Anybody did an unroot and claimed warranty?
I wanted to make sure I can revert back and claim warranty if situation arrises in future..
Going to flash tomorrow!
Thank you all in advance
Unroot and use a USB jig to reset the counter and you should be fine.

Yeah mate. Was stupid enough not to back-up my efs folder and lost my IMEI.Wiped completely.Flashed back to stock used a jig and said kies crashed during an update and they fixed it under warranty.
Thank you for the reply..
What is the efs folder? Have never heard of it? Installing custom roms screws up IMEI?

if u are using 2.3.5(KI3), u need to flash the older version of bootloader via odin otherwise u cannot use the JIG to reset counts.

Remember it for the next time ... first create a backup !

I am a newbie, although I rooted my phone months ago. I will be upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich soon and am looking for the best, easiest, and safest way to do it. Most of all, I'm soooo glad and thankful you shared this important information on how to back up my efs folder.
Thank you so much for the information. By the way, this is my first real post here although I've relied heavily on this forum for information and advice.
I love this forum!:good:
Hello mates
This is my first post on s3 forum and i have some doubts
I bought my S3 yesterday sim locked in between i got him sim unlocked via cable.
My doubts ... Is on 4.1.1 and i want to flash clean stock 4.1.2. Can i flash the rom safely via odin without the risk of flashing screw my IMEI or re-lock my phone?
Should i backup efs (if so .... whats the best efs backup method?) at this point and then go for it
Or theres no problem in flashing a stock or any other rom?
Thanks
Ps: my phone is rooted used cf root.

you should deffinately backup you EFS, there has been many post's recently with people buggering up their imei's - did a search :silly: and found an app called ktool which backs up your efs folder, I've never used it looks like it does the job. Also make a backup of your current rom you're using. just incase.
FYI you will lose root if you flash a sammobile FW via odin
I know about that ... I'm new on s3 not new on flashing
i'm just afraid to corrupt efs

Sorry for being thorough! I've only flashed samsung so wasn't sure if it was the same as what you're used to! In answer to your question then. Yes backup your efs, if there is a chance of it ever being corrupt its best to have a working copy. No brainer really!

al i want know is the safest method to backup efs?
did u backed up your's? if so ... using what?
That app I mentioned will work just fine, I also copied my efs folder to my extSD and then compressed it to zip, then I copied it to my pc. It would then just be a case (if it ever fubars up)copying that folder back over to /system/
Apologies if I was rude, its my bedtime
Thanks a lot gonna backup it up tomorrow and flash stock by odin now its my bedtime 2 take care mate
We are so manny that have tried alot here, but our SGS3 have turned into a PDA and no use Tried earliere to create a guide or get one that worked after installing a MG4 ROM, but did not have any success and my phone still have the genetric IMEI, everybody says restore your EFS backup BUT I don't have any of those.
Know here is a solution for it, but have not foundt it yet, alot of people are crying ablout this that our fones are useless.
Moderators says stop posting and read 1000's of other post that have the same problem, but when I don't have found any or nobody have PM'ed me with a solution, then I ask before everybody is post about the same problem.
Can anyone make a stiky post with some ways to restore lost IMEI or guide us true a restore of a rom that reads our IMEI correct again?

Step 1) restore efs backup
Step 2) try reflash original rom
Step 3) if you were ever on mg4, ensure you stick with mg4 baseband
Step 4) send for repair
There's your guide.

You were not alone my friend. I had same issue and same levels of frustration for days.
You could have seen my thread but it was sgy specific.
"Solution": Use odin flash stock rom firmware with "Clear EFS".and "Repartition" checked.
The above was only solution that worked for me. I recovered imei.
Once restored I took backup of EFS using galaxytoolbox app on playstore and copied those img files to pc for future emergency.

You can't find a solution to EFS corruption when not having a backup, because there isn't one! If the three suggestions by RootSU don't work then no amount of crying is going to fix your phone, send it for repair.
All the guides and stickies have good advise on what to do before you customise your phone -backup your efs folder keep it safe.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I think i9300 users should only take advice from other i9300 users, when we're talking about things like efs which differs considerably between Samsung models.

