PayPal Here - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Does anyone else use PayPal Here on their Galaxy Note? I received the reader, the phone recognizes it, but it won't read the credit card when it's swiped. I called PayPal, they said my device should work. They're sending me another reader. Just curious if anyone has used it.
Thanks!

I use PayPal, but through the browser.

This is the credit card reader that PayPal sends you so that you can accept credit card payments from people you sell stuff too.

Oh, sorry. I used the competition's reader successfully.

I haven't used the PayPal reader system but I used the square system and worked great. Helped run a fundraiser and was selling things. People LOVED using the stylus to sign for their stuff. If the PayPal one is anything like square, it'll run great

But the 2.75% is kind of pricey. What is Google's price?

It kinda is but I was with another cc processing company that charged 2.25% but with a minimum of $25. So if you didn't do any business, you still had to pay $25. All I know is 2.75% isn't that much when you only use it once in a while. For an actual business, I probably wouldn't use square or PayPal

Does Google offer a service like this?

If you use it alot intuit is best. You can pay a monthly fee of $13 then only 1.75% or its 2.75% and no monthly fee. Guess that's the going rate. Haven't used PayPal here but there are a lot of complaints in the review section saying it doesn't work or crashes often.

I'm helping a friend that has the same issue. Here's what I've tried:
-reader in a another Note, same results
-reader in a razr maxx, works fine
-3rd party audio control apps to boost volume, doesn't help
-shaved the plastic around the jack on the paypal here reader to hopefully make better contact in the phone, doesn't help
My next thought was to root the phone and spend $3.50 on a app called Voodoo Sound Plus in the Play Store that requires root. Supposedly, it's made specifically for the audio chip control in Galaxy phones but I don't see the I1717 listed.
If that doesn't work, I might try a 3rd party ROM.
Either way, it's frustrating. Yes I could get a Square for him but Paypal's pro's outweigh Square in our opinion..
Keep me posted if anyone get's it to work. I'll do the same!

My phone is rooted and it still does not work. I went and picked up a Square reader and signed up for their service. It works just fine.
What do you like about PayPay over Square?
I also tried using the Square reader with the PayPal app, but it doesn't work. I also tried the PayPal reader with the Square app, but that didn't work either.

after it was rooted, did you try anything like voodoo plus for audio?

Silly question, but does the square reader work for PayPal or is there something in the readers that the software app detects?

Did anyone actually figure out the root of the issue? If a rom change fixed it than obviously its something software based that could be added to all roms.
I am on AOKP JB M1 on a Galaxy Nexus and paypal reader is not working. I haven't tried my square reader yet on this phone. I'll try that.
Anyways I would love it if someone could find out what exactly is the difference in roms that's causing this?

Don't know what specifically causes it. I do know that my Note 2 didn't work on stock ROM.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2

Hmm That is interesting. I wonder if it's something a bit deeper in the OS that is causing it. If a stock rom doesnt work but a custom one does, that's interesting.
Also, I tested my square card reader on here and it works fine.
I'm not switching to CM10 as I just have too much that I enjoy in AOKP. but I'm going to see if their devs have any idea whats going on here. Maybe it will work on the 4.2 builds.

anyone happen to know of a list of android devices that work with it? the FAQ that paypal website has is pretty terrible. it basically just says "try it and see if it works!"
what about the people (like me) who want to buy a device specifically for this? i'm not too keen on buying an apple i-anything just for this.

NFC?

I'm just wondering what the prognosis is on NFC for the Thunderbolt?
Are we actually getting it? Is there a possibility of it getting leaked?
We would need the NFC hardware in our phones before we could use the NFC software.

Oh I thought we had it. I could have sworn I saw somewhere that said we did. Haha. Damn.
If NFC is really important to you, you should be able to purchase a replacement microSD with an imbedded NFC chip. Not sure how much a 32GB card will be, however.
The biggest I could find (so far) was 8gb.
If you just want to do the Google Wallet thing, they are supposed to be making stickers that you can stick inside your battery cover (or case) to do the swipe-purchase. It doesn't give you the flexibility, or tie into the Google Wallet app, but it is better than nothing...maybe...
Unfortunately I don't think this will take off. I was excited about wave and that had the same fate.

