Hey guys. I just got my brand new galaxy s2 and I'm loving it. But as of right now the latest software update is 2.3.6. Now I'm on 2.3.4 and I checked for a software update and it says I'm on the latest software.

You're not blind...
My understanding is that AT&T is rolling it out to in waves. Eventually you'll see the update. They just can't, and don't want to, put it out to every [email protected] at the same time.
From what I've read, if you're planning to root your phone, it's much easier and better supported to do it from an earlier version.

AT&T does this in case the update has a problem that missed their QA process.
I'm fairly certain they are rolling out the update fairly slowly - there were even rumors that it might have been pulled for a while. People getting the OTA have had a LOT of complaints.

The reason you see so many 2.3.6 based ROMs in development is because a few developers took a gamble - they guessed that the UCKK6 leak might be a final release that could go official, and they were right. We had access to a full UCKK6 2-3 weeks before anyone received an OTA.
Note that many of those ROMs are appearing to have a few issues:
1) Weird wifi compatibility issues not present in UCKH7
2) Bluetooth HID is broken - no mouse/keyboard pairing

Thanks bro. I appreciate that. Now I'm about to root using either super one click or the zedomax way and I just wanted to confirm this with you. When the Att update comes I just use your guide to flash your kernel that comes with stock recovery right? Then I'm done right and I can just apply the ota update regularly right? Thanks again

If you root using either Super One Click, or Doomlords version of the zergrush exploit, you will still retain the stock kernel and be able to get the update without additional changes. If you update while rooted, you will retain root on UCKK6.
I'm not sure, but if you use the zedomax kernel to root, you may lose device manager and therefore not be able to check for the update.

Am I supposed to take the battery out or something. It says do not turn off so I'm a bit confused.
You should not interrupt download mode during a flash, of course, because bad things will happen. However, if the flash is finished, or if you put the phone into download mode without starting a flash, just hold down the power button until the download screen goes away, and the boot screen appears. You can also just pull the battery.

Lol. Yeah. I didn't start a flash at all. I used pda net to get the drivers and upon connecting it didn't work. So thanks. I think I'll use the zedomax way and then flash entropy's daily driver through clockwork mod. I can do that right?
That should work fine.

I don't know what would be causing the problem. Some posters indicated that you need to have all the bloatware on the phone, as well as the stock kernel, but I don't know if that is true or not.
I know that when I tested it, I started out on UnNamed. I Used the Odin One-click downloader to put UCKH7 stock plus root, and then updated succesfully. The first time I did it, I forgot to do a data wipe, so after I pulled the files I was getting, I did a data wipe, installed the UCKH7 stock plus root and updated again. The update worked flawlessly on both occasions, retaining root.
So the only thing I can suggest is do a wipe data/factory reset in recovery, install the Return/Unbrick to stock UCKH7 plus root package, and then update. I would think that would clear anything out that would prevent the update.

Sometimes just for kicks I check to see if there is an update. Even though I am rooted and running Enthropy's kernel.
Today (2011/12/15) all of a sudden it found a new firmware. I searched the news field and didn't see anything about it. Does anyone here know about it?
Looks like its the ICS update. Odd that it came out so quickly.
(just kidding...)
Probably KK6 just went official.
LOL. Wouldn't that be something. Hell will be frozen. Pigs will be flying... etc etc
You should download the file, pull it then post it here for us to rip it apart and see what it is
It said it downloaded, but not sure where the file was downloaded. It wasn't update.zip ( of course)
Anyone has any ideas?
I assume it would be in your downloaded folder.
Im not sure, Ive never downloaded anything OTA.
I'd guess root of the sd card
edit: not actual card
I got nothing
current software is up to date
Says I have the most current software. No way Samsung or AT&T would have ICS out already.

Not me. After update process finished and phone rebooted, I got a message 'Update process interrupted'. The update didn't go through and my phone stays as is (still on 2.3.4 and rooted).
What do different modems do?
What are the difference between UCKH7, UCKJ4, UCKJ1, UCKJ2, and UCKJ6?
Yes but they were quick. I'm glad to get official ics so early.

