[Q] Auto airplane mode keeping wifi on, in gingerbread - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I need a free app for automatically turn on/off airplane mode without turning off WIFI or Bluetooth. So, only the cell signal.
There are a lot of apps which can do it but all them turn off wifi too
Before, Tasker had this option, but in Gingerbread google has disabled it, so it cant do it
I have tried this: https://market.android.com/details?id=be1ay.flymode&feature=search_result
But dont work. So, any idea?
Thanks so much!

I do believe it's not possible to do it anymore, unless big changes in the kernel or the OS are made.

When you said there are a lot of apps can do it, can you list some out? Thanks.

aavan it should be possible because you can see this app: SwitchPro. This app do it through a widget so is not automatically, but works perfectly. So it is possible

Nothing exists right now. Although there are 3rd party apps that turn airplane mode on and off with a touch...the roots of actual airplane mode run much much deeper than that. It would take ALOT of work to create an app for that.

dissable phone signal + enable wifi possible?

Hi I was hoping someone could help me with this. The only way I can see to disable the phone signal is to turn on airplane mode, however this will obviously prevent me from then enabling wifi. Is there a way to run the handset with just wifi enabled?
erm, kinda! you can use a settings widget included in the touchflo UI to disable mobile data, but not turn the whole phone off apart from airplane mode that i know of.

haha very good.
I wanted to do something similar. That is, have all wireless turned off except for GPS (in order to preserve battery life). I put the hero in airplane mode and then turned on the GPS. Nice to know that works! Not sure why you cant use the same procedure for Wifi (but I can't either).

Will not help... you can still make emergency calls without the SIM... it won't turn off the GSM/3g radio.
does anyone know of a widget that will just toggle the phone on/off like the HTC Widgets for bluetooth, wifi etc. ?
Just found an application in the market called "Airplane Autoswitch" which apparently switches on airplane mode according to a schedule, but keeps WiFi switched on. Assuming it works, this definitely implies that you should be able to write a toggle widget to do the same thing on demand.
Regards,
Dave
An app as just been released called "airplane mode wifi" which seems to do what you are asking.

Yup... Airplane Mode Modifier on the Android Market to keep WiFi enabled while Airplane Mode is enabled (so you dont have to fiddle with it on restarts or anything like that)...
There are also other apps as well that provide the same function... just the one I use...

You don't need any app. In Airplane mode you can use both wireless and bluetooth.

True, but the app I mentioned and many others allow you to keep it on indefinitely! So you dont have to fiddle with BT/WiFi when you restart with airplane mode still enabled!
That way you can turn Airplane Mode on, and never have to ever turn it off or mess with WiFi/BT settings again!
I think there might be roms that are tablet only so no cell signal at all
I learned something today.
I always believed that airplane mode killed all wireless transmission...
That is of course not true..
Many thanks for the A.M. lesson! !....g

Hi, I downloaded the Airplane Mode Modifier app for my i717, 4.0.4. After I adjusted the settings to allow Wifi to stay on in airplane mode I looked at the battery consumption and it still indicated Cell Standby of 22% and Phone Idle of 14% of battery usage. Just wondered if I'm missing something. Seems to me that battery usage for these in Airplane mode should be 0%?
@gampbell
I'm just wondering what app you, or others, are using to check what is using your battery ?
I have Eliixar2 on my Nook tablet, but would prefer not to rely on just the one app like to check battery usage.

[Q] Tasker Problem

Anyone know what the hell is wrong with my Tasker? After every action it immediately undoes what it was set up to do. For example if it's supposed to turn on data, it will for like 5 seconds then immediately turn it off. Same with GPS, WiFi, Location Access, etc. This is for all profiles. I've tried disabling and enabling every profile thinking maybe one is the cause of it with no luck. I also removed exit tasks for particular ones and didn't find anything. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing Tasker with no luck. I've attached the profile backups to this post if anyone wants to take a look.
Note: I am using Tasker along with the Secure Settings plugin (only GPS and location toggles are enabled). I'm also on 4.3 using Tasker 4.1u3.

It was working before. All of the sudden this started happening. It also starts running the profiles, just immediately turns off whatever was turned on.

Thanks, but I've already tried both these things with no luck. I think it may have to do with the profiles themselves? If anyone could take a look I would appreciate it.

Smart Settings questions

Does this thing actually work? I have sound, wifi and bluetooth set to go on when I get homne and I verified in them that the GPS circle is correctly around my house but none of them go on or off when I leave
If I'm doing something wrong, could someone explain how to properly get this working

you're not in airplane mode are you?
it will not turn things on if you are.
other than that it sounds like you are doing it right.
if you can not get it working, you can use a NFC tag you tap when you get home to turn it all on.

