I just recently rooted the phone, and was not planning to replace the stock ROM, but in the last couple of days, I've been reconsidering this. BUt I do have some questions:
1. Can the new ROM be flashed as an "upgrade", IE, not loose everything and have to re-install apps.
2. I've had my eye on the Shooter XE or the Olympus XE ROMs, the instructions say I need to do a complete wipe before installing. Is that necessary?
3. What about updated Kernels? I'm curently running 1.11.651.3, and there's a newer version available here (Stock 1.13.651.7). Will updating to this newer kernel mess up my existing data?
4. Is there a way to backup all my apps, settings, data etc, then restore it all automatically. Titanium Backup can let you back everything up, including all the system bits and pieces, but how do I know what to back up and restore without doing any damage to the new system (like over-writing new settings and files with old ones)
Yes you must do a full wipe when changing ROMs. If you are installing a newer version of the same ROM then you can just wipe cache and dalvik cache and you won't lose anything. When using Titanium Backup it is a bad idea to restore any system apps. Stick to backing up and restoring user apps only and you will be good to go. It may backup the system apps, but I would advise to only restore the user apps. As far as your settings go, your Google account keeps them backed up if you allow it to and will restore them to your new ROM if you choose that option. Every ROM has a kernel. If you are flashing a custom kernel then just wipe cache and dalvik cache and flash the kernel. You will not lose any data when flashing a kernel by itself.

This might be a stupid question, but is there any way to get my backup restored? I just tried to restore a backup through CWM but it wiped my villainrom flash and went back to what I had before.

Is that not the whole point you backup XX try ZZZ decide you dont like it and restore the backup of XX which wipes ZZZ .
jje
yes I realized that eventually, I thought the point was to save your data like apps, themes, etc. so you can load them in the new rom. my apologies
You should not restore cache. When you boot up to a new rom, it will just redo the cache anyways.
As for Clockwork Recovery backup and restore, it does a full backup of the rom, including cache and user settings and apps. It restores back to the original rom as well.
I think you want to restore your settings and applications of your old rom into villainrom. I wouldn't recommend it as it settings for stock and custom might be different and can cause weird issues.
on that note, is there any way to access that information after flashing the new rom (to see what apps i'm missing and download them all again so I don't have to just redownload each one as I realize i need it?) without restoring the backup
nevermind I ended up just going back to my old rom, thanks for the replies guys
There is this wonderful app called Titanium Backup, it backup all your wonderful apps. This way, when you switch ROMs, you can just restore all those wonderful apps that you have been stockpiling.
Hi, I'm new to the whole rooting your phone thing and installing a rom.
I've rooted my X10 phone successfully.
I've installed xRecovery.
I've backed up both apps and data using MyBackup Pro.
I've backed up both system and data using xRecovery.
I've cleared all cache and data using xRecovery.
I've installed Wolfbreak V6.
Can I recover my data (only) using xRecovery to my current Wolfbreak Rom without breaking everything?
Can I recover my data and apps using MyBackup Pro to my current Wolfbreak Rom without breaking everything?
I'd prefer not to have to go re-installing all my contacts, wifi settings and more without a real cause.
Thank you
Here's what I'd do if I were you:
1. Make a new backup of my freshly installed ROM in xRecovery.
2. Restore data from previous ROM through Advanced Restore in xRecovery.
3. Wipe dalvik cache in xRecovery.
4. Reboot
5. Keep an eye for anything "weird". In all cases, you'll have the backup from step 1, so no harm done.
Many people accuse the data restore for ROM shortcomings.
Truth is, a ROM means /system and data are in a completely different partition. So 90% of the time, you'll be just fine. As long as you restore data between the same kind of ROM stock-stock-stock based, MIUI-MIUI, CM-CM etc...

Thank you. I'll do as you've suggested. I thought that the data and system should be separate and compatible with a rom update. I did go the route of the stock flash so it should be okay.
Worked!
I did a xRecovery backup of my working updated ROM (once I fixed a small bug) just to be safe.
I used xRecovery advanced to restore my data from my original ROM.
everything feels and looks like before the wolfbreak ROM. I have all my phone numbers and text messages back, skins and apps!
and it works better too.
Wanting to switch between Turl and jokersax ICS builds.
Is titanium confirmed 100% working on ICS? i.e. I can do a full wipe data, format system, data, cache, dalvik, flash and then restore missing apps/system settings via titanium?
Or just restore individual apps (not system settings)?
Or is it safe to just wipe cache/dalvik and flash over?
Anyone that switches between the two, much appreciate your feedback.
Last time I did so I formatted everything for clean install, but I had just been running jokersax for less than a day so didnt care about restoring anything. However now I have turl setup nicely and don't want to have to bother redoing my homescreen, apps etc.
TiBu worked fine for me on both.
You should however never restore system settings after flashing a new ROM. Even though both CM9 versions are very similar, you do not know exactly what is all different, and may cause issues.
Better to just create a nandroid backup of each one and restore from those.
I have been reading all kinds of threads but still don't really understand what happens when a new or updated rom is installed.
My example is that I am currently running a basic root with alternative launchers and apps installed. My plan is to wait until cm9/3.x is available as a fully functional sd for dual boot.
When I install cm9 am I able to keep my installed and configuredapps or do I need to reinstall & reconfigure? How about look/feel custmization? Do I need to do something with titanium inorder to do that? Whatabout when updates to cm9 come after I have done my initial install/config?
Similarly, I read refs to clearing cache & dalvik. When exactly& how is that done?
if there are some threads with basics that coverthese topics please just point me to them.
thanks
New rom:
Backup apps via titanium backup.
Install rom. Install appropriate gapps package. Wipe data/cache.
Boot into rom. Install titanium backup and restore apps/data. The data restore of whatever your launcher is will restore your configuration.
Updating a rom:
Install rom. Install appropriate gapps package. No need to wipe data unless specified. If you have any issues, treat as a new rom and wipe data.
And as always, make a nandroid prior to flashing everything.

If I am switching ROMs of the same build, lets say CM10 7/23 build to a future unofficial CM10 build, would it be necessary to do a data wipe and factory reset?
Necessary? Probably not. A good idea? Probably yes.
Okay so similarly if I go to CM10 from another Rom wipe data and reset... but if I backup my with Titanium Backup what is recommended to be restored after flash? All system data + apps + app data, just apps and data or just apps. If I have contacts backed up to email etc, photos and such data stored elsewhere... would it be recommended to use the least amount of data restored from last install to the new Rom? I just donr want to load wrong values upon restoring my apps. I don't mind if app data or system data is factory reset but not if unnecessary and only if its not a prob and won't mess up any Ron specific settings.
