Hello,
I bought my wife a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for Christmas, and its been a pretty horrible experience thus far.
The device force closes constantly, and reboots every few minutes. We managed to make it all the way to the settings menu one time and clicked on the software update. It failed so we ended up updating through kies.
After the update, no change, force close city, constant reboots.
Is this at all normal?
I'm an experienced Android user and have been searching high and low for a solution, but i have no specific problem, simply nothing works.
I am considering returning it (hopefully the Amazon seller i bought it from won't give me any ****) if i can't get it fixed and getting another.
I just wanted to check here to see if there was some kind if common problem that could be remedied before hassling with a return.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I too, just got a Galaxy Tab 10.1 but I'm not having any of those problems you mentioned. My only grief is that the browser is really problematic but other than that, my experience has been pretty good so far.
Thats not normal its should be working fine out of the box.

Nope not normal...nor good
If I were you I'd return the tab and get a replacement. It's definitely not normal for it to be acting the way it does, everything should work out of the box (if it was just a FC here and there or a bit of lag or sth it would be understandable, but what you're experiencing is definitely not normal).
While it could be a simple software problem that you could fix with a new ROM/kernel/whatever, it could also be something else, so I'd definitely recommend getting a replacement to be on the safe side.
Thanks for the replies!
Yes i am returning it, the Amazon seller tried to charge a restocking fee, which sounded scammy to me (sell defective product, charge $60 to return it, sell again to someone else, wash, rinse, repeat), but Amazon came through in a big big way.
So we will be headed to the store soon to get a brand new one.
I look forward to participating in this forum!
Thanks!

And we hope you enjoy your stay
After getting the tab back (and one that works fine this time ) I'd recommend flashing a custom ROM/kernel to really make it fly. But as you said you're an experienced Android user, I'm sure you already know the basics - if you don't and can't find them on the forums, feel free to ask away ^_^
Am I doing something wrong???
If my phone isn't getting the sleep of death, it's keyboard lockups, call dialing delays, random restarts, soft bricks and being completely unresponsive...
I think I might buy a Palm Pixy or some other phone, what do you suggest???
I am rooted, but I never had any issues like this on my Droid X with nearly the same apps...
I'm getting fed up. I might switch to the SGII. I'm a big Motorola fan, but I'm really fed up.
If you guys give me any suggestions, let me know...
Sometimes I can't use this phone in an emergency... The other day I need to make an emergency call. I press send, and then the phone restarts...
I can't even listen to music in peace without a random restart... Maybe I'll get an iPod Touch....

Seriously...what are you doing to your phone...I don't how many you've gone through..like 5? It doesn't make ANY sense..no mass-produced product is THAT bad...QC probably accounts for .001% defects or less in a million...You should probably wipe your phone, factory reset it, SBF to stock, and switch it for SGS2 or Galaxy Nexus when it comes out.
If you look at my "Embrassed by Photon" thread, I am having issues that I have learned to live with BUT, I also had the Emergency phone call issue and could not use it.
Holding out for Samsung Galaxy Note!

dont think my POS Samsung Moment was that bad
Best bet is to go back to bone stock and run it for a while. If you have the same issues then it could most likely be your device.
What rom are you running? IMO cybiks cm7 and jokers 1.3 is the best combo. I have never had a random reboot once I got my undervolting levels tweaked right. It ran perfectly fine at the default voltages and I wanted to extend my battery life a bit.
You could also have a app that is going awry causing your device to overheat and seize.
Sent from my MoPho. All typos are the phones fault.
Yeah man, you are really screwing up somewhere. Everyone I have ever met in person with a Photon raves about how awesome it is.
I actually talked to a guy in line at the store the other day who had one - I noticed our oddly shaped device in a otter box on his hip and asked if it was Electrify or Photon (We Tennesseans tend to randomly chat with total strangers, like they are old pals.) - it was a Photon, he loved it.
I told him, if he wanted to love it more, read about Rooting and Roms. I wonder how that turned out for him.
I'm running pure stock and rooted. I rave about my Photon when it works right, trust me, it's awesome... Maybe my apps conflict with this device??? Cuz I never had any issues like this on my Droid X... I'm a huge Motorola fan, I don't want to leave you guys!!! Maybe I'll switch to a new device, but I will still be around, no matter what...
As for the Galaxy Nexus, other than LTE, and NFC, and ICS, the Photon beats it right out of the water!!!
I don't know if this is pure bad luck.... My apps nust conflict with the device.... I was running great with no issues until I installed avast! security... and for what avast! does, I'll take the repercussion of random reboots, if that is even the app causing random reboots....

I just meant if I needed to make an Emergency call, I couldn't at times, I didn't exactly mean 911.
Why is avast that important to you?

In my personal experience, it is the best antivirus and theft security application there is, but I am not sure that avast! is the issue, I'll uninstall it for a week and see if it stops... But, I have posted about 3 or 4 threads ranting about how this phone doesn't work sometimes.... I'm waiting for an LTE device that has 1080p, WiMax, and the specs our Photon with Tegra 3...

