IceCream Sandwich love? - Motorola Photon 4G

Hey guys....
Im wondering if Motorola Photon 4G is getting IceCream Sandwich.... Anyone knows?

as the phone been out for longer than 18 months? nope...means we are probbly going to get it, but since the OS still isnt even officially out, no one knows for sure

At this point I would say any phone that has the hardware requirements will get it. So the Photon should.

Agreed. It may take a little while, but I'm pretty sure we'll get it. I'm guessing late Q1, 2012.

id say watch here, http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/18/motorolas-faster-thinner-smarter-stronger-event-liveblog/
maybe they will mention something?
also depending on how long for source to drop, mrinehart may have to stop on cm7 and get cm9 working

which we could get and updated UI. When I first heard about the RAZR I thought wtf why are they going back in time lol Now that I see it I think its sick

We can probably port it to the photon the only thing is 4g probably won't work unless we use a different base

That's what i am thinking. It will probably take a while for us to get a build of it. Do you think with google aquiring Moto Mobility we might get an OS update a bit sooner? I'm sure devs at motorola already have a copy of ICS to mess around with.

Well I was referring to the battery and data manager. These phones are vanilla android with a few moto tweeks unlike the competitors.
We would most likely get updates faster unless moto decides to hold **** back. Compared to the epic(which a majority of us came from) we have gotten a metric ton of updates within this 2 month time frame

Motorola announced today that the Razr will get ICS "early 2012", so I'm thinking we'll get it around the same time, or a little after...

Hell, I might switch to the Prime (I know they took it out, but I'm still calling it that) too, but that means I can keep my Mo-Pho since I'll have to switch carriers...

I am very happy with my mopho running GB 2.3.4, a lot better than my old nexus s 4g with 2.3.7. so at this point I can wait for ICS, I don't need it.

I was thinking the same thing, and from what I heard it a total makeover, like XP and Windows 7, so I likely would not like it anyway. Love my Photon just like it is.

It is best to say from windows vista to windows 7! IMO! And better! Windows 7 to windows 8. The only change is the UI! and I don't like.

I don't mean to hate. But the razor is now moto's baby going foward and that's means the chances of the photon getting ics before a year from now is slim to none. Zip, zerro.
The only phones getting ics quick are the nexus phones and and phones with great dev support like the evo 3d and sensation. The ports have already started on them.
The razor does look mad sexy though, I like it.

They want you to buy new phones

[Q] Galaxy Nexus....get it or wait for ICS on the MoPho

Just wondering should I get the Galaxy Nexus which is really nice especially running ICS but I really love my MoPho ...what do you guys think? Should I wait for ICS on my MoPho or get the GN ?
Phone looks awesome but it wont drop until november. And its probably a vzw exclusive for the time being. They didnt comment much on carriers at the release.

This. And as far as trying to build out the brand, it was a poor move to put this into the hands of Verizon the same day the Razr was announced. It sucks because of the fact that data is moving into the cloud, access $80 per 5 piece. I'll never go back to Verizon and the MoPho is a device I can stick with for awhile because the communications and GPS functioning on the device is great.

Ummm, probably because he wants some opinions and thoughts to help with his decision!!
im hearing a lot of speculation of sprint getting it mid q1 next year (just in time to announce their first LTE sites) at which point i will be selling my gf's soul to get one
(dont worry she doesnt actually have a soul.. )
I love everything about the Galaxy Nexus and am really tempted to upgrade. But two things threw me off:
- exclusive to Verizon. What the heck. What happened to the promise to be open and not stick to one carrier? That was just last year when they released the Nexus S!
- Likely to be CDMA only. As a student from Hong Kong that goes back every half year, I need my GSM connectivity on my Photon.
Now that Google bought Motorola, I have high hopes that they will bring ICS to Photon.

the international version is gsm and carrier unlocked, just the same as the previous nexus. if you are on tmo or att that version will work fine
verizon exclusive is only until sprint gets lte set up. sprint just bought a CRAPLOAD of iphones and is subsidzing them at a horrible cost to themselves. once they have the capital and lte networks up i expect to see a sprint version
*cries* Yeah and I wish they hadn't done so now they are so cash strapped it'll be a while before we see improvements around here? :/

I was asking everyone for their opinions just to get some idea of what I should do...I would wait for sprint to get the device because I used to work for Verizon and they are full of **** over there but I am not sure about the devices as a whole...things have been moving really slow over here and I give much thanks and props to the guys that have been developing over here but I am used to flashing at will without all of the problems with 4g wifi etc...I get bored easily so I am already looking for my next device but when I can flash at will it keeps my current device fresh and new for me and I don't get bored with it as fast....if I can get ICS in the next couple of Weeks thru a leak our something I will be good until upgrade time I guess
Motorola is probably working on it but a release of ics won't be until march April maybe.. It won't come overnight but in time...