I suppose if you are desperate and going to need a paid for repair then any trick posted will be tried .
But a significant proportion of bricked phone are due to advice not for that phone .
In some cases an IMEI repair may be done under warranty but the more you mess about the greater the risk of having to pay for a repair .

Hi,
It's likely that when you updated, the EFS format changed. All you need to do is to update the Radio/Baseband.Modem of your device.
Since I'm new around here, I'm not allowed to post links. Try replacing the hxxp with http.

See point number 2 of that post, download the EFS2 compatible modem and flash it with Odin.

Dear everyone,
i am getting in the next days the samsung galaxy s3 and i would like to prepare myself about what i should do to root the phone (and save the EFS folder).
I had from a colleague a samsung galaxy s2 which lost the IMEI and EFS folder, that's why i know that is crucial to save all. Plus i excercised on it to root the phone.
On the SG S2 i routed the phone loading the "philz-touch_3.00_i9100-signed.zip" with the phone and then applying the "Root_SuperSU.0.98-Busybox.1.20.2-signed.zip".
Phone was magically simple rooted and as simple as that, could be again unrooted.
Now, I am checking what to do for the samsung galaxy s3, but it seems that the procedure is not so simple and riskless anymore.
I read almost everywhere that the procedure is the one found on this website http://techverse.net/root-samsung-galaxy-s3-android-4-3-jellybean/
The procedure descripted asks me to use odin and from my experience with SG S2, this is there for reflashing the phone, or better to put a new rom in it. So if i did not understand wrong, with that procedure i basically put a new rom that is rooted. Am i right?
this is not really a good solution for me, as the unroot would not work good anymore.
Searching then deeper in the xda forum, i find this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/orig-development/i93xx-philz-touch-t2002953
So this seems to be much more similar to the one i applied to my sg s2.
Now the question is, why if this is much more simple, is so less shown as a solution and result on google?
is that "philz_touch_xxx.zip" + "Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip" for rooting the SG S3 as easy as with the S2?
Sorry if this question might have been already posted and answered. i just could not find it in the forum.
Thank you in advance for your attention!

So you mean that can be easily rooted with the files "philz_touch_xxx.zip" + "Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip" ?
does it flash a new rom somehow or just makes the device rooted?

ok so basically i just have to press volume up, home, power on button, open the CMW in the sd ("philz_touch_xxx.zip"), then from there apply the zip file "Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip".
correct?
sorry that i ask over and over, but i cannot brick this phone
You can't install philz recovery from the stock recovery, you would need to flash the .tar version with odin -so you would be better to use CF autoroot as recommended in the sticky guides.

WOW thank you so much! I read it and now i have much clearer ideas.
SO: i will just root installing a custom recovery, but no room. perfect and clear like water.
Now i have a question that might have been answered in those threads but i just did not see it (or i would not ask i promise):
If i let the samsung galaxy S3 android upgrade to the latest android version through the official tool KIES, and THEN i make the root, so i have the latest android version, is it possible? If yes, can i use the same tools indicated in http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/ref-understanding-basics-rooting-s3-gt-t2362743 ?

AWESOME!! so that means also that if would ever come out any future android upgrade, in order to upgrade officially i should unroot the device, restore the stock recovery, update via kies and then re-root again. I think i got the whole thing!!

I was checking on the samsung galaxy S2 (previous phone) the CMW installed. There, in backup and restore, there is "backup" "restore" "delete"....
is that backup the NANDROID backup? if so, why isn't that clear like idiot prove (like me ) ?
Okay. Flash cf auto root in odin. Just go download mode on ur fone, then connect it to the pc. Then just flash the cfautoroot file in odin. No nid for cwm. Flash cwm AFTER u flash cfautoroot in odin.

Instead of asking people to write out exactly what you want to do, just go and follow the guide -they are provided for that reason to help new users safely root etc.
