[Q] How to back up baseband - Motorola Photon 4G

Good afternoon gentlemen
i know this isnt a development thread, but, its a real important, novel, question about radio. and there isnt one thread on radios in dev (on most forums u can download radois and flash them)
I'm not sure if this is possible with the photon. But if you haven't read yet, lots of GSM users (like myself) are having problems after updating to later OTA's and SBFs
these problems include signal loss, no connection to UMTS networks etc..
these are new problems, back in the day i had 0 problems with signal
This is what i know so far:
the 154 SBF flashes the n01.28.05s base band
however i just nanroided back to a 154 build (forgot when) and i saw this baseband:
N_01.28.07R
I know the 198 SBF uses the above too, and i had this flashed before i nandroided so that explains it i suppose (nandroid doesnt touch baseband)
user 'robinrisk' has the same issue, however his radio is : N_01.21.07R
no idea how he got that one, but oddly enough i remember that being the baseband i had 0 issues with
so i need to know if theres a way he can back it up, so i can flash it via sbf o cwm?
is it possible?
and if neone else has a baseband that reads different then that let me know, especially if someone still has a STOCK photon with that hasnt been updated once, that would be key
THanks guys
Sam

GSM Problems: Help please.

Im having the most annoying problems with my photon
all used to work well, signal bars were great.
then one day i had a fail to boot message, so i flashed this SBF
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202666
And nothings been the same. It seems my radio/baseband is messed up
I have it set to GSM Only as usual
but every now and then it just loses signal ( i think when it switches towers) and wont come back till i reset it. and other times itll switch to 'Automatic' and think its a CDMA phone.
And the most annoying part is most of the time ill have 'signal' but little do i know no text messages are getting to me. and no phone calls. and if i try a phone call it hangs up a second in. These problems are all intermittent, itll suddenly just work after time, then stop after time. I thought it was my SIM Card but all is functional 100% in a different phone. I hope i dont have a sudden hardware problem in the phone itself.
I tried flashing to old SBFs, factory resetting nothing works
Ofcourse I skip the handset activation at the beginning as im in canada (GSM) and i cant seem to 'factory reset' the radio or use any of those codes because im in Canada and it asks for a passcode that i dont have
if ANYONE knows nething i can do pelase help, because its looking like i have to ditch the photon
I flashed my phone with that too, but no network problem after that.
I guess you have tried already to flash again. I'm also on gsm only.
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk
im thinking my phones radio is physically crapping out.. ah.
Perhaps that SBF borks GSM usage? Have you tried one of the very first SBF's that have been put out?
i tried 154_5, and 198_6, not sure if they are 'official', but both have this problem.
do u know of any other ones, or of some factory rom
id try those deblurred custom roms, but they have this wierd bug of not showing signal bars with GSM, aka no matter how good my signal is, the signal bar will always show 0 in those roms
I have been searching for crazy for the past week becuase i have had the same issue.
UMTS 3G radio stopped working, but i have not been able to find any 154 sbf files to flash.
I have to keep GSM mode only, and my battery life is terrible. Battery dies after 7 hours with NO usage. The only thing i have not tried, after flashing all kinds of software, is doing a nandroid backup on another Photon and flashing it on my phone. Will try it right now ad report back.
thats a good idea, especially if the nandroid u take is from a STOCK completely untouched Photon, i just wanna go back to how it was when i first got it
let me know how it works out! so we can upload it
i have the 154 sbf if u wanna try it:
http://www.multiupload.com/FNZKNV0T3G
ps: try flashing a rom from the dev section like that 'Home Base' one, i will try later
THANK YOU! I have been trying like crazy to find the 154 one. Im flashing the nandroid backup, but im doing it over the advanced settings, sine the /boot folder is giving me an error while checking "MD5 sums". It says error while flashing boot image. All other folders restore ok. I´ll post back.
ps. I´ve flashed HomeBase and Alien rom and apparently they do not touch the basebands.
considering that sbf that broke it for me is an official sprint update, it means sprint/motorola messed it up, knowingly or unknowingly, should we make it clear to them (to matt on those moto forums). not many users probably use gsm w sprint/photon so the problem isnt wide spread
i think the one that was working for me was soemthing even before 154, i cant remember if i updated my photon once, 194 is the third OTA right?
Im not very sure, but i work for Sprint, so i´ll check it out tomorrow and let you know.
Anyways, my friend with the Photon, the one i used for a nandroid backup does not have any issues connecting to 3G Gsm networks. It is very odd indeed.
[Edit] My friend´s Photon and mine do not have the same baseband version after the nandroid backup, so i guess it doesnt touch it. We need to figure out a way to get the sbf for the baseband,
whats ur baseband version?
ill check mine
if u work for sprint thats a bonus, dig around tomorrow!
my baseband is n_01.28.05s.fk i am currently doing an OTA update that has been ongoing for a week. im still only at 23%. so there may be a newer version.

