[Q] Anyway to complete remove Vlingo? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

You know when you double tap the home button you get the voice search powered by vlingo.. is there anyway to completely remove it and disable the keymap for it?
Because i cannot use the quickdesk app at all. You can either press home once to enable the app (works) or double tap it (Blasted voice search always comes up first so i can not use it). i prefer opening the app by double click as i want the single click for home..
i have a rooted phone and used root uninstaller to remove the app but with the app removed doubling clicking brought up nothing, not even quickdesk or vlingo so im thinking it is mapped in.. :/
anyone?

You can freeze it with Titanium Backup.

yeah i have tried freezing it but then when i double click nothing comes up... its sort of like the phone has permanently mapped the double tap to only open vlingo and nothing else

look in the apps section for homemyhome it will allow to set up what ever application you want to open with a double click.

It's in one of the forums here. It works very well. Just do search on "homemyhome"

In Jkay's "Deluxe Settings" app (search xda) there is an option where you can unckeck "home button double click". After that Iwas able to use quickdesk as I love it. Now, read the jkay thread since I don't know exactly what you have to do to get it to work since for me the app came preloaded with a custom ROM I flashed.
EDIT: Ok, I did you a favour: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154278
THere you'll find all the guide you need to install it. OF course you'll have to have root and CWM installed. This is because you need a theme with jkay support for the app to work.
EDIT2: I found the thread for the app that Cosmic Blue recommended. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299923
It's way simpler than my method for just the home buton thing.

Thanks a lot for finding the thread!! but when I install homemyhome it just says application not installed with a tick next to it.
Also it said get rid of voicetogo.apk but I dont even have that yet my vlingo voice works :/
I am rooted btw stock rom

I'm also running a rooted Stock rom as well.
Disclaimer: I have just enabled root today and and it's been a fun ride. While I'm new, the info below is verified by me to get a result on the SGS2 International version I own.
I has success with removing VoiceToGo.apk and substituting it with Google Voice Dialler. Perhaps you could look through the steps below and see if you might have missed something?
Troubleshooting:
Have you restarted your phone? (probably an unnecessary question, but I generally do it to be safe)
Have you double-checked /system/app/ to verify VoiceToGo.apk is still present in that directory? If you can still run Vlingo, then this app is probably still in that directory.
Workflow:
I also followed the instructions in the post tomascunill linked (had to read the instructions a couple of times to ensure I understood them).
I used CWM to do a full device backup before doing this just in case I needed /system/app/VoiceToGo.apk again.
I fully deleted VoiceToGo.apk with the free version of Titanium Backup app from the Play Store.
I connected the phone while in normal mode (not download mode) to my Linux laptop and used adb from the Android SDK to take it from there.
adb commands I used were:
To verify adb saw my device (which it didn't initially because I had the phone in download mode), I ran:
Code:
[downloads]$ adb devices
List of devices attached
304D19E8516BED9E device
To make adb remount my file root file system, I ran:
Code:
[downloads]$ adb remount
To push the VoiceDialer.apk to the correct location I executed:
Code:
[downloads]$ adb push VoiceDialer.apk /system/app/VoiceToGo.apk
I then restarted the phone and all was good.
My son was double-tapping that button and starting Vlingo ALL THE TIME. But now I can control that. The great thing is that Google Voice Dialler doesn't launch while on the lock screen (my son isn't quite that smart to unlock the phone)
Hope this helps you work out what's happening.