On a phone, it takes more than an rfid reader to access it because it's not a dumb chip (opposed to say rfid on a credit card). Payments are encrypted and transmitted between the phone and the reader as well so man in the middle attacks aren't going to happen.
Please dont spread FUD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear,_uncertainty_and_doubt without citing sources. Only issues with rfid (which is has nothing more in common with nfc other than they share the same frequency) being read so far are on crappy implementations such as gas passes with exxon and other stations and toll passes. The proper way for phones to do payments is a one time key that's only good for a transaction.
There are other things nfc is good for besides payments as well (using it in tandem with bluetooth)

http://mobisocial.stanford.edu/img/nfc-poker.jpg (one example)
This isnt exactly nfc, since it's using an rfid tag to give bluetooth connection details, but it works on non hardware enabled nfc devices:

A few questions before I buy

So I've done some searching and reading here lately, and I have just a few questions before I finally make this leap. I'm ecstatic that the BL is finally unlocked. This is great!
First, I do some traveling and I love being able to plug a device in to a hotel TV and get decent video quality. Is the multimedia dock the only way to allow this? Specifically, I'm looking at streaming Netflix or Hulu. I usually don't travel with DVDs on my storage card, but I suppose I can if that's the only option here.
Second, how does anyone with the LapDock like it? I personally see myself using this quite a bit, as it would make life easier at work with a larger interface and full keyboard. Do you find it too cumbersome to travel with? Ideal when you'll be in one place for longer periods of time?
How's the video chat capability? With some travel, I like to be able to call my son when on the road. Does the front cam give decent quality?
Is there any video chat capability with the lapdock? I don't see a cam on the front of it, so I'm curious if the USB ports are usable with a webcam. This would also be ideal for the quick video conferences for work.
I've been waiting and waiting for something better to come along. However, a refurbed Atrix for $50, and a refurbed lapdock for $175 is pretty tough to pass up. Both for $225...or brand new for $300 after rebate.
Thanks for any help and insight.

AFAIK ther´s no cam in the dock but with the hdmi mirroring you can video chat on a tv, i dont know if you can plug in a webcam but with full ubuntu it should be possible
My advice: BUY IT
i dont think hdmi mirroring or webtop via hdmi is working YET in 2.3.4, but in 1.8.3 you are golden on both. with full ubuntu, there is no reason you couldnt use a webcam with the lapdock that i can think of, its essentially a computer, so as long as linux drivers are available for whichever webcam you choose to use, it should work.
Awesome! Thanks guys. Now to pull the trigger and get this thing ordered.
Just want to give my input on the lapdock. Its incredibly thin. and its a nice size. I picked up a refurbished unit from At&t for about 175.
Charges your phone too. I slapped debian on it, and it runs really nice!

Great to hear! I've been thinking about putting the full distro on there as well. I think this is a great concept and a fantastic start, even if there are some bugs/issues/features to address. I think this basic function and form will be around for a while, or at least I hope so.
On the dock, I'm assuming you've addressed the APN issue to take a grandfathered unlimited plan? That's my biggest concern: keeping unlimited data and being able to use webtop. I've read the dev forum, and it seems no one is having any issues with this, which is great.
I have unlimited. You just need to apply the tethering hack found in the dev forum, and you'll be able to keep your unlimited data!
By the way, if you're scared of receiving a bad refurbished dock, don't be. My dock looks and acts brand new

I've had pretty good luck with the refurbs before. Mine have always been brand new, but I've bought refurbs for others, and they've been flawless. I was a bit worried with the Atrix, but when I talked to my sales guy the other day he was telling me about 80% of the docks he sells are returned within 30 days. That gave me the idea to look at refurbs, and 175 isn't bad!
You'll have to get it online for the discount I believe. Free shipping too.

Yeah, that's usually how the refurbs work. I was just saying I got the idea from the salesman who said he's seen a lot returned. Now to just make sure they don't change my data plan That's always easier in the store!

