I have always kept the Google Search widget on my homescreen. I have a son who is curious about everything, so I'm often searching things, and I used to touch the mic button to play a song from Google music or dictate a text.
I've had a lot of trouble with my Vibrant lately and have finally gotten FishmanMod Blue 2.2 Frankenstein Slim to work for me. However, I have lost the search widget. When I try to add it from my widget list, all I get is an empty box that says and does absolutely nothing.
I went to Google Play and it said that Search isn't compatible with my device. (The photos looked like Google Now...)
I have tried searching the forums, and came across an .apk that I tried. I moved it from my downloads folder using Root Explorer into the /system/apps folder and rebooted.
Still the same result.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Thanks for reading!
when you found the widget and moved it in ROOT did you change the permissions then reboot or just moved the file and reboot ?

I changed the permissions. Basically what I did was looked up the thread where Woodrube said how to install GTalk as a system app. I copied those instructions in order to move this .apk. The permissions I set are:
Owner: Read, Write, Execute
Group: Read
Others: Read
None of the special permissions are ticked.
you dont need execute bro just check read on owner/group/others and check write for owner reboot and check again also you made sure you deleted the other one that was kinda there but not working ??

Thanks for the reply. For the record, I'm not a bro
Reset the permissions as you suggested. I looked for anything else with "google" and "search" in it and found nothing besides what I knew I had moved there. Rebooted, same results. I only see "search" in my widget list and it is still an empty box.
Okay, looks like I'm just completely missing the Google Search apk. I installed a 3rd party widget from the Play Store, and touching the mic activates the voice search (because I have it installed) but tapping anywhere else on the search box does absolutely nothing.
I need to look for the Google Search app itself. Any ideas on how to get it? I can't find it at all on Play store. I need it for 2.2.
im so sorry mama excuse my stupidity and do you have any other 2.2 roms ? you can open up the rom on your phone or computer and open the system folder and look for the google search apk are you familiar n doing that again my apologies

No problem. Please don't apologize. I fully realize and accept that I'm totally in the minority here. No big deal at all. Just struck me as funny.
That's a really good idea. I'll try that. I've got the voice search shortcut on my homescreen, and I can use that. I just dislike change.
Hopefully all this will cease to be an issue when I get my new phone. The Hubs (DigitalMonk) thinks I should wait for the new Nexus to come out on Tmo. I'm not at all sure I don't just want to stick with what I know and go with the SGSIII.
I feel you honestly I love the nexus but I always feel like those phone are never giving enough power etc for they to be top dollar phones and the last 2 had problems with the bootloader and recovery being wiped and volume /power buttons becoming disabled ill stick with what you know samsung phone might be plasticy but there solid IMO but if you was to get the new.phone its like trying to keep up with buying jordan lol stick to something you like not because its new but because its easier for you

Okay first I need to know what Android version you are running. If you are running 2.x, you can only use the old Google SearchBar Widget version 1.x. Do not try installing Google Now to Android 2.x because it is incompatible. You can extract the Google SearchBar Widget from gingerbread "gapps.zip" files: http://goo.im/gapps
If you are running ICS roms and want to use Google Now, there are modded version to make it working.
If you are using Jelly Bean roms, then you should be able to install Google Now from the Market.
If you are installing Google Now to Jelly Bean by manually moving the apk file to /system/app, the app needs a lib file called "libgoogle_recognizer_jni.so". However, the name of this file can change depends on the version you are using. This file is located in the \lib\armeabi-v7a\ folder within the apk file itself, it needs to be extracted and moved to the \system\lib\ folder. If you install the apk using conventional method, it will automatically extract this lib file to the necessary location, so you wouldn't have to worry about all this.
It's not recommended do this manually, but by either flashing the patch, or installing it from the Play Store.
Here is the patch for ICS roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835199
The patch for Jelly Bean roms is located at SlimRoms website in the addons section.