[APP] NookColor Tools - Access hidden settings

greetings, nookies
i just threw together this app for the NookColor. it gives you access to hidden system settings, and allows you to select soft keyboards that are installed.
it's super basic and ugly right now, but i hope it will come in handy. i plan to expand and refine it as time goes on.
when you click the All Settings button, you'll see a list of all the available preference panels. note that some of them don't work. not sure why.
some highlights:
- Development > Auto Mount - turn off usb auto mount
- Development > Manage Applications - uninstall apps, clear defaults
- Battery Use
- SD Card and Phone Storage - shows available space in internal storage
- Testing > Battery Info - status, voltage, temp, etc
- Testing > Battery History
- Testing > Usage statistics
if you find yourself on a screen without a back button, remember that you can swipe left over the notification bar at the bottom, if it's showing.
for info on installing other keyboards, see this thread. basically, you need to copy your keyboard's apk to /system/app and reboot. if you haven't done this before, here's a howto.
new! to enable the non-market apps checkbox, you need to copy this apk to /system/app. if you have 0.1 installed, uninstall it first, then copy 0.2 to /system/app and reboot. this is necessary for the app to have the right permissions to modify secure system settings. the app will still work if you install it the normal way, but you won't be able to use the non-market apps checkbox.
as usual, i accept no responsibility if this messes up your device. use at your own risk.
changelog:
0.2 - added install non-market apps option. apk must be in /system/app to enable this feature. filtered some unusable settings screens out. added some descriptions for the buttons.

Thanks!
Hey, thanks a bunch
keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! Unfortunately it didn't help my keyboard problem because the only keyboard that showed up was "To enable it (the Scandinavian keyboard) go to Settings - Language & keyboard. There you need to check Scandinavian keyboard if it's not checked". So I'm guessin that it's not checked and that the specific settings file (I guess it's like a control panel app in Windows) isn't even there on a Nook. Or is it just not activated that easily?
If I try to launch the keyboard i get "Activity not found". Any idea if there is another setting to activate the keyboard for use?
Very nice work.

hold off on installing this app by copying it to /system/app. it seems this might cause your NC to do a factory reset when using any of the bn apps like the library. more info to come when i get a chance to investigate. until then, you can install 0.2 as a normal app.
Ben74, this app is excellent!
Also, I noticed that when NC freaks out and wipes to factory settings, it does not wipe /system. Does this mean that, in principle, your app will allow to keep root (with the Development menu settings)?
Thanks again!

are you saying that you also got a factory reset after installing NookColor Tools to /system/app? after the reset, did you still have root? i did a full reflash of /system and /data after that happened to me, so i don't know.

No, I am not saying that at all.
I am saying that in my unrelated tinkering, I have had wipes that always end up keeping the /system intact. (I suppose they were not of the full-reset-"factory.zip" variety.)
I was simply guessing that if that were the case and your apk survived the "soft" wipe (as I have seen with other apks), then following the ordeal, the NC would still be rooted ... Maybe ...
That would be a cool possibility, no? Not having to go through the initial rooting procedure.

Aha, after reading this post, I understand the context of your question better.
Here is my case: I had done a bunch of work and had NookColor Tools installed as a regular app. After performing some action that involved invoking the NC Home app, I got a message that the Nook encountered some error and will now undergo a factory reset. After the reset, I had to reroot, of course.
The bottomline, in my case, with respect to this discussion, is that the wipe-causing problem occurred while NookColor Tools was not in /system/app folder.
At the moment, I reinstalled everything and this time I put NookColor Tools in /system/app.
Will keep an eye out for interesting developments ...
I see. The factory reset that happened on my NC was the type that only wipes /data. I'm not sure if root would be retained or not. I'm also not certain that the reset I got was related to my app. Has anyone else who installed it to /system/app experienced a reset?
Sent from my NookColor using the XDA app
Ok, thanks for the info. So it seems possible that the reset was due to something else. Has anyone else experienced a reset?
Sent from my NookColor using the XDA app
I've experienced one of these, but before I'd ever installed your app. It was right after I had tried to install the Market/Gmail fix as described by Mister Muffin. Something about an authentication problem, and then, we're going to reset ... no yes/no option, just went ahead and did it.
ok, it looks like the reset i had was probably caused by something else. i have installed NookColor Tools to my /system/app, and haven't gotten another reset so far. please let me know if anyone has any problems when installing NookColor Tools to /system/app.

[DELETED LG HOME APP ?] Recovery guide.