Don't know if it helps at all, But I'm on CDMA and my baseband version is the same. n_01.28.05s.fk
I'm on GSM/UMTS in Italy and my baseband version is n_01.28.07R with update 45.3.6 and is ok

P500h - root+upgrade process.

I've got a Telecom NZ P500h phone here which Superboot would refuse to root as surprisingly it came with a late October release of 2.3.3 OOTB.
I had to use LGMDP to flash the old (December) 2.2.1 release of the same P500h firmware (from the thread in the dev forum), and I was then able to root it with Superboot.
I then had to use LGMDP again to flash the v20g baseband - this is the slightly dodgy bit as there doesn't seem to be a v20g baseband anywhere that is specifically for the P500h. I bit the bullet and flashed it anyway, and the phone now identifies as a standard P500. (Uh oh I thought).
Once I'd done that, I used the manual method to flash the current v3.06 ThunderG recovery, then rebooted into recovery and flashed the GingerLOL ROM.
Rebooted, and everything seems to work fine. WiFi works, 3G data works, calls work.
So, I'm not sure what difference the "h" designation implies, but unless I've yet to find something nasty, crossflashing it to a standard P500 seems to work just fine.
Now I'm about to flash it to the current AGA ROM instead as GingerLOL hasn't been updated in a long time. Not keen on CM7 as it seems to have too many issues.
So, if anyone else has a 500h phone, then you might be lucky and this process will work for you. If someone has gone through the same process and knows of issues I'm likely to come across as a result, please let me know!

[FIXED] Radio Flash: No Sim

I have a quick question because I've run into a problem I can't seem to fix.
First, so everyone knows what I'm dealing with:
Phone: i717
Changes: Rooted (Shows super user access), CWM v5.5.0.4, Unlocked (Tested)
Rom: Stock AT&T Rom
Sim Card: Works in a T-mo branded Exhibit II 4G.
I flashed a radio (tried KID, 0331122 from the radio thread in the dev section, and reflashed the original AT&T radio).Even w/ the original radio installed, it cannot seem my T-Mo sim now.
Do I need to flash a new Rom or what? Wipe data to factory reset?
I would rather not change anything w/o asking since flashing radios seems to be a straight forward thing that most ppl have done w/o touching the rom.
Thanks ahead of time.
Mine worked with a rooted stock rom at first it didnt see the sim then i tried searching the network under wireless and networks it took a few minutes but then it came up.

don't forget if you are running an ICS based ROM you need an ICS based Radio/modem.
EDIT: i see you're running the original GB rom so you need the GB radio.
give it a few minutes to find a signal or go to settings/mobile networks/network operators. choose manual. then let it search a few minutes. then select t-mobile.
I find the Blaze 4G radio worked best for me, but depending on your area, your results may differ. try em all.
You guys are insanely fast.
I'm currently on the stock radio & I'm still getting the same message after letting the sim sit in the phone for 9 minutes (yes, I watched the clock, lol):

Where should I go from here?
Edit: Is the answer flashing another rom? Maybe something has become corrupt? I don't see how as I've read & re-read walk thrus for doing this to make sure.
I've done a little more reading. Flashing the beta ICS rom flashes to the old AT&T modem.
Would this be the best bet?
Edit: After looking through the "about" phone...
I'm on 4.0.3
Baseband: Unknown............. that's really bad.
Edit 2:
After reading, I needed to back up the EFS. No where is this stated anywhere, unfortunately. That contains IMEI and everything else.
Edit:
So, after reading MORE, the IMEI number is on a sticker behind the battery, along w/ the S/N.
Huh? Efs? I dont even know what that is nevermind backing it up. Goto clockworkmod and flash the radio.zip and reboot. Thats all there is to it.

