I really wanna get the amaze and really don't care for anything else recently released or pegged to be released this year. I can overlook all the other issues, since I think overall the phone is amaze-ing, but my biggest gripe is that the audio capture quality when recording video is horrendous. And they had the nerve to tout the camcorder by putting a dedicated button! It is earsplittingly sharp and distorted. Makes my ears hurt and hard to understand in general, not to mention all the stray sounds that sound like there's a lightning storm somewhere... I can't believe so many reviewers think it sounds good or tout the 44khz stereo recording. Blegh. It shares a lot of DNA with the Mytouch 4g slide and somehow inherited that phone's bad audio as well.
I'm thinking there should be a software fix, somehow, since I doubt the audio sounds like this when making a call. I don't know why there would be such a big difference in the first place. I don't think they fixed the bad audio in the mytouch 4g slide, so they are probably just gonna leave the amaze half-baked. Why does no one care about the audio quality of videos? At least the loudspeaker is decent I hear, with some wild polar opposite mixed reactions though...

yeah i feel the same way. if audio is fixable, i will get this phone. if not, then camcorder is a useless feature.
Is a hardware issue with most htc phones. My G2 and mytouch 4g were the same way. The quality is not as terrible as people say, its just not on par with the quality of the rest of the phone making it an easy issue to point out. No phone is perfect. Sadly, they all have their down sides. Overall The phone is top notch!
Proud HTC Amaze owner
Darn its a hardware issue? Saying no phone is perfect really doesn't excuse the bad audio issue. It kind of breaks the camcorder for me. The bad audio isn't just hearsay, its half a dozen or more youtube videos with that really bad audio, and then all the other videos showing HTC's legacy of bad audio, like from the MyTouch 4g Slide. And the Amaze is damn sexy too. They seem to be the only Android manufacturer making those curvy nice unibody metal phones. Kind of disappointed with the Galaxy Nexus. lol. I'm jumping for the Atrix 2, cuz Motorola has gone up leaps and bounds on the camcorder with the Bionic and now the Atrix 2. It's also dirt cheap in comparison to the Amaze. Man decisions. But the Amaze feels so sexy...
there might be a software fix (like voodoo sound?) Once we start getting into the phone more...possibly a Mic filter?

I haven't really heard of one for HTC phones, or really a fix the bad audio recording on any phone ever. I don't really follow this stuff though so I could be completely wrong. The best I've seen is higher bitrate/sampling hacks, but it really doesn't fix a bad mic. I'm guessing it was engineered deliberately that way or left that way because they couldn't find a solution or were lazy and thought no one would care. I think its impossible to not hear the flagrant sound problems unless their sound engineers were turning Beethoven.
I've noticed the Amaze sound problems on all youtube amaze videos which are in stereo. the audio for GS2 videos is all mono, but much better quality.
Test mono audio with video...? what is result. Is it same problem?

hi, what is the difference between mono and stereo?
There is a thread for amaze recording for both mono and stereo.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302710.
Stereo would be MUCH better, giving spacial dimension, and with headphones the youtube amaze stereo audio is nice but terrible quality. Noise and no low end. SG2 has good sound fidelity but is only mono, single source but fidelity is more important than stereo.
I did notice the SG2 XDA has 32 bit CD quality sound but don't know if it's stereo.
the first try to do an audio fix would be use an equalizer. Load a video (with audio) into a processing program on a PC or Mac and see if the sound quality is fixable. If someone has an in with HTC they should get a response about this from the engineers.
---------- Post added at 09:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:35 AM ----------
I know cyanogenmod has the graphic audio equalizer so yeah, thinking about it WE NEED AN APP! Take the damn stereo channels in the AMAZING videos, apply equalization according to the user's gui settings, and save the video!
this will definitely fix the stinkin amaze audio problems and preserve this precious stereo (with no external mic) and fix-a-de-problem. But maybe an external stereo mic is the way to go.....
(baby)
I don't think an equalizer is gonna fix this problem. I've also heard the mono recording from the amaze. It isn't that much better than the stereo. I'm not too concerned whether it is mono or stereo. You are using a phone to record, both mics being only a few cm away from each other and usually not even placed in a proper left/right configuration. The other mic should just focus on noise cancellation. The other problem is the Amaze is $550 even on ebay...
Maybe someone would plug a stereo (condenser probably) microphone in and see if it records well good fidelity with stereo.
Since SGS2 has a top and bottom mic and I think is mono, I wonder if they use them for decent low end. (as well as noise cancellation if that's necessary)
One problem with the Amaze is no low frequencies.
The other problem is clipping noise which cannot be corrected except by recording level adjustment.
---------- Post added at 01:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:38 PM ----------
The stereo on the Amaze recordings is really great. (put on some headphones and compare). my opinion is it's really a good thing.

