So, anyone know a good way to get out of a contract. Apparently you can't be grandfathered in and i want out.
I don't use tethering or Wimax so I'm good. Smartphone data is unlimited still.

As much as this doesn't affect most of us, all it's going to do is make people cancel their hotspot and gravitate towards the free tethering you can get when you root. But, in all reality, most people who pay for and use the hotspot rarely go over 5 gigs a month anyways.
yea, i guess I should not have added the hotspot, just used rooted wireless tethering. Guess sprint showed me not to try and do things there way.

You know this only puts them one step closer to making smartphone plans like this . Im well aware that they have said they will keep the unlimited data plan . But I have a feeling that will eventually fall under the "Terms and Conditions are subject to change" umbrella when it does happen LOL

LOL, I will happily pay the ETF as I jump off the Sprint bandwagon (if/when) that ever happens.
I think I enjoy Sprint's best 4G speeds in the nation but the day they loose unlimited on the phone, I'm off.

Well if you are paying attention to things, like most people have it seems to be doing this....
1. Network adds Iphone
2. Cuts unlimited Data
3. Puts in more dirty policys
4. Watches people leave their contracts
Im guessing sprint is next to start with the madness. But realistically, all of them are doing it so there's no where else to go imo.

The Mobile Hotspot/ Air Card limit was a bad move, I can understand the phone tethering limit to 5GB.
This move gives Verizon the all clear on flagging their Mobile Hotspots as the better & cheaper alternative, why by a limited 4G WiMax hotspot when you can buy a faster & $10 cheaper monthly ($50 for 5GB) LTE hotspot from Verizon?
It would be better if they grandfathered current users before the limit because now the ETF free door has been swung open, loosing more contract subscribers valued at an est. $1700 x number of mobile hotspot users, over a 2 year contract.
SMH
But no one thought to bring that possible backlash up at an investor meeting. Where I assume this deal went down.
unlimited data is next ..
Sprint no longer has the only best phones and their 4g sucks big time. If they drop unlimited on phones no one has a justifiable reason to stay with them.

This sucks!
I've rooted and circumvented Sprints Hotspots service for a year now.
Not sure if that's the way to go for me anymore.
This Verizon news really makes me appreciate Sprint's unlimited data scheme now.
But..they are cracking down on data abusers now...tracking big users and even sites visited indicating hacked tethering use and roaming totals...dropping people with excessive data use.
Concerned they'll end up saying screw it and implement data caps.
I value unlimited Sprint plans enough that, out of principle I'm considering just forking over the monthly $...perhaps getting on a favored list lol!

I guess the issue is whether you use the tethering abusively or not... I use it to provide wifi to my tablet on the road (it is used in lieu of the phone) and in the car when my kids are in the back with their notebook (once in a while). Overall my usage is consistent with a my phone usage as ...
As far as limiting it the bandwidth, they already are doing it by reducing your connection speed. Less Speed = less debit = less sharing!

I won't say it'll never happen.. But, the unlimited data is one of the few perks that brings in/keeps customers for Sprint. I haven't been treated badly by Sprint, but I've got no reason to remain loyal for loyalty's sake.
I doubt they will. Over time most data will become wireless anyway. Once all is on 4G or LTE, it won't matter the bandwidth as much. Sprint already charges more for premium data anyway. Not to mention their voice coverage sucks and the unlimited plan is what helps them keep customers. I would switch to Verizon as soon as Sprint says the unlimited plan is changing.

100% agree on all fronts.
Their CS is fantastic, bar none...but without truly unlimited data I no longer give a **** about that. If I have to pick between the big 3.....AT&T would have the fastest 3G and most pervasive 4G...Verizon would have the best "all around" pricing and fastest 4G and Sprint would have....what? The worst coverage AND crappy plans but pleasant customer service? No thanks. I'll take verizon.
...I hate AT&T with a passion. I have them for home internet service. I have never in my life been treated so poorly by a service I pay for....paying a bill over the phone or online is a gigantic pain in the ass...and I have never ever had a service shut off for paying a service IN FULL, EARLY until I had the modern-day incarnation of AT&T....and I am far from alone on that.
This is Sprint's ace in the hole...well, that and Google recently buddying up with them....but...lacking unlimited data they have no compelling reason to stick around.

