PlayStation Store Game Reviews for Tablet S - Sony Tablet S

Coolboarders - Not worth it
I just blew $6 on Coolboarders. I remembered playing Coolboarders 2 on the original PS, so thought this was a safe bet to try out the new PlayStation store. The graphics are kinda choppy, and the controls are really difficult. I'd hold off if you have your eye on Coolboarders, at least until the tablet works with a PS3 controller.

Its annoying because I have like 20 PSone games on my PS3 that I would have to repurchase to play on the tablet.

If anyone could rip /data/data/PACKAGE_NAME/libs/lib*.so for a PSN store game or get it out of the APK, PM me. I want to know how much the emulator has changed and if it would be more compatible with psxperia.

I downloaded WILD ARMS last night and played it for about 2 hours, I remember it being one of my favorite PS titles back in the day. Pretty fun, basic, linear RPG. Controlling the game with the on screen controller is very simple in this classic style rpg, but I could see how it could get more difficult on the faster-paced games since it's hard to keep a close eye on your thumbs while you're playing. That being said, animations were smooth and, although not improved much from the PS days - as expected - everything played perfectly. Would give 4.5/5 stars! I'll probably be downloading syphon filter and maybe midevil today!

yifanlu, if I knew how I might...
I watched a youtube video of someone playing Crash Bandicoot on the Sony Tablet S using a Logitech wired basic controller and every button worked, so I pulled mine out, plugged it in, and everything worked perfectly, I am excited. So I download a couple of games, start them up, and you know what? Not 1 of them worked with the controller perfectly (either the up down left right worked and the buttons didn't, or vice versa...). Yeah, I didn't expect for the Logitech controller to work, but after Crash Bandicoot, I was hopeful. Needless to say I don't like the button on screen style that Sony is insisting we use (until Playstation controllers are compatible).
I wonder when some good games are going to become available - I like RPG's so am anxious about FF7 (and all the FF titles, really), but there are many games I like on the PSX (Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal, Tony Hawk, Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and on and on I could go...).
To me, a 32 year old (old school gamer) I can't enjoy playing a game without a gamepad, and never will...

Word. I don't care how "livable" touch controls can be. No physical buttons = fail.

I know it's Sony, and everyone is trying to make bigger profits, but sometimes you got to give a little to get a lot. This is out right before Christmas season and by offering some nice incentives might make this more appealing to buyers (and existing owners - you know, word of mouth).
It'll never happen, but I wish they would make it like an emulator so we could have more options, although it would probably require root. Funny thing about root with this, I had the manager at the Sony store in the mall tell me that "it will not void the warranty if I was to root the Sony Tablet S." Granted there isn't a program to root it, yet, that I know of, but would like the extra versatility it offers.
So I ended up buying Hot Shots Golf, Destruction Derby, and Wild Arms - none of them worked with either of my (wired) controllers (I have 2, both Logitech, one with the joysticks and one without, both had the issues I mentioned in my previous post so I guess you could say they half worked...). The graphics weren't bad, maybe a little better than the original Playstation, but it's been so long since I played on one I couldn't say - I never played a psp.
I just checked out of curiosity and once you buy a game (now all are $5.99), it appears that you can download it at any time - in case you don't have the memory on your tablet, or need to delete a game to make more room.
I bought a Seagate GoFlex portable 500gb hard drive at Wal Mart on sale for $50 a while back yet I have Windows 7 and it was formatted to NTFS (with Windows 7 you can't format to FAT 32 which is needed to be compatible with the Sony Tablet S). I finally took the time to find a program to do so, so now I can store all my music and video's (too bad not emulator's and roms...) and have access to them on the go. What else might I be able to do with an external hard drive and this tablet?
Does anyone know when more games are going to be released on the Sony Store?

Did anyone tried with Xbox360 USB controller?

