Advantages of Flashing Country-Based Firmware - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I have searched around but cannot find an answer to my question. Does it matter if you flash a ROM/Firmware that is meant for a different country if it is unbranded?
Are there any advantages to flashing the relevant Firmware/ROM for your country or disadvantages to flashing an unbranded Firmware/ROM meant for a different country?
I live in South Africa and was thinking of flashing this ROM but just wanted to inquire first - http://wanamlite.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=375

In my opinion, you can go ahead and flash that rom without any concerns .The rom will work fine and will be stable(if it is stable lol). The only problem you might face is the modem..You might not get proper signal reception or data speed etc as the modem will be different than your country one because of flashing the new rom..However, you can easily flash another modem to suit your device. However, do make a backup before doing anything..U never know any screwups can occur..
By the way..I would also like to know the advantages of country specific firmware lol..though i have tried different country firmwares and they work perfectly on my phone(except that modem thingy i mentioned above)

Only advantage is the modem. But I did not face any problem yet about low signal or etc. And you can easily flash another modem via cwm or Odin. Custom Roms are much better than stock.

[Q] Help understanding connection between Modems & ROMs

Hi guys
Sorry if this is a bit of a newbie question but I’m a bit confused with connection between ROMs and Modems.
I have flashed a few custom ROMs to my SGS2 and have found that some of the cooks have included modems in their ROMs.
To my understanding Modems are specific per country and not all modems work well in all countries. I am located in Israel and the official Samsung ROM from the mobile provider is I9100TJIKG1
After flashing a custom ROM (SensatioN by CRYSIS) using CWM I found that I no longer have HSPA and my maximum connection speed is Edge.I tried dong a restore from CWM this restored my ROM but not the modem. I then flashed back to my original ROM via Odin (was able to find a copy) but this does full flash.
My questions are as follows
Is there a way to flash just the modem via CWM or Odin? (preferably CWM)
Does the Modem have to be compatible with the ROM?
If I find a custom ROM I like can change just the Modem?
How do I choose a modem? Is there any logic in the naming of the modems that can help me identify if the modem is compatible prior to flashing?
Thanks
Jonx

Issue with network signal/modem

Hello!
Probably it's not the perfect thread to post in, but i've got an Ace with signal problems. I'm on 3 UK network, and so far i know, there's only 2.2 branded firmware issued for this device. I have that in md5 format, which i can flash through odin, however that is a [email protected] Is there any way to flash the csc from that to any gingerbread version? as it is in .rfs format, and odin does not really like it. Is it affecting in any way my phone if i flash that to a gingerbread format, or ICS if i can? If so, could you tell me how to do it? Or how to solve my network signal issue? So far itried it with CM7, CM9, but it was still bad. I mean i did not have any signal, however in my I9100 there's almost full coverage in the same place, and i'm not using stock rom on that one. I just flashed the modem from the carrier branded firmware, but to flash on that device is much more easier, as there is many source for the modem file in the correct format.
So to make it clear, i need someone to help me to solve network issue (3 UK) in any way like flashing somehow the modem from old 2.2 (if that's possible), or if someone can point me a firmware with working "radio"/modem. Thanks in advance!

[Q] Can flash other ROM on SG version SG2?

Dear members here,
Can i just ask or know if its ok or advisable to flash other region ROM (eg XWLP7)on my SG2 as i am from singapore and baseband version is DXLP9 (ICS) or DXKL3 (GB).
Thanks.
Yes, you can flash a stock rom for another region. You more than likely won't be able to get OTA firmware updates tho if you do. You'd need to re-flash stock firmware for your region in order for those to work again. And even if you do, some people still end up having problems getting OTA firmware updates once they've done so. Which isn't a massive problem as it's easy enough to flash firmware updates for your region via Odin (many people on XDA have done this).
Also, make sure to use a firmware for a model suitable for your phone.
I9100G can only use i9100G firmwares and kernels...
I9100, I9100P, and I9100T can all use each others' firmwares and kernels.
Thanks for all the advise.. i have loaded a baseband of NELP3 and its amazing...

[Q] Upgrading firmware with Odin

Hi guys I just wanted to know if what I'm about to do is the correct method to upgrade my firmware from gingerbread to ics.
I bought my phone ( i9100 ) from Hong Kong and I live in a different country. So when there was an update for its firmware, i was unable to receive it even after checking for updates through system. So what I'm about to do is use Odin and download a firmware from samfirmware under HK's firmware and put it in the PDA part of Odin and run it.
Is this method correct? Or am I suppose to do something else? My phone is not rooted and I dont intend for it to be just yet and I'm also wondering if I use HK's firmware, will it affect my network coverage? Because being in a different country and having a different assigned network and all might cause a few problems with its radio or something?
Please advice thanks
Hi yes that's how I upgraded my firmware that method will work. Be sure to factory reset first though. As for your carrier concerns I can't answer sorry. The beauty with this though is that you can re-flash a different firmware if it doesn't work. All the best

1. Your method is correct. You shouldn't have signal issues.
Before flashing you must go through the flashing guides.
2. If you are living in another country and don't have plans of going to Hong Kong or your phone is out of warranty (this doesn't matter), you can flash any firmware for your present location. It will work very fine.
