Modem work differently on different roms? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My first rom i flashed was stock deodexed 2.3.5 KI3. I found the BOKG1 modem worked best for me even at work with poor reception i managed to get H. Now i am using KI8 and it seems my signal isn't so good any more...could the modems work differently on different roms? I thought they communicated more with the hardware so didn't think the software would have any effect?

You can mix and match modems and roms, some modems will be worse in your area/network.

Have you still got the Rom you previously flashed?
If so extract the modem.bin from the Rom and flash it to your device using Odin.
There is a modem thread but not sure if the modem you want is available for download.

I had better data connection and so on with KI4 modem on GingerMOD 0.5 (KI4 firmware, android 2.3.4)
But with GingerMod 0.6 (KI3 firmware, android 2.3.5), KI3 modem is working better.

They are only set up for CM7 at this time. I am not on a samsung based rom so not sure what I would need to change in the updater-script so it can flash for stock based roms. But at least it gives us a updater script so whenever we get new modems it should be easy to flash and test them out with just dropping the newer modem into it and then rezipping it up.
So far I tested the Newer leaked UCKJ4 and sound quality sounds good and for my area it actually increased my download speed. At my house on JH7 I only get about 2-3Mb down and at work I get about 8Mbs down.
With UCKJ4 I just got 6+ at home so it is definetely better for my area. Upload speeds were about the same with 1+/-Mb. Again these are all based off of ATT modems so I am not expecting much spleen differences with them. Comparing to the differences in speed we had on the captivate running i9100 roms.

I think you misunderstood my question. I was asking if the updater script would flash on a stock rom or i9100 rom as is. Moot point now as I just repacked hellraiser with the new modem and it flashed just fine.

Try going into cwm and first wipe dalvich cache. Then flash the zip.
CWM, scroll down to ADVANCED, wipe dalvich cache, go back, install zip from sdcard. Hope this helps.
If not maybe it is because nightlies have newer kernels than the stable release?
I tried out both of them and had no issues. Glad it is working for others.

Also I THINK the i9100's will not work for us. I made quite a few to test out. I could get good signal and good download speeds, BUT when I called my voicemail I had no sound. Tried on multiple i9100 modems... bummer...

No need for a USB cable. Just download it to your phone, move it to the sdcard, reboot into recovery, wipe dalvich cache, choose the zip to install it.

[Q] GB XXWLA4 Modem in a ICS XXLPH rom

I've read here that a person is not locked into matching a Modem version to the Kernel version used and there may benefits in stability and battery life by using a different modem. That being said, Can a person use a GB 2.3.6 modem in a ICS XXLPH build?
The reason I'm asking is using a XXWLA4 Kernel with matching Modem and Multi CSC works for sending and receiving MMS through SMS when MMS fails on any and all ICS builds I've tried. Got to be something different in the Modem or CSC maybe?
There are a few things you should understand before flashing anything experimental.
Kernels are Android version dependent. Some can run on multiple version of GB, but you should check the release notes on a case by case basis. A GB kernel WILL NOT RUN properly on ANY ICS build, so do not go experimenting with kernels.
MODEMs on the other hand are software independent and you can run any modem with any Android version and experiment to find the best version for yourself.
I was aware about the kernels being android version dependent in order to be compatible and cannot be mixed. I did read about being able to mix or match modems without problem within different roms. What I could not find is any thing confirming that one could or could not use a GB modem within ICS.
I've been having trouble sending or receiving MMS in any Rom build I've tried other than stock kernels from sammobile. I figure its got to be something different either in the modem or CSC. I've been using only the MultiCSC packages when available as separate files. I wondered if trying a different modem, from a version that I know that works would help determine the cause being the CSC or the Modem.
Ive been using my i9100t modem from gb on ics lph thats the only way i get good reception.so yes u can.

[Q] About the baseband version and custom rom

Hi,
Im kinda new in the android section and need some help.
I have done CWM and Root via ODIN.
Now I want to install a custom rom. Rom that I want to install says XXALF6.
I checked my baseband and it says XXLE8 and Build : i9300XXALE8
So what do I have to do?
Just proceed and install it or do I have to do something else before I go on with it.
Many thanks.
You can just install the rom the baseband and firmware share version numbers I believe.

Thanks for your answer i just installed a custom rom. It works perfect.
My other question is now my baseband, firmware version changed does this affect my mobile data or any ways of my 3G connection like phonecalls, messages etc?
Baseband is not firmware its the Modem .
Different modems can be flashed from the modem thread .
jje
Thx for the answer, so I didnt flashed the modem? It's only the rom?
Yep,most of the custom roms do not contain another modem, you have to flash it via odin individually,or via cwm,if it is downloaded as a cwm flashable zip

Modems are unrelated to the Rom itself, so you can flash any you like.
The modems have vast differences in terms of network stabiliy and data throughput.
Many people, including me, have the best performance on asian big-city-modems (with S1,S2,S3) but in the end you'll have to try for yourself.
On S3 I've so far had the best experience with ZNLF2.
However you'll have to note that better signal/data throughput always means worse 3g battery life since it needs more power for the transmission.

Change baseband on JB AOKP ROM?

Hi,
I installed a custom ROM AOKP build (the thread for which has either been deleted or I'm failing at finding it). The ROM is generally good, except for batter life. I was on GB checkrom v6 before this, and had the same problem. On that ROM, I used the kitchen app to update the baseband which vastly improved my battery life, and I'd like to the same on JB, but as that app only worked with checkrom, I don't know how to go about it.
Can anyone tell me if I can use any baseband I like with the JB ROM, where I can get different basebands from (I think the one that worked well was KI1 or KI4, the XEU ones for UK/Europe), and how to install them?
Many thanks.

Yes, you can flash any modem, so far it's for galaxy SII, GT I9100.
There it's nothing like gingerbread, ICS, jellybean, AOKP or Aosp baseband/modem
The only modem we have is galaxy SII modem and they are compatible written our phone irrespective of the Rom/Android version
How to flash a new modem:
Download the best modem for your region here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
-boot to CWM recovery
-flash the modem zip file you downloaded
-reboot phone
Done
Note: Baseband is also called modem
Swyped from my Galaxy SII
Excellent. Thanks very much, I'll give it a try!

[Q] cell phone reception

Hi,
I have looked all over this forum. I found the thread for the variety of modems/radios. I have a Galaxy S2 SGH i777. I rooted it and installed debloated UCMD8. It had ICS 4.0.4. The wifi signal reception is fine on both ROMS, but the cellphone reception IS TERRIBLE!!!
Does anyone have an opinion about this?
Thanks
Many people have reported good results with the UCMD8 modem, even in other firmware. However, different modems work well in different areas. You just have to experiment with all the modems to see which one works best for you. You can actually install any modem in that post with your current firmware, but you need to be rooted and have a custom kernel containing ClockworkMod Recovery.
If you're not rooted, you can use framaroot to root, and then use Mobile Odin Lite or Mobile Odin Pro to install the AJK kernel that is made for 4.1.2 stock. After that you can flash modems in recovery quite easily. I have all the modem zips on my sdcard so that if I want to change at any time, I can.
There r two ucmd8 modems available on xda one by creepyncrawly 4.70 mb and one by mr cook 4.75 mb. Any difference in both.
Secondly my wifi worked too good with ucmd8 but cell reception poor and with ucle5 wifi poor and cell reception good. Any idea