I'm using the Wiimote, works like a charm..
use Wiimote controller app from market and you should be able to play every game, even the Psx games. (i use the Wiimote when playing NES games trough Nes.emu)
i saw on youtube when using the Logitech wired game controller the played Crash Bandicoot with a Psx emulator, think it was called FPSe (google it)
Wfr Peter

Stay away from hot shot golf 2. Delay on swing and just not good. I remember when it came out for my ps. Loved it. This is the same game but the touch screen gives it a delay and it just Doesn't do it.

I refuse to buy games from the PS Store on this until they properly integrate it with purchases I have already made on my PSP/PS3 I am not paying again for the same game I have already bought previously.

Think GTA 3 will run on the NC?

Was on engadget today and saw that rockstar is going to release GTA 3 for the following devices.
Apple iOS Devices: iPad 1 & 2, iPhone 4 & 4S, iPod touch 4th Generation
Android Phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x
Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive
Think we have a shot or not enough power?
We definitely don't have enough power because we can barely run any of the higher end games (shadowgun) I'm sure that well be able to get it running, but probably terribly. Also this game doesn't even have that great of graphics... just bad optimization
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
Shadowgun runs fine for me on one of the later nightlies overclocked to 1.2ghz. I also have GangStar running with no issues to.

GT racing, Asphalt 6, Modern Combat 2, Sacred Odyssey all run great for me. That being said with Gameloft already having Gangstar (which runs great BTW) there isn't much need for an actual GTA. GTA3 might be worth it if there was a way to put the Real GTA mod on it.
fine, fine maybe shadowgun was a bad example but what about 9mm, riptide, fast five, dungeon defenders, etc. those don't even force you to have a dual core device... remember we're pushing 1024x600(thats 614,400) pixels of 3D on old hardware... also I'm not so sure about the definition of "it runs fine" these days. Some people seem to convince themselves that things run great when they're not (myself included)

How did you get the crosshair in the middle, the damage indication, and the dragable looking area to fill the whole screen??? I've tried tons of different versions to no avail I've even looked at your thread and used the version listed to no avail. thanks in advance
yea gangstar makes gta3 look kind of dated.
I did notice a bunch of slowdowns trying high quality games on my Nook however a second later I noticed I was running on the conservative governor and facepalmed myself.
Switched to performance governor and everything was a breeze...
One way or another, we won't know until it's released, right?
I wouldn't be surprised if it runs. The NC is a little gem. That said, how is it going to playable on a touchscreen? And... an honest question... is GTA III really that fun? I just picked it up in a steam pack and it didn't take too long for me to move onto Vice City (and then stop playing that a little while later). It'll probably be more impressive to run on a phone/tablet but it felt like an early tech demo compared to a lot of "modern" games.

The entire screen is bound to controls, take a look at the picture of it on engadget... its a little overwhelming
Touchscreen controls urgh...
I still pair a PS3 Controller via Bluetooth every time I play PS1 / N64 games on my Nook... I really hope they add Bluetooth Controller support to the game.
Yeah, having real controller support would be nice. I did see the screenshots, and it's just really hard to play games with a virtual d-pad and even just *two* buttons (to me), let alone 6 or 8, especially when it includes what are supposed to be shoulder buttons.
On a side note, I mucked around a little with the onlive app, and that suffers from the same thing (the virtual controls). That said, OnLive does have newer, more compelling games, although it requires a constant, good data connection.
Nook Color seems to me to be able to push Dreamcast level graphics at 1024x600. Most games with that level of graphics seem to run at around 20-30fps at best.
The main reason GTA3 is so much more demanding than seems reasonable is that it's a sandbox game with a large, open world. It's not all that much different than say Elder Scrolls.
Game is out now and market says it should work on the NC. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rockstar.gta3 Anyone got it to work?
It hangs Nook dead rght after intro movies. CM 7.1.0 Stable.
With chainfire nvidia plugin, screen stays black upon launching the app
soooo I take it as a no go. Darn. Well it works on my electrify but as stated earlier the controls take up way to much room. I'll try a wiimote I guess.
Anyone have any luck getting this to run? Would think it would be possible to and to control it with a PS3 controller connected via bluetooth.
Got it to work! Download GTA 3 version 1.1, use chainfire 3D and set default plugin to POWERVR, awful cellphone video below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKN9QRGq09E
EDIT: Will test more in the morning, jump to 1:00 to see 30 seconds of "gameplay" before I flip the car
why do we have to use the powervr plugin? nook color actually has a powervr gpu
I didnt need any plug in. I installed CM7 last night and gta was in "my apps" and it runs better than on my shift. Lol