As far as data usage, not really. However, it increases the potential for additional/more data usage as you might not of loaded it on your phone if that was the only option.
Personally, any reasonable usage is fine. Big difference between checking email on a tethered laptop.. and torrenting.

This pretty much describes my tethering usage, except the kids part.
I like the leaked plans from AT&T for their LTE pricing. This is based off of what Lulsec stole today, but apparently AT&T is going to go with speed tiers when their LTE is released instead of bandwidth caps, you just pay for how fast you want your internet. To me that makes more sense.

Yeah, umm, unless that torrent download is an absolute emergency (and I actually have been in that situation before...on the road at a trade show....needed a kinda huge file I had hosted at home....) you are just torrenting tethered off your phone to show off...even 4G sucks relative to even a basic cable-modem connection.....
I think the people who use 10+gb a month tethering illegally should take a step back and think about what they're doing. Just pay the price every month to tether the right way. Because once you guys really piss Sprint off, that 20gb you use every month is going to cost a fortune thanks to the tiered data policy they will enact. Then you'll be paying MORE than you would have if you had paid for the tethering.

He is part of the solution as far as I am concerned. The ETF fees are filled with greed and are only a tool to hold people hostage. If there are ways to use their contracts against them, I am all for it. What he is doing is NOT illegal. I would argue that the steady stream of contract changes that we get sucked into by default are deceptive and low on the part of sprint.
PLUS... if he gets out, that is one less customer we have to worry about on our data stream... (assuming he would have been using it if there wasn't this other out option).

Let's take this one at a time:
1) ETF's are not a way for companies to use contracts against the customer. You sign a contract because you don't want to pay $600 for a new phone. You're more than welcome to buy the phone at full price and only use month to month if you want, thereby negating the need for any contract to get involved. Don't feel like paying full price for the phone, either? Well, then you're **** out of luck.
2)No, he is not part of the solution. By him skirting his ETF, he basically paid $200 for a phone, and then is getting out of his contract ETF-free, basically making Sprint lose money on their sale of that device.
3) While it does mean one less person on the data stream, freeing up precious bandwidth for the rest of us, it is also one less customer for Sprint. One less paying customer mind you. If too many people do this, Sprint is going to have to make changes to make money, and you know what will be the next thing to go? Say goodbye to your unlimited data.
So, it's one of two ways. Either buy your phones at full price without contract, or pony up the ETF if you want to leave. Don't **** it up for the rest of us, asshole.

they won't boot you right away. It usually takes a few Billing cycles. I can see sprint eventually just charging the balls out of people you use that prl somehow.
I tried that prl a couple months ago when I needed to stream some video one evening. I must not have hit "commit changes" when changing back to 21081, and I stayed on it for over a month, using 6ish gigs of data. I have not yet heard anything from them about it luckily.

I used the 00001 prl this past week . I was in SC where apparently sprint decided "Eh we dont need any towers out here let Verizon cover it" I got tired of the phone constantly struggling for signal I just downloaded the PRL and flashed it on the phone to stabalize it some what .I mean hell the phone was going to be roaming anyways might as well give it the tower listings to get the best out of the signal I had access to . In my eyes thats Sprints issue not mine . They said they had the coverage well apparently they dont so they can chow down on the roaming charges . Maybe if they pay enough roaming charges they might get a bright idea to put a tower up in the area I was in .
Thanks for the heads up, just flashed mine and works great

I think its truely funny , I just tried the verizon prl at my home and compared it to the Sprint PRL (21081)
Verizon DL 2.01 UPL 0.75
Sprint DL 0.50 UPL 0.25
Tell me there isnt something wrong with this picture . As much as I hate to say it , all the more reason for my future transition back to Verizon . Yeah they cost alittle more but you get faster access and better coverage .
Flash 00001. Sync dropbox files back and forth from phone to DB then delete all of dropbox then do it again.. you should get your account suspended within about 5 gigs. Go sync the entire repo for ICS and then delete it and do it again. Maybe get a torrent or 9 while its going. WiFi tether everywhere for everyone. Open network with androidAP changed to maybe free internet for all. All on roaming. Sprint will drop u like a tweaker drops his rocks at the smell of bacon.

