hey guys im really scared so i wanted to ask and see if anyone knows for sure but i flashed codeworks kernal for cwm and then rooted with superoneclick and was wondering would i brick my phone if i do a factory reset from phone options or will it work as normal or what will happen if i do that? plz some1 help me thx
A factory reset where? In ClockWork Mod recovery? If you for it there it will not harm your phone, but it will wipe all the apps you installed and reset your settings. You will not lose the contents of your internal SD memory, and you will not lose root. It does not actually revert to stock, its just like you freshly installed the ROM again.
Edit: Nevermind, I see you said phone settings. I would assume you get the same behavior as I desribed, but I've never tried it so I don't know for sure.
Sent from my SGS II
Correct. it will refresh you to the rom you have installed. I just recently posted a link to another forum on how to get back to the stock rom if you want to.
ok well i will give it a shot and see what happens im crossing my fingers but i will let u know thx
edit: wait i forgot to ask this also my phone is unlocked with helroz app will i lose the unlock? do i have to do it again? if everything resets to normal?

Assuming you're talking about SIM Unlock, then you will retain it. Even completely reverting back to stock still retains a sim unlock state, which is a good thing. =)
But I want it...
OK, I am using my rooted - CWM CM7 I777 phone - AT&T has just agreed to up me to the skyrocket because I am still in my 30 day grace period. I need to get this phone back to absolute day one no monkey business stock..
How?
Skyrocket is not an upgrade. You'll be limiting your choices severely from a development standpoint.
As to your request. There already is a write up by creepyncrawly in the general section that details every step. And yes you can go from cyanogenmod straight to stock with no issues.

I have an i777 (rooted, ROMd, etc) and my friend does also. She put a passcode on hers for some reason and apparently there was some type of software malfunction and she can't get her phone unlocked. So instead of making her wait weeks for Samsung to fix it, I volunteered to fix it myself.
I've already tried Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
Everything worked fine but, when the phone booted, the screen asking for the passcode was still present.
Does anyone know of another way to try this out? I promised her I'd have it done by tomorrow and that I'd also put ICS on it . And I really don't want to have to tell her I couldn't do it.
Thanks!
EDIT: I've solved this issue (thankfully)! I went into the stock Samsung recovery and chose to wipe data. It asked for a password and I kept entering random characters until it told me if I kept entering them it was going to wipe the phone's data. So it wiped the phones data and everything is now fine. I've rooted it using Entropy's tool from above and I am currently putting AOKP on it .

Is there a way to do it with an official Samsung firmware through the recovery that is preloaded on the device?

Oh really? my previous ROM was passcode protected,, I installed ICS over the weekend and it's never prompted me since then.passcodes seem to be flaky, sometimes mine would carry over from one ROM to another, other times it wouldn't.
Don't know exactly what causes it, I guess maybe try some different ROMs and just be sure to do a full wipe each time and cross your fingers that it disappears

See, I would wipe it, but when I go to wipe it (it doesn't have CWM, just the stock Samsung recovery), it asks for a password. I think I'm screwed .
Nevermind! I've got through the password by getting it wrong too many times. This caused the phone to wipe, and now I have exactly where I need it!
Able to push a kernel with CWM via adb? (sorry don't remember if USB debug is checked by default)
This is interesting.

i did the odinoneclick of ICS last night, and all was well. but not i want to revert back to GB. it still seems a little to buggy for me. so i want to wait a while for the devs to do their thing with it. plus i miss all my custom roms.
is there any way i can do this? i dont exactly understand but apparently the original leaked version did something to the bootloaders or something?
i have the stock ATT GB 2.3.6 rom ( incase i ever needed to return my phone ) i put that through odin ( its a .tar file ) would that safely bring me back to GB?
Did you ever do a nandroid backup on cwm?

I just restored back to gb and double checked to make sure everything works. I made a phone call, sent a text, and went on the internet. The baseband is the ics baseband but didn't seem to effect anything. just remember ymmv.