OnLive released for Andrdoid

OnLive's gaming app was released today for Android... you can find it on the market at
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.onlive.client
I don't have my NC with me, but I tried it out on my phone. It works at least! I didn't really get to play much but hey, it's there
FYI, there is a special controller that is coming later this month too (tomorrow?), although it's supposed to be $50. Hopefully it at least comes with a free game.
PS. if you sign into onlive through the app, you can get Lego Batman for free.
Anyone have the .apk file so we can try it out? It doesn't show up in the market for my T-mobile Samsung galaxy s 2
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
People in the article on engadget mentioned it was posted at http://onlivefans.com. I didn't find it just by looking quickly, but maybe try a search
I got it, ill post it soon. It's running laggy on my NC but I bet its my crappy 3mb internet connection, since i keep getting a message that my connection dropped lower than the minimum
Here is the apk hope it works
Ok, cool. I'm interested in the new controller they have coming out. I did not find much information on if you could use other controllers, but it sounded like "no" for Android: http://onlivefans.com/showthread.php?14160-The-Controller-FAQ
I haven't been able to try it on my NC yet, but on my phone the graphics were fairly blurry but it was mostly pretty responsive (just navigating the UI and playing the first couple seconds of Lego Batman). I was on 3G because Verizon's having another 4G outage apparently, so I'll have to see how it goes on my home wifi or 4g when it comes back.
Anyone having issues with not finding in Market or the apk not side loading likely can go to onlive.com/hardware_mobile and click the Market link that shows there. Had to change my dpi to 160 to install but worked great after that. I had to go this route on my 2 bionics and the NC.
It runs great on CM 7.1.0.1 (Stable)
I tried playing games on my Nook Color like N.O.V.A. 2 HD and after getting my @$$ handed to me in the game because the NC wasn't fast enough to respond to my controls I tried the OnLive game service and I have to say it's pretty sweet.
I didn't notice any lag whatsoever when I played a few minutes of LEGO: Batman and I was using the on-screen touch controls the whole time since I don't have their universal game controller.
I'm not a serious gamer but my 5 year old is really getting into it. He already is monopolizing time on my other android devices playing games. Since LEGO: Batman is his favorite at the moment I've been forced to drag out the old Playstation 2 console out of the closet. Now that I've got this to work on my NC I can get rid of the PS2 finally and contain all of his gaming on the NC.

[Q] which PSX emulator works best

Now that PS3 controllers work natively, has anyone had experience with PSX emulators on this tablet? which one works best?
I ask before I pay rofl
I use FPse, it works fine, but has sound problems in some games. With FPse I use not original sony controller.
I did not have time to test psxperia version 2. Version 1 did not work.

anyone tried FPSe or PSX player w/ official PS3 joypad via bluetooth?
Tempted to drop the cash on FPSe anyway but if it doesn't work with the joypad then I'll be p1ssed (can't see why not as long as it supports manually assigning buttons).
I swear I bought a PSX emulator in the distant past, ran like a dog on my Nexus One, forgot about it, now can't find it anywhere. Could have been removed like SNESoid. That policy is ---- terrible, at least let us DL the last available version for those who've PAID the money lol.

