CM7 Pics vs. Stock Rom Pics - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

So I'm very tempted to make the jump to CM7, but I really like the Camera included with the Stock Rom. In my previous experiences with CM7, I've not been too happy with the camera app. On my Atrix 4G I installed the MIUI 1.7 Camera app and it was better but lacked FFC support and still didn't have the same quality and the stock app. So my question and request is for people to post pictures they have taken with maybe both or one of the Roms. I wanna see the differences. I would appreciate any pics! Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the AOSP screen shots, I'm a little more interested in pictures taken with the camera apps on the 2 different Roms!

Gotcha. I sorry!
On cm7 you can't focus by pressing the screen. It only focuses on the center with the shutter button.
Also image is only wide and fills screen at 2.5 mp.

Meh, Looks like i'm sticking with the stock based Roms for now. Unless the quality of the pictures it takes is close to the same!

It takes 8MP pics along with many other settings. I think it takes great clear pics and I haven't notice a difference in quality between stock camera and CM7 camera quality wise. It may not have all the same functions and the layout is different but other than the touch to focus I think it has all the settings. If you are on stock just MAKE SURE you do a nadroid backup. If you don't like CM7 you can just go back into recovery, wipe data/factory reset, restore nandroid backup of stock rom and you will be EXACTLY where you left off. It is ALOT easier going back to stock or any other roms via nandroid backup that on older captivates or sgs1's.

You are 100% correct about the CM7's camera user interface (UI).
Even before taking pictures or videos with it, just looking at CM7's LCD
anyone can see that CM7's user interface looks like some cheapy camera
and not something which is sopposed to be just about top of the line.
CM7 always had this issue even when I used to have the Captivate phone.
I just do not understand why some of the DEVS cannot replace the
camera's user interface with a much nicer looking one after all this time.
So far I was only commenting on the cosmetic aspects of the CM7's camera.
Now I will tell you about the quality of the actual videos and snapshots
I have done a lot of tests with.
#1: CM7 cannot record videos in 1080p HD
#2: CM7 cannot record at the full 30 fps which is very noticable.
#3: CM7 cannot do continuous auto-focus while recording videos.
Flash CyanogenMOD rom then record some videos of moving cars or people
walking or or running or you can simply put a can of pepsi in front of the
phone about 3 feet from the camera lens on a table or something while
moving the phone left to right, right to left, up and down while focusing in
on the can of pepsi on a table.
Do this for a couple minutes and you will see exactly what I am talking
about. Then do this same test using the STOCK GB rom and you will see
a day and night difference in the two recordings quality.
CM7 only records at approx. 15 to 21fps constantly changing rates making
the recordings look jerky and unprofessional unless you are recording
stationary objects or people who are are just sitting on a chair talking but
with little motion or movement.
One other thing, when taking snapshots with CM7 rom the auto focus takes
about twice as long for it to lock onto anything you are taking pictures of.
These are the main reasons I have not taken the Cyanogen route yet.
I really do like most all other aspects of the CyanogenMOD rom a lot
but until all the camera issues have been fixed I will simply stick with
GTG's "noname" custom rom which after much testing I find to be the
best and the most reliable custom rom which is availble for our phones
at this time.
After all, the camera part in any cell phone is one of it's highest selling
points especially for people like myself who love photograpy.
I hope all this info has helped you and other's too.

Awesome info! It helps tremendously. I've found the Unnamed Rom to be the best so far as well. Looks like ill stick with it.

Proof that megapixels don't matter...smh for all the idiots

http://phandroid.com/2011/07/06/htc-evo-3d-vs-htc-evo-4g-2d-camera-comparison-forum-talk/
Mainly posted this for all the comments I read stating...I hate the evo 3d I wish it was the same phone just without the 3d and with the same camera as the evo because 8 is 3 more higher giggerpixels than 5...
point of the thread is...MEGAPIXELS ARE NOT A TRUE INDICATION OF WHAT IS "BETTER". same goes for quadrant scores...anyway thanks for reading, comment beeeeeeeeeeeeeeelow
While I agree that megapixels do not matter so much when it comes to picture quality I have to say my E4G took much better pictures than what he has there. It can't compete with my Canon T1i, but, as someone mentions in the comments there, the stock ROM was made to use the Evo's camera and takes much better pictures than anything I've seen CM7 take. Honestly I was impressed with the Evo 4Gs camera when it was used with proper lighting.
My 3d takes much better pics then my 4g. The colors and clarity have been much better for me on the 3d.
I do not understand why anyone has complained about the camera. The only complaint I have is I wish there was no delay when taking a picture and I would truly be happy. This of course is not a complaint just towards the 3d but seems to be the norm for all camera phones.