It had no issue booting but the phone app with just not even open so I just held volume up and down at the same time while powering down so I could factory reset it and wipe the cache and now everything is back to normal with out skipping a beat.
sorry if I made this longer then what it had to be but I just wanted to also give some mini instructions as well jsut in case anyone had a question or two.

I am pretty sure it does although I cant be certain because as soon as it was back up and running I put CWM back on and recovered a back up that I made right before Flashing ICS so all my stuff came back.
Also in any case I did make a back up of ICS in case stuff went really bad and say the bootloader was crazy or something and it messed up and my only option was to stay on ICS at least I would have a back up from a soft brick or something so if you have the room on your sd card might as well do it just to be safe.
yeah im definitely making a backup. well ill report back in a bit if it works
yup. using odin to flash stock att .tar file, then after its finished rebooting into recoery and wiping data factory works like a charm. back on good old 2.3.6
This is the second phone this has happened to, so I'm inclined to believe the problem resides in either the recovery package or there is no way to go from ICS to stock. Here's what I did and what the result was.
1. Initial phone was having hardware issues. I needed to return it to the warranty exchange depot, so I went to flash the no BL file that you can download from the recovery thread. Everything indicated that it flashed just fine. Phone reboots after the process and it gets the the "rethink Everything" splash screen and just sits there. After a minute, it reboots the phone again. Does the same thing. I take the phone in and get it swapped out under warranty.
2. Load CM9 on new phone and notice that GPS doesn't work. Everyone else says theirs works for the same nightly (5/22), so obviously it's my phone that's the problem or a bad flash. Flash a new nightly (5/29) and GPS still doesn't work. I want to flash back to stock to ensure that it's the hardware that's the problem, not the software. I download the most current recovery NO BL file from the recovery thread to ensure I have a good one. Flash it and the exact same thing happens. I get the splash screen then a reboot.
So now the question is, does flashing ICS permanently make it so you can't flash back? Does ICS work fine, but for some reason CM9 doesnt? Has anyone else done this without a problem? If so, what did you do because 2 phones 'bricking' like this isn't convinsing me that it can be done.

Hey guys,
My Galaxy SII has just randomly cracked it. I was using it and it rebooted and when it did I could use it for the first 2 secconds then it went black and said "TWLauncher stopped working"... I knew it was bad but I thought that it was just the launcher playing up. Turns out it was the whole phone. every app I open instantly force quits... I cannot reflash because I cannot lose what is on there (Plus I cant get whats on there off because I cannot connect usb). I need a fix pleeease XDA, I love you guys and I know you can do it

thanks a bunch in advanced, let me know if you need more info

Hey,
Thanks for the sugestion but I cannot lose ANYTHING on the phone Is there any way to do it without losing data?
...
I can't
And I cant factory reset because I cant get into settings
First of all don't call the phone bricked. Because it is nowhere near bricked. If every app force closes on you then the only option would be start again..Your choice of course.
With regards,
Beston94
Will it void warranty?
Lol, Sorry for the bad choice of wording. I am in need of getting this fixed and just threw words at the page. I know what bricked is, (That's how I lost some of my past phones)... I despratly need this phone for tomorrow that is why I am in a rush
If you havent messed with your phone, then your could send it to warranty repair. Of course there is always chance you might lose your data so this could be considered only as the last resort...

Just go into recovery and do a factory reset... Or flash a non wipe rom... There are no other option and why you asking for warranty if you wish to visit service centre... They will do the same that we all ready told you... And you will lose all your data...
So now stop questions and just go and do it... There are no other option
Edit:- and next time always take a backup of all your data just in case you need... Like today

This is good advice if he really does want to brick his phone. You're suggesting he install something for an Epic 4g Touch to an i9100T.
Are you using siyah kernel? I remember that it happened to me once I had to update the kernel + restore data partition from a older nandroid backup...
By the way guys, I have no experience using Odin. I come from a background of Nexus' and other Non-Samsung devices
Maybe this method will work...You won't lose anything. You must be rooted!
Just ask somebody to make you a flashable launcher trough recovery like launcherpro. And maybe it will work
This will void your warranty!