If you look up EMEI number related to flashing the radio, there's a lot of hits.
XDA has a thread on it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352371
I'm quite shocked it's not mentioned everywhere as this happens to people now and again.
I have my IMEI number, i just don't know how to input it into the phone.
As for flashing the radio, I've flashed 2, then back to the original. To no avail.
Sorry never had anything like that. I would almost odin back to stock and start over. You dont need root for the sim to work on calls and edge with tmobile.

If you're baseband is unknown don't worry just flash a stock at&t modem and it should go back to normal. Your imei is under a different menu in about phone..the status one.
Also its no ones responsibility to tell you that modifying your phone may break it.

I did flash back to the stock AT&T baseband as stated in the original post.
If I go to About Phone, the Baseband Version is unknown.
If I go to Status, the following are listed as
Network: Unknown
Mobile Network: Unknown
Service State: Out of service
Mobile Network State: Disconnected
IMEI: Unknown
IMEI SV: Unknown
I've backed up the EFS that I have no just so it doesn't degrade further. I'll try to flash again and see, but I still think the EFS is borked.
I'll see what I can, but I think I'll the EFS is borked beyond flashing it to normal.
My point about the EFS back up is that most ppl here don't seem to know what it is. It shouldn't be that foreign of a topic since flashing a radio is obviously problematic for some. I've seen other posts concerning no IMEI after flashing radios on forums other than XDA. It's odd that it's not mentioned as a sticky everywhere.
Backing up EFS would solve a lot of head aches from unlocking / radio flashing woes. I'm hoping this info will save a few people a lot of time and money.
After more digging, I came across this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646326
Synopsis: Basically, he followed the same guide I did. The only difference is that I flashed the radio while using a stock AT&T rom. Once he flashed back to GB (saurom), he gained back his baseband / IMEI.
This is what I cannot figure out:
CWM will see and flash any radio file I push to my note. If I push a stock AT&T rom, it won't see it. If I put the rom in it's own folder, it seems the rom, but states there's no files.
Is CWM corrupted? Why would it only read firmware to flash radios, but not android roms? Should I just go back and install CWM?
I've searched all over & used google, but I can't find a thread discussing this.
Fixed.
This problem has nothing to do with any of the radios corrupting the EFS folder. Albeit, it's always a good idea to back it up.
Flashing back to AT&Ts stock rom (2.3.6 or 4.0.3) never fix the issue. You will always be stuck w/o a radio, at least from what I've seen. Even flashing back to the stock radio fails. I don't know if it changes the EFS, but AT&T's rom does not like it and shows no IMEI & a bogus SN .
I had to go back, flash to saurom and a compatible GB (or beta T-mobile) radio to get te work fine. ICS radios work fine on ICS.
Saurom and GB radios dont work in my i 717 trying to connect to wind. I got a CM 9 ICS build and ive tired a bunch of radios. they all failed. i keep getting no sim errors. I can see the operator but when i select it it times out and says it cannot connect to the network at this time. it also says interset sim. Im positive it is unlocked.
Modems(radios) or basebands should have nothing to do with whatever rom you are running. Whether they are GB, ICS, or JB modems, they should all work to a degree, at least for phone call ability. I have flashed many different radios trying to get the best function of my att note on t-mo. The best I got was using the Blaze modem. That got me 3g hspa.
The worst will be just giving you edge speed. My note is unlocked and has been on JB running blaze ICS modem working fine. Maybe you need to start over, evaluate what you have, and go from there. There are great threads on att over t-mobile. Good luck.
I picked my rom, and started flashing 5 or 6 radios, and found what one worked best on t-mo.
Presently, I have switched back to att- sort of- straight talk. I'm not thrilled with the speeds. No higher than 4 mbps DL, and 1-1.5 UL. Thinking about going back to t-mo and dealing with the slow UL speeds. I'm on an ICS rom with the ucle6 modem.
Also, flashing a rom does not change your modem. You have to physically reflash the modem you want. Some modems show up as unknown under the baseband. Blaze is one of them.
Another thought- sometimes a reboot will get your sim recognized by your phone.