To be fair, not true. YOU can as a current Sprint customer, but if I were to have say, my wife decide to switch from Verizon to Sprint tomorrow, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY for her to join Sprint as a new customer without a 2 year contract, whether she pays $999999999999 up front for her equipment or not.

Never mind that unlimited data is going away eventually, no matter what. But hey, have fun with your crusade against the inconsequential amount of people using 00001
I was in the Droid Bionic forum and came across this ( thanks jesziicuh) . It totally works I did it on my wife's line. If you have tired data, call *611, option 4, say add a feature, talk to a representative and add unlimited 4g hot spot to your tiered data line. They upgrade your data to unlimited to accommodate the unlimited hotspot. Then log into you verizonwireless account. Go to the row where it says plan. Then click on change features. Pick your phone you just upgraded, then scroll down and remove unlimited 4g hotspot. Worked like a charm!!! My wife's data tracker on her phone now says unlimited!!!! Got to love loop holes!
Edit: This might actually take several attempts to accomplish. I have heard some people have tried upwards of 5 times before actually receiving unlimited data.
Edit2: Thanks to nomisunrider we have the actual plan code the verizon rep uses to add 4g unlimited MHS. plan code #76153 — $30 Unlimited 4G Mobile Hotspot. I would still ask for the 4g unlimited MHS first and if they give you trouble tell them you were told the plan code is 76153. Hope this helps and cuts down on the amount of calls some people have to make.

Sorry I forgot to proof read my post. Just wanted to put the info out there as fast as possible. TIERED DATA!!!
I'm pretty sure that Verizon will change your wife's plan back to tiered. Gotta love people always finding ways to exploit companies, and proceed to comaplin when the company comes up with a policy to counter. Prime example were the warranty exchanges issued by Verizon. Even if there was a minor blemish say from a manufactering issue there is a higher chance they would get on your case and charge you $300. That's thanks to people sending in phones that work but with physical damage. Ie someones dog chewed through their phone ,or they dropped the phone with the screen cracked. People exploit and then cry when the company cracks down.
If they change it back so be it. My wife was happy before, but if they don't oh well. Why should we both pay the same for data but I have unlimited and she has 4 gigs. Just cause Verizon wanted to be a bunch of D bags and be like AT&T. Your telling me you have never went to a store and bought something that was miss priced and you knew the price was wrong but still fought to get what the lower price was. Dude this is a modding forum. Not bash everyone forum. Everything in this place is about bending the rules and coming up with work arounds set in place by the carrier and maker of the phone. I called and they told me that unless I was grandfathered in with unlimited data, I could not get unlimited 4 g hotspot.
Maybe they've already caught on.
On the other forum people said it took 3-4 times sometimes before someone would do it. For me I called once the lady said ok. I don't know if it matters I had unlimited on my line so she was able to do it for my other line(my wifes phone).
Lol just got a hold of someone. I ended up getting unlimited data and Sicily hotspot for a total of 29.99 a month to think I was paying a 100 just for 20 gigs.

I rarely go to stores for major purchases so really haven't had to do the whole "rage angry customer to save a few bucks" stance yet. They're a business they want to make money, not a crime. If you don't like their policies/bundles then go to another carrier? Just saying you have your choices .
As a Verizon employee, I can promise you that the unlimited data will NOT stick. They audit accounts for things just like this, if you were not supposed to have it, the feature will be removed.
This has been going on for a few days now. I saw that one.person even talked to a supervisor and they said that yes if you get the hotspot it will give you unlimited data. Of course who knows how long it will last but it is something that is being automatically done not random employees doing it on there own.
Of course it does not.affect me as I am grandfathered in.