appreciate it, I'll be getting back to wifi tomorrow (on holidays now so only intermittently available, defo not in a comfortable system tinkering setting rofl) so would appreciate if you let me know how well it works (or not).
SNES emulation w/ PS3 joypad is perfect with SNESdroid (after a bit of manual settings), PSX emulation would be the ultimate.
I don't understand why Sony hasn't gotten off their butts and placed the entire PSX catalogue or as much of it as they can legally manage onto the official PS Store channels, and at a better price point - those ROMs are free money basically. I would happily pay official prices for ease of use/DL etc. if they had a better selection and pricing. (e.g. 3-5 USD per game). Why there's only ten or so titles right now I have no idea (or is there more on the store on Xperia play?).
If they managed it they could basically take an almighty crap on even the apple store's games catalogue in one swoop, the games are all already done and most of them work fine via emulation already.

I have tested to install the FPSE Emulator on my Tablet, launch the FPSE with my PS3 controller connected via bluetooth then proceed to play the game by loading the Street Fighter ROM.
Of course, you will need to disable the on-screen controller layout then configure the hardware keys then you will be able to control using the Digital Pad and Analog joystick to play the game, it is fun playing the Street Fighter game on my Tablet with the PS3 wirelessly.
market error: the item you were attempting to purchase could not be found
?!?!?!?
EDIT: figured it out, its been bloody marked as incompatible in the market for this model. I'm betting Sony had something to do with this. FWIW getting the APK (I bought it on my Atrix) and manually sideloading it works fine.
Bloody sony, typical for them to shoot themselves in the foot (memo: if you're gonna ban emulators, have more than a pathetic dozen games in your official market, and only crap ones at that rofl).
though I do swear even though I'm getting 60fps, it 'feels' way choppier, should be butter smooth but just doesn't feel like it, if I had to guess I would have said ~20-25fps. I do have framelimiter on, because if I have it off the gameplay is on super turbo faster than the human eye lol

I'm running into the same issue. It looks like it has to do with the new dual core option in the latest version (though I'm not sure why it would). I tested different settings with the option to show the fps on. With the Dual core option on it reports that i'm currently running at around 60 fps yet menus and gameplay seemed to sttutter more than they should. With the option off, it reports that I'm around 40 fps and yet menus and gameplay seem smoother. Both os these is with the framelimiter on. I used Hot Shots Golf 2 for testing.
cheers I'll try turning it off lol
edit: You're a GENIUS working great!

Compatible Games with PS3 Controller

Hi Guys,
Can anyone confirm the games which are compatible with PS3 Controller?
I am thinking of buying one..
LIST OF COMPATIBLE GAMES:
GTA3
Muffin Knight
Pool Break
Riptide GP
ShadowGun
Shine Runner
Sonic CD
Soulcraft THD
Well for my own experience, here is my two cents
psone games (ofcourse)
nes.emu (Nintendo Entertainment System)
snes9x Ex (Super Nintendo) <-- this one however I believe is removed from Market.
ColEm (Coleco Vision)
I have not had time to try any other. But I believe there is more than this that would work. It is well worth the money to buy one, if you ask me.
well, I am looking for android games which are compatible with PS3 controller..

GTA 3 works well with controller
GTA 3 works well. Button mappings are a bit different than the original but once you get the hang of them it is very playable.
Cm'on guys..please try and confirm if other good android games can b played with ps3 controller..
Sega Sonic Adventure is supported I believe..

Are you referring to sonic cd? Or is sonic adventure on the market too now? If so holy crap why can't I find it
Also you could just get n64droid, a nintendo 64 emulator. Works pretty well on the sony tablet. It allows for complete control mapping, so you could be tearing up some Zelda or Mario cart on a Sony controller .
The developer did however pull it from the market for some reason (even though he had plenty of customers like me that paid around $6 for it), so you will have to find it elsewhere. Development for it has continued even though its not on market... confusing.