This is yet another case of the "no sim" bug ....
Damn I wish we could find the answer to this issue, but none exist .....and for some users the return to complete stock even fails to recover service ..

Really what an incredible unlucky glitch.I got my note for only 360CDN good condition but missing the stylus, even still it was a good buy. I'm on Wind mobile, T-mobile here in Canada. I even gave it to somebody who's done a bunch and they ran into the no sim problem. I guess I'll be going back to my HTC HD2 and sell the note .
---------- Post added at 11:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:44 PM ----------
So just to confirm I have followed the process correctly over 20 times and no matter which cm9 cm10 based rom and any ics or gb based radio will allow connection or recognize the sim to the 1700 aws network. With a cm9 based rom I can see my network, but it will not allow connection like the phone is locked, even though i have unlocked and tested the phone on other networks.
same here
Yes, I have the same 'No SIM' issue with a working WIND SIM. I've tried everything, multiple Radios, multiple ROMs. Very strange problem. I wish we had the tools that the SGSIII has for dumping and restoring the NV ram. Even stranger, I do have a the correct IMEI number in Phone, About. I have a feeling it's something to do with how the phones were carrier unlocked.

I have made a backup of the EFS folder with EFS Pro. I tried restoring the NV ram from .bak but there was none found.

It has nothing to do with your unlock. If you've followed the steps and are still having no sim issue you may have to get a new 32k sim card from wind the older ones won't connect in a phone with lte

Had to replace the TMo SIM card with a newer one today. Solved the problem of "No SIM".
I know this is old
I have the same problem with "NO SIM." One day i flashed so many things to my phone and one time i turned it on i got ATT on the top right corner and everything was good. I made some phone calls and texts and even browsed the web. I restarted the phone to check if it was just a fluke and it was. Ever since then i cannot get it to read my phone, but i know for sure the hardware works.

[Q] Radio problems (Vodafone NZ)

I run CM 10.1 on my phone, which had original specs: PDA:KG3 / PHONE:KE7 / CSC:KG1 (VNZ). I've been running those CM nightlies since about November 2012 with few problems, updating to new nightlies every few weeks to a month. I'd never flashed new radios - just the CM rom.
Starting a couple of months ago, I began to see a problem where my phone would drop cell service (no bars + empty triangle in the cell signal indicator) and rebooting was the only way to bring the cell signal back. This happened every couple of days, so was bearable. I figured something in the nightlies had caused a weird problem and that the CM devs/community would find and fix this.
After flashing a nightly last week, my phone wouldn't hold cell signal for more than an hour - sometimes not even that. Reboots fixed this but never permanently. I started to read about radios, modems, and RILs. hawkerpaul's post here was a great help. I found that my phone had the original KE7 radio but had a RIL of I9100XXLS8(2) - I presume from the CM rom? I flashed some new radios and have now gone through a series of the (matched) modem + RIL files in hawkerpaul's post above. In most cases I see the following behaviour:
Phone successfully finds network (Vodafone NZ) on boot
Trying to manually select a mobile operator fails (error when searching for networks)
Unable to successfully call out! Dialling stalls, and I can't hang up - only fixed by a reboot
How do I fix this immediate problem of not being able to call/receive calls? Seems like maybe I'm using a radio that doesn't work with Vodafone NZ - but I haven't seen any posts on what DOES work well with that network. I have the modem file to flash the original KE7 back again, but what should I do about the RIL file then? Not sure I have found an RIL for KE7 yet in my travels. Any help would be appreciated - and thanks!
To help me figure out where I went wrong, do the CM builds include the RIL, or is that something that could only get updated somewhere else? I know the rom doesn't change the modem but I suspect that XXLS8(2) RIL had to come from CM.
1) Don't mess with RIL's (You'll make it 'worse').
2) Check stock roms released by your telco. Find out which modems were bundled with those stock roms. Try those modems. If they don't help, look for stock roms released by other carriers which sold the the I9100T world-wide (check Samfirmware). Try the modems bundled with these roms. If they don't help, try any & every modem you can get your hands on.
If you've already flashed RIL's, you may well have created a bigger problem for yourself. You might want to do a clean install of stock as well for good measure if that's the case. The reason I stopped using CM9 (and never bothered with CM10) was similar issues that seem to have gotten introduced with a particular nightly & never went away (a fix was tried which benefited a very few problems who were having RIL problems but created problems for even more people who previously had no problems).

