[Q] How to root 2.3.4 - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm fairly new to xda and android and i would like to root my atrix and install cwm.
Can someone give me a link to the easiest way to root the atrix that works with 2.3.4?
And also, by using any of the rooting methods will I lose any data at all on my phone(like contacts, pictures, apps, etc.)?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255548
rooting won't cause you to lose data, but unlocking the bootloader will put you in a stock state.

THANKS!
thank you so much for that link!
I just rooted it and it was super easy. I was kind of intimidated by the complicated steps that I saw over on another website.
Thanks again!
I just need help installing cwm now, and honestly, i have no idea where to start.
All help appreciated!

do you have AIM or MSN? i'll walk you through the steps to unlock your bootloader and install CWM.

I actually never understood what unlocking the bootloader did.
And as for CWM, is it supposed to look like this?

Sorry, another question
Just one more question.
Does applying a theme from CWM wipe your phone?
What about applying a rom? Would that wipe your phone?

you have to unlock your bootloader before you can get CWM on a motorola atrix, unfortunately. to do so, you'll need to flash pudding from the development section and run the fastboot oem unlock script in fastboot mode
after that, you can fastboot flash a recovery. you'll get into CWM by booting up into recovery mode, the same way you boot into fastboot mode or RSD mode.
installing a theme won't wipe your data, no. and for your other question, that isn't CWM recovery; it will look more like this: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ClockworkMod-Recovery-31.png

Fruit cakes and CWM question
I have a similar question.
A helpful explanation from a dev/member http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261&page=48 explains how to unlock and root.
However, he says to add ROM Racer's CWM and 2 Fruitcakes/
What are Fruit Cakes? What do they do?

Yes, applying a rom wipes your phone, but you can back up all youre contacts a and data and apps with things like titanium backup and my backup pro. After flashing a rom you can restore your apps and data. hope this helps.

Fruitcakes allow you to get your phone back to "stock" via CWM, instead of having to flash an sbf. If you have an official update of GB on your phone, with an unlocked bootloader, you can brick your phone by trying to flash a pre-GB sbf. Read that thread and you'll get a much better understanding of why they are a very good thing.
Simply put, they are a safe way to get your phone back to out-of-box condition, but with an unlocked BL.

this is an excellent tutorial video on how to unlock your boot loader he even shows you how to re lock it, even though i haven't re locked it.

Were you rooted before flashing cm7? because I experienced the same issue when I unlocked my BL and tried to install cm7 without root...tried different methods but none worked, I hope I'm wrong but I think you might have soft brick and the only method that worked for me was flashing a SBF file through rsdlite
Check out this thread, it will help you solve your issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204
I did charge it the first time i plugged it in it went straight to the battery (good) but then a couple mins later my gf hit the wire knocking it out the socket i plugged it back it but now it jus goes to the moto logo and i was using this recovery.

edit: its charging at 40% and the nest step is to flash a better rocovery i think. or a different kernel but how do i do this if i cant put phone into mass storage to copy it over ?
So can you charge your phone?
Can you enter fast boot mode?
Aren't you using rom racers recovery mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
You could flash it via fastboot
Then perform a fastboot full wipe (there's a script that does it all, check dev section )
And tried reflashing cm7;
Or flash a stock rom check fruit cake

I figured out why my phone wasn't working well cm7 at least I was using the wrong recovery I flashed a cwm recovery and Bam it worked like a charm now I have no idea as to why the recovery I had at first wouldn't restore a backup that it had made but oh well its running smoother then ever before.
thanks to everyone on this thread and the few others I've been to.
Much appreciated

WT19i bootloader

OK, I'm in a bit of an unsure situation here.
My phone initially had 0.62 firmware and I downgraded to 0.58 because I thought I needed that to get root access, unlock the bootloader and install custom ROMS. However now I find out that I didn't have to do that, I think I read an old tutorial
I believe I have unlocked the bootloader already, but I'm not sure. The configuration status says that bootloader is able to be unlocked. I did the process earlier but it gave no confirmation messages. I am not going to try and upgrade to 0.62 because I do not want to brick the phone with an unlocked bootloader.
How can I check that my bootloader is in fact locked? Or can I still keep 0.58 and install a custom ROM?
My goal only really is to get root access, install a stable custom ROM and delete the irritating stock programs and other bull**** bundled with the phone. Any other bonuses like overclocking is extra but not really necessary.
U can check bootloader status in service menu.i dont knw code to enter in it.try search

No...that's not it, that only tells you if your phone is capable of having the bootloader unlocked. That doesn't say anything about whether it is or not.

Try to flash custom kernel.
If kernel is flashed and it boots it means you have unlocked bootloader if flashing fails you have locked bootloader.
Thanks for the response. I tried this now and it said it failed because it's already unlocked. OK, so I guess that's done.
I put in some custom Kernel, I think it was RAGE or something.
I wish to now put in a custom ROM.
Please help me understand which one to use. I want something that's stable and used by the majority. I only really want to be able to have root access and delete unnecessary programs, although any bonus features would be great.
I have downloaded HYBROM but as of yet still haven't tried installing it as I'm not sure how compatible it is. Any advice?
It does not matter now, I installed CyanogenMod, thanks for the responses.

Install CM7,its best rom out there but if you need radio install one of modded custom roms but it is slower and has less features than CM7.

