Hi,
I am rooted on my S3 and all is good. However, my Father also has an S3 and last week he was talked into rooting it by his Grandson. All went well but long story short he was not happy with having a rooted phone so has decided to remove root. He has now done so by following various guides. He used Triangle away which he says went successfully and has used Odin to put the latest stock firmware on the phone which again he says went successfully. I was not there when he did all this but phone seems all good.
Except one thing. He has tried to install a couple of apps he had before rooting. Barclays bank app and Sky Go app. After installation these apps are saying they will not work on a rooted phone, but it's not rooted any more. I have booted into recovery using Volume down, power and home buttons and it says custom firmware / rom, I can't remember exact wording, but it says no. Also in the phone menu where a rooted phone says modified in device status it says normal or whatever it should say. Again can't remember exactly but all looks like no root present.
Anyone got any ideas on this? As I am rooted on my S3 and never un-rooted it yet, I do not know if he should have done something else. Will he have to root again to run triangle away or anything else. Or can this be fixed as the phone is at present?
Thanks for any help guys.
Cheers, Rich

try doing a factory reset
Has it got a custom ROM or stock ROM? could be due to a custom ROM maybe?

One basic question..are you still able to go into recovery..vol up+power+home..if yes you are still rooted...you need to find your stock firmware and flash it via odin
check if it was a stock firmware your father flashed orcustom ROM o.follow this guide to do it again

Hi,
Just tried that and the S3 will not go into recovery via volume up, power and home. Tried several times and it just powers up as normal. He has just tried his banking app and it's telling him the phone is rooted. I'm stumped on what to do.
Cheers, Rich
Sounds like maybe triangle away didnt properly remove the count, was the firmware he downloaded the official one for his phone? Was it previously branded or anything like that?
go supersu and click remove root

Hi,
He has superSu on the phone. Presumably it has downloaded from the play store when restoring the phone. However, he tried to uninstall it which just removed the updates. Couldn't go any further. It is now asking for updates which he has done. But when he tries to launch Super SU it says no apps configured and won't go any further. I think the fact that super su is on the phone, the apps are thinking it is rooted. I am doing this all over the phone so can't see what's happening.
I'm wondering if the way to go now would be another factory reset and when restoring everything, try not to let play store instal super su. Would this be the way to go, or can we get super su off the phone without a reset?
Cheers, Rich
Try uninstalling super su with titanium backup. Then factory reset. Are you sure you have flashed a stock ROM and not a rooted one. This doesnt sound right.

Didn't know there was something like that. Now I am on stock and un-rooted. I can still go into the recovery by pressing vol up+power+home keys.
Hi,
Trying to do these things with him over the phone ain't easy. I may just go and get the phone and do it myself.
He does have supersu on the phone and it is working, well it's installed anyway but obviously does not do the root things as the phone is un-rooted. There is an option in supersu settings to remove root but will this work as the phone is not rooted? Question is how on earth do I remove supersu. Do i need to re-root and remove it that way?

Can't uninstall via Titanium backup as he is no longer rooted unless he roots the phone again. It is a stock rom. It was downloaded via the official rom thread on here.

Hey guys, I'm new to the SAMSUNG Galaxy scene so take it easy on me.
I just purchased a used Vibrant today and the phone was already rooted without me even knowing it (not that i have a problem with it).
The previous owner didn't do a factory reset so i proceeded to do a hard reset when i noticed there was Clockwork Recovery Mod already installed. After clearing the cache and user data i wanted to confirm if the device was already rooted, so i typed "su" under Terminal and i was granted super user privileges.
Now this is what i dont understand. After doing a hard reset i logged into my recovery but noticed that the original Android recovery was restored and i still had root.
I'm trying to install a new ROM through Clockwork but the market doesn't have the free version so i had to use my PC to send the free version to my Vibrant. Afterwards, when attempting to open Clockwork Recovery Mod (to flash the recovery) the application force closed on me!
I know i can just revert everything back to stock and lose root again but that would be a huge inconvenience for me, and if possible I'd like to figure out what i can do from here. I'm not even positive if the previous owner used the correct method to gain root access or if he/ she skipped a step.
I'd appreciate any help i can get. Thanks in advanced.

The market doesn't have the free version of ROM Manager? It's there for me.
Honestly, though, if I'd just bought a used vibrant, I'd ODIN back to JFD, and start over. Maybe flash Bionix or Trigger or Project V or Bi-Winning.
+1 for Project V, most stable ROM I've used on the Vibrant by far.
Clockwork recovery wont be able to install if your vibrant is running froyo 2.2. Also you should try uninstalling and reinstalling ROM Manger if it keeps closing on you but it would be better if you got it directly from the android market.

