Yup... Airplane Mode Modifier on the Android Market to keep WiFi enabled while Airplane Mode is enabled (so you dont have to fiddle with it on restarts or anything like that)...
There are also other apps as well that provide the same function... just the one I use...

You don't need any app. In Airplane mode you can use both wireless and bluetooth.

Just figured that out too. It always shut off when I set airplane mode so I figured it was a done deal. WEEEE

True, but the app I mentioned and many others allow you to keep it on indefinitely! So you dont have to fiddle with BT/WiFi when you restart with airplane mode still enabled!
That way you can turn Airplane Mode on, and never have to ever turn it off or mess with WiFi/BT settings again!

I think there might be roms that are tablet only so no cell signal at all

I learned something today.
I always believed that airplane mode killed all wireless transmission...
That is of course not true..
Many thanks for the A.M. lesson! !....g

Hi, I downloaded the Airplane Mode Modifier app for my i717, 4.0.4. After I adjusted the settings to allow Wifi to stay on in airplane mode I looked at the battery consumption and it still indicated Cell Standby of 22% and Phone Idle of 14% of battery usage. Just wondered if I'm missing something. Seems to me that battery usage for these in Airplane mode should be 0%?

@gampbell
I'm just wondering what app you, or others, are using to check what is using your battery ?
I have Eliixar2 on my Nook tablet, but would prefer not to rely on just the one app like to check battery usage.

[Q] Auto airplane mode keeping wifi on, in gingerbread

Hello. I need a free app for automatically turn on/off airplane mode without turning off WIFI or Bluetooth. So, only the cell signal.
There are a lot of apps which can do it but all them turn off wifi too
Before, Tasker had this option, but in Gingerbread google has disabled it, so it cant do it
I have tried this: https://market.android.com/details?id=be1ay.flymode&feature=search_result
But dont work. So, any idea?
Thanks so much!
I do believe it's not possible to do it anymore, unless big changes in the kernel or the OS are made.

When you said there are a lot of apps can do it, can you list some out? Thanks.
aavan it should be possible because you can see this app: SwitchPro. This app do it through a widget so is not automatically, but works perfectly. So it is possible

Nothing exists right now. Although there are 3rd party apps that turn airplane mode on and off with a touch...the roots of actual airplane mode run much much deeper than that. It would take ALOT of work to create an app for that.

Keep WIFI on during sleep

I've been try to extend the life of my battery, and one of the things I have done is set the SETTINGS/WIFI/ADVANCED "keep WIFI on during sleep" to "never".
I make this change, but most times when I go back into the settings later on, it's changed back to "Always"
Anybody offer a clue as to why this might be happening?
Thanks.

no idea mate it shouldn't do as i have mine set to never and it stays like that, have you been flashing ROM's or anything like that maybe that could explain it!
No, not really.
The only thing I've done is rooted it. Apart from that, It's still got stock Samsung Rom on it.
Just checked again, and even tried setting it to "only when plugged in, but after 15 mins or so, it's back to "always" again.

For anyone else who might come across the same issue.
After doing a factory reset, and putting apps back on one at a time, I found out it was DoubleTwist Airsync, that was changing the "WIFI sleep" option.
Apparently, the developer knows this, but wants it to work that way.
So it's now gone for me
But you won't lose too much battery on an 7 hr sleep with the always on setting.
I go to sleep with my S3 on 98% and wake up with 92-94% battery left even with received messages from 3 email accounts and other notifications.

I keep mine on always. I lose 3% during an 8hr sleep and it'll automatically connect to my carrier data when my network is not in range. Sure beats turning it off and on a handful times a day.
Weird is that WiFi is active in either option you shoose during sleep. Even if you choose NEVER, open your battery use stats and you'll see that WiFi was active all the time during sleep. I cannot understand why is this issue so underrated here on XDA forums. Or is it some kind of misinterpreting from my side???

Yup afaik, choosing never will produce a wakelock to check the phone state and keeping it on will cause it to constantly scan even if connected to a network. Both choices will eat up battery.
I see many threads suggesting to just manually turn it off, preventing scanning, wakelocks and syncing all together.

So it is normal that if i choose Never in wifi sleep policy phone, i find the wifi always on in battery stats? This question is not so clear...
Is there any explanation of wifi toggles by author... Google?