Some little help so I don't need to create another topic.
I'm trying to unlock the bootloader of a LWW but it seems the PC doesn't identify the phone in fastboot properly.
The phone turns the blue light. I've tried to reinstall the flash/fast drivers already.
Any help?
Were those fastboot drivers installed properly the first time around? Are you sure they are installed?
I'm not too sure what you mean by the PC doesn't recognise it, if you have a flashing tool that should recognise it but the Windows OS may not necessarily recognise the phone connected in flash mode. I know when I first connected, nothing actually happened and I had to go into device manager and manual point to the required drivers, when that was done I was able to proceed.
Try using this tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRH3pC7MhEA
Doesn't matter if you've got fastboot.exe elsewhere in the computer, just download the given files and put them into a folder on the desktop, do exactly what he does and you should be able to get it up and running.
Open dialpad and enter *#*#service#*#*#
You have reached service menue. Choose service info and then configuration. Scroll down and look at the rooting status.
If there is bootloader unlocked: yes
then you have an unlocked bootloader, otherwise not.

Will I lose root?

I have a Sprint SGS 3 rooted with build ALF9 model SPH-L710 in USA.
There is an update it wants me to install.
Will I lose root? If so, can I just go back to my clockwork recovery and restore it?
Or is it easy just to root it again the same way as before?
Thanks

Chances are you are going to lose root.
Can I just re-root it the old way (odin/clockwork I think), or will there be some protection
or need to find a newer root method?
Look here and read it good(to achieve update and root with new firmware and baseband)....:thumbup:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28612771
Also you can achieve the same goal( update and retain root)here too:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28597495
Proofs in the pudding(running custom rom with new baseband and updated build)

It won't install the upgrade rom.zip gives me an error
7 something and fails. Guess I have to wait for the
Sprint stock rom to be posted and then flash it,
then re-root or wait for a posted stock rom w/root
to flash from clockwork recovery?
CWM
you wont be able to install the update with clockwork as your recovery
Imma pm you in a minute and get you right just wait and ill let you know.....and you can flash through cwm ive done it twice...Did you make a nandroid of your stock rooted?

if you loose root, just re-root
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoEVDgjTTdg&list=UUbR6jJpva9VIIAHTse4C3hw&index=5&feature=plcp
I unrooted, tried OTA and says none (which there was),
re-rooted again with newest rom manager and clockwork,
still can't flash the update. Guess I don't really need it
(what does it even do, I don't use wallet or dropbox).
But it would be nice to be able to flash updates in the future
without wiping anything.

I don't want to flash the original nandroid, as I would lose 100's of apps, saves, settings
that I do not want to take HOURS to fix. Will this method keep all my settings, saves, widgets, etc?
If not, don't I just wait for a rooted updated sprint rom all baked and flash it over mine so I don't lose
a thing? Also the link in #2 doesn't work, what file was it, I might already have it.
P.S. Still don't know what oxeded is or deoxed

In this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390496) it clearly states that since my device is HBOOT 2.00.002 I can't install custom rom using the old-fashioned way and I must flash BOOT.IMG from the rom.
So I did EXACTLY as dtronics said in that thread, ROOTED my device, installed CWM using ROM Manager, and then decided to flash boot.img using fastboot (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752270).
That also completed succesfuly with no errors but now my phone continuously restarts itself into CWM. It can't start the stock rom or the custom.
then after I press (VOL+) + (POWER) keys on this Red icon screen I enter CWM
And now I can't go any further, I'm stuck. Please help!

Thanks, I did that, but it wasn't the problem. I just figured it out! The problem was in CWM.
The guide was a bit unclear so I obviously didn't flash it right. This is what I did, i flashed new CWM image using this tutorial (sorry, can't paste outside link), the best and easiest way to do this.
I was really worried I bricked the phone, now everything is working great!! :good:

Why not use 4ext recovery? 4ext recovery has a tool called HTC Smartflash for S-On devices/HTCDEV Unlocked devices that make flashing a lot easier, so you won't have to run into issues like this.

Not really familiar with using 4ext recovery so I decided to go this way. I'll be changing rom soon, since I'm trying to find the one with best battery life, so then I'll try 4ext too.

Two questions from a n00b

Hello!
I am going to root my honor 7, but i have some clarification questions first. Hopefully someone could kindly help me.
So, this is the procedure:
Unlock Bootloader
Flash TWRP Recovery
Install SuperSu from TWRP
My questions are:
1 - Is there a way to check if the bootloader is just unlocked on the H7? (I remember the "hidden menu" from Xperias)
2 - If i want to update to MM when it will be released, i need to unroot B170 (is it enough to select "Unroot" from SuperSU app?) and flash stock recovery. Is this enough?
3 - why should i need the stock boot.img? What is it exactly? Is it the bootloader? Flashing stock boot.img back does it mean that simply the bootloader will be locked again?
Thanks so much for the clarifications!

1 - I do not wish to check it now, but I remember if you reboot into bootloader there is a text indicating the status
2 - You need to have an unmodified system (and boot) for the OTA to work, so it could be safer to restore stock system.img and boot.img completely.
3 - I don't really know, hopefully somebody else will be able to answer. Last time I did an unroot+OTA upgrade, I did not have to restore stock boot.img.

the boot.img contains the kernel, and this is sometimes modief during a system update, and different version dont wpork on a certain firmware
for example, b140 and b170 use same kernel, as the on-or kernel by @sminki works (almost, but probably) fine, whoever, for what i know, it doesnt work on b121, because the kernel is different,
the latest full firmware is b121, so to downgrade or to unbrick, you need to install b121, so the boot.img also needs to be flashed, if you want it to boot
i hope that will explain it better
also to root, you can use the multitool by @inside!out, if you are not confident, or just too lazy:

What about the bootloader? if i want to update via emui do i have to RE-lock it?
or maybe it will be re-locked automatically when reflashing stock boot.img?
last question, if i am rooted and unlocked, will i at least recieve the updates notification via emui?
thanks a lot. i am trying to study and get better "skilled" about android.