Again, I'm putting the phone back to Sprint Stock with a handful of my most common and trusted app's (BofA, Credit Union, MSNBC, Pandora and a few games) It's likely some s**t I put on it so I blame myself, not the phone.
Like I said, at the end of the day, its a phone. I could not call my boss for something the other day. It was freezing, then it went into bootstrap recovery.....by the time I removed OtterBox and battery, I was pissed (Matter fact, now I remember, It was 4:15AM Saturday!!!! I got pisssed because I had to get up off my a** and come in here!!)
Anyway, #1. Im 100% sure it's me, not Photon. #2. I'm still going for the Galaxy Note! The spec's on the Note are outrageous!!

Antivirus on android is pointless unless you use a pirated apps/market. The "sky is falling" articles about infection rates on android devices never give you actual numbers just "Up 427 Percent" Tom's Guide. If the original infection rate is 500 devices worldwide, even with a 400% increase you still have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning.
There are a couple of locate/remote wipe apps available on the market that do not include antivirus. That would be a better choice unless you are using pirated apps/market.
Here a simple troubleshooting guide to follow. It's not much fun but should eliminate a number of possible causes of the issues you are having.
Factory rest via settings
Flash stock SBF (do not root or unlock)
Do not install any apps for 24hrs to see if problem persists (if no then goto 4, if yes then replace device)
Install only one app a day and see if problem shows up. If so, start over. This time eliminate the suspect app from the list.
I run into this a number of times when servicing phones and very rarely does the issue show up again when the process is followed. It generally tends to be app conflicts or an app update is buggy.
I realize that it's probably my fault. And I blame the phone for not being able to handle the apps like my Droid X, that's all.
One more thing, there are a few virus apps on the market... I've run into a few...

Ok, here's the deal. I haven't been able to get a GPS lock in months. I've tried everything.
Right now I'm running stock 198_6. Rooted, unrooted, doesn't matter.
I've done several resets, I've wiped through recovery, I've wiped my internal storage, tried several SBF's etc.
I've been working on this problem for months and I'm finally frustrated enough to ask for help. No amount of googleing or flashing has helped thus far. On my old galaxy S phone, there was a GPS restore program that worked beautifully. I'm hoping for either a comparable program for my MOPHO or a way to COMPLETELY return to stock. Every file, every directory, every partition. Flashing SBF's isn't working.
Any help or insight would be amazing. Thanks in advance
Download gps status from the market see if you get any locks. You've already did all the steps needed but aren't working.
Again though clear all data including on the SD or just switch out to a empty one. factory data reset then sbf and do not restore your data when you log back into gmail. It could be a app conflicting with the GPS you never know.
Try out the rocko rom he has a locked version now so try it out and see if that helps
I tried gps status and a couple others, it won't even see a satellite, much less get a lock. Trying the long road workaround for alien with 4g, see what happens. Thanks for the advice, I didn't think about a new sd. I'll give that a shot.

I have a question to ask you do you have the GPS turned on in settings? If so have you ever dropped your phone? Because the only time I've had problems was when GPS wasn't Turned on. I'm sure that was the first thing you looked at but it can be overlooked
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Though I do appreciate your input, I can absolutely assure you after working on this issue for a long time, the gps is not turned off. Besides, it would just turn back in after a wipe.
I did drop my phone once as I got out of the car, but I keep it in an otter box commuter case and the fall from the seat of my tC didn't hurt it.

How long are you waiting for a lock? I have seen some devices take quite a while (15 mins) to lock after being moved a long way from where the last fix was stored. I am thinking that the almanac or ephemeris data may be corrupt for some reason.
Did you try the agps assistance within GPS status?
Is your date and time set correctly?
Do your other sensors work correctly in the GPS status app? Gforce and rotation?
Do you have an absolutely clear view of the sky at a wide angle?
Is there anything transmitting withinin the 1227.6—1575.42MHz range nearby? It doesn't even need to be that close to that frequency range as a strong VHF (30-300 MHz) can overpower a GPS signal if the transmitting station is radiating enough Watts. Imagine the emi nightmare it is packing radios in the HF VHF shf and uhf spectrum on a boat mast. Along with GPS, RADAR, DirecTV and such.
I believe that you have one of the following:
1. EMI from a rogue emitter.
2. Corrupt almanac/ephemeris/date and time
3. Broken GPS hardware inside the device.
Sent from my MoPho. All typos are the phones fault.
Thanks for the info. It's not an issue with interference as I've tried it over 100 miles from home.
So, is there a way to fix the almanac info?

F.Y.I., I just got GPS Test from the Market. I like the Globe View where it shows exactly where each one is!
Hmm as someone said before it can take time to get a lock and it can be a hardware problem too did you drop it recently or has it been exposed to any big amount of pressure? That can be a problem.