I'm not so sure if you will see wifi in the battery stats as I think wifi processes are part of the Android system in settings >battery.

App that auto turns on airplane mode with loss of service?

My job is in a bad network area. I am looking for an app that auto toggles on airplane mode for a configurable duration after losing service. I worked a 12 hour and cell standby accounted for 33% of my battery drain. Any thoughts? I'm not a huge fan of tasker but I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks! I love having a helpful development community..
I'll be sure to hit thanks

Ok, good luck with finding a solution! Had bought tasker a while back but have not delved too deep into yet, was mostly all I could think of lol
Only thing I can think of is get a network extender so you don't have to put it on airplane mode that's expensive but it would solve the issue. Other than that if Tasker can do it I would use that.

I've been using Automate It for a couple of weeks now and believe it will suit your needs. After trying it out I upgraded to the pro version. Nice app and interface.
No affiliation, financial interest, blah, blah, blah. Just passing along a good one.
i use Automagic Automation, which is tasker but with a more user friendly interface. but it doesnt have as many features tasker. but i think i wouldnt be hard to set something up in that. i have a similar problem, and i use automagic to remedy it

[Q] Retasking Rezound as a Media Device

Have a unlocked Rezound that I'd like to use as a media device.
Why? Because the device continues to work well. I have a spare battery and chargers, holster and case. It can do wireless (802.11). Plus memory space as well as SD card capabilities.
I think if it was possible to disable the cell modem within the phone, battery life would be increased. Would love to find a ROM that minimizes the bloatware, allows you to disable the cell portion of the phone but maintain the device's other functionality.

I haven't seen a rom that lets you kill the cell radio all together and still keep wifi on. You can kill mobile data or put it in airplane mode when you don't need wifi either.
Install LTE on/off and turn off radio, WiFi can still be used, done.

@rjh20136 I'm partial to Sense ROMs and recommend Ineffable Deus for Sense 3.6, EclipticRez v9 (MHL fix included) for Sense 4. I use EclipticRez with either Sense 4 Car Mode display or XBMC app as a media device. I also use Poweramp and Google Music with ViPER4Android sound mod for car audio. Snuzzo's Funky kernel 3.7 version can underclock to 96 MHz to save battery more, try it out.

As Pmania said, toggle Airplane Mode first and then toggle WiFi back on by itself. I do this myself.
You can also access the Phone Info hidden settings on some ROMs by punching in "*#*#4636#*#*" on the stock dialer.
This panel controls global radio settings and can toggle the cell radio on or off independent of Airplane Mode. Do be careful not to select anything you're unsure of like changing regional frequencies.

To be fair, the grammar and lack of uppercase letters in the first post did not make it 100% clear you meant a specific app title rather than a generic toggle just for the LTE band. Mjones and likely others misunderstand at a glance.
I'm guessing the app is "LTE OnOFF - HTC Thunderbolt" by Cunning Logic. This app accesses that same hidden Phone Info panel accessed by the code I previously mentioned. Would recommend for the OP if the Airplane Mode trick is not preferable and the dialer code doesn't work on their particular ROM.
Other useful apps like Battery Monitor Widget can access the hidden settings too (BMW does it under the main menu > Tests button > Phone Information)

Actually it does.
I'll be trying this. Will back phone up just in case I ever have to press back into service but I see an S4 in my near future...
I second the *#*#4636#*#* method. There is a button in there to do exactly what you want.

Question about not using data

My Question is when I'm at work my reception is terrible So I use tasker to turn off wifi, data and location access but my battery still drains fast. Is it possible that apps are searching for away to find data access constantly and that's why I'm still experiencing power drain

If you normally have no bars in that area, your phone may be constantly searching for a signal. You might want to consider switching to airplane mode to stop that... Just be aware that you won't have call/text while in this mode. This will also keep mobile data off although WiFi can be turned on and used in airplane mode.
Another thing you can try is get the 'betterbatterystats' app from these forums and check for unwanted 'wakelocks' after it's been installed for a few hours or more.
Sidenote: Having location (gps) ticked on all the time shouldn't drain your battery, but turning off the internet (mobile data/Wifi) when not using it is a good idea as you've been doing.