If you go to settings when in the stock camera app go to 'review duration' and select 'no review' and off and the delay is gone. Makes taking pics real snappy.
Is it just me or did a lot of the 8mp pics look much better, more life-like and realistic. Just the first picture looked better with the 5mp to me. Who knows though...I'm old and probably need glasses.

those M&Ms look awesome BTW...
Although I do love my phone very much, I think fanaticism is to blame... Fanatics are the guys who get mad at any little negative comment or personal opinion that does not agree with their logic. i.e.- the whole camera thing ii treated ii is mentioning... I swear it's like people use "Text search" on the page and look for threads that say IMO, or I THINK... It's kinda pathetic. A valid point I say OP.
IMO I think either camera can take amazing pictures depending on the circumstances. I own both phones and I can tell you, some pics look like crap, some look awesome. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.
Megapixels don't matter, sensor quality does. The Evo 3D sensor is a noisy mess, as are most small phone-friendly sensors, but the Evo 3D is just average at best.
Please. Massive rationalization. (Yeah, I know...from an idiot, lol).
You can only make judgements by using your own phone, your own eyes, vs other phones. Not shots via other cameras via other links/sites/unknown settings.
I've done so many comparisons...hundreds (E3D vs 4G; E3d vs SGS2; E3d vs other E3D's!....yeah camera quality was important to me this round!... that I'm really over this
But:
The average (all lighting) 2D pics in the Evo 3D are:
1. In the 2011 smartphone arena are p o o r! It's a great device but this is a fact.
.2.Are substandard vs the 4G (although settings workarounds can bring it close). Go to a sprint store. Fairly compare in average lighting.
3. Are flat out dull compared to the 8mp Sensation...which is a slight upgrade to 4G.
4. Vs SGS2, IPhone or Sony Arc? Don't need to go there!...although I think this is gonna change with HTC devices from here on out.
If you take your phone and compare to the other devices in various conditions I think you'll agree.
Still really like the E3D tho....thing smokes! Don't really know what updates/rooting will do but we'll see.
the bottom line for me is camera-wise, i want a phone that takes clear pictures that i can semi-blow up and keep "good" quality. I don't care how good they actually are, so long as i can see them and no areas are blotchy...but once again let me see to everyone, this had nothing to do with the quality of the evo 3d's camera. It has to do with the fact that people simply are assuming 8mp>5mp...not true. that is the point of my post, not that the evo 3d has a great or better than XXX's camera. wrong idea here...
Was trying to find a post somewhat related to the camera quality on the E3D (takes a while to do so on said phone) without making a new post. Here are a few pics I have taken with my phone.
Enjoy.
Edit: Seems that my phone didn't upload the same picture size for each photo even though they were all taken the same way...

[Q] ??Galaxy S3 Camera for our Notes??

Is anybody working on getting the Camera from the S3 to work on our Notes? Could anbybody update me on this situation? Would LOVE to be able to use that. Would completely COMPLETE the note experience to the fullest! I take LOTS and LOTS of pictures so this is an extreme interest for me!!! (btw I looked around about it and haven't found anything much about this surprisingly)
Are you talking about a hardware swap? or are you talking about the software? and what are the differences in both? Pardon my ignorance
Sorry not to specify. The apk basically is what I am talking about to simplify it. Looking for the whole no shutter lag experience.

This would be almost impossible, as it would need the Galaxy s3's hardware and framework.
If this is impossible, then is there an alternative? I just would like yo be able to snap photos faster with at least the same quality as the Note has now..

Sure about that? I'm pretty sure that's software related. There are plenty of apps (fast burst, camera FX, etc) that do no shutter lag and fast burst sequences.

Your never gonna be able to do that and have the same quality photos. The faster the shutter speed is the more quality suffers but there are several apps that let you take pictures in burst but most will tell you that quality will suffer. Search "fast burst camera" in the Play Market. Also there are several videos of the Note and S3 head to head and you can see the Note takes a much better picture eventhough they both have 8MP cameras cause the shutter speed on the Note is slower which means better quality.

He is right. The camera hardware is upgraded with a different shutter. The burst mode is software but a different shutter is used so that the photos still keep some of the quality they lose from the burst sequence and so the shutter will be consistanly opening at the same speed no matter what mode the camera is set to. Meaning the picture quality will be the same in burst sequence and normal mode, while on the Note the quality is different when taking fast burst pictures than it is when taking a normal picture.

[Q] HTC One Camera Quality?

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing or noticing this, or if it's just me, but the pictures produced by my HTC One are often soft around the edges while sharp in the middle and seem to have a fair bit of noise. Attached are sample images. I have not unlocked the bootloader, it is completely bone stock.

Not sure if just me or if my expectations of the camera were higher than they should have been.
The camera is one of questionable execution. 4mp bundled with a high quality image sensor capable of 13mp and image cpu. I would not be surprised if HTC releases a camera update that lets the end user choose above 4mp.
I'm still skeptical of the camera but this phone is the most powerful I've owned.

yea same dmobile1337. i dont know if i have to change some setting or what. every time i take a picture, i notice lots of noise and when i zoom in a little, clarity is significantly gone. i know a 4mp cant have the same res as a higher mp camera but after reading that the htc one camera is short of amazing, i am now starting to wonder if i got a defective unit.
wrong section
and i think the camera is fine give the devs some time and its going to get lots better the default camera on the onex was great after some tweaks it was OMFG !!! good
The softness is the ois. If you read anandtechs review he points this out. Its a software bug I imagine HTC will fix.