Got one worth mine. Of course it's still wrapped and will stay sitting there
Maybe I should call verizon and say since I did not get a manual with my Galaxy Note 2 do I get a free pair of headphones instead?
I only got a table leg leveler with mine. No idea!
The Verizon Note 2 does not come with a physical manual. It has the following physical documents:
- Star Here (and Comienza Aqui, the Start Here guide in Spanish)
- Product Safety & Warranty Information
- Global Support Calling Card
- Consumer Information About Radio Frequency Emissions & Responsible Driving
- Important Consumer Information
I have a feeling that people who are saying they received a manual are referring to one (or all) of those, but none of those are actual device user manuals though (at least in the sense that the OP is referring to). The actual user manual is 216 pages long. Verizon (and other carriers) have been cutting back on the included documentation with devices for a little while now.
If you want the actual user manual, you have to download it. It can be found on Samsung's support website for the Verizon Note 2.

This is the one phone I could see shipping it as a PDF file included would make total sense. it fits the usage.
Not shipping earbuds/mic is just tacky given the price. You'll definitely be using those on this thing.
Ya but the odd thing using headphones today whenever I got a text it would play through the speakers not through the headphones

Square credit card reader?

Does anybody use the Square credit card reader with the Z Ultra? It doesn't seem to be working, the app says it can't read the card no matter how many times you swipe. The same card works on the first swipe on my wife's Note 3. The reader and app used to work fine on my old Xperia Z, just not the Ultra.
I have rooted the Ultra, could that be the problem?
Any feedback would be great, as I use the Square reader for my business from time to time.
Thanks

Okay, so i just googled "Square reader not working on android" and it looks like a lot of people with a lot of different devices can't get it working. Not sure if it's Square's responsibility or Sony's since i've read one thing here and another there, so i'm not sure. I guess you can start by emailing Square and see what they say.
I use a card reader that I got from First Data and that doesn't work either. called the company and they gave me some bs answers and said it's a faulty headphone jack which I don't believe to be is the case. also tried it with the PayPal here card reader and no luck.

It might look like it's the OEM's fault. The jacks are fine, but they haven't implemented support for these "things". I don't know if a software update would enable this or if it's hardware. This is what i'm getting after googling, so it might be completely wrong, but a lot of LG, Motorola and HTC users are facing the same issue.
You guys should go to Sony's site and use the support chat and ask if they know anything about it. It's way quicker than emailing.

called Sony and they said that they've never heard of those kinds of devices and to make sure they are compatible with the correct TRRS standard version of headphone jack used. since Sony and Apple use the CTIA standard, that's not the problem since they worked on my iPhone. so now I'm back at square one. maybe someone else had a better idea. lol

Common solutions to card reader issues
I recently had issues getting my card reader to work with my Xperia z1s. I went through lots of different channels, and finally decided that maybe just updating my app would fix the issue. Lo and behold, it did. Another thing to keep in mind is that the device uses your phone's audio function. If audio is off or turned down at all, the reader may not work.
Hope that helps.
Both old blue and new black PayPal Here readers don't work on Z Ultra (Android OS 4.4.4).
PayPal Here says Card Reader Connected, but no matter how I swipe the card, nothing happens.
Haven't upgraded to Android OS 5, but both readers works fine on Nexus 7 (Android OS 5.1) and Samsung Note Edge (Android OS 4.4.4).
Just upgrade my ZU to v5.1.1 recently, and PayPal black reader works.

IR Remote App

Hi all, I'm sure not everyone uses the IR blaster and the quick remote app but here's to those who use it daily.
The LG quick remote app, isn't really that quick - no widget, or quick access from your homescreen, afaik. Other apps I use to find handy was the anymote but somehow, it shows that the LG v20 is unable to learn new codes, which is totally false since the LG app is able to do that.
Does anyone have a better recommendation of the app they use? Feel free to chip in please!

Galaxy remote looks pretty sleek! Fingers crossed it learns code on the v20 too!
I use anymote from the play store. Out of all I've tried, it's the best one so far
I'm definitely one of those who use the IR Blaster daily and it was a major factor in getting the v20, but unfortunately from what I've read LG doesn't follow standard IR protocols so most universal apps claim to not support LG devices. I used to use Smart Remote (which eventually turned into Anymote) and none of my devices work with it so can't use it, and I haven't tried peel yet but I have tried a lot of other different IR apps and the couple that actually worked seemed to be spotty at best. I was really disappointed that I can't use Anymote because I loved the way I had it setup and I've been forced to use quick remote which like the OP said basically sucks, so I'm really hoping someone figures something out or is able to find a universal app that works the way it should with this phone.

