Am I the only one with dark spots scattered on my screen? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Granted they are only visible at the lowest brightness and against a gray color such as the notification menu. Noticed this like two weeks ago and its starting to get on my nerves. Couldent prove it to a atnt rep in daylight and a lit store. They wanted 35$ to exchange it.. But i feel like this is a defect. Might try to go to the store at night and make one come outside with me. But yeah it looks like my screen has been riddled with birdshot. Like its bleeding. Like someone took a pen and stabbed it.

Know "issue" on many SGS IIs. Huge thread not long ago. Search for a thread with defective screen in the title.
As long as you don't stare at dark grey pictures in dark rooms and caves you should be okay.
Edit: Here is the thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294378
There is another thread linked in the later pages for a thread about the international version.

My dad and I both bought the phone from Target almost at the same time. His had one single spot in the bottom left corner that could only be seen against a certain shade of grey (the grey that comes up in the android market while it is loading is the perfect color). Mine didn't have any spots at all under any circumstances. He went back to Target and showed them the spot using the android market's loading screen and they exchanged it for him immediately without any problems or charge.
It isn't normal and I suggest you don't wait to exchange it so At&t can't tell you that you are past the return date or that you have to pay. Definitely a problem, wish you the best of luck

How bad is the screen burn in?

I just recently bought a refurb S2 from ATT as an upgrade. I also just read up on how these screens quickly burn out and leave imprints from static images. So for you guys that have had this phone since launch, how bad is it? Is it even noticeable?
I saw this video and it looks pretty terrible : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdbTuMamqSA
Wow that's bad! Best way to protect yourself is to get a screenprotector...
Honestly, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Burn in is about the same on most display panels. You would have to leave you screen on permanently for extended periods of time to experience anything like what the host of that video is talking about. This is the first I've even heard of it and I've had the same gs2 since launch.

Don't fret it man, I've had my captivate since launch day and have yet to experience any screen burn it.
I bought my phone the day it released. I use my phone a lot and I have yet to see what you shared with that Video on my phone. I think you'll be alright.

Uhhhhhhhh. No.
Sent from my coffee pot.
Mine has some slight burn in in the status bar, nothing really major but it's noticeable on all blue or light gray backgrounds and low brightness.
At first it drove me crazy but you kinda get used to it and I now don't mind it.
By the way, the i9100 forum has more topics on this if you want a reference.
i got my refurb from AT&T a little over a week and a half ago and my screen is pretty bad in low light conditions. i dunno if its screen burn in but there are noticeable blotches on the screen when dark images are shown. luckily you cant really see it during normal conditions.
The only devices I've ever seen with burn-in are store display units - which are kept with the screen on nearly all the time displaying the same damn thing.

The SG2 is especially bad about this since they usually don't play any "demo" on that model in the stores, the phone is kept on the home screen all hours of the day and night, or at least that's what the AT&T reps told me

After a few months I noticed that the the color is slightly off in full screen apps where the notification area is. I do tend to keep the screen on quite a bit though.

That isn't burn in. It's just variance during the manufacturing process.

Same here, got it release day and have had no problems. I usually keep auto brightness on but towards the dim side. Screen is plenty bright anyways.
I can vouch for amoled screens getting some burn in if you're not careful. My nexus one has a permanent mail box burned in from a text message reminder app that I used to use that would keep the screen awake with that static image. I'm sure all screens will do this though and I'm just more careful with this phone

The ICS launchers have caused burn in on my screen because of the app drawer launcher. You don't notice it unless you are on low light levels with a grey image though.

Black level in S3 compared to S2

Anyone noticed that S3 when used with a black wallpaper, its not totally black? Seems that the backlight is still on for blacks compared to S2 which is totally black.
S3 seems kinda grey with black...almost LCD like kinda black.
Do have a try in a dark room. I was surprised. Maybe you too
Will be interested to try this, that slightly greyish hue to blacks was one of the things I disliked about the Nexus screen.
....
I'll be happy with my screen...because it is beautiful and big.... sorry you guys need to find every reason to b*tch about an amazing phone ... I don't examine my phones screen while it shows complete white or black screens in the dark ... I use it and watch people marvel at it.
No one ever says to me, "that has a yellow tint to it from here"

It's called being critical. There are a number of things I dislike about my One X. No phone is perfect and if we're not critical and express our dislikes, chances are HTC/Samsung may not fix them with software updates/newer models.
I'm more interested in the potential black clipping issues like on the Galaxy Note. That was unacceptable.

Amoleds don't have a backlight. Has Samsung toned down the black levels to alleviate black crush and clipping issues?

The true test is to turn off the lights and pull up your contact list. The background should be as black as night. If it is, then your wallpaper isn't really black -- find a better one.

just checking if anyone have the same experience.
Both my galaxy s and my s 2 never goes completely black if I watch them in complete darkness. Even when the phone is shutting down and doesn't display anything at all. And strangely enough they emit around the same brightness level. As the phones turn of completely, the hue disappears. Even black areas are being powered and I think it's by design. Or maybe slight component variations.

I think that black level is not that great in SGS3 when used in dark room. TBH SGS1 had better blacks.