Unfortunately it's sounding like you may have to bring it in and have it checked out by a phone tech. It definitely sounds like a hardware issue. If it's still under warranty then you're in luck.
In case you have the warranty just make sure to unroot and be on stock.Otherwise they won't accept it.

Yeah, it's under warranty and I had it unrooted. The sprint store wanted to charge me $35. I laughed and left. I figure I'll port the number to my verizon phone and send it in to Moto. I considered looking for a GS2, but I'm not spending more money on wimax phones since sprint will be converting to LTE.

Does anyone else use PayPal Here on their Galaxy Note? I received the reader, the phone recognizes it, but it won't read the credit card when it's swiped. I called PayPal, they said my device should work. They're sending me another reader. Just curious if anyone has used it.
Thanks!
I use PayPal, but through the browser.
This is the credit card reader that PayPal sends you so that you can accept credit card payments from people you sell stuff too.
Oh, sorry. I used the competition's reader successfully.
I haven't used the PayPal reader system but I used the square system and worked great. Helped run a fundraiser and was selling things. People LOVED using the stylus to sign for their stuff. If the PayPal one is anything like square, it'll run great

But the 2.75% is kind of pricey. What is Google's price?
It kinda is but I was with another cc processing company that charged 2.25% but with a minimum of $25. So if you didn't do any business, you still had to pay $25. All I know is 2.75% isn't that much when you only use it once in a while. For an actual business, I probably wouldn't use square or PayPal

Does Google offer a service like this?
If you use it alot intuit is best. You can pay a monthly fee of $13 then only 1.75% or its 2.75% and no monthly fee. Guess that's the going rate. Haven't used PayPal here but there are a lot of complaints in the review section saying it doesn't work or crashes often.
I'm helping a friend that has the same issue. Here's what I've tried:
-reader in a another Note, same results
-reader in a razr maxx, works fine
-3rd party audio control apps to boost volume, doesn't help
-shaved the plastic around the jack on the paypal here reader to hopefully make better contact in the phone, doesn't help
My next thought was to root the phone and spend $3.50 on a app called Voodoo Sound Plus in the Play Store that requires root. Supposedly, it's made specifically for the audio chip control in Galaxy phones but I don't see the I1717 listed.
If that doesn't work, I might try a 3rd party ROM.
Either way, it's frustrating. Yes I could get a Square for him but Paypal's pro's outweigh Square in our opinion..
Keep me posted if anyone get's it to work. I'll do the same!

Did anyone actually figure out the root of the issue? If a rom change fixed it than obviously its something software based that could be added to all roms.
I am on AOKP JB M1 on a Galaxy Nexus and paypal reader is not working. I haven't tried my square reader yet on this phone. I'll try that.
Anyways I would love it if someone could find out what exactly is the difference in roms that's causing this?
Don't know what specifically causes it. I do know that my Note 2 didn't work on stock ROM.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
Hmm That is interesting. I wonder if it's something a bit deeper in the OS that is causing it. If a stock rom doesnt work but a custom one does, that's interesting.
Also, I tested my square card reader on here and it works fine.
I'm not switching to CM10 as I just have too much that I enjoy in AOKP. but I'm going to see if their devs have any idea whats going on here. Maybe it will work on the 4.2 builds.
anyone happen to know of a list of android devices that work with it? the FAQ that paypal website has is pretty terrible. it basically just says "try it and see if it works!"
what about the people (like me) who want to buy a device specifically for this? i'm not too keen on buying an apple i-anything just for this.

thoughts??
"A follow-up report from Bloomberg claims that Renjie refused access to Samsung investigators, who want to verify his claims."
Sounds suspicious to me. He HAS to be hiding something.
Also,
"In reality this is an unverified report and it’s likely to stay that way if Renjie doesn’t cooperate. But the damage is done."
So even the article is saying this may or may not be a true case. The article doesn't seem to be reporting that a fire has broken out on a new device, but rather that despite the recall being almost done, Samsung is still dealing with issues such as potentially false claims of combusting Note7s.

Mine too, and my opinion of Samsung hasn't changed because of any of this. It was responsible of them to recall the phones after only (at the start) 35 incidences out of millions. They did the recall without having to be told to by a government agency.
My only complaint was how unorganized ATT was about it all. At least in my town.
Sad that people want to take advantage of the situation, and that the media blew stuff out of proportion. Then again, people were taking advantage of 9/11 in order to make a quick buck too.

My replacement ran great for a while, but now it is raining battery very fast. Not sure what changed, but it barely made it through the day today and it had to go a full 36 hrs easy.
If anything I am taking extra care to use solid, well reviewed accessories for the phone and Samsung branded when ever possible. That's it, I love the phone, it charges cool, even when I quick charge, battery last forever, and it's IP68 rating has opened so many opportunities where I would have left my phone at home.
