[Q] Help understanding connection between Modems & ROMs - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
Sorry if this is a bit of a newbie question but I’m a bit confused with connection between ROMs and Modems.
I have flashed a few custom ROMs to my SGS2 and have found that some of the cooks have included modems in their ROMs.
To my understanding Modems are specific per country and not all modems work well in all countries. I am located in Israel and the official Samsung ROM from the mobile provider is I9100TJIKG1
After flashing a custom ROM (SensatioN by CRYSIS) using CWM I found that I no longer have HSPA and my maximum connection speed is Edge.I tried dong a restore from CWM this restored my ROM but not the modem. I then flashed back to my original ROM via Odin (was able to find a copy) but this does full flash.
My questions are as follows
Is there a way to flash just the modem via CWM or Odin? (preferably CWM)
Does the Modem have to be compatible with the ROM?
If I find a custom ROM I like can change just the Modem?
How do I choose a modem? Is there any logic in the naming of the modems that can help me identify if the modem is compatible prior to flashing?
Thanks
Jonx

[Q] Moving from branded rom to stock rom

I want move from my branded vodafone rom to the latest stock rom. so am I correct in assuming all I have to do is get the latest stock rom from one of the other threads and flash using odin?
Is there anything else I should look out for?
You'll have to reset the phone after flashing, if you want to change the phone's csc
Pick a rom with CSC for your area is the best method .

[Q] about flashing modem on custom ROM

hello,
i live in israel and with cellcom provider.
right now on cognition 1.31, i am looking for a my cellular provider Modem which comes in the CSC(?) on 2.3.3 HEBREW ROM.
is it possible to use 2.3.4 firmware with a CSC that came from 2.3.3 ROM?
switching the modem is possible when you switch CSC or is the process different?
if so, how can i extract the provider modem in orfer to flash it onto my ROM..
if the question is why- its because i have issues with GPS and such and also i think it would improve my battery time.
thanks
Hm, not really sure what exactely you're trying to do.
Modem and CSC are two totally different things.
The Modem software is the firmware of the actual radio/modem device that handles all the traffic to and from the cell network, WiFi and bluetooth.
The CSC is a set of settings, parameters and options.
So, you want to modify/edit settings, like APN or the such, or you really want to flash a new modem firmware/software?
The modem software is part of the firmware ROM .tar, look for modem.bin, that's the one.
Yes, can be flashed independently from the current ROM installed.

[Q] Can you change your Kernel???

Hello All,
I just changed from having a sony xperia x10 to getting a new SG2 and I am brand new to the SG2 forums. I am currently with Rogers wireless in Canada, but the phone was originally a Bell Mobility phone that was unlocked. I do see that superuser is installed on the phone (in which I assume that would be it has already been rooted) and I am able to use the phone on Rogers now.
I now want to install custom ROMs, but I do see that it is quite different than what I am used to. I see that custom kernels are all based on your existing Kernel (please forgive me if that is incorrect...), and that custom ROMS are tailored to specific kernels.
My current Kernel is
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513
root(at)DELL103 #2
Model number - GT-i9100M
Android version - 2.3.3
Baseband Version - I9100MUGKF6
Am I able to change the kernel, so that I can install custom ROMs onto my phone? Or will the current firmware suffice? Thank you very much for your help, it is much appreciated!
Do you mean a kernel the full firmware or a custom rom .
kernel is upgraded with a later firmware or a custom rom .latest custom rom will usually have latest kernel or custom kernel .
Decide what custom rom you want and follow the instructions .
Rough draft to update to cognition rom latest i would
Flash a matching stock rom KG6 via Odin .
Flash matching CWM and Root Kernel KG6 .
Boot phone and set up .
Follow instructions in rom post which is usually copy to sd card boot to recovery mode and install zip via CWM .
Your Firmware is KDD thats very old now .
Only must check is Bell Canada and do you need to flash a different modem and or CSC for that area .

That is a TON of help. Thank you so much, I really appreciate it
Does anyone know if the current Bell SG2 can install an EU ROM?
Yes, I've installed a custom ROM (lightening ROM) which is based off a European ROM on my Bell's SGS II.

Advantages of Flashing Country-Based Firmware

Hi Guys,
I have searched around but cannot find an answer to my question. Does it matter if you flash a ROM/Firmware that is meant for a different country if it is unbranded?
Are there any advantages to flashing the relevant Firmware/ROM for your country or disadvantages to flashing an unbranded Firmware/ROM meant for a different country?
I live in South Africa and was thinking of flashing this ROM but just wanted to inquire first - http://wanamlite.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=375

In my opinion, you can go ahead and flash that rom without any concerns .The rom will work fine and will be stable(if it is stable lol). The only problem you might face is the modem..You might not get proper signal reception or data speed etc as the modem will be different than your country one because of flashing the new rom..However, you can easily flash another modem to suit your device. However, do make a backup before doing anything..U never know any screwups can occur..
By the way..I would also like to know the advantages of country specific firmware lol..though i have tried different country firmwares and they work perfectly on my phone(except that modem thingy i mentioned above)
Only advantage is the modem. But I did not face any problem yet about low signal or etc. And you can easily flash another modem via cwm or Odin. Custom Roms are much better than stock.

GT-I9100T Firmware Request

Hi guys, i want a firmware or custom rom for galaxy gt-i9100t, if there is any rom after 4.1.2 ! , also i have a question: the normal rom for g-ti9100 could be installed on gt-i9100t !!?
There isn't any stock firmware >4.1.2. Yes, you can flash I9100 stock roms on the I9100T, but you may have to use a modem from an I9100T rom if you're using the phone on a network belonging to a carrier who sold the I9100T.
okay 10x for help, i'm so greatfull
What about a i9100 custom rom?! Can i use it to i9100t !?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Yes, of course. the I9100 & I9100T (I also have an I9100T) are exactly the same except for a very slight difference in radio output, achieved by firmware - the modem.
If you flash an I9100 stock rom, it will include an I9100 modem which might (not always though) mess with your connectivity, and as I hinted at in my PP, in my experience, using modems which have been bundled with stock roms released by carriers which sold the I9100T tends to result in the best connectivity. You can check these by searching the I9100T firmwares on Samfirmware, which lists the baseband (modem), and you can then find/download whatever modem in question here.
However, if after flashing an I9100 stock rom your connectivity is OK, no need to change the modem. Only change the modem if your connectivity isn't great. Custom roms don't include modems, so flashing a custom rom won't change your current modem.
i got it, thank you very much for your help and your notes about the modem thing :good: .