Factory reset from recovery is the easiest way at this point and will probably work since something in your Android framework has likely just gone awry. What kind of data are you afraid of losing? If it's media (such as you're pictures/videos etc.) then it's safe. Hopefully you're storing your contacts in your Google account or SIM card. If that's the case, you'll really only lose settings, apps (and their corresponding non-backed up data) and text messages. If you haven't rooted your phone or done anything to void your warranty, you could take it to a repair center but there's not much point since it's most likely not a hardware error and they'll just factory reset your phone and you'll lose all your data anyway.
The data is calender info, b'days and such... Oh, and they aren't backed up to Google... The contacts are on the sim

Hi mate,
Sorry to hear about your phone.
I had a soft bricked S2 yesterday (bootloops) and I also didnt want to lose any data so I just flashed my stock ROM using Odin without wiping anything and it worked fine NOTHING was lost!
Just google or search on here for your stock official firmware and flash through Odin.
It really is very very simple, even for someone who's never done it before. Just follow instructions EXACTLY and you'll be fine.
There's lots of info on here about using Odin to flash firmware.
A few handy tips for you......
*Make sure latest drivers are installed (download latest Kies and update all drivers) then reboot computer so Kies isn't running in the background as it can mess up the flashing process
*Make sure you are using a good trusted USB port and cable (you don't want to lose connection half way through flashing) If you do it is normally a simple case of flashing again
*Make sure battery is above 80%
*Double check the firmware is right for your phone.
I'm happy to help you out if you get stuck just PM me
Good luck
Hi,
I am rooted on my S3 and all is good. However, my Father also has an S3 and last week he was talked into rooting it by his Grandson. All went well but long story short he was not happy with having a rooted phone so has decided to remove root. He has now done so by following various guides. He used Triangle away which he says went successfully and has used Odin to put the latest stock firmware on the phone which again he says went successfully. I was not there when he did all this but phone seems all good.
Except one thing. He has tried to install a couple of apps he had before rooting. Barclays bank app and Sky Go app. After installation these apps are saying they will not work on a rooted phone, but it's not rooted any more. I have booted into recovery using Volume down, power and home buttons and it says custom firmware / rom, I can't remember exact wording, but it says no. Also in the phone menu where a rooted phone says modified in device status it says normal or whatever it should say. Again can't remember exactly but all looks like no root present.
Anyone got any ideas on this? As I am rooted on my S3 and never un-rooted it yet, I do not know if he should have done something else. Will he have to root again to run triangle away or anything else. Or can this be fixed as the phone is at present?
Thanks for any help guys.
Cheers, Rich

Hi,
He has superSu on the phone. Presumably it has downloaded from the play store when restoring the phone. However, he tried to uninstall it which just removed the updates. Couldn't go any further. It is now asking for updates which he has done. But when he tries to launch Super SU it says no apps configured and won't go any further. I think the fact that super su is on the phone, the apps are thinking it is rooted. I am doing this all over the phone so can't see what's happening.
I'm wondering if the way to go now would be another factory reset and when restoring everything, try not to let play store instal super su. Would this be the way to go, or can we get super su off the phone without a reset?
Cheers, Rich
Try uninstalling super su with titanium backup. Then factory reset. Are you sure you have flashed a stock ROM and not a rooted one. This doesnt sound right.

Hi,
Trying to do these things with him over the phone ain't easy. I may just go and get the phone and do it myself.
He does have supersu on the phone and it is working, well it's installed anyway but obviously does not do the root things as the phone is un-rooted. There is an option in supersu settings to remove root but will this work as the phone is not rooted? Question is how on earth do I remove supersu. Do i need to re-root and remove it that way?

Can't uninstall via Titanium backup as he is no longer rooted unless he roots the phone again. It is a stock rom. It was downloaded via the official rom thread on here.
