I heard that ice cream sandwich its getting hardware acceleration. why haven't devs put this in a rom before? Too complicated?
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
It would mean that the ics would have a Kernal that allows acceleration, the current kernel doesn't allow it
from my finally liberated X2 roaming the north
I figured. Have devs implemented hardware acceleration on phones with an unlocked bootloader?
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Haven't seen or heard of it on GB. Probably isn't quite possible yet as the phones are already pushed just about to their max.
If moto or VZW (who ever is blocking it) gives us an unlock, I will pay full price for a returned phone if I mess it up!
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Never, phones have alot more to go. Ever wonder why the iPhone is much smoother and faster even though we have faster processors? Hardware acceleration. Android lacked it, until ICS.

actually, Cyanogenmod 7 and touchwiz 4.0 both support hardware acceleration and that's just off the top of my head. i'm sure there are others, but none are availible to the droid x2

Really and where is this tweet I haven't seen hide nor hair of anyone saying anything about what is or isn't getting ICS.
I agree there are no guarantees but if the bootloader ever gets unlocked I am sure someone will build some source ROMs for it. I also, and this is 100% opinion, think it will get ICS as long as Google kicks the devs at Motorola in the ass and tells them to stop releasing buggy as **** software. That and the device will still be fairly new, even if it is seriously lacking in the memory department. Hell I bet someone build ICS for the OG DROID.
it would be nice to see the ICS on this device. i hope development continues for it especially after the long wait for GB to arrive but my fear is that it will be overlooked do to the new devices coming soon...only time will tell...
Over the course of Sunday (9/4/2011) I learned that it is possible to almost flawlessly port Atrix 4G ROM's (excluding CM7!) to Droid X2. They are fully functional minus some cosmetic changes that need to be made for CDMA/Verizon. Over the course of the next week I will be porting some ROM's to Droid X2. If you want to learn more about it then join us on IRC irc.freenode.net #droidx2

Basically, go have a look at the Atrix 4G Development Forum. That will give you some kind of an idea. Anything based on Blur 2.3.3 and up and Nvidia Tegra 2 250 AP20H chips seems to be game. The Atrix works well because it is practically the same phone as the Droid X2.

Would that mean it's possible to unlock the boot loader too?
Checking out the Atrix threads I came across this...
[MOD] Webtop Via HDMI Without a Dock *NEW* Added support for 4.5.91 (Untested) *NEW*
Would that be possible to bake into an X2 ROM? I'm not quite sure if the webtop function on the atrix is software or hardware based.

No. The bootloader is signed. Even the international [Atrix] users couldn't use the ATT/USA bootloader, one had to be made specifically for them.

I bought an X2 a few weeks ago because it was available to me for $50 (yeah, I'm. Cheap). I really love it (except for the physical buttons (wtf?)) and I really wanted something larger than my Incredible. However after reading threads for a few weeks it just really seems the development for the X2 is being past over for older equipment (i.e. my Viewsonic G Tab?) & newer phones. Did I pick the wrong phone??
I'm not crazy techie, so I don't know the complexity, but the Droid, the Droid X & the Droid 2 have been cracked. Did Motorola really go to so much trouble making the X2 so different that it is much more difficult to crack or are the efforts to crack this phone being passed over for some reason? Do I just need to avoid Motorola phones in the future?
Like I said I'm not a very technical, but have contributed (donation-wise) to multiple ROMs I used on my Incredible & gTab & I just thought I would see similar flexibility on the X2 by now, so I just want to know if I need move on from the X2 or not?
The 512mb of RAM is what made me leave this phone. It requires too many hacks/scripts to even run properly.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
Yeah, I don't really run that much and I regularly see only about 3-9MB avail. ;(
I'm starting to think this is a middle of the road phone that I should have just past by & it seems the developers think so as well. Guess I should have researched more, not been so cheap & been less impatient.
Well I'm cheap, so I'll need to wait for better pricing on the latest phones, but if Motorola is going to be such a problem, then I guess I need to go with Samsung or HTC.

This phone does suck for lack of actual ROMs not based on stock. However, the RAM is not as big an issue compared to other Motorola phones with 1GB (i.e. Atrix, Atrix2, Photon, Bionic, Droid RAZR) because, if I recall, their webtop service digs into that RAM anyway. It is a joke though that some of our RAM is taken up by the Tegra 2.
However, I am impressed with Tegra's hardware acceleration for web and Flash. It does seem to load web pages quickly, but I don't have other dual-core phones to compare to.

the lack of non-stock ROMs is partially because of the bootloader. The other reason is because of lack of interest.
Droid X, 2, 2 Global all still have locked bootloaders (I believe), yet a lot of custom ROMs including CyanogenMod and MIUI. Not sure if all the dual-core Motorolas are unlocked, but I know some are.