My phone is still running on stock firmware Android 2.1. But yeah, I found it very weird to not find the free version of ROM Manager in the market.
So does the unrooting/ rooting method apply to every Galaxy S variant or is it for the international version only?

I'm not sure I understand your question about the "international" version - which is the i9000...but...
I also thought of something else - when you go into recovery, and it's the stock one, did you click reinstall packages...maybe twice?

Nvm, after I checked out the link you sent me, I found the rooting/ unrooting process was for Vibrant's only.
Yes, I did select 'reinstall packages' because I wanted to restore my phone back to its original condition.

if i were you i would follow s15n's noob guide to rooting and other stuff found here... i would odin back to JFD, do a factory reset/wipe cache, re-root, and then flash a custom ROM.
and for a custom ROM, i would highly suggest the Biffmod 1.3.1, it is outstanding and much more powerful than normal roms. also it is gingerbread 2.3.5 rooted.
not sure if this is what you are asking, but if you are having trouble accessing CWM then you can probably access it through the 3-button access (hold down volume up/down button simultaniously and then hold in power button for about 6-7 seconds.) hope this helps

My suggestion? Read, read, read some more, then keep reading. My Goal: set everything back to stock for warranty. (charging system is *%$#ed)
my problem: I am stuck at the unrooting part.
I have read everything I can over and over and yet I still find myself in a predicament. I have restored everything back to stock (I rooted and unlocked my SGS2, but I never used a custom ROM).
I have relocked the device, I have reset everything back to stock. I used the jig to reset the flash counter. I re flashed my secure kernel. Everything checks out, except my Superuser access.
Now here is the part where I am stuck. So essentially from what I read I have 3 options that I can recall:
1 - just re flash my stock ROM to remove root (seems pointless as I have never had to flash a ROM, seeing as I am still on my stock ROM)
2 - unroot using SOC (which failed to work, stuck on step 6)
3 - use Samsung Kies to update. (this also failed, won't detect my phone, and yes it is in Kies mode, no debug)
I am at a loss. I am on the Bell network in Canada, and I am on UGKG2 firmware.
Please let me know if you need more information. Also, I apologize if the answer is in one of the threads. I have been reading everything whenever I can, and just can't figure this one out. thanks for your patience in advance

Well, there is a market app (rootcheck) but it's easy to check yourself, if you dont have superuser in your app drawer you are not rooted.
Let's say, you dont have superuser app and you cannot access cwm recovery = you are not rooted
If I may ask, why exactly is it that you cannot unroot without flashing an original firmware? Why does SOC even give you the option if it doesn't work? Thanks for the timely replies though

soc does work but a lot of people screw up 3 Simple steps and end up with a semi bricked phone.
Flash a stock firmware is probably the more "safe" system. Also allows you to flash latest version that some countries will never receive or receive very late.
Sry my English sux even more today lol

Ok... So let's troubleshoot why I can't get the unroot to work for SOC... I have tried both in and out of download mode. Debugging on and debugging off. Yet the unroot stops at step 6 and does nothing...

I just flashed the stock rom back. Seems to look quite 100% like it did when it came in the box. Jigged to kill flash counter. I think I am set to send it in Thanks a lot guys.
Following that, looks like for root you just need to download superuser app from market and you are good to go....
Its not so easy as you know.
Removing the superuser apk just removes the superuse app, but then you end up with a semi rooted phone with cwm recovery (that you dont want if you want to go back to stock)

Good im glad you managed to "restock" the phone as you see it is fast and easy with flash of a stock rom

My understanding is that AT&T is rolling it out to in waves. Eventually you'll see the update. They just can't, and don't want to, put it out to every [email protected] at the same time.
From what I've read, if you're planning to root your phone, it's much easier and better supported to do it from an earlier version.

AT&T does this in case the update has a problem that missed their QA process.
I'm fairly certain they are rolling out the update fairly slowly - there were even rumors that it might have been pulled for a while. People getting the OTA have had a LOT of complaints.

The reason you see so many 2.3.6 based ROMs in development is because a few developers took a gamble - they guessed that the UCKK6 leak might be a final release that could go official, and they were right. We had access to a full UCKK6 2-3 weeks before anyone received an OTA.
Note that many of those ROMs are appearing to have a few issues:
1) Weird wifi compatibility issues not present in UCKH7
2) Bluetooth HID is broken - no mouse/keyboard pairing

If you root using either Super One Click, or Doomlords version of the zergrush exploit, you will still retain the stock kernel and be able to get the update without additional changes. If you update while rooted, you will retain root on UCKK6.
I'm not sure, but if you use the zedomax kernel to root, you may lose device manager and therefore not be able to check for the update.