Hi all,
Well for everyone who want's to have the Google apps like:
Android market
Youtube
Gmail
etc.
Here is a link to a share where the gapps4archos can be downloaded.
http://code.google.com/p/archos-apps-installer/downloads/list
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
WARNING: You cannot install this appInstaller if you installed gApps4Archos or any other gApps installer. Anytime you switch appInstaller programs, you MUST reset your device back to stock. If you've NEVER installed ANY market/gApps installer, then your good... no need to reset.
NOTE: If you've ONLY used my appInstaller, then you can REMOVE the old files using my app and re-install the apps at the same time, then REBOOT.
1) Download - http://code.google.com/p/archos-apps-installer/downloads/list
2) Copy download to your device via USB (if you didnt download directly using your Archos)
3) Use 'Files' app to locate gAppsInstaller, then execute/install it
4) Choose install packaged apps or choose to install your own packaged 'apps.zip' file located on the internal drive (not sdcard)
4a) There maybe a short delay after you tap an install button (its installing and you'll be notified when its done, about 5-10 seconds)
5) REBOOT!!
6) Follow the Market FIX instructions below
MARKET FIX:
This will get you most missing apps from the market, except some "protect market apps"
Setting-->Manage Applications-->All-->Market (Clear Cache then 'Force Stop' -- DO NOT clear data)
Setting-->Manage Applications-->All-->Google Services Framework (Clear data then 'Force Stop')
REBOOT again
Market Fix video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l-nySibzeA&feature=player_embedded#!
If you do this correctly you will find most missing apps like 'Copilot Live USA' in the Market. However, some apps will not show because they are "protected" Market apps. These include 'NY Times'. Google search "android protected market apps" if your not familar.
NOTE: The latest version of GMAIL and Youtube can be downloaded in the market...
Thanks to our friends from the archosfans.com forum
Thankyou for this, I have seen how much work you have put into it. Tried gAppsInstaller_v3.apk this morning and seems to be working well, no FC's etc so far...
(edit)Oppss ment to say thankyou Kenyu73 for the app and thanks Dreetje for posting, thought you was Kenyu under a different name...

Well i didn't made it, Kenyu73 did make it It makes my device complete, really love the Archos device!
Thanks! I've looked at these instructions a dozen times on ArchosFans and always missed that market was clear cache not clear data and never figured out why it didn't work right for me. With the latest gapps I'm now seeing most everything. Awesome guide!
Edit: For some reason when I use this installer however, TweetDeck will not run properly. It always Force Closes once I've signed into my account and I cannot fix it. This is one of my favorite apps. If someone could figure this out I would appreciate it.
Edit 2: This installer causes a ton of apps not to launch in my experience thus far. TweetDeck as mentioned, Moblox, Angry Birds, they all just FC or hang endlessly. I'd still recommended the other installer with the same steps outlined in this post.
Stupid question but does "reset your device back to stock" mean anything else than a reboot? Like an Android reset or something?

thanks for the advise on market acces update, now finally updated gmail apk
I have the Google Marketplace up and running and for the most part it works wonderfully. My biggest issue are protected applications I use on my HTC EVO aren't showing up and some of these application I really use / enjoy. Some of these are:
1) BatteryView
2) Battery Watch
3) Splash ID!
4) Monster App Pro (I'm using the non-Pro right now)
I've been trying to add the "Market Access" application to the mix to help me with this issue, but thus far can't get z4root to work. Oh, it says it was successful, but none of the programs that need root can get it from the Super User application.
I can live without these protected applications, they are simply nice to have -- except Splash ID!, which IMHO, is necessary to protect my development personal, professional, and development information. I was able to get a work around for Splash ID, for which I'm thankful.

Excuse my ignorance, but how is this at all new? There's been a gapps hack available for every Archos device for quite some time now. It's always been readily available on ArchosFans.com.