I'm just about at this point. If I reinstall stock, will that reset my modem as well?
Thanks for the help - looks like I did definitely make things worse.
You'll end up with whatever modem is bundled with the stock rom, so probably use the most recent released by your carrier, then you can try other modems released by your carrier as per my PP. The rationale with that is you'd hope your carrier has tested the modems they bundle with their stock roms so they work in most places/at most times with their network. Doing a clean install of stock should fix anything funky messing around with RIL's may have done as well.
If you get no joy from those, proceed as per my PP (You might get other suggestions from other people as well).
Thanks for the help. I was able to flash the latest stock rom, which included baseband I9100XXLS8. This worked fine for making and receiving calls. I lasted a couple of hours with that stock Samsung firmware before I started to get itchy for Android 4.2 again, so I've now rooted and am going to try CM10 again, but at least this time I know not to touch the modem - and I'm confident I can get back to stock again if I have any problems! Many thanks!
Glad you've got connectivity back You can flash modems as much as you want, I'd just be wary of messing with RIL's unless it's as an absolute last resort (I.E you have no connectivity & you've tried every single modem. Too many people try them when their connectivity is fine in the mistaken belief they're going to get 8Mbps instead of 7.8Mbps downloads, I.E it wasn't broke in the first place), even then a clean install of stock & choosing the right modem will often fix the problems.
You're welcome Any dramas post to this thread again & I'm sure someone will help.

Hi and thanks in advance. I have a galaxy i9100 which shows the following information: PDA: i9100xwlsd - Phone i9100xxls8 - Csc i9100vnzls9. I installed via odin Android version 4.1.2 which made the phone work really well except that it kept dropping network service and signal strength. I replaced the sim which did seem to help but did not fix the problem totally. I also notice that the GPS will not find any satellites and just keeps searching for as long as I would let it. I have read various threads and it appears that this may be a modem problem? I have found that Vodafone NZ has released a modem which is i9100xxls9? Should I flash the modem file only in Odin and do you really think this would fix the problem. How would I flash the modem file. Would I do this through odin? Any help gratefully received.
Yes, first step is definitely to flash the modem which was released by your carrier for your region. If you can find a file which is Odin flashable then yes, try it. However most of the files are for flashing via CWM. Are you rooted? If not they won't work for you, in which case you'll have to search around for an Odin flashable version of LS9.
Just to check, you do have an i9100? Not an i9100t etc? Some variants require different modems.