It is kind of awkward for HTC to brand an "enhanced" 4mp camera for it's "epic" phone, but then again compare it to other phones on the prepaid side that are still stuck with 5mp cameras and run on decent hardware, the quality is noticeably better on the HTC one.
The unit is not defective, I doubt HTC would have left out the option to utilize a high quality 4mp mode with the ability to shoot in higher resolution.

The Camera is Beautiful take i assure you. i mean its not no SLR but still :good: this is a picture of the virgin Mary statue i have in my home
I've had the same problem. If I take a picture of something, the entire picture doesn't seem in focus. There's usually a corner of the picture that's blurry or soft and it's really aggravating me. After what all the reviews said about the camera I'm just not seeing anything to be impressed about. It's also really noisy like someone else said.

That picture looks great! Tell me though, are you stock or running a custom rom? The international base is a later revision than stock ATT and I read somewhere when I was drunk (so I guess it might have been nothing but I remember reading it...) that HTC made some camera improvements later on. Makes me wonder if those are in the base that the international version is running, or that the lion's share of custom roms available to us are on.
Not trying to gripe, I love everything about this phone. In fact, it's such a great device that I expect it is something I am doing wrong or something that HTC has already fixed that hasn't trickled down yet.
I've been pleasantly surprised with the quality of pictures, particularly in daylight.

They are probably busy compatibility testing their preloaded apps or making updates and tweaks of their own for performance. Or making sure that if you use one of their preloaded apps on the new build it doesn't brick the device or something horribly sinister like that. I am an instant gratification type, but working in corporate america taught me that software updates are far from an overnight thing. I wish it had come out closer to release so I didn't have to install a custom ROM but I am sincerely glad I took the time to do so. Back button hold for menu is a real life saver in some apps and the camera improvements are worth it as well. If you choose to wait and keep stock, good things are right around the corner.

Hmm disagree there. Yes, the stock AOSP maybe, but once you use the modded one with ultrapixel, you'll wonder why everyone thinks the Sammy camera is better (until you get into low light or if you have Parkinsons or something)

There are literally no bad cameras, AOSP or not, only bad photographers. I mean, the One doesn't have the best camera around but there are some awesome shots to be taken with it, if you're a master photographer.
All phone cameras have their own issues. Its hardware mainly. Compare the s3 camera to almost any dedicated compact of the same "on paper" specs and you'll see.
Oems just can't afford to make the phone camera that good. With the S3, its low light. With the Xperia T its the flash....
That said, you can get some good shots with them. Its just the tolerance on the perfect conditions is much smaller than a compact.

Yes. I Love SlimKat and SOKP (also CM11 with my previous phone), BUT the picture quality is worse compared to stock sammy roms. Fully working HDR mode is not easy in AOKP roms.
Hello everybody,
Can you please tell me which custom ROM I should install to get the best camera (photos&videos) experience?
I´m running LiquidSmooth right now and although I have great battery and high customisation, photos and videos aren´t really that great, specially comparing to the original Samsung ROM the phone came with.
Can you please help suggesting me some other options?
Thank you all!

anyone else find this phone boring?

U really had to start a new thread for this? I'm guessing since the Note 7 recall, this was your only choice?

Note 7 is good for a stranded person in the middle of the woods. Bam camp fire!

G5 is also packed with features and you can also silence the call when you place the phone face down ..just sayin...
Note 7 was a great device though..
(Especially during the winter)

I like the Lg G5 massively over the note 7 just for the wide angle camera alone. Keeping the phone screen on while looking at it is possibly the worst gimmick ever.

I wish it did have the screen stay on feature when watching a video on Facebook or whatnot where you gotta move the screen once in a while to stop it from dimming. Yeah the note 7 was a failure and it also was a slow phone (Snapdragon model) but this phone having the same chip runs a lot better. Must be better optimized. The note 7 cam does beat the main cam on this phone tho, it also took HDR pics super fast. Pros and cons to everything.

No, I love the G5
Let's get this clear the G5 has the face down silence option, and if it's packed with features, u just have to look for them in the settings, and beside all that the wide angle lens is the most innovative camera feature ever on a smartphone, what would u do if u had a pixel ?
Coming from Motorola, Lenovo, and Huawei phones, and just looking at stock settings on the G5, I'm pretty impressed by what LG included. Just to be able to change global font and theme without root would've been revolutionary to me not that long ago. Granted, the LG store is relatively young/limited -and I've no idea where it will go- but it's a promising starting point. 360 wideangle live wallpaper with wideangle camera lens to make your own (eventually), drag-and-drop touch button settings, multiwindow, shortcut key commands, as small a detail as battery percentage preference... Many of these things we're used to as root mods, and in that sense they may be boring, but to have them as part of the stock basis makes me look forward to expansions of customization in the not-too-distant future, if not by LG in their store, then by the enthusiasts in this realm. It's encouraging, far from boring!