to be clear, you like it and everyone else hates it?
thanx
To be clear: I like the stereo! that is very different than the fidelity. (frequency response)
The fidelity is the frequency response and the clipping problems. They are very bad but they might just be the microphones not the audio circuits, and the circuits might be connected to a stereo microphone input on the input jack so that stereo would be preserved, and it'd have decent sound. (by plugging in a stereo mic)
Is that clear?
Thanks!
The SGS2 has great fidelity but it is mono. At least from the phone's microphones which I assume are not stereo but are noise cancelling or maybe fix the frequency response. (Maybe the SGS2 has a stereo mic input I don't know that either!!)
P.S. We need hardware threads on xda-developers or maybe there is a hardware dedicated web site for cell phones (needed)
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but didn't want to start a new one.
I believe the problem is Sense 3.0 related and the gain HTC applied to the mics. I've come from a Sensation - and we had the exact same clipping problem on the phone with stereo recording and mono sounded a little better, but not much. When the Sense 3.5 leak came out, end of September for the Sensation the clipping problem went away in stereo recording. I went to a Sense 3.5 Rom for that reason alone because stereo recording sounded terrific. Once you bump up the media_profiles.xml to accept a higher bitrate it was a terrific stereo camcorder. No clipping at all.
I just got the Amaze and have given the Sensation to my wife with a Sense 3.5 Rom.
I love everything so far about the Amaze, the stereo clipping is the only issue I'd like to see fixed, at least for me.
BTW - I've listened to some YouTube vids of the Rezound camcorder and they sound fine in stereo. And the Rezound is Sense 3.5.
I've looked around for an adjustment in the smalis of the htccamera.apk but can't find anything that relates to the mic gain.
Anyone have any idea where the fix would be for this?
IDK if this will help but their is two thing that I did that seemed to help.
1) Make sure your finger isn't over the mic, it happens more than you think.
2)Use and External Mic, i have a pair of beats headphones that seem to have better audio than the mic it self.
In reality their isn't really an easy fix like flashing something. Its a hardware thing overall of the phone. Hope this helps this is all I could think of that might help.

But am looking to upgrade, and this phone seems great because of the 3D which will make it kinda future proof if you will.
Either way, how is sound quality?

Are you talking about the microphone quality? Its incredibly improved over the evo4g. Stereo and picks up a wide range frequency wise. I was amazed how well it recorded a concert I was at. In fact amazed. My evo4g clipped well before this phone and I haven't clipped the mics yet.
Nah im just talking about how music sounds if you got your headphones plugged it.
coming from an itouch 4g, the sound is much quieter and the sound quality is at most half as good imo, but this is with monitor headphones and 320kbps cbr mp3, if you have **** headphones(beats, skullcandy) then it doesnt matter
I had a GalaxyS with Voodoo sound....this 3devo is as good in the sound, a bit faster in all around use, and a bit faster internet with WiMax.
Once it gets a solid perm root and a few roms it will blow the Vibrant I had (with overstock kernel and a team whiskey rom) right out of the water.
I was using my note at a concert the other night and the audio is terrible in a loud venue, any thoughts on how to make it better? you can see the moment when mine starts is where the singer grabs his iphone and shoots with it. There's gotta be a way to make it not clip the audio I think its a software issue not hardware.
I'm loving this phone though!!!