Thanks again

Thanks for the response. How do I know if a file is odin flashable? How do you flash via cwm (whatever that is). You can see I am a little bit or a lot of a novice on this. The unfortunate thing is I enjoy it. I think the phone is rooted and it says the phone is: Model GT- i9100. The phone was purchased in UAE and I have flashed the android 4.1.2 which was a vodafone NZ system. Everything works fine except the GPS and the phone signal drops out all the time showing no service when there is service? Thanks again for your help on this. I have just found that the phone may not be rooted? I tried to install root manager but it indicated phone was not rooted?
Ok so no offence, you need to do a lot of reading for yourself. Reading is the key to successful (ie without bricking) modification of your phone.
For a start, if you've flashed stock then of course you will not have root. You don't need to have root to flash a modem. Have a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1656005
I'm not saying to flash that modem file. But that's how you do it, now you just need to find your file and flash it.

flash stock rom download it from sammobile
Back to 'original condition' ? Get a stock rom for country/carrier from Samfirmware, flash with Odin following instructions in thread stickied near top of Q&A titled 'Flash Stock firmware'. Problems with getting a successful flash ? Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General has all the info you need in order to get a successful flash if you do get stuck.
I did admit I dont really know what i am doing, I am sorry for that!
Im looking on sammobile, but cant find a matching pda?
My Baseband version is I9100XXMS2
Forget basebands & forget 'matching' anything; irrelevant/unnecessary. Download any stock rom for your carrier (not 4.0.4 if you intend to root your phone again at any stage though), flash it as per my PP.

But I'm still having the same issue which made me want to go back to a stock ROM. Problem is I can't make or receive calls or send or receive texts, but i can still use the internet which is really odd, I've tried everything, had my Sim card replaced with a new 1, factory reset, gone through all the settings but cant figure this out, any ideas please?
If you mean you've gone back to stock & are still having connectivity issues - try flashing different modems ? Plenty can be found by searching, maybe specifically look for threads where people using the same carrier as you have mentioned particular modems which have given them good connectivity. You're going to find this easiest if your phone is rooted given most of the easily found modems are CWM flashable, so if you haven't re-rooted your phone already, you should do that first to make life easy for yourself (I hope you didn't flash a 4.0.4 stock rom as per my warning ?).
You could also try flashing other stock roms for your carrier/country which will have different modems bundled which may give you better connectivity. If after trying a bunch (and I mean a bunch - 20 or more, not 5 or 6) of modems, I'd then try flashing the 3 part stock firmware in Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General (which will wipe your phone), then reflashing a stock rom for your carrier again after & see if that helps. If you're still having problems after all that, it's either a hardware problem or a carrier-side issue.
If you mean you went back to stock, had no problems, then re-flashed whatever rom/kernel you were using & the problems persisted, I'd be asking in the rom/kernel thread given it's obviously a rom/kernel issue.

Well thanks for all your help, will continue to READ threads and try a bunch! of modems etc... and let you know how i get on, Sorry for startin a new thread about this issue.
The issue started one day out of the blue, after having flashed a dorimanx kernel all was well untill 1 day just couldnt make or recieve calls or texts, decided to go back to stock rom to see if it would fix problem but hasn't, so am on the case to find a solution
Yeah it's a pain in the arse when all of a sudden you get connectivity issues for no apparent reason. Used to happen to me when I used CM (not recently mind you, I'm talking CM9). Unfortunately, given what you've already tried, you're stuck with mucking around with modems & hopefully you hit upon one that gives you decent connectivity back.
Even though they'll probably tell you everything's fine, I'd be contacting my carrier (assuming I had a spare hour to sit on hold) as well & just check there's nothing carrier-side that may be causing it, which is probably unlikely, but still possible given the way this issue popped up 'all of a sudden'.
Re: starting a new thread, all good. You described exactly what problem you had from the get go & mentioned that you were using a custom kernel, which is a damn sight better than having to ask 20 questions to extract the info one needs out of people in order to start helping them

Well i have been trying different modems... but just the same issue, I get Data but cant make calls or texts or receive. The phone basically isn't recognizing my telephone number when i look in phone status says unknown.... Is there anything else that may be causing this?
Worked out the issue with the phone number not showing, thats sorted and not in relation to the issue. on 4.1.2 btw. Still no calls or txts coming through just beeps when trying to make a call and cust out. It dosnt seem as though anyone has any idea atall? I have been flashing different modems over and over (all different ones) all they seem to do is altar data connection soem are good some not so good ill post my opinions about modems later.
Just this connectivity issue I've basically just got a small samsung tablet! Not a phone....