It also has less apps in it, saving space for where the apps are installed, especially since Archos only provided around 275~ MB of space for app installation
And not all apps can move to sd card so any space is helpful
All we need now is the Samsung Galaxy Tab email app ported over. If anyone has any idea please share.
Thanks for posting the info for my gAppsInstaller. I've been away from the game for a few days now doing housework "mods" (=
The only issue remaining that I'm aware of with this app is a certain sub-set of apps that FC (AutoZone, OSMonitor and a few others mentioned in this thread. I haven't had time to research, but whatever the gApps4Archos is doing is making these work ok... I'm thinking its some registration of dll files ('so' files perhaps). I do know it copies 4-5 .so files into the froyo/system directory, but i'm not sure right now if I need to do some type of '.so' file registration with them.
If any linux guru's out there know of something I need to do specifically with these (besides copying them to the '/froyo/system' directory, please let me know.

I dont think he created the original gApps4Archos package, he only de-compiled it, added the updated the apps with the newer 2.2 market then vanished.
I think he dropped of the radar after he did the re-package of that app.

yes i use that and youtube comes with it but it keeps fc and it wont download from market
You know when you double tap the home button you get the voice search powered by vlingo.. is there anyway to completely remove it and disable the keymap for it?
Because i cannot use the quickdesk app at all. You can either press home once to enable the app (works) or double tap it (Blasted voice search always comes up first so i can not use it). i prefer opening the app by double click as i want the single click for home..
i have a rooted phone and used root uninstaller to remove the app but with the app removed doubling clicking brought up nothing, not even quickdesk or vlingo so im thinking it is mapped in.. :/
anyone?
You can freeze it with Titanium Backup.
yeah i have tried freezing it but then when i double click nothing comes up... its sort of like the phone has permanently mapped the double tap to only open vlingo and nothing else
look in the apps section for homemyhome it will allow to set up what ever application you want to open with a double click.

It's in one of the forums here. It works very well. Just do search on "homemyhome"
In Jkay's "Deluxe Settings" app (search xda) there is an option where you can unckeck "home button double click". After that Iwas able to use quickdesk as I love it. Now, read the jkay thread since I don't know exactly what you have to do to get it to work since for me the app came preloaded with a custom ROM I flashed.
EDIT: Ok, I did you a favour: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154278
THere you'll find all the guide you need to install it. OF course you'll have to have root and CWM installed. This is because you need a theme with jkay support for the app to work.
EDIT2: I found the thread for the app that Cosmic Blue recommended. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299923
It's way simpler than my method for just the home buton thing.
Thanks a lot for finding the thread!! but when I install homemyhome it just says application not installed with a tick next to it.
Also it said get rid of voicetogo.apk but I dont even have that yet my vlingo voice works :/
I am rooted btw stock rom

