[Q] About the baseband version and custom rom - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Im kinda new in the android section and need some help.
I have done CWM and Root via ODIN.
Now I want to install a custom rom. Rom that I want to install says XXALF6.
I checked my baseband and it says XXLE8 and Build : i9300XXALE8
So what do I have to do?
Just proceed and install it or do I have to do something else before I go on with it.
Many thanks.

You can just install the rom the baseband and firmware share version numbers I believe.

Thanks for your answer i just installed a custom rom. It works perfect.
My other question is now my baseband, firmware version changed does this affect my mobile data or any ways of my 3G connection like phonecalls, messages etc?

Baseband is not firmware its the Modem .
Different modems can be flashed from the modem thread .

Thx for the answer, so I didnt flashed the modem? It's only the rom?

Yep,most of the custom roms do not contain another modem, you have to flash it via odin individually,or via cwm,if it is downloaded as a cwm flashable zip

Modems are unrelated to the Rom itself, so you can flash any you like.
The modems have vast differences in terms of network stabiliy and data throughput.
Many people, including me, have the best performance on asian big-city-modems (with S1,S2,S3) but in the end you'll have to try for yourself.
On S3 I've so far had the best experience with ZNLF2.
However you'll have to note that better signal/data throughput always means worse 3g battery life since it needs more power for the transmission.

Modem work differently on different roms?

My first rom i flashed was stock deodexed 2.3.5 KI3. I found the BOKG1 modem worked best for me even at work with poor reception i managed to get H. Now i am using KI8 and it seems my signal isn't so good any more...could the modems work differently on different roms? I thought they communicated more with the hardware so didn't think the software would have any effect?
You can mix and match modems and roms, some modems will be worse in your area/network.

Have you still got the Rom you previously flashed?
If so extract the modem.bin from the Rom and flash it to your device using Odin.
There is a modem thread but not sure if the modem you want is available for download.

I had better data connection and so on with KI4 modem on GingerMOD 0.5 (KI4 firmware, android 2.3.4)
But with GingerMod 0.6 (KI3 firmware, android 2.3.5), KI3 modem is working better.

Custom ROM without baseband flashing

Is there any custom ROM available which doesn't require baseband flashing....

The only reason not to flash to the new baseband with Gingerbread (2.3) is if your carrier uses HSDPA in the 1700Mhz band (T-Mobile in the US, for example).
In that case, I recommend sticking with the stock rom (or a custom one that includes the LG framework, at least), modifying it yourself (flashing a new kernel alone will make it feel like a new phone), and retain the features found only in the LG framework (the LG camera app is tremendously better than any of the available alternatives). Or, if you don't mind losing most of the camera's features, you can upgrade to a version of Gingerbread that supports the old baseband (I recommend Adfad666's A-Series or F-Series rom with fserv's modified version of the francokernel).
Otherwise, it would be advisable to take the leap and enjoy the enhancements of the new baseband (most notably, users are reporting a stronger overall signal).
Keep in mind that in the future, most rom developers will probably be shifting strictly to the new baseband. So, if you switch now, you'll be prepared for any future rom updates.

[Q] GB XXWLA4 Modem in a ICS XXLPH rom

I've read here that a person is not locked into matching a Modem version to the Kernel version used and there may benefits in stability and battery life by using a different modem. That being said, Can a person use a GB 2.3.6 modem in a ICS XXLPH build?
The reason I'm asking is using a XXWLA4 Kernel with matching Modem and Multi CSC works for sending and receiving MMS through SMS when MMS fails on any and all ICS builds I've tried. Got to be something different in the Modem or CSC maybe?
There are a few things you should understand before flashing anything experimental.
Kernels are Android version dependent. Some can run on multiple version of GB, but you should check the release notes on a case by case basis. A GB kernel WILL NOT RUN properly on ANY ICS build, so do not go experimenting with kernels.
MODEMs on the other hand are software independent and you can run any modem with any Android version and experiment to find the best version for yourself.
I was aware about the kernels being android version dependent in order to be compatible and cannot be mixed. I did read about being able to mix or match modems without problem within different roms. What I could not find is any thing confirming that one could or could not use a GB modem within ICS.
I've been having trouble sending or receiving MMS in any Rom build I've tried other than stock kernels from sammobile. I figure its got to be something different either in the modem or CSC. I've been using only the MultiCSC packages when available as separate files. I wondered if trying a different modem, from a version that I know that works would help determine the cause being the CSC or the Modem.
Ive been using my i9100t modem from gb on ics lph thats the only way i get good reception.so yes u can.

flashing a modem thro CWM recovery in no way harm ur phone, so please try a cpl of modem and see the one that wrks well for u.
u can even try the one that was there earlier before flashing v2.6 rr rom and see
link for modem zip file below
Modem Collection
Modems can be flashed in recovery mode easily. Search in this forum and theres a thread dedicated to I9100 modems with lots to choose from. Each user has their own preferred modem so its down to flashing and observing any improvements in signal and data strength.

how do i know which moddem to choose ?
and how do i install it ?
THANKS !
Read thread see if any users from your region recommend a particular modem. Or just flash a selection and use a signal strength monitor app to find best for your area. Takes a while but well worth it

First try wipe cache also, from stock recovery

Hi, Baseband Version Question Here.

Ive got a Samsung galaxy tab which has a reference band base version P7500UBKL1
While searching for a custom rom I ran across different versions of the tablet XXLQ8 or XWLP5 or UELPL
My main question is, Could i flash any of these roms and have it working?
If i do flash one of these would i loose the ability to use 3g? or would it just brick it? thank you for the support.
baseband works different for different tabs it is always better to not flash the modems .....if u want u can flash different modems without flashing roms .......some baseband will provide u better connectivity(signals) and some will provide lesser signals and some will use less battery and some modems use more battery ......if u don't want to mess with it just leave as it is .....or else go ahead and play with it
CHEERS
HIT THANKS BUTTON IF I HAVE HELPED
Wou have asked the same question in other section, too. Look there to see my answer...

You can and easily flash modem which you want. You can find here tested modems on Galaxy Tab 10.1 P7500.