You talking about me? Or the newbs?
I was able to trade my dx2 for an incredible 2 and the difference is astounding. The dx2 has good hardware and amazing build quality but a lot of the major selling points of the phone don't mean anything. Qhd is a gimmick, as is dual-core IMO. Nothing is built to take advantage of it, including Android.
The best thing about the dx2 was the build quality and feel which is second to none. Everything about the hardware is more refined than my INC2. Eclipse is a great ROM too and makes this device worthwhile.
All in all, I think this phone has a chance at being everything that the x was but it is going to require more people to stand up.
Bottom line: if you want a phone for a specific ROM/kernel, do your research before you spend your cash. Your response to your device will be based on your expectations.
[Sent from my INC2]
The other issue, with the rate the new "bigger badder" phones are popping up, Dev's can't keep up, nor afford to buy every phone on the block. This Android runs 2.2.2, the next runs 2.3.5, the next runs 4.0.1, you get the point. These 1 man teams like Nitro are insane working on 3/4 phones at a time, and building their rom at a pace that keeps up with Android builds and hardware differences. Not to mention the continued support despite the pace of new phones being released. If you want everything under the sun, buy a phone everyone is interested in. Look how ridiculous the Galaxy Nexus forum is already and the phone was just ANNOUNCED weeks ago, not even released yet. We have what we have over here, and complaining about it doesn't help anything. Short of unlocking the BL ourselves and enticing devs by buying them the phone, we probably are not going to get more than the handful of ROMs and support we currently have.
The newly released Eclipse 1.2 and Liberty 3 RC1 are fantastic. This is how the X2 shouldve have been out of the box. Liberty final is coming soon and that'll be it till we get ICS. My phone is now almost as smooth as an iphone.
Also, use the following apps:
Go Launcher
Opera
Quickpic
ES File Explorer
ROM Toolbox
Handcent
I'm installing Eclipse 1.2 now. It looks great.

That's because it IS great and every update gets even better.
don't forget to customize your phone to make it run how you want. Don't feel limited in what this phone can do/handle.
A custom launcher can make a lot of difference in how you phone feels.
I LOVE go launcher ex. Lots of themes and home screen options. Different screen transition animation(even in app drawer..sphere animation is sick)
Right now im still using the launcher that came wit 1.2eclipse..it works smooth and looks good.
Just throwing in my 2cents but the previously mentions about just buying on cool specs is always going to backfire. And the other point about the devs not being able to keep up with the phones is the second major issue.
I got "upgraded" to the DX2 from my DX by insurance and I have run almost every rom I could. After the time I spent with my DX it was as fast as this phone is and there was way more choice of hacks and roms. I have to give serious props to Nitro, the Liberty crew and Navendrob (hope I spelled the name right) because they have done some great work. But unfortunately by the time all their hard work is finally paying off the majority of us will be on the next phone.
To bad more people can't afford to donate to devs so they can have new toys to hack on....
I saw a post for the Droid Bionic and Droid 3, recently. It is the "[Alpha4] Ics4Bionic Preview" thread on the droidforums.net forums. I can not link it here since I am new and have less than 8 posts (search it on Google).
In short, they both got an Alpha version of an ICS ROM. As far as I know, neither got the ICS OTA update yet. And, as far as I can tell, both still have a locked bootloader. Still, they seem to be running an ICS ROM with Android 4.0.1. How is this possible? Without a bootloader, we don't have the ability to load a custom kernel, right? But then, how did these devs load Android 4.0.1 (aka ICS) on the Bionic and Droid 3?
Also, I was wondering, if Moto and Verizon don't plan to show this phone some love and release an ICS OTA update, can we still get it somehow in the form of a port by some dev?
i honestly don't get all the hype of Ice cream sandwich

From the buzz around the Net there are a few devs working on ICS ROMs for the X2. I'm not entirely sure about a leak or port of the fw, but I know from nitroglycerin33's twitter he has been working on a re-vamp of the Eclipse ROM with tons of ICS touches and tweaks. So look out for that.

I haven't. heard any tegra 2 phone that is confirmed to get ics
Akaik, droid 3 is using ti omap4 which has different gpu than x2
If thats the case, then it is possible that x2 wont have gpu acceleration seeing no tegra 2 device is confirmed to have.
Even atrix 4g which is heavily marketed and have twice the ram of x2 isnt confirm either
Which would make ics kinda pointless
I am more interested on the blue hue camera fix and camcorder autofocus for x2 more than anything else

Exactly, stuff that really doesn't matter though, like the on-screen buttons, I think would have no place on a physical keyed phone like the x2. Motorola, if they are planning anything at all, should have it announced at least by January.
I don't think we will get an official update to ics. Just a ported rom. Essentially it would just be the updated ui and maybe a few performance tweeks. If you want to get the full experience of what 4.0 has to offer, you will have to get a phone built for it.

Sucks it's ICS only. Any ideas on why it took them so long to get the ball going for this on Android? I assume ICS got the first release because of hardware acceleration, but you'd think they'd have a previously working version looooong ago.

That's because ICS was a major upgrade from Gingerbread, especially at the kernel level. It was more of a rewrite than an upgrade.
Hence, this is looking for ICS libraries. It's possibly also looking for an ICS kernel which we don't have AND won't have unless Verizon decides to release ICS for the X2.
We are at the mercy of Verizon on this one.
Remember, CM9 will still have the GB kernel, not an ICS one since we cannot replace the kernel due to the locked bootloader. Again, at the mercy of Verizon AND Motorola on the locked bootloader.
I've been waiting for Chrome on Android for the entire time I've had an Android (about a year and a half). I just came across an article about on another website, read the whole thing with excitement, and then shot a baby when I read it was only for ICS. WTF?! That's very disappointing to me. Any thoughts as to why they did that? Maybe because it's beta and wanted limited exposure at first?
If they just now started working on getting chrome out then it really doesn't make sense to release it on gingerbread and ics. I would expect that it would be released for their newer os rather than the one that is going to be phased out. Maybe once they get all the bugs worked out they will release a version usable on gingerbread, so phones that won't be updated, or even new phones that aren't as powerful as the phones sporting ics, will be able to use it.

Because we are stuck on the gingerbread kernel, CM9 may not work unless Motorola releases ICS for DX2. As stated earlier, apk needs libraries from the ICS kernel. The only other option is to hack the actual apk.