Disclaimer: I have just enabled root today and and it's been a fun ride. While I'm new, the info below is verified by me to get a result on the SGS2 International version I own.
I has success with removing VoiceToGo.apk and substituting it with Google Voice Dialler. Perhaps you could look through the steps below and see if you might have missed something?
Troubleshooting:
Have you restarted your phone? (probably an unnecessary question, but I generally do it to be safe)
Have you double-checked /system/app/ to verify VoiceToGo.apk is still present in that directory? If you can still run Vlingo, then this app is probably still in that directory.
Workflow:
I also followed the instructions in the post tomascunill linked (had to read the instructions a couple of times to ensure I understood them).
I used CWM to do a full device backup before doing this just in case I needed /system/app/VoiceToGo.apk again.
I fully deleted VoiceToGo.apk with the free version of Titanium Backup app from the Play Store.
I connected the phone while in normal mode (not download mode) to my Linux laptop and used adb from the Android SDK to take it from there.
adb commands I used were:
To verify adb saw my device (which it didn't initially because I had the phone in download mode), I ran:
Code:
[downloads]$ adb devices
List of devices attached
304D19E8516BED9E device
To make adb remount my file root file system, I ran:
Code:
[downloads]$ adb remount
To push the VoiceDialer.apk to the correct location I executed:
Code:
[downloads]$ adb push VoiceDialer.apk /system/app/VoiceToGo.apk
I then restarted the phone and all was good.
My son was double-tapping that button and starting Vlingo ALL THE TIME. But now I can control that. The great thing is that Google Voice Dialler doesn't launch while on the lock screen (my son isn't quite that smart to unlock the phone)
Hope this helps you work out what's happening.
It seems that since Google updated Market to Google Play, I can't access or install a bunch of apps that I want.
The two that bother me right now are 'Lookout Mobile Security' and 'Firefox for Android'. If I search Google Play, neither show up in search results. If I use the browser and go directly to either Firefox's or Lookout's site to install, I get redirected to Google Play and the Install button in both cases is grayed out and nothing happens.
And I'm very unhappy that I can no longer download the apks using my computer and side load/install it.
????????????
I'm on a standard Nook Color, with the newest stable release running in EMMC:
Android version: 2.3.7
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Mod version: CyanogenMod 7.1.0-encore
Build No: GWK74
Everything else works fine and I have no other problems or complaints.
Can someone give me some things to try and get this working???
(is this the correct forum for this type of problem??? or can someone please direct me to the right place?? I didn't want to post this to the development forum.)
Same problem here, with last build of Mirage.
I modified the build.prop file, identifying as HTC Vision.
Playstore (in desktop) now shows HTC Vision as my device.
But still no full access to market with my nook, I can't see gmail app, for example.
I tried again to change build.prop with Nexus S as device.
Playstore has not even noticed the change.
Any hint ?

I don't have your Rom, but never had problems with Nightly Cm7 or needed to change build.prop file.
Did you try again with flashing recommended gapps for your ROM?
Unleashed from my Revolutionized Desire HD
Yes, I flashed again gapps after having wiped cache and data, and restored stock build.prop.
Now market works again.
I think I lost full market access when I changed the resolution, using LCD resolution, though this app doesn't seem to change anything in build.prop.
Maybe the solution is there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580827
The market has always been weird on my Nook. It randomly decides to not allow me to install some apps one day, then will allow me to install the next. Not sure what the cause is either. Just says the device is not compatible.

Any report of a fix yet? My Nook has also weirded out after changing LCD resolution!
Taken from the samiam's old cm9 thread
If you notice that some apps are missing from the market, this may be due to the fact that these ICS builds for the nook do not include support for apps which request phone permissions. Although this ideally would be fixed by developers not requesting phone permissions for their app unless it absolutely needs to be phone-specific, you can also fix it by flashing the telephony-permissions-fix.zip file located in the misc folder. You will likely want to flash this file immediately after flashing your rom.