Hi,
Recently, I accidentally deleted my LG HOME app from my Optimus One (my phone was rooted). But since I was using GO Launcher Pro at the time, it didn't affect the phone functionality.
But then while playing with the phone I factory reset it, and whoosh ! I was left with no launcher screen at all (LG HOME being the default, which I deleted ). I was left with a blank screen, with just the notification bar.
HERE IS HOW I RECOVERED MY PHONE (and not the LG HOME app):
Step 1: Get a launcher app apk from somewhere and copy it to your SD card.
PS: Search on google 'go launcher ex apk' without the quotes. You can also search for ADW launcher or others (see android market).
Step 2: Turn your phone on.
Step 3: Get someone to call on your phone. Pick up the call.
Step 4: During the call tap the 'Add call button'. You will get the dialer pad, with contacts, call logs and favorites tabs as well.
Step 5: Go to contacts and click the menu hardkey to get the menu. Tap 'New Contact'.
Step 6: When you get the new contact form, tap the image with a '+' sign on it (It is used to add a contact image).
Step 7: Now you will get options as to where to get the file. Select OI File Manager.
Step 8: Navigate to the folder in which you copied the Launcher app (Go launcher, ADW Launcher or the like) and install it.
Voila ! You have a new launcher screen now.
PS : I was relieved when I finally got my launcher back. I was on the brink of flashing my phone to the stock KDW, which could've resulted in a bigger mess (Bricking etc.)
NOTE 1: If you factory reset your phone again, you will lose the launcher again, and will be back without a launcher screen. So make sure you don't do so lest you want to repeat Step 1 thru 8 again.
Word of advice: Make sure you have at least one launcher app installed on your phone (no matter which one, it should run).
USERS PLEASE UPDATE THE THREAD WITH OTHER ADVICES FOR THE PROBLEM.

Um, or use search button on phone and search for right app or what ever, search button on phone is pretty useful if you brick your rom. :]

someone posted to use the search button, well, i used the search button to get me to 4shared.com and downloaded launcher pro. when it was done downloading i pulled down the notification thingy and pressed the download complete icon. it then installed launcher pro and everything is fine. thank u guys for all your help, and i hope this info helps someone else out.
Well,I have fastest method than this
Which I used when I do the same thing
Stock rom have default LG home which u deleted that,s why blackscreen comes
So
Just slide that notification bar and turn on internet and from PC go to market download launcher it will be directly download to your phone bcoz of on internet
And you got your launcher back
Or make flashable zip of home launcher and flash it

Hi Christian. Should I install the attached LG Home only if I have installed recovery mode? I still have access to cell phone's mass storage. Can I install it from there even if I haven't installed recovery mode?

Yes you can extract the zip on sd card and you have to put the app in system/app and set the right permissions. You need root for this and a file manager that read internal storage like Es file explorer.

[Q] Google Search widget

I have always kept the Google Search widget on my homescreen. I have a son who is curious about everything, so I'm often searching things, and I used to touch the mic button to play a song from Google music or dictate a text.
I've had a lot of trouble with my Vibrant lately and have finally gotten FishmanMod Blue 2.2 Frankenstein Slim to work for me. However, I have lost the search widget. When I try to add it from my widget list, all I get is an empty box that says and does absolutely nothing.
I went to Google Play and it said that Search isn't compatible with my device. (The photos looked like Google Now...)
I have tried searching the forums, and came across an .apk that I tried. I moved it from my downloads folder using Root Explorer into the /system/apps folder and rebooted.
Still the same result.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Thanks for reading!
when you found the widget and moved it in ROOT did you change the permissions then reboot or just moved the file and reboot ?

I changed the permissions. Basically what I did was looked up the thread where Woodrube said how to install GTalk as a system app. I copied those instructions in order to move this .apk. The permissions I set are:
Owner: Read, Write, Execute
Group: Read
Others: Read
None of the special permissions are ticked.
you dont need execute bro just check read on owner/group/others and check write for owner reboot and check again also you made sure you deleted the other one that was kinda there but not working ??

