The only reason not to flash to the new baseband with Gingerbread (2.3) is if your carrier uses HSDPA in the 1700Mhz band (T-Mobile in the US, for example).
In that case, I recommend sticking with the stock rom (or a custom one that includes the LG framework, at least), modifying it yourself (flashing a new kernel alone will make it feel like a new phone), and retain the features found only in the LG framework (the LG camera app is tremendously better than any of the available alternatives). Or, if you don't mind losing most of the camera's features, you can upgrade to a version of Gingerbread that supports the old baseband (I recommend Adfad666's A-Series or F-Series rom with fserv's modified version of the francokernel).
Otherwise, it would be advisable to take the leap and enjoy the enhancements of the new baseband (most notably, users are reporting a stronger overall signal).
Keep in mind that in the future, most rom developers will probably be shifting strictly to the new baseband. So, if you switch now, you'll be prepared for any future rom updates.

[Q] Baseband Question

currently I am on Mik_os's 2.3.4 CM7 rom with a baseband of v07u, my question: which baseband would I need to flash ? Also with flashing these basebands, what if I were to go back to froyo roms ie...devoid froyo final, void delta, or megatron ? Would I get stuck in boot loops or even worse take a chance at bricking my phone ? I get the whole concept that the reason to flash the new baseband is some GSM will work on offical GB roms.
mik_os's CM7 is still on version 10e baseband, therefore, it is *technically* a froyo based rom just rebuilt to BE gingerbread without the baseband.
So in that, it uses the old baseband. Same as froyo.
The only roms that require the new baseband are roms based off the new 2.3.3 released from LG.
you're welcome

I appreciate the help, but that didnt necessarily answer the question I was looking for was....with flashing the new baseband(s), which one is compatiable with all roms ? Say I wanted to right now flash to an official 2.3.x rom, than a few weeks later wanted to go back to roms like megatron, devoid froyo final,mik_os's cm7 ? I know I would have to flash the new baseband for the new roms but what would I do to have a working phone for the "technically based froyo" roms ?

You should get the old baseband to have #technically froyo based roms. This can be done by,
1. Flashing entire older official version rom (i.e.10a, b..) via KDZ or LGMDP.exe.
2. Easier? Just flash only baseband via LGMDP.

The new official LG firmware (Android 2.3.3 - Gingerbread) has a different baseband than Froyo had (2.2.*). So any ROM based on official GB binaries, needs this new baseband. So, if u go from one custom ROM that needs the old baseband to the one that needs the new one (or the other way around) you NEED to change it so that GSM and data can work!
I can't say which one is better, but Mik_os doesn't support the new one in his ROM (CM7 port)... Hmm?

Baseband and other questions

I just have a few questions about the process.
1. Once i do get this new baseband, how do i revert to the baseband I'm currently using. I've used everything from openoptimus to megatron to devoid final to void to cyanogenmatt to mik_os cm7 and have never changed the baseband.
2. What is the best rom available as far as performance, stability, and battery are concerned. I'm not exactly a newb but I'm not an advanced user either.

2. i highly recommend using the rom in my signature. its stable and its good performance-wise. as for battery life, it depends on your kernel

You should read this before asking such questions.
I appreciate the help but to be more specific. I see there are two baseband types. One for official GB and the other for all roms. My question is say i want to flash the new openoptimus 2.3.3 i know id use the first baseband but than id want to use say mik_os cm7 or megatron etc.... id use the other baseband. Would i have to flash the basebands each time i want to use a different rom

i would personally stick with roms that require the old baseband. switching roms is already a hassle, but to switch basebands...not only is that time consuming but you also risk bricking your phone. the majority of the roms here use the old baseband so i would recommend sticking with the old baseband
but to answer your question, yes you would have to flash the baseband each time you switch to another rom that requires the other baseband
2. try AGA rom.
Sweet, thank you. That's what i figured but the custom roms look so appealing when they already have so many tweaks ie..loopy snoothness, lqlite.so

Is there any way we can have new baseband on our CM and ASOP rms for lgp500...Waiting for one ...
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that, from what I've read baseband the new baseband will come packaged with these roms. Its a hassle flashing baseband, something I've never done, would like to try out criscco, aga and other GB official roms. I've sticked with the likes of Mik_os 6.5.7/6.6.1 roms, megatron, devoid final/echo/void. I've read from around these forums having GB roms aren't even worth the time flashing these basebands

If you don't know anything about baseband (and have never messed with it) you probably have the old baseband

Oh thank you.. and is the rom and kernal you are using for your phone good?
i think it is one of the best roms out there performance wise. the only reason why i would not recommend it is because of the minor bugs it has (which i believe will be fixed this weekend)
if you take a look at it and find that you do not like it, you should try mik's port of cyanogenmod7 here (which is also good performance wise)

Switching Baseband - The easy way [ Tested on GB ]

Mod plz add this to sticky or link it in sticky
As we know there are two types of baseband's available for our device, old baseband which is used by froyo and some gingerbread rom's and new baseband that is used by gingerbread onwards.
To switch baseband you either need to flash baseband through lgmdp or flash firmware using kdz and both involves a substantial degree of risk of bricking your device.
What I will be telling will not actually change your baseband but will make the ROM compatible with the baseband you are using. So here it is how it goes.
-> If you are having old baseband and want to use new baseband ROM, flash this after flashing ROM

-> If you are having new baseband and want to use old baseband ROM, flash this after flashing ROM

Note:- Patch for old baseband was originally made by adfadd and thats where idea came for creating a patch for new baseband. While the patch by adfadd is long lost in pile of threads, this is where this thread will come handy.
Flashing baseband through LGMDP cannot brick your device, only flashing full firmwares via LGMDp or KDZ_FW_UPD can have chance to brick

Manual search fix
Here is the libril.so for manual search fix. My friend tested it on new baseband and it works.
So, probably for all new basebands including funnysim may work for gingerbread, ics and jellybean. Please test it on and report.
Good job.

i looked into the zip file and found that a few lib files are added by flashing the patch. would this affect the performance? my phone works fine in 90% of the time. however, sometimes it is just too laggy to even answer calls. it could become normal after some time, say 30s ro 1min.
i dont have this problem when i was using roms based on the old baseband. so i am wondering what would the patch do to the system.
thanks.

those libs aren't going to affect performance in any way... its the ROM & kernel that affects performance.