Galaxy Nexus antenna sucks. I miss the RAZR

Reception sucks on the Galaxy Nexus. The RAZR was MUCH better at finding and holding 3G and 4G signals. I regret returning it.
I should have known the Koreans can't engineer a good fvcking radio.
what about battery life comparison?
I called that one! Lol...
Big Red should let you exchange back to the RAZR if the Nexus can't hold a signal, no?
My tab's Flyer than yours! Unless this is posted in a Flyer thread, then it's just as Flyer...

Maybe you got a Canadian version?
http://www.androidcentral.com/app-t...-your-galaxy-nexus-cant-tell-you-whether-care
Also, are you still on 4.0.1? There was a small OTA pushed to fix bugs (4.0.2, 4.0.3 coming soon). Might fix the reception if you haven't already updated. Might be a good idea to check manually, just in case.

Battery life did seem better on the RAZR during the few days I had it. I guess maybe if your antenna and radio are strong, you're gonna use less juice to communicate.
ICS was over-hyped. The main reason I returned the RAZR was so that I could swap batteries. The same reason I didn't get the iPhone.
Verizon explicitly told me that they only allow 1 exchange in the 14 days. True or False?
yes they have a policy that says one exchange within the exchange period.

That might be true for voluntary exchanges, but if the phone's crap, it's crap, and with some persistence, and enough escalation requests you can eventually get what you want. After getting us 3 phones, an OtterBox case, and a microwave for only $40 from Best Buy, my fiancée taught me that.
If it's worth your time, you can get it done!

Phones with hardware buttons don't get the on-screen buttons.
I just switched to Verizon from Sprint today (bad issues with my wife's phone) and got a GN. The salesman at my store told me that he'd had the RAZR and the battery life sucked; he likes his Nexus much better.
I've been going back and forth because I hear really nice things about the RAZR, but I came from the NS4G so it seemed like a logical progression to get the GN. Plus, I really do love ICS.

If it's anything like the Flyer (or any other Honeycomb upgrades) the physical buttons will cease to function, and only screen buttons will work, but who knows with ICS.

Who knows. Battery reports are always so subjective; it's hard to get a good feel for how it goes without just trying it for yourself.
I'll likely end up sticking with my Nexus because I'm a Google whore and this is their flagship phone now. I got a good deal on an extended battery so if it comes to it I'll have that.
As far as the buttons go, the Nexus S got the OTA for ICS and the buttons on the phone kept working though some of their functions changed. No on-screen buttons on that bad boy. However, the screen is smaller so that may be why they chose that implementation. Time will tell.

That's funny. I just bought a RAZR today and when I was comparing it to the GN the back of the GN popped off. I decided that a better radio and better build quality is more important that ICS (which we'll get anyway) and a super sweet screen.

Droid x2 users help me pick a new phone

I hope this is ok to post. I came across this promotion where Verizon is willing to let me upgrade early to a 4g phone. I'm asking here cause I've followed this forum for a while and I trust advice from the regular posters here!
I don't think I want to go the Motorola route this time cause of the locked bootloader issue. Im thinking about the rezound, spectrum, or nexus.
The rezound sounds appealing now because of the unlocked bootloader. I would go for a nexus but its more expensive plus I need HDMI. (The rezound is currently $99) I use it daily. The nexus is lacking in accessories big time. So can I get some opinions from my fellow X2 users?

I've been kind of looking at upgrades too. I keep holding off just because the X2 is just beginning to get interesting. At least in my book. That said, I've been looking at the Rezound and Nexus too. They both have their minuses (like all phones) but if I do upgrade, I'm leaning toward the Rezound. One thing about the Rezound though, if you want to use HDMI, you have to buy an adapter for it. It doesn't have a dedicated port for it. Rather, it uses the USB port and for that to work, you have to buy the adapter. One more thing you need to buy but for me, it's not that big of a deal.
Spend some time reading in the forums here for the phones you are interested in and you'll get an idea of what's best for you. If you see a thread in the Rezound or Nexus forum titled something like, Rezound or Nexus, which one?, ignore them. Well, don't ignore them but remember if you're in a Rezound forum and ask that question, there's not much doubt about the way they are going to push you. Same goes for the same question in the Nexus forum. Anyway, spend some time in those forums and you'll get more of a feel for which phone is right for you.
Like I said, I've settled on the Rezound myself. However, I'm holding off to see what comes next for the X2. At least for a bit.
Whatever the case, my next phone won't be a Motorola. It's a shame too. Love their hardware. I don't think they take second to anybody else in the department but I'm kind of tired of being locked out of full usage of a phone that I bought and paid for. Just my two cents worth.