I'm sure someone will come up with something somewhat useful for you... but my suggestions? don't record concerts with a phone, they're not made for it. zoom makes some nice recorders with mics designed for recording live audio.
You will need some sort of buffer, such as a cotton ball over the mic, as the sound pressure produced by the speakers at a concert is way too overwhelming for the mics on phones. You're basically maxing out what the mic can collect in terms of loudness, so the track will clip and sound like sh*t.
Agreed with previous poster... The problem is at a concert you are getting more bass than your Mic can handle so it crashes your midst and highs.
And no, there is no way to fix the audio on the videos previously recorded. If you want to record with the phone in the future the best idea is to use a cotton ball or clothing to cover the Mic To reduce bass or stand farther from the speaker while recording

Just wondering what you guys think of it? I go to a lot of concerts and music festivals and the video quality on the note is superb. However, the sound from the video is horrible. The one thing that me and my friends all agree upon is the video sound recording on the iphone is better than any phone out there. The note simply cannot handle loud sounds, particularly really loud bass. The sound on the whole video is just off and it sounds like the microphone is in direct wind. Dont get me wrong, I love the note and I am an android fanboy, however I think this is an area which the iphone dominates. What do you guys think about the sound recording quality? Is there anyway to fix this through software? hardware?
never found a problem with audio from video recordings. few weeks ago i was filming a drift event at a local track and sound came out fine with all the loud noises going on.
Speaking of, do you guys have any YouTube links of vids with your note?
I just can't seem to live with out a removable storage, and I have been leaning in the notes direction.
I am just worried about video, and pic quality with the note...I had a 4g galaxy s and the pics were awful.

the playback of audio recorded with a video is going to bad if you are recording anything with a lot of bass or any high dB sounds that are above the microphones ability to capture. These phones use a microphone thats really just a small speaker, when loud sounds are being emitted and your trying to capture them they can ofter "bottom out" the microphone so that all you hear is loud static distortion or if the bass is really heavy, nothing at all.

I think the video quality is awesome on this phone. I haven't watched them on any external devices though, my opinion is purely off of viewing the videos off the phone.
As far as the drift meet you went to, I'm pretty sure the note can handle the sounds of screeching tires, I am mainly talking about BASS. I understand that almost all devices have a certain limit until the microphone can no longer handle the strong bass. The sound gets distorted, and you can't hear anything else. All I am saying is that somehow the iphone is able to handle strong bass at a concert even when you are standing pretty close to the stage. Anyone else experience the distorted sound on their note?
I have personally experienced this and it must be due to the different build qualities of the microphone. Is it possible to attach an external microphone via the headphone jack and use that to record video sound rather than using the one built into the phone? that would make a huge difference IMO

also not sure why your expecting amazing quality sound from recording a live performance, no matter what phone if ur close to the speakers your not going to get non distorted sound, ive owned every iphone and never heard clear quality sound after going back and watching vids i took at partys and such, i do belive i saw something on engadget the other day about a better quality mic u can plug into the headphones jack

I was just thinking about this before bed last night. I was looking at some recently shot kareoke videos from my note. The audio quality is absolutely horrendous. Like...disappointing bad.
My atrix was was leaps and bounds better. Was able to handle (and reproduce) bass just fine. Never distorted the audio like the note does. From concerts (rock mind you) to kareoke, anything...I guess its an unfortunate con ill have to live with.

I know exactly what you mean, in terms of capturing sound at, say...a concert. It is overpowered. I've heard that one way to tackle this problem is to put tape, or a finger, over the mic hole when recording.
Here's a vid I took when I saw The Black Keys a cpl months ago. I even wrote in the description that it's a shame the sound is crappy...

I am not expecting amazing sound quality, just good enough so that it doesnt sound like crap. Obviously microphones on phones have their limits, but as I have stated, and as others in this thread have stated, the note is pretty bad at recording sound. My girlfriend has an iphone and all of my friends have iphones, and trust me, the sound recording is much better on it. Still love my Note though, best phone ever!
I seen rammstein and just like the others said.. Very loud sounds makes the audio sound very muffled and hard to hear.. I wonder if I had the the recording volume set halfway. If it would of sounded better?