Do the following and u will see the blotches or black ink drops.
I posted this on the sgs 3 in pakistan thread and one person confirmed the issue :
"Download Paint Pro its free and open a black background which covers whole the screen and then go in a dark room.... Can u tell me if there are any black blotches on screen example the screen will be in two tones of black or is it perfect black... this was an issue with two sgs2 which i had and also with galaxy nexus... The resaon its an issue because when u r browsing the web say late at night with screen filter enabled u can actually see the black blotches...."
Secondly the issue was only in sgs 2, note and galaxy nexus...have owned all these mobile.. its not really a big issue just was annoying sometimes... sgs 1 had no such issue

Galaxy S3 BLACK INK Spots HELP!!

on my new galaxy s3 i have noticed in dark backround in dark room i have them bloody annoying black spots. i have recearched it but it only says its a common problem for amoled screens. i have about 8 of these spots one which is huge. only noticable in dark room using black screen. do i get replacement or will that just be a waste of my time?
Let me recap
- you're in a very dark room
- you're watching a black screen
There's an easy hardware-fix to this problem; shortly press the button on the right side of the screen and the blotches will disappear, while the rest of the image (read: black screen) remains intact. [/IRONY]
It's, as you found out, a common sight on AMOLED however it's not an issue. These pixels are simply darker than the others.
Galaxy S3 black ink spots
ok thank you makes sense. but buying a $1000 phone you would not expect something like this. so is this a software or hardware problem sorry for askng??
return it get a new one.
i was planning to but how am i going to prove to the retailer of my problem? first of all it will need to be a very dark room which is unlikely in a shopping mall unless he throws a blanket over his head lol. second of all some people see these things more easily than others, the staff member might not be able even in the right conditions to spot any marks....
Kick his ass and make him go check it in the toilet roms. Tell him not to forget to turn the lights off lol
i wish i could but then he will charge me for rape lol. seriously though im starting to think that if i get a new one it mght even be worse
sell it get the htc one x

I too found 2 dots on my phone. I returned it immediately, got a new one after a week, found 3 dots now . I dont know what to do now.
Even if you return it a million times you'll still get some...
According to supercurio it's a software issue (trigger voltage slightly too low or something like that) and will be fixed with his upcoming 'Display Expert' app
I had some on my S2 and now on my nexus.. To prove it you can download an app called LCD Text (AMOLED) from the market (it has the logo of an RGB circle pattern) and then set it to full brightness and black screen, you will notice them very quickly.

yea well as i mentioned seems though swapping for new one might help or it might just make the problem worse. i think its a factory fault. i mean it does not efect the phone abilities at all but its dam anoying???

Black spots in screen

Anybody here have black spots in their screen?
Its only noticeable when the room is dark and the screen is dark.
For example, when I'm about to go to bed all lights off and I read stuff here on xda using the dark theme. I notice some black spots in the screen. They're everywhere in mine and its annoying.
Can you guys try it and let me know if I'm not the only one.
To see it better try using screen filter app from the market and lower the brightness.
Download the picture and open it with gallery. Zoom in to fill up the whole screen. Let me know if you guys have this too

Yeah, at this point it's pretty much normal.
You should of seen all the fuss people made about the S2 and even donated a phone to a well known dev to try and somehow fix it only to never get anything back from that dev and everybody's phone still remained the same. Lol.
Some might have it more than others, but at the end we have no choice but to deal with it unless you want to get a different phone.

I finally got around to testing mine last night, too, and I got lucky as I couldn't detect any ink blotches whatsoever. Even when they are there, they're not noticeable in regular conditions.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Download a completely black image from google images or wherever.
2) Open it fullscreen, turn your phone off, turn the lights off.
3) Wait 10 minutes for your eyes to adjust to pitch black darkness, then turn your phone back on with the black image displayed
4) Check the screen for non-uniformity
I have the problem as well. It does suck, but for me it's not really worth having to go through the exchange steps to get a different one.
I always wondered about them but figured it was just normal I have a big one dead center of the screen. Kinda like a target. Lets hope not for that reason though
guess, I got lucky. My first S3 had 3 spots. The new one is clean!
I'm definitely disappointed with the blacklevels on this display - at least when viewed in extremely dark environments.
I have 1 quite significant black line, and a few dots too. Bleh... wonder what's changed since the S1 screens - black levels were WAY better, and none of this ink marking.
I noticed the black dots, too, but I was able to make them go away with some carefully applied Liquid Paper. No more black dots. Does anyone else have a problem with white dots?

Black Line on Screen?

Just got back my 2nd Galaxy Note II. The first had this same issue of a black line appearing on the screen in certain colours, whether it be black or light greys. I figured it was a fluke and got it replaced as soon as I got it. Now I got my second one and it is in the same spot as the old one.
I am starting to wonder if this is a known issue or just a defective batch. I have been searching on here and other Note 2 owners from other carriers have noted they have had this issue, but nothing extra.
Just want to know if this is isolated or not, going to get my 3rd Note 2 and if this issue is still there I am about ready to jump to another model.

I have some on my phone as well. It only appears when I am in a very dark room looking at a black or very dark grey screen. My phone has 4 or 5 of them, each being about 1/2 an inch long and 1/8 inch wide (like spaghetti noodles). Weird thing is, under normal or even dim lighting you can't see it, and it does not affect any of the colors at the affected portion.
Best way to see if you have it is to open up your camera app, cover your camera lens and take a picture. Look at this noisy black photo in a pitch black room and you might be able to see spaghetti thick noodles of affected areas where the screen does not display the noise and appears black.
At this point I don't know whether I want to bring the phone in for warranty service as it does not affect usage under normal conditions. Although I could see it being annoying when watching a movie on a plane.
Is the line dead center? Are you guys using a screen protector? I think I might have the same problem but I have yet to remove the screen protector I installed when I got the phone. If you download screen filter from the play store and set it to 15% it shows up real easy late at night.

Every super amoled screen I've used has had this issue. Some were dots, some were splotches, others were partial lines or full lines. If I can't see it during normal use, it doesn't bother me.

I ended up sending back the first 2 Galaxy Note devices that I was sent. The thirds has no lines nor does it have dots on the screen. Finally perfect
I use my note 2 everyday so at the moment it would be hard for me to do an rma unless I could cross ship it.
