kies update ???
Kies loads off firmware details not kernel .
latest Kies may not update non standard firmware .
Root + CWM .

Oops, forgot the root bit
Yep, I'm trying to root the phone with the aforementioned level of firmware, but I cannot see the KH2 rooted and original around anywhere.
KH2 root no you will have to follow the instructions and use KH1 or KH3 .

Hi guys
Thx for reading this post.
I am writing because recently I got a 2nd hand i1900
And I am really eager to root it and install custom roms like my other devices.
But what hold me back is this i1900 is apparently rooted from the previous guy.
But unfortunally he probably only rooted it but did not install CWM, as I don't see the ROM Manger app and neither I just go to normal download mode instead of CWM recovery
Here is some information in the About phone page
Model number GT-I9100
Android version 2.3.3
Baseband version I9100XXKE4
Kernel version [email protected]#2
Build number GINGBREAD.ZSKF1
One more thing, I am actually quite certain this is a generic HONG KONG I9100, as the phone comes with the warranty card and the IMEI matches.
Unless the previous guy was able to amed that.
What I want to know is IF CF-Root-SGS2_XW_CLK_KF3-v4.0-CWM4.zip should be the choice of root and CWM for my case.
According to Chainfire state that "just match the download"

Thx again for reading~~
Dont use Rom Manager .
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
You have a very very old kernel with newer baseband .
You should upgrade to Android 2.3.6 then root .

But with the down of Multiupload, I can find those latest firmware and kernels back.
Is there any another ways to do it
Like rooting directly with a CF-root?
or may be this, I just found another one listed on cyanogenmod wiki
Mainly using Heimdall
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide
In my case, can i ignore the fact that I am already rooted, but continue to use heimdall to root again and install CWM
THX again.
Hey guys.
I just received a TRE (Three) Italy branded GSG 2 with the following PDA, PHONE and CSC info here:
PDA : I9100 XWKI8
PHONE : I9100 NEKI2
CSC : I9100 HUIKI1
If I install the XWKI8 Stock Kernel from here, using ODIN, will that work ? I want the same version of software, but with NO BRANDING.
Afterwards I want to upgrade my phone to ICS, but I just want to get rid of the 3 (Three) icons and bootscreen first.. Afterwards If I want to go back to the 3 (Three) version if I install the one with the info above will it work ?
Thanks a lot guys.
Stock answer is read the debranding post .

No as you dont have a clue and need to read the Faqs and Guides first .
Kernels are not firmware you require full firmware . Read the thread instructions .

Q
Okay. Got it. read them. Ty JJe.
So from what I've read I understand that I can install whatever firmware that is available here, under the OFFICIAL FIRMWARE section, the original and current firmware that I've got being available here, under the 3 Network, under Italy.
Can I install _ANY_ firmware ? Or any other one that has the same PDA version (XWKI8) ?
Afterwards.. If I want to go back to the original FW the phone had, is flashing the firmware version above, under the 3 network, Italy everything I have to do ? If for example I've got a problem with the phone or software and want to use its warranty. Ty.
Thanks all.

As JJEgan told you, you can flash any firmware. Just a suggestion: After you change the firmware, reflash the NEKI2 modem. It's one of the best for 3 in italy