Anything other than the standard LCD densities will not allow access to some applications. There is a list somewhere that I had bookmarked, but must have deleted it. If you search for the densities that are standard (MDPI, HDPI, etc) and set it, it may help.
Yeah, these missing apps are most likely a result of a non-standard LCD Density. To fix this, you can install a hardcoded 160 dpi play store that does not run an LCD Density check. If for any other reasons you can't access apps (different country or whatever), this hardcoded play store will let you.
See the thread with DL links here: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551118)
Make a backup of your vending.apk in /system/app/, and then rename the hardcoded play store to vending.apk. Place the hardcoded vending.apk in system/app/, change permissions to rw-r--r--, and reboot. Should work right away. If not, follow the additional instructions in the link above.
I take no credit nor liability for the results of following these instructions. Make backups of every file you replace and you should be alright.
I'm using Axura - Moped/FishmanMod v1 now. Really like it, has made my Vibrant usable again. However, I miss GTalk. I've searched google and these forums but I'm not able to find the .apk for a froyo ROM specific to my Vibrant and the one I attempted to install failed. Can anyone direct me toward the correct .apk for Google Talk?
Also, do I need to force it as a system app with Root Explorer?
Thank you.
When you way it failed, what did it do/say? Just not work/open or did it say something like Parse Error?
Yes, you need to install it in /system/app and set the permissions as well. The reboot. Try again with the apk that you have and let me know if it works. If not then I can upload one for you tonight that should work on Froyo.
Thank you for the reply. When I try to install the .apk I have, it goes through the normal screen, telling me what the app has access to. I click install and it comes back with "Application not installed."
I will see if I can find some instructions to do it with Root Explorer and see if that works.
Root Explorer method is easy.
Just copy the apk from where you have it and go into /system/app and paste it there. After it is pasted, go back to it and long-press it until you see permissions come up. Your permissions should be the first column all checked and then the top 1 of the next 2 columns checked. (The bottom 2 on columns 2&3 are left unchecked). Then exit out of RE and reboot.
Since it is a /system/app it can't be installed through the Package Installer like a normal app. It just isn't coded like that.
Thanks! That did it! I really appreciate the help. And especially thanks for not making me feel dumb. The Hubs (sorry, can't remember his nick here on XDA) has had a crummy day at work and I'm glad I don't have to ask him to help me figure this out.
No worries, I've helped you before I think. I recognized your username (pretty distinctive). I am usually hanging out in Gen and Q&A most of the day to help out (I have a job that I can do that in). You can GTalk him now and tell him, I hope his day gets better.
Can you edit the topic and put a Solved in it? Go to your OP and click edit, then Go Advanced and there you can put it in the title.
The thread title has been edited. Thank you. Yes, you did help me before with some issues with my Vibrant. The poor thing was on its last leg but we tried this ROM and it's been good so far. After adding back apps one at a time I believe Zedge was the culprit as I started having issues immediately upon reinstalling it.
I've already let him know via GTalk that it's working again. He said he remembered you from when he had his Vibrant. Thanks again!
Well, my girlfriend updated her Galaxy S3 a couple of days ago, and suddenly the gallery wouldn't work. It just showed up as com.sec.android.gallery3d in the app drawer. I've done everything in my power, even rooted the damn thing, but nothing seems to work.
Amidst my ferocious attack on the problem I seem to have gotten rid of the "faulty" gallery apk and can't find a good one via google that works.
Odd thing is that at first the com.sec.android.gallery3d app was missing from /system/app. When I did a search for "gallery" I found SecGallery2013.apk that was called "com.sec.android.gallery3d" in it's properties. Kind of like a symlink I think.
That original SecGallery2013.apk is now gone with the wind for some reason (my ADHD took over a while). I actually found a com.google.android.gallery3d that works (but not original) and com.sec.android.gallery3d-2be92cef98aab5194d4ae68382324577.apk (took away the number at the end of course) that seems to be the original, but crashes constantly.
I'm at a loss, hence why I did the topic name "need stock apk", as that might fix things.
Though somewhere on the filesystem (I'm still somewhat of a noob as to how android is built) there were once a folder called com.sec.android.gallery3d which is not there anymore. Any attempts at installing the apk has, obviously, also failed.
I've read almost every other possible solution, but all of them seem to be under the impression that I would have the sense to backup every single thing...
Help!
What android, firnware are you running right now?
You can get the gallery app from any STOCK BASED flashable zip (many lite version roms available in this forum). Just open the zip, look under system/app or something similar, take the apk file, put it in system/app of your own phone with rw-r-r permissions, then reboot.
Stock system apps can't be just installed, they must be manually placed in system/app directory.
Try to flash Google Apps from CWM or TWRP (I assume you already flashed CWM or TWRP with Odin)
A brief explanation of Google Apps:
Apps like Play Store, Gallery, Camera, etc... Or the stock proprietary software made by Google are all in this one zip file called GApps, All you need to know is how to flash ZIPs (easy as 1,2,3) and the GApps for your android version.
Other options:
Find another 3rd party Gallery alternative from Google Play (EASIEST)
Flash CyanogenMod or an alternate ROM (Too risky just for getting gallery back)
Just get the images from the device to your computer
Well that's all I got, PM me if you need anything, hit "Thanks" if I helped you