Nope, not in airplane mode. It started to work today after I reset the location in my places and smart settings so who knows, both were reset to the same values. Not going to question it lol

Tasker with Note8 - Discuss Here!

Hello fellow Note8 and Tasker users. I'm huge fan of both and usually have lots of questions on how to accomplish things in Tasker. Some of those things are device specific, so I thought a thread here may be handy.
Let me start with this: does anyone know how to use Tasker to activate PowerSave mode? I'm a teacher and I'd love to have this active when I'm teaching (then turn that off during my lunch break/plan period). Is there a certain intent I'd have to send? Or is it simpler?
Also, without root, I cannot turn on/off mobile data or adjust GPS settings...
Any workaround that you guys know of?

In case Tasker can't help you, I am doing everything you have mentioned using Bixby Voice. Just set up the Quick Actions and assign a voice prompt to it.

That's actually really cool and I didn't know it could do that. The beauty of Tasker however is that it's automated. I don't even have to think about it. I step into work and my phone is on Powersave mode with no mobile data connection or Wi-Fi (while I teach). I get in my car and my GPS is in high accuracy mode. I go in the library and my phone is on silent. I go to a house I'm tutoring in and my calculator app is already pulled up. It's a thing of beauty!
Okay so it turns out the method linked earlier is already "prepackaged" so to speak: it's included in Auto Tools! I already had that app and didn't even know it could do this. So you still need to use ADB to grant it the proper permissions but it will save you the effort of getting the app factory and importing the xml file and exporting the app.
I'm excited to see if I can toggle mobile data this way! It seems to be hit or miss for different devices. Anyone tried on their Note 8?

I have been reading over this for a while. I was wondering if this would allow for toggling on and off wifi hotspot? I've been trying, but I read something regarding Nougat and how the name/service or something was changed.
I have no problem toggling it off and on using the quick tiles, but I have an Android car unit that I use my Hotspot for.
This worked on my older phones, being able to stick an NFC tag to my phone mount in the car to toggle the Hotspot on when placed in it. Or having the Hotspot start/stop when connecting or disconnecting from the unit's Bluetooth.
Thank you for any help in advance.
@wigglitz I'm not sure how to toggle Hotspot, at least didn't find anything related on System-, Global or Secure Settings.
If you are using Toggle Setting method linked before, here is how you can find what you can change:
These commands will show you list of available settings with current values
Code:
adb shell settings list secure
adb shell settings list global
adb shell settings list system
Now, if you are unsure if some setting is what you think it to be, I'll give you an example how to check it.
Let say by using command adb shell settings list secure you find setting install_non_market_apps
Now if you are unsure if that is the one toggling Unknows sources on/off, do this:
Toggle Unknows sources off from settings, then type:
Code:
adb shell settings get secure install_non_market_apps
This will return 0 (because you set if off)
Toggle it back on from settings and run same command, now it will return 1
Now you can be pretty sure that's the one and will be able to make task to automatically allow installing apps from unknown sources when opening Substratum (for example)

Look into Auto Tools (Tasker plugin). That's what I'm using instead. There's definitely an option to toggle hotspot. There's literally hundreds of settings to tinker with, but my understanding is that the success of the individual options depends on the phone model.
I'm testing to see if I can toggle mobile data on the Note 8 and if time, I can test wifi hotspot too. :good:
GOOD NEWS!!!
Mobile data CAN be enabled/disabled without root on the Snapdragon model!!
Use the app Auto Tools with Tasker, give the appropriate permissions with ADB, and it works beautifully!! I'm so happy. ???
GPS works too - I can change it from battery saver to high accuracy and back at will.
I used to disable Mobile data, but now I leave it ON all the time. When you connect to wifi it's not in use so why to even bother turning it off? When I'am not on Wifi it's on. What I'am thinking of doing to save more battery is switch to 2G when connected to wifi, my 3GB/4GB signal strength is not so good. Should save a lot of battery when at home.

I am a teacher. The wifi signal in my building isn't great plus I don't need it anyway when I teach. I turn off pretty much everything during the times I teach. I have Tasker turn Wi-Fi back on for my lunch/plan period and turn off powersave mode. I used to lose 30%+ a day at work while not even touching my phone (awful signal primarily). I'm hoping this helps me keep it to 10% or less lost. I'll report back!

Turning wifi is a must if you leave it on it will always scan for new wifi and drain battery. I use signal towers to turn it on when at home and off when not, works rly good and no battery drain.
Any idea how to turn on the Blue Light Filter with Tasker? I'm using Autotools as well. Can't seem to get the setting values to adjust. I tried the system setting Blue_Light_Filter and set it to 1, but that didn't work.

I tried that but when I give Auto Input accessibility rights, my phone turns to a slug. Everything lags. It immediately stops when I remove accessibility rights. Do you have a similar issue or have you tried Auto Input on this phone yet?
