I wan't to install CM7 and I read this instructions:
_________________________________
Instructions:
First time flashing CyanogenMod 7 to the Samsung Galaxy S II, or coming from another ROM?
Root the device and install ClockworkMod Recovery. Instructions are available here.
Perform a NANDroid backup of your current ROM.
Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device.
Perform a factory reset.
Flash CyanogenMod.
Optional: Install the Google Apps addon package.

I don't get the "Format the system"... and "Perform a factory reset" part
this means to do a cache, data and dalvik? and THEN perform the flash?
thx

If only there was a thread for this kind of thing already. Why did you feel the need to create a new thread, when you're quoting the one you should be posting in anyway?
It also says flash this build only if you know what you are doing. You might want to heed the warning.
Anyway, it means do a full wipe of your system, i.e. factory reset from within ClockworkMod Recovery.

How to perform a "wipe"?

Really easy question (I hope!):
I want to flash MoDaCo 2.2, coming from a stock rom the instructions say a wipe is MANDATORY.
Question: How do you do a wipe?
Solved! Wipe / factory reset option was in the recovery.

Didn't get option to wipe before rom install?

Hi - first time trying to root. I successfully rooted, installed Entropy's Kernel, and I thought successfully installed TurkbeyRom (I don't think this is a question specific to this rom, so I"m posting here...).
After booting back up, I get this message: " The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly". This takes out my wireless signal, and keeps popping up with the error even when clear that screen out.
I realized that I didn't do any sort of data wipe before installing this rom...could that be the issue? I was under the impression that when installing them, it asked if you would like to wipe data, and it didn't.
My question is - if I wipe the data now, how much will I lose? Obviously I don't care about apps/contacts/etc..I'm wondering how far it'll set me back in the rooting process. Meaning if I wipe, will it completely wipe out my kernel...etc.
Thanks!
Boot into cwm and wipe data factory reset...then see if it fixes the issue. It wont go backwards in the root process

Please read before posting. Check the FAQ question [21].
- ROM install doesn't ask you to wipe, you have to do it yourself. (FAQ [21] has steps how to do it in CWM. For that, it is assumed that you followed this guide all the way through.
- any type of wipe will NOT remove your kernel. Wiping will remove stuff like your apps/contacts/etc
Wipe data/factory reset will remove any user installed applications and personal settings that have been set since the flash. It will not make any changes to the kernel or system partition, so the rom will be just like if you wiped first and then flashed the rom. That should solve any issues, but if there are still problems after the wipe, then try flashing the rom again.
Most roms here don't do an automatic wipe, afaik. You must do the wipe first, usually from ClockworkMod Recovery. It is always recommended to wipe when changing from one rom to another, from stock to any rom, etc. You can usually get by without a wipe when doing a minor upgrade of the same rom, assuming there is not change of base within the rom.
Thanks guys. It works perfectly now after wiping.
Sorry about not seeing that in the FAQs. I did look there, but I must have had a different "question" in mind than "[21] Install Custom ROM from CWM" and glanced past that one.

[Q] Will a full wipe in recovery wipe the rom, too?

I'm selling my phone and wonder if a full wipe will take out the rom too. Any takers on this noob question?
No, a full wipe will erase only the apps installed (and its data too), but the cROM will persist.
Thanks for the help, Rober
select mounts and storages and wipe(format) system.
that depends on the rom really. Doing a factory reset on some custom rooms will clause a boot loop as it removes some files need for the rom. Best bet would be to do a full wipe and reinstall the rom before you reboot.

About ICS Update

I have a P7500 with Overcome v2.3.1 installed, and I want to install the Stock ICS rom from this topic.
What is the better way to install it? Can I just flash it over my current rom with recovery? Or do I have to flash it with Odin? If possible, post a link with the better procedure.
Thanks!
Just flash it in recovery.
Make sure to wipe completely. Such as cache, dalvick, factory reset.
The typical procedures when installing a new ROM.
Installation Instructions
Download ROM and put on SD Card (Obvious but it must be said)
Boot into CWM Recovery and perform a FULL WIPE!!! (Wipe data factory reset, wipe cache, and then wipe dalvik cache!!!)
IMPORTANT!!! YOU MUST PERFORM THE WIPE PROCESS BEFORE FLASHING THIS ROM!!!
Flash ROM
Reboot!!! Done!!!

Wipe rom after wiping everyrging in recovery

Hello, i want to decrypt my phone and need a bit of help. i saw that i need to wipe and format daata to decrypt my phone. what i am not sure about is if i wipe everything in the recovery is the rom i used before still on the phone or do i have to reflash it?
You are most likely using TWRP recovery. To decrypt your phone, boot into recovery, then press wipe. Select "Format data". Type "yes", as instructed to do so. At this point, your internal storage will be wiped, so make a backup! This will NOT wipe your ROM (you delete it, if you wipe your system partition). Instead, it will wipe your data - just like a factory reset.
After this, I do recommend you flash DFE (if you are planning to root your phone, first install Magisk, then DFE). It's been deprecated some time ago, however it was necessary for my device; for the recovery to work properly.