So after the update, I'm now on 2.3.6. The screen lock bug is fixed, but what else?
Tried two more times. Even unroot my phone. Still failed to update. Oh well. I'll wait until ICS to update then. Too much hassle to go through flashing back to stock process.
Howdy,
Over the past week or so VZW has been trying to do an OTA to my bolt.
I'm rooted with a stock ROM, because I mostly focus on themes for stock ROMS (Until I get a better handle on it) I'm not as good with flashing, but I understand it & can certainly follow directions.
I have CWM/ROM Manager installed, but my question is how can I get VZW to stop trying to send the OTA? I'll flash a ROM from the list under the Development section if this is the issue, but I'm a bit hazzy on which one since only a few seem to have been updated in the past few weeks.
My current setup is below, but I'm more than willing to update to something else:
Android 2.3.4
HTC Sense 2.1
Software 2.11.605.9
If it is as simple as making a back-up, downloading one of the ROM's on the Development page, putting it on the SD card, wiping the data, flash & enjoy then I'm good with that, but I'm just not real familiar with things like upgrading to a new sense from an older one & if that is ok.
Thanks
You can either flash a ROM, or flash this through recovery.
(Put the zip on the sdcard, In ROM Manager, select reboot recovery, in recovery select install zip from sd, choose zip from sd, and select OTABlock.zip. Once it flashes hit back and select reboot system now.)
I tried this and im not having any luck. Phone powered on a few min later powers off and tries to update, leaving me with a android guy and yellow triangle with an exclamation point. Tried flashing .19 again but no luck.

And is PRI Version the Radio?

Hi,
I am rooted on my S3 and all is good. However, my Father also has an S3 and last week he was talked into rooting it by his Grandson. All went well but long story short he was not happy with having a rooted phone so has decided to remove root. He has now done so by following various guides. He used Triangle away which he says went successfully and has used Odin to put the latest stock firmware on the phone which again he says went successfully. I was not there when he did all this but phone seems all good.
Except one thing. He has tried to install a couple of apps he had before rooting. Barclays bank app and Sky Go app. After installation these apps are saying they will not work on a rooted phone, but it's not rooted any more. I have booted into recovery using Volume down, power and home buttons and it says custom firmware / rom, I can't remember exact wording, but it says no. Also in the phone menu where a rooted phone says modified in device status it says normal or whatever it should say. Again can't remember exactly but all looks like no root present.
Anyone got any ideas on this? As I am rooted on my S3 and never un-rooted it yet, I do not know if he should have done something else. Will he have to root again to run triangle away or anything else. Or can this be fixed as the phone is at present?
Thanks for any help guys.
Cheers, Rich

One basic question..are you still able to go into recovery..vol up+power+home..if yes you are still rooted...you need to find your stock firmware and flash it via odin
check if it was a stock firmware your father flashed orcustom ROM o.follow this guide to do it again

Sounds like maybe triangle away didnt properly remove the count, was the firmware he downloaded the official one for his phone? Was it previously branded or anything like that?

Hi,
He has superSu on the phone. Presumably it has downloaded from the play store when restoring the phone. However, he tried to uninstall it which just removed the updates. Couldn't go any further. It is now asking for updates which he has done. But when he tries to launch Super SU it says no apps configured and won't go any further. I think the fact that super su is on the phone, the apps are thinking it is rooted. I am doing this all over the phone so can't see what's happening.
I'm wondering if the way to go now would be another factory reset and when restoring everything, try not to let play store instal super su. Would this be the way to go, or can we get super su off the phone without a reset?
Cheers, Rich
Try uninstalling super su with titanium backup. Then factory reset. Are you sure you have flashed a stock ROM and not a rooted one. This doesnt sound right.

Hi,
Trying to do these things with him over the phone ain't easy. I may just go and get the phone and do it myself.
He does have supersu on the phone and it is working, well it's installed anyway but obviously does not do the root things as the phone is un-rooted. There is an option in supersu settings to remove root but will this work as the phone is not rooted? Question is how on earth do I remove supersu. Do i need to re-root and remove it that way?