Ok thanks for the info I'll definitely give it shot and post my results whenever I get a chance. I was also going to edit my previous post because I came across a decent IR app on the Play store I had never heard of before called "Sure", and I haven't had a chance to see if recording is available or not and if it works or if includes any widgets yet. I can say it does cover a huge amount of devices and all of the ones I've tried so far work exactly like they should, I only had a few minutes to mess with it this afternoon but so far it seems like a pretty decent app.

and i'll be Sure to take a look at that too. Haven't had time to tinker with the app yet. Yeah, anymote needs to have the alternate ir control thing on for it to work.
another thing is the blaster's ranges seems to be intermittent at times, or perhaps just a very narrow direct pointing field. most times it has to be direct for the commands to work.
keep them coming!

another thing is the blaster's ranges seems to be intermittent at times, or perhaps just a very narrow direct pointing field. most times it has to be direct for the commands to work.
keep them coming!

I actually went ahead and bought that Galaxy Universal app and I have to say it's the bees knees lol, so I hate to say it but I "Sure" did get rid of it because Galaxy just blows it out of the water and then some. Like you said before though it never hurts to have options though ?

Hi all, I'm sure not everyone uses the IR blaster and the quick remote app but here's to those who use it daily.
The LG quick remote app, isn't really that quick - no widget, or quick access from your homescreen, afaik. Other apps I use to find handy was the anymote but somehow, it shows that the LG v20 is unable to learn new codes, which is totally false since the LG app is able to do that.
Does anyone have a better recommendation of the app they use? Feel free to chip in please!

It does have a widget.

I could have sworn I saw it in widgets. I just checked and it's not there.
I found this though.

Just from using for 2 days I can already completely agree with you on that! What really blew me away was the ability to create a custom button that you can manually add the hex or decimal ir code to! I've had this hdmi switch that I got a long time ago (and of course it was missing the remote) that I had all but given up on because I could never find it listed as a device on any of the apps I've tried, and when I figured out you could manually enter ir hex codes with Galaxy I looked it up online and found them.. and then Bob's your uncle I can control it with my phone now! I'm sure there are probably other apps that also let you manually add the ir codes, but that along with all of the customization options and being able to add widgets makes Galaxy the best one imo too!

haha, yeah. on that note, i must say the quick bulletin doesn't really serve much use. i miss the old days of my HTC one with the quick feed and integration.
i'm currently trying to figure out how to decode the ir commands since galaxy does not learn the codes or have the codes to my devices. T__T

i've been raking the net for codes for my panasonic wall fan, and this europace casement air-conditioning unit.
hitting a stump there, if only i could figure out how to rip those codes off the different apps.
I like anymote the best been using it since my note 2

Have you tried using the code scan feature that Galaxy has to see if it finds it? I'm kind of in the same boat with an oscillating floor fan that I have in my room, and after 2 days of searching online I finally emailed the Galaxy devs last night to see if they could send me the code. I was surprised because they actually responded pretty quickly and they suggested I try the scan option and see if it finds it (I knew it was there but I completely forgot to try it so as soon as I get home from work I'm going to give it a shot), and they said if that doesn't work then they should be able to find the code I need and send it to me. So I have to say Galaxy Universal was worth every penny and I can't say enough good things about it!
As far as ripping codes off of other apps that would be awesome and yeah I wouldn't even know where to begin. One thing I've been wondering ever since I found out quick remote can record IR codes (meaning that our IR blasters can also receive), is if it would be possible for someone to create an app that could show the IR hex codes of whatever remotes you point at it because that would be forkin awesome. I have no idea what the limitations are though I just figured if quick remote can duplicate an IR code from another remote, you'd think it would at least be possible to create an app that can display the code info instead of just duplicating it. Anyway hope you get it figured out and if I'm able to get mine working I'll post the results.