I can tell you that ShadowGun is fully working (already finished), just go to setup/gamepad and map your keys
also played 3 minutes Inertia HD... not really impressed by it... but it's working
Sonic CD is definitly compatible. There are some weird things like not being able to pause in game using the controller (you have to presss the pause icon on the screen) but otherwise it works fine.
Edit: I just reread the original post and it loks like i misunderstood. I thought you were looking for confirmation on GTA and Sonic CD being compatible with the PS3 controller. When I get a chance I'll see what else I have on my tablet that I can add to you list. to note, all emulators ive tried (FPSE, Gameboid, Snesoid, Nesoid, Gensoid, GBCoid, Ataroid and Gearoid) work with the ps3 controller
Shadowgun works GREAT once you assign the buttons, but the analog sticks work natively and brilliantly.

I am unable to try out Asphalt 6 right now.
I also tried out Muffin Knight and Reckless Racing. In both games you can use the controller to play the game but you cant really navigate and select thing in menus with it

PES12 not works!!!
inviato dal mio Sony Tablet S usando Tapatalk HD
Hmm this is a great thread. I was wondering that myself.
Anyways, Muffin Knight does work with the controller... but I don't think you can use a button to jump. you have to use the up key on the dpad to jump. This makes it tough, especially when you get the double jump ability.
I have a load of games on my tablet which I'll test tomorrow. If anyone wants me to specifically try a certain game just ask. I have about 150 games purchased now and no qualms about buying more lol.
It's great to hear shadow gun works btw! I refuse to buy fps games on a touch screen because I can't control them to save my life lol. I'll list what I come up with by Friday at the latest
List of Working and non working titles
I got up early and started testing a few games. I'll include a list of non working titles as well just so everyone knows. Any notes will be in brackets after the title
NOTE: I decided to add an Almost working section in the middle of the list. Theres a couple games that nearly work 100% but a critical button doesn't work. Emailing the devs may get that fixed promptly!
WORKING
-Shadowgun
-SupaSupaX (Unable to pause with controller)
-Muffin Knight (Have to jump with up on d-pad)
-All PS1 games from the PS Store
-Soulcraft THD (Works great!!!)
-Sleepy Jack (Works....but controls are a little weird. You click the left stick to shoot and click the right stick to use the slow bomb)
-Grand Theft Auto 3
-Shine Runner
-Symphony of eternity (Although you need to click the left stick to accept combat decisions)
ALMOST WORKING
-They Need to be Fed (left/right work on dpad and analog stick, but jump doesn't!)
-Karoshi (Left/right working on dpad and stick again, but unable to jump)
-Dark Incursion (Jump and shoot are combined into the X button..powers don't work)
-Reckless getaway (Left right work, can't activate pickups)
NOT WORKING
-Pocket Legends
-Dungeon Defenders
-Bang Bang Racing THD (Drag...I can barely play this with the on screen controls)
-Dead On arrival
-Attack from outer space
-Wind up Knight
-Mike V- Skateboard Party
-Summit X Snowboarding
-Minecraft Pocket Edition
-Destinia
-Megastunt Mayhem
-Age of Zombies
-Puffle Launch
That's it for now. Is it possible for a moderator to keep a stickied post at the top of all 100% working games? If not, no big deal. We can just periodically copy/paste all working games with new additions as the last post.
How about onlive? Can anyone confirm if this works with the ps3 controller?
Has anyone tried Sonic 4 Episode 1? I'd like to know how well it works
compatible titles
thanks for this list, i'll keep my eyes open for more. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get some things out here in Kuwait, but when I get home I'll check some more ut.