Thanks for the reply. For the record, I'm not a bro
Reset the permissions as you suggested. I looked for anything else with "google" and "search" in it and found nothing besides what I knew I had moved there. Rebooted, same results. I only see "search" in my widget list and it is still an empty box.
Okay, looks like I'm just completely missing the Google Search apk. I installed a 3rd party widget from the Play Store, and touching the mic activates the voice search (because I have it installed) but tapping anywhere else on the search box does absolutely nothing.
I need to look for the Google Search app itself. Any ideas on how to get it? I can't find it at all on Play store. I need it for 2.2.
im so sorry mama excuse my stupidity and do you have any other 2.2 roms ? you can open up the rom on your phone or computer and open the system folder and look for the google search apk are you familiar n doing that again my apologies

No problem. Please don't apologize. I fully realize and accept that I'm totally in the minority here. No big deal at all. Just struck me as funny.
That's a really good idea. I'll try that. I've got the voice search shortcut on my homescreen, and I can use that. I just dislike change.
Hopefully all this will cease to be an issue when I get my new phone. The Hubs (DigitalMonk) thinks I should wait for the new Nexus to come out on Tmo. I'm not at all sure I don't just want to stick with what I know and go with the SGSIII.
I feel you honestly I love the nexus but I always feel like those phone are never giving enough power etc for they to be top dollar phones and the last 2 had problems with the bootloader and recovery being wiped and volume /power buttons becoming disabled ill stick with what you know samsung phone might be plasticy but there solid IMO but if you was to get the new.phone its like trying to keep up with buying jordan lol stick to something you like not because its new but because its easier for you

Okay first I need to know what Android version you are running. If you are running 2.x, you can only use the old Google SearchBar Widget version 1.x. Do not try installing Google Now to Android 2.x because it is incompatible. You can extract the Google SearchBar Widget from gingerbread "gapps.zip" files: http://goo.im/gapps
If you are running ICS roms and want to use Google Now, there are modded version to make it working.
If you are using Jelly Bean roms, then you should be able to install Google Now from the Market.
If you are installing Google Now to Jelly Bean by manually moving the apk file to /system/app, the app needs a lib file called "libgoogle_recognizer_jni.so". However, the name of this file can change depends on the version you are using. This file is located in the \lib\armeabi-v7a\ folder within the apk file itself, it needs to be extracted and moved to the \system\lib\ folder. If you install the apk using conventional method, it will automatically extract this lib file to the necessary location, so you wouldn't have to worry about all this.
It's not recommended do this manually, but by either flashing the patch, or installing it from the Play Store.
Here is the patch for ICS roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835199
The patch for Jelly Bean roms is located at SlimRoms website in the addons section.

[MOD][Debloat | Black Google bootanimation] Taintless

Going to try and keep this short, sweet, and to the point.
I modified and created a zip for personal use all the way back to my Nexus 5 days and through my N5X use. I like my ROMs extremely minimal. Removal of media files and applications that I didn't deem necessary to have. Even went as far and told the script to remove the stock launcher and replace it with Nova. This little guy worked wonders for me and saved me loads of time. My app drawer (on initial start up) only consisted of the essentials; phone, contacts, messaging, a file manager, and Google Play. Only leaving the rest to be downloaded as needed.
----------------
Since ROMs aren't abundant yet, I'm deciding to share my zip to those who actually want to remove system apps and not settle on them just being disabled. Also, to keep from going into a file manager after every OTA/update removing each app individually.
-----------------
Had to modify this little guy to work on our phones.. It took me a bit to figure out (of course, right? Nothing is 'straight forward' with these phones )
-----------------
1.) I use this for personal use but did take some consideration in other users so majority of what I don't use is still there, this list would be a lot longer (and yes, some apps are for my older phones and didn't feel like removing them from the script).
2.) I will not remove an app from the removal script - if you don't like whats being removed, don't flash the zip.
3.) If I have forgot something that comes on the phone that CAN be downloaded from the Play Store (and can not be uninstalled), let me know. I'll add it to the script.
4.) If apps you are currently using are in the removal script, don't worry. The script makes them a user app instead of a system app (in my case it did anyway).
What's removed: :highfive:
*Clock (Google)
*Maps
*YouTube
*DownloadProviderUi
*HTMLViewer
*Calendar (Google)
*Drive (Google)
*OmaDmclient
*Photos (Google)
*Gallery2
*BasicDreams
*Calendar (Google)
*GoogleJapaneseInput
*Chrome
*CMFileManager
*Email
*Exchange2
*Galaxy4
*GooglePinyinIME
*Music2 (Google Music)
*NoiseField
*OpenWnn
*PhaseBeam
*Gmail
*Videos (Google Movies)
*KoreanIME
*OpenDelta
*Launcher3
What's added: :victory:
*Google stock bootanimation (black background with no text!)
*1 additional ringtone
*2 additional notifications
*4 additional alarm ringtones
Installation: :silly:
1. backup your ROM (there is no 'undo' button, so if you want whatever you want back, do a restore)
2. flash through TWRP (do not wipe cache/dalvik unless you want to get stuck on the Google logo - a hard power reset solves that problem anyways)
3. reboot