Sound quality was audible enough. So thats my pov on this subject. You should try it.
Why do people keep on ignoring the terrible audio capture? Every video I have seen and heard from the GS3 has terrible audio. It is actually worse than the HTC X in many instances, and that phone has rather subpar audio capture as well. There are many many phones that capture much better audio, from the Xperia S, Motorola Razr, Nokia Lumia, iPhone, Rim Blackberry Bold, and even most of Samsung's own previous and lower tier phones and of course this phone's predecessor, the S2. About the only thing worse is probably most HTC phones, but not by much. Samsung's audio capture quality has dropped big time, into the gutter actually, and every review I've read has ignored this fact. There are occasional mentions of it by other posters, but ultimately the screaming fanboys usually overwhelm the conversation by saying how awesome everything is and to STFU GTFO about it.
I don't think there's anything wrong with my hearing. There's just something wrong with this phone. So why is this issue falling on deaf ears? Pun intended.

Honestly, I got my Galaxy III yesterday and due to bad audio in my recorded videos (I do record a lot) i'm seriously thinking to return it.
Compared to my current SE Xperia Pro which has a nice sound in all videos the quality of the sound in my videos made with S3 is really bad

I am very much bothered with that awful thin sound.
I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with Voodoo sound.
It has to do with some ****ty Band Pass Filter if you ask me.
It sound like there is no bass, middle, and no high.
Only some mid/high is left. can easily be checked actually.
if you want better audio on recordings, just use the included headset and plug it in before starting the recording.

Well has nothing to do with fan boys I guess. In my case for instance, I actually never use my phone to record audio/ video, so I really do not care about that feature at all. If I need to record video, or take superb pics, I use my Canon D600, and I do not mind the weight.
I do reckon that in the reviews there has been more emphasis on the image quality, rather then the audio quality... However that is something you'll have to confront the actual reviewers with rather then the users that do not use certain features that much or at all.

The issue is most prominent when recording someone speak, or some music being played, or some sounds which fill the entire audio spectrum not just some walking noises.

I don't know if noise cancellation is active during video recording, but let me just remember you the size of the SGS III microphone, that is only a few milimeters (and the hole is less than a milimeter wide). Don't expect anything spectacular with such a small piece, it's far from being as large as this : http://www.guitariste.com/share/achat/marchands/woodbrass/neumann-u-87-i-116930.jpg

Actually - I just recorded myself with High Q MP3 Rec (Lite) and there is plenty of bass. So this problem should be resolvable by changing the way audio is recorded or captured. Here is me speaking into the mic : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15924481/recording-20120606-174117.mp3
In my opinion there is so much more bass there. The audio quality obtained when recording video has a great deal of margin to improve.
he meant the audios in videos that are record by sgs3.

Ahh so thats what this is all about, for me it seems like the noise cancelation could be reason if it, its too sensitive you can notice on the beginning of the video.. could supercurio voodoo tool be able to fix or improve this ?

yes that was what i thought ever since those gsmarena vids,
that the noise cancellation is set a bit aggressive when recording vids.
Noise cancellation should be disabled when recording video IMHO.
It is good when talking on the phone you want only your voice to go through and clear, but when recording audio as audio, i think there is no need.
Top mic should be left, bottom should be right, and thats it
Sound recording quality is poor.
I love messing about with sound, and wish the audio quality was better for voice recording particularly.
I just wondered if I'm alone in this, but I have always found that my Galaxy S2 was never exactly amazing quality when recording audio, for example using one of the many dictaphone programs I have tried. I don't think there is anything mechanically wrong, there is just always a lot of background hiss the recorded words are fairly clear. I've messed around with all settings, and it's the same with the external headset plugged in.
I use voice to text software often, and I don't get as good and accuracy as I did with my old HTC wildfire phone.
With the wildfire, there was a tiny bit of interference noise recording on the handset, but it was virtually crystal clear with a headset plugged in.
Just wondered if anything can be done about this.
Also the hands-free calling is virtually unusable on my S2, people say I sound like I'm in a fish tank.
I don't think there's anything wrong with a microphone, using the phone in the normal way people can hear me fine, and like a thorough get fairly good recording.
I have to say is pretty much the one thing that bugs me about the S2, I wonder if it is a Samsung thing
Because I have their 5 inch media player and that give similarly poor audio results when recording. Though not quite as bad as my S2.
Your thoughts will be much appreciated