I've never pulled battery and haven't ever had issues installing recoveries through Odin. But it wouldn't hurt trying. Out of curiosity, what exactly does it say at the top when you boot into recovery?
Edit: just remembered that if you upgraded to ICS through via OTA, the system reverts back to stock recovery due to code that is imbedded in the ota version of the update. But this code does not exist in the update provided through Kies (what i used). This explains my not needing to do a battery pull during reboot.

As I stated "I just remembered". Confirming your post. So nothing new learned for me lol. It's why I explained why a battery pull may be necessary IF the update was through OTA. If he went through kies, its due to some other reasons. Always best not to make assumptions that's why I asked the questions I did.
Hope y'all have a great Christmas!

Wait until all the new phones get opened today. The forum will be filled with fifty threads like this or the brick threads from wrong Roms!

On the top it says "android system recovery" with no options to flash files or do a backup or anything, which means its the stock one.

As I stated "I just remembered". Confirming your post. So nothing new learned for me lol. It's why I explained why a battery pull may be necessary IF the update was through OTA. Hers my dilema, i had 4.1.1 rooted and unlocked and decided to return to stock so I could update to 4.1.2. all went well downgrading to stock but when I got the OTA the phone bootlooped. I could not access the recovery menu to wipe cache (as suggested in a few other post) so I ended up having the download the newest image and flash it to my phone. That worked after using the 16Gb pit file that is here in the forum (it kept failing before trying the pit file). THE QUESTION I have is, how do I root with casual without bootlooping? I tried after getting 4.1.2 installed and it went back into the bootloop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, how exactly did you get 4.1.2 on your phone? You say that using the very latest version of CASUAL still causes bootloops when trying to unlock?
The obvious thing here is YOU NEVER SHOULD HAVE WENT TO ACCEPT THE OTA.
As it is this is a question better answered by AdamOutler or Droidstyle.

I flashed a stock image that I downloaded from stockimages(or something like that) with odin. That got the phone back up and running with 4.1.2. Once I did that, I figured I was back to stock (no root and no unlock) so I tried to run casual to re-root and unlock and ended up in a boot loop. Since then, I have gotten back to root and unlock but from now on I guess I have to update via the TWRP. Thanks for the obvious suggestion but I figured that since i had flashed back to stock it was ok to accept the ota.......I was assuming that I could get full access by running casual. From now on, I will leave well enough alone.

The more updates Verizon pushes the tighter they luck the phone down trying to deal up all the holes our exploits could use, in turn that makes the exploits more risky and more prone to cause potential trouble.
It is best to just leave everything alone once you get rooted and unlocked and just flash the updates via TWRP/CWM, there is no real reason or advantage to updating the normal way. It does nothing different than flashing the ROM in recovery and has no advantages and a huge amount of risk.
It may be that the Odin flashable ROM you got was missing something or was wonky in some way since it didn't come from XDA. It shouldn't have reacted that way if you were using the most up to date version of CASUAL.

I used Odin to get the phone back to stock (vramc3). I tried it on two computers and eventually got it to rum when using the 16 GB .pit file that can be found on this forum. That got me back to stock. I then used casual to re-root and unlock. The thing I have learned is that once twrp is intalled, I only need to download a ROM based on the Verizon stock (unless you want custom) and flash it through twrp. NOT WHAT I INITIALLY DID. I flashed back to stock and accepted an ota which didn't work out well. Took me 5 hours of downloading and trying to get the phone flashed. Good luck. The first thing I would try is downloading the beanstown vzw stock ROM and flash it with the .pit file.

Thanks man, **** I just went through all this bs and finally got mine last night but then I tried to do casual and something went wrong and now I am back in the loop and I don't know if i should just flash the same I did just last night to get it back or what? Thank you though I really appreciate your help
I would try casual agai if you can get into download mode (power + vol dn+ home). If that doesn't work I'd try reflashing. Good luck.

I can get in download mode but the problem seems to be the adb, and since i can't get in the phone to turn it on casual never picks up the device, for all I know?

Check the drivers to make sure the CASUAL driver isn't the one in use.

You may also want to try a different computer...... Different USB ports too. I will work it takes a little patience.