Am I supposed to take the battery out or something. It says do not turn off so I'm a bit confused.
You should not interrupt download mode during a flash, of course, because bad things will happen. However, if the flash is finished, or if you put the phone into download mode without starting a flash, just hold down the power button until the download screen goes away, and the boot screen appears. You can also just pull the battery.

I don't know what would be causing the problem. Some posters indicated that you need to have all the bloatware on the phone, as well as the stock kernel, but I don't know if that is true or not.
I know that when I tested it, I started out on UnNamed. I Used the Odin One-click downloader to put UCKH7 stock plus root, and then updated succesfully. The first time I did it, I forgot to do a data wipe, so after I pulled the files I was getting, I did a data wipe, installed the UCKH7 stock plus root and updated again. The update worked flawlessly on both occasions, retaining root.
So the only thing I can suggest is do a wipe data/factory reset in recovery, install the Return/Unbrick to stock UCKH7 plus root package, and then update. I would think that would clear anything out that would prevent the update.

I was thinking maybe it was because I made a format of the cache and all the rest that you find on the recovery, maybe I've canceled something needed, so I wanted to go back to the stock version and start a new root, is it possible? would it be like nothing happend?
Thanks
Yes. Also, you should've posted in the Q and A section. Cheers!

Ok thanks for the changing of my question, the yes means that if I go back to stock and then root the mobile again it would like nothing happened and everything should be ok

Yea, you can go to www.sammobile.com and download a stock firmware and then flash through odin if you want to go back to stock.
But I would recommend a different rom before you do that. Do a full wipe and try rr or rootbox with a full wipe to see if that fixes any issues.
Hers my dilema, i had 4.1.1 rooted and unlocked and decided to return to stock so I could update to 4.1.2. all went well downgrading to stock but when I got the OTA the phone bootlooped. I could not access the recovery menu to wipe cache (as suggested in a few other post) so I ended up having the download the newest image and flash it to my phone. That worked after using the 16Gb pit file that is here in the forum (it kept failing before trying the pit file). THE QUESTION I have is, how do I root with casual without bootlooping? I tried after getting 4.1.2 installed and it went back into the bootloop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, how exactly did you get 4.1.2 on your phone? You say that using the very latest version of CASUAL still causes bootloops when trying to unlock?
The obvious thing here is YOU NEVER SHOULD HAVE WENT TO ACCEPT THE OTA.
As it is this is a question better answered by AdamOutler or Droidstyle.

I flashed a stock image that I downloaded from stockimages(or something like that) with odin. That got the phone back up and running with 4.1.2. Once I did that, I figured I was back to stock (no root and no unlock) so I tried to run casual to re-root and unlock and ended up in a boot loop. Since then, I have gotten back to root and unlock but from now on I guess I have to update via the TWRP. Thanks for the obvious suggestion but I figured that since i had flashed back to stock it was ok to accept the ota.......I was assuming that I could get full access by running casual. From now on, I will leave well enough alone.

The more updates Verizon pushes the tighter they luck the phone down trying to deal up all the holes our exploits could use, in turn that makes the exploits more risky and more prone to cause potential trouble.
It is best to just leave everything alone once you get rooted and unlocked and just flash the updates via TWRP/CWM, there is no real reason or advantage to updating the normal way. It does nothing different than flashing the ROM in recovery and has no advantages and a huge amount of risk.
It may be that the Odin flashable ROM you got was missing something or was wonky in some way since it didn't come from XDA. It shouldn't have reacted that way if you were using the most up to date version of CASUAL.

I used Odin to get the phone back to stock (vramc3). I tried it on two computers and eventually got it to rum when using the 16 GB .pit file that can be found on this forum. That got me back to stock. I then used casual to re-root and unlock. The thing I have learned is that once twrp is intalled, I only need to download a ROM based on the Verizon stock (unless you want custom) and flash it through twrp. NOT WHAT I INITIALLY DID. I flashed back to stock and accepted an ota which didn't work out well. Took me 5 hours of downloading and trying to get the phone flashed. Good luck. The first thing I would try is downloading the beanstown vzw stock ROM and flash it with the .pit file.

Thanks man, **** I just went through all this bs and finally got mine last night but then I tried to do casual and something went wrong and now I am back in the loop and I don't know if i should just flash the same I did just last night to get it back or what? Thank you though I really appreciate your help
I would try casual agai if you can get into download mode (power + vol dn+ home). If that doesn't work I'd try reflashing. Good luck.

I can get in download mode but the problem seems to be the adb, and since i can't get in the phone to turn it on casual never picks up the device, for all I know?

Check the drivers to make sure the CASUAL driver isn't the one in use.

You may also want to try a different computer...... Different USB ports too. I will work it takes a little patience.