I agree..if Motorola does unlock bootloaders I would definitely be interested in raze maxx or whatever Motorola releases next. Only thing is the rezound is only 99 dollars so that's kind of hard to pass up. I'm not sure that a new CEO is going to make a difference in locked bootlaloaders though. I mean it definitely could for sure, but I think that decision goes a lot further then just one person. But again if the person who runs the place wants it done it would be done

the thing I liked in the article I read bout the ceo switch was "he isn't afraid to roll up his sleeves and put in work" hopefully that means he will make some changes and do things instead of sitting around just collecting fat stacks lol...
and robocuff, I guess im one of the few who thinks 32gb is plenty of space lol...if I had a 4g phone like that I also wouldn't mind storing pretty much all my music and pics in "cloud" form. which would mean I would probly never even fill up HALF that 32gb....and I've convinced myself that the system not having to read an external memory source would speed up how the phone performs ....probly doesn't make a difference tho lol

Well, ash, I did say it wasn't a deal breaker. Anyway, I guess I'd just prefer an sd card if I can have one. I wouldn't rule out the Nexus just because of that. Just from what I read so far, the Rezound seems to be the way I want to lean right now.

I thought I'd miss the SD card myself. Now that there are all of these cloud services with huge free GB allotments, I can't imagine needing more than 32 gigs on my nexus. When I mod my wife's DX2, I'm frustrated to have everything separated.
I'd say between the nexus and Rezound, you can't make a wrong choice. They're both top phones. The only thing the nexus has in my book is development support. This is the og droid all over again. This thing will be around for a loooooong time.

was just screwing wit ya...in actuality, id prolly fill that 32gb up quick lol
from what I've heard the rezound is solid, plus you'll be getting ics apparently by summer officially...I was highly considering the rezound also....but a certain dev getting nexus makes me.lean that way more
Well, I'm not really sure yet either. I feel like jumping to another but like I said before, things are just getting interesting here. Besides, I think of all the extras I have and it all works great together and, well, I don't know. If I do jump it'll probably be the Rezound for me though. I'll sit on it for a bit. I'm a bowhunter. I have lots of patience.

I'm excited that I get to play with my Nexus but also stick around the DX2 scene. DZK is doing some great stuff around here.

I saw a docking station for the nexus today and it was 90 dollars and didn't have an HDMI port. I guess you have to use an adapter for the USB is what someone mentioned?

Is this early upgrade deal just for you or a verizon thing. I'm guessing just for you lol since verizon hates me.

Tired of waiting for ics....

Anyone else sick of waiting for this mythical unicorn we call ics.
I know, I know, the longer the wait the better. I entirely agree, just venting.....

Not really. It will be nice, but I'm enjoying the phone as it is. I was using ICS roms on my dinc until I switched, so I know what to look forward to, but it was also a big laggy and rebooted a lot, so I have yet to enjoy a polished, official release on new hardware.

Well if only there were no leaked ics, we wouldnt feel this way. Lets talk about ios 5. It didnt have any leaked os but users managed to wait for more than a year. It seems that when we know there is a better stuff, we still wanted more... and fast

You're comparing the average iPhone users to the most informed Android users. The average Android user has never even heard of Ice Cream Sandwich.
I do think it is ridiculous that the RAZR was advertised as "ICS upgradeable," and six months later there is still no official date set for release. I don't understand how Motorola even got away with advertising the phone that way. They should have said "Gingerbread, with the possibility that before your contract is up in two years there may be an update to ICS."
I've got ICS. It's amazing.
but I'm stuck like a fat kid in a tight hallway.

I'm running the OG leak, and as much as I love it, it's starting to act up... I didn't pull the trigger on the 84 or 85 leaks, so hopefully in a couple of weeks, I'll be able to update to official ICS yumminess!

Ummm... all signs point to ICS this month. 3 or 4 weeks out.
And to all who are claiming they'll sell their phones, I'll give the same response I did over in the Acer Iconia A500 section... WHY would you buy a phone you were unhappy with? Did you really buy it to just sit there in agony until ICS was released? Suffer horribly under Gingerbread until the promise of a new OS became reality? Really?
Same offer- I'll give you $50 for your oh-so-hated Gingerbread Razr. $55 if it's a Maxx.
sigh

Motorola said it will release on Q2 2012, so I think we should wait till end of June

out with the photon.