android games vs handheld game consoles

Okay guys with the launch of google play users are given the ability to grasp media ranging from movies, music to android application and games no matter what device they are using.
But my question is regarding the games supplied by devs
More and more graphically intense games are put on to the market and with the help of special segments like Nvidia tegra zone, makes you wonder whether you should upgrade to a dedicated gaming device like PSVita.
If you do a rough comparison in terms of specs(of the device),price(both console and games),quality, gameplay, controls, presentation, and most of all practicality(battery utilization) what would you choose
What are your opinions?
Having had the PSP and played a few games on my SGS2 and Samsung Tablet, it's the controls on the PSP/PS Vita which win for me.
I also think will depend on the type of game you like. Shadowrun, Nova 2, Modern Combat 3 don't feel as good on android. Also racing games don't really feel like driving games but that is me.
I have been sucked in by some for strategy games and they are perfect. MMO's are probably better off as have keyboard but haven't really tried.
I am looking at the PSVita sometime in the future.
i agree hardware controls are better input methods for gaming than touch screens, and there is some art in console gaming when it comes to controlling our avatar (be it character , vehicle, ship of whatever) instead of just repeated screen tapping..i got the gameloft's "BackStab'' game..don't get me wrong it's a top notch game for mobiles but if it were a PSP/Vita game you'd have more flexibility in terms of controls, but since it's a touch based button game on a relatively small screen devs probably had no other choice than to make it simple..

Quality games controls on android is no longer an issue. Latest version of sixaxis control for android even has touch controls emulation that is sheer genius. Allows any touch game to be setup for a ps3 pad.
Only issue in my opinion is which two devices do you want to carry??
Phone+games device
OR
Phone+PS3 Pad

an handeld device has to be handeld to be and handeld deivice - if you have to put it on a desktop to use it, the screen is too small so you will need a hdmi (if you device support it) connection and a tv.
it starts to be a bit unwieldy imho, carrying a tv and a desktop in your pocket.
I have been living a cave obviously lol.
I only saw a quick demo but Sonic the Hedgehog!? I might see if I can connect my Galaxy Tab to the sixaxis controller to play Shadowrun or Nova but I don't think I would carry with me and play in the train, etc. or anywhere in public personally am a PC gamer with the odd mobile game.
Maybe if big developers get behind the platform will we see bigger budget games. Quality of games developed for consoles is different between that of phones. I wouldn't be surprised if this changes in the future though.
Original OP asked about the differences now but don't see that the playing field is the same based on the games and hardware that has come out so far.

in my opinion gaming on android is not very cool
Xperia Play owner here - best of both worlds
Actually considered the Xperia so interested about how this is going for you. Now if PS Vita games came out for the Xperia...

for me it's a matter of choosing where to play what.
for home gaming I use my PS3, for mobile gaming - my android's (Galaxy SII and Galaxytab 10.1) are wonderfull!
if I'm in a situation where I only have a few minutes, the SII is superp:
it's already in my pocket - the games installed are easy to just jump in and play for a few minutes. also great to entertain my little princess when we have to wait, and she gets restless.. the ability to use something you already have with you in your pocket is far better than having to remember to bring a console.
for longer gaming situations (travel etc.) the 10.1 offers a larger screen - and then the possibility to play more advanced games. more than advanced enough for my use. the ability to have a combined gamedevice and possibility to surf the web/check mail/etc. in one device is great, no need to bring a heavy laptop.
after I got the tab, I no longer need a laptop - I use the tab for small tasks, and a desktop computer for advanced tasks.
in all cases it comes down to using the correct device for my needs.
and the android devices more than satisfies mine

WHAT!?!?!?!
no offence but are you an idiot or just hopeless ate presenting your thoughts in a manner that makes sense.
WTF would anyone place a 4" screen across the room from them??? .......... if this is how you setup to play games on your phone no wonder your not enjoying the process.
The 1st part is idiotic enough but you then completely outdo yourself with the carry a TV and a desktop suggestion ........ because i don't want to form an even lower opinion of you than i already have, am going to regard this comment as an epically failed attempt at humour.
Please go start a poll asking how many forum users place there phone 2-3metres away to play games.
Then another asking if they think adding a desk and a 40" TV screen to their mobile kit would solve the problem ..............
WTF are they feeding kids where you live bro ?!?!?!?!?