Again, you all are on XDA for a reason and know the risks of modifying your device in any sense. Since everyone else does this, I'll do it too:
I'm not responsible for your device.
For those that are having force closing issues on certain apps, enabling immersive mode within apps seems to fix the problem..
Things you need:
You need Android Terminal Emulator in the Play Store or cmd on Windows
i would prefer to do this from a PC so you can copy and paste the commands, but it can be done with any terminal emulator also.
Step 1: Connect your phone to your PC enable USB debugging mode
Step2: Open up cmd in Windows or the emulator on your phone and copy/paste or type:
- adb shell
itll give you a '$'
then copy and paste or type:
- settings put global policy_control immersive.full=apps,-com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox
should enable automatically.

Version/update doesn't matter..
Corrupted as in how?
I still use twrp 3.1.1. Beta 2
Corrupted as in it won't let me boot up into the OS. It's with other mods too
So far I've received an issue from a user on here (youll be able to read their issue on the last page) and i assume its user error due to me not having any issues at all..
My question is - has anyone else tried this script with complete success?? Given the 'thanks' i received, im assuming (again lol) that its working fine. In my experience on XDA, people only comment on whats wrong, and keep quiet when things are running as they should.. I'm now asking to voice your success just for reassurance for me
let me know guys, thanks! :good::fingers-crossed:
Just wanted to confirm that the debloat script works on the Feb update.. Just did it myself :highfive:
However, I did have a couple force closes on the Google app and Twitter (weird) -- after some testing, i got it working by enabling 'settings put global policy_control immersive.full=apps,-com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox' again
After I enabled that again, everything functions fine. :good:
Maybe this is needed for some apps that force close after flashing this debloat script (if you like immersive mode in apps)..
I'll post instructions in the 2nd post on the first page
Hey, thanks for this! Any chance of an update to April release?

Yeah I find that happens too. Plus despite having busybox titanium isn't even deleting system apps anymore, they are still there after reboot. So for now I stick to freezing...

[Rooted OnePlus 7Pro] - Used system-app remover and now the system wont boot. - possible bootloop situation

Hi all, in a bit of a panic right now because I think I might have screwed up my phone.
Basically I rooted it yesterday and I was looking at all the new features like the ability to systemize apps and the ability to remove systemized apps. Anyways I systemized termux just because I thought it would be cool to have the phone terminal app as a system app. But when I rebooted my phone termux didn't work. It would launch but I wouldn't be able to write anything in the terminal.
So I was kind of stumped at how to remove it then because I used the app-systemizer magisk module to systemize termux using termux. So I launched TWRP thinking I can just delete the files from system/privapp/. So I did just that and it kind of worked but the icon was still on my applications page which bugged me, so I read a little on forums and the app called "system app remover" was recommended. So I downloaded that and removed termux using this.
However, when I rebooted for these changes to take effect the phone wont go past the warning screen where it says something like "the bootloader is unlocked, integrity maybe compromised if you do something stupid (like me)". Then it just turns back to the bootloader screen where I can launch in recovery to access TWRP. but before I do anything else stupid I thought I'd ask for some professional help on here <3.
Thanks in advance,
Coxie