I love my photon, but there is that pesky unlocked situation. i recently switched internet providers and had to use 3g for a few days since im running the gummy rom. after the 3 days im ready to switch. i need 4g and the abilty to tinker with my device. this has been a great phone, but motorola has let everyone down. i will be switching back to htc starting with evo 3d. Thanks to the devs and photon members that have made hacking this phone fun and easy. im gonna miss it.

I feel your pain, but good things come to those who wait. I imagine youll hate your 3D after being with the Photon. Seems to be the general consensus. Bad software is fixable, bad hardware isn't.
3D? are you serious? I'd get original before 3D if that is your opinion. But just like other poster, Im waiting it out!
My Photon still does 4G just fine. Honestly, I've never understood why people moved from 4G to 3G-only ROMs.
---------- Post added at 03:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:40 PM ----------
I have an original EVO (now daughter's), EVO 3D (wife's), and Photon (mine).
Photon has clearly better radios. Otherwise, all are nice phones.

i don't understand why people need 4g so desperately.
the only thing motorola lacks is updates and unlocked bootloaders.
i already have the 3d. it works good and they have great roms. i need 4g when i cant use wifi. its an unlock issue. it shouldnt matter if i want to unlock it. evo was the best phone ive ever had. for a hackalicious person like myself. the 4g roms on the photon just arent near as good as installing kitchen sink. i want unlocked options on a 4g device. btw gummy is the only rom that works perfect mms etc.

theres nothing to wait for, motorola will never unlock the bootloader. i dont want stock ics. i want maxed out kernel pushing the device.

Forum someone that would on phones all day I can say that the 3d isn't nearly as well made as the original evo. I wish they used all the money they put in that parallax display for better build quality. I'm interested to see how policy changes at Motorola now that they are Google owned but I don't hold much hope that it will affect the current handsets.

Because it's there, like ICS ROMs. It's a nice perk, but vs. 3G? No big deal. I mean, you don't see anybody posting speed tests about how much faster it is. My understanding is that it isn't much faster, just more stable on video. So maybe it's 3MBit as opposed to 1MBit or something. But again, nobody with 4G is bragging about the speed with solid numbers; until they do I wouldn't worry about it. Also, it's in what, two cities in America? Los Angeles and New York City? Maybe Chicago and Dallas as well? I dunno. I'm sure it's more than that but the point is, most of us couldn't get it if we wanted it.
Motorola will always get better signal than HTC, at least for now. They have the best radios; everything else is a compromise. Motorola usually wins on battery life, too. I just think Motorola makes the best hardware. Best software, that's another story. Blur is a dog, but I'm no fan of Sense. I think Sense is great for iConverts who need hand holding in the big scary Android world, but for me, I just want AOSP with the Google apps and a few others and I'm good. I will say that the Sense clock is nice, though. They can keep their weird ring lock, though; the one in CM9 is better. Non-Motorola smartphones are to Motorola phones what Hackintoshes are to real Macs. A nice try but not quite the total package. IMO.

4G is Much faster, but I travel a lot and rarely am able to keep a 4G connection for more than 30 seconds or a minute or so. And more like 1G in my house, but I use 6M WiFi so OK. So, 4G for me is worthless.
But likewise, there is nothing in the custom 3G ROMs that excites me. I prefer stability over a few minor tweaks.
my gummy rom is super stable. i live in downtown seattle an my 3g barely loads facebook, but my 4g(when i sbf back to stock at random times) is blazing. faster than my home comcast. i might just flash this photon to boost so if im geting 3g only ill pay 50 instead of between 100-200 to sprint.
people say motorola has better radios but i dunno my gfs iphone 3g rules.

I just had to chime in. My wife had the evo 3d, ended up replacing it 6 times for different issues, she was finally available for her upgrade and she got the SGS3. She LOVES that phone. She is on it night and day. She said it is a night and day difference in how smooth everything is etc. Just my 2 cents, but the evo3d was a poorly executed phone. The hardware was great (with the exception of the 3d camera) but the software was JUST not there and too slow...

Yeah, I have to say the 3D was a super turd when it came to performance. Idk exactly what was causing it to be such a dog, unstable sense and firmware ota for my wifes, I definitely would have took my og evo over it any day of the week... And it wad dropped on toilet, spiderwebbed screen, half a flash, lol! It was a flash machine, roms for days, kernels, devs out the wazoo, just a great phone. Unlock this photon I have now, locked up like Fort Knox! And I need 4g so that the way it shall stay... #goodbyemoto #hellos3/evolte