(memo is in the link above)
Like dominoes, Sprint's consumer-friendly policies continue to fall one at a time. Citing "high costs," the Now Network will begin discontinuing its practice of allowing customers to upgrade their phone 10-14 days prior to the official date of eligibility. According to the memo leaked by TechnoBuffalo, the program will cease to exist as of June 1st. It sounds like this policy change is an unfortunate consequence of the company's large investments in iPhones and its still-dormant LTE network. It may not be enough to convince many Sprint customers to jump ship, but this isn't the first cost-cutting measure put forth by Dan Hesse's team -- and we have a hard time believing it will be the last. We've reached out to Sprint for official comment and will update you as soon as we have word.

not sure why this is that big of a deal? is that really that much of an incentive?
unless your early eligibility window directly coincided with a major phone release (like the iphone5 which i hear has the same cloaking capability as Predator and is run by cold fusion with a display that beams directly to your brain) and you HAVE to be the first one to get it...then who cares if you have to wait until you are actually eligible for the upgrade to get it??

Yes it will definitely happen at some point. everywhere the iPhone goes eliminates the "unlimited Data Plan".
Verizon today also said that they're no longer allowing people to be grandfathered in. So no unlimited for anyone.
But i agree, this isn't that big of news too me but it is somewhat heartbreaking to see. First they destroyed the Premiere Members plan and now this.

IMO that'd be their kiss of death. It's the ONLY advantage they have compared to ATT and VZ. With all the other niggling changes (the change in how discounts are applied, the change in how shared plans are accounted for, etc) they are barely ahead of VZ in price for me (4 4G phones - what where's 4g?? - and 1 basic phone, and i can get away with 4gb data most months no problem) and if the network doesn't get better, i'm gone, let alone how fast I'd bail if they limited their unlimited...

I still do not believe that iPhone has made connection slow for others and Sprint has said (if their truth to it or not) that iPhone has not slowed down data speeds for us other phones.
iPhone is not the problem, it's people who are with VZW who obviously don't mind paying a premiere price for their phone bills. Sprint is playing catch up with these other companies and becoming more and more of a elite company. no more of this VZW>ATT>SPRINT crap. they will be the 3 headed monsters in due time

True but reverse the question, does it hurt Sprint to keep something that small of a perk?
It probably cost more money to update the staff & the system on the few minutes they took to address it.

Very possible it will. I've read an article (PCWorld, I think it was) that explained it clearly. Each carrier purchases/rents a certain amount of data spectrum. Verizon and AT&T started throttling and limiting data because usage on their respective spectrums were getting close to the limit. NOW, taking that into consideration, Sprint very literally owns/rents half of the spectrum that Verizon and AT&T do. So, what does that tell you? Eventually, even though they are not ready to state it publicly, chances are Sprint will abandon unlimited data.

True story, sir.
The thing is that Sprint always releases their flagship HTC phone in about the middle of May. Many people's upgrade date is June 1st, so that 14 days allows people who want to upgrade have the ability too pre-order. Now I hope that Sprint and HTC work together and make their flagship phone released on June 1st.

Honestly guys do you really think the Iphone is what pulls in the data? I'll give you an example. With my evo 3D, I pulled in over 9GB's last month on 3G and a little 4G(no torrenting) but both of my sisters own the iphone and they used 4 GB's together on our shared plan. One is somewhat tech-savvy but is on it constantly while the other uses it mainly for phone and pandora. Most iphone users don't know how to rape the unlimited data plans like I do. It's only going to be unlimited for so long so why not use it up. You want to complain you should complain to the average user on this site. We are the people using up the data not most of the iphone users.

I'd rather not look at it as a "use as much as I can while it's still free" situation. If I need to download something significant, I'll use my home computer on broadband. I rarely download new ROMs directly with my phone. I'd rather not contribute to Sprint even having to consider throttling by only downloading what I need to with my phone so I can use more when I really have to.

sprint shouldn't consider throttling because people are downloading things with their phone, thats the whole point of havnig an unlimited data plan, to not have to nit pick when and which files to download
it'd be different if i was downloading movies to my phone, to then transfer to my computer instead of just using my computers broadband, but why wouldn't a user with unlimited data download a file through the phone, when the file is for the phone?
lets all stop streaming music also, i mean we could download it with our computers, then transfer it to our phones, then make a playlist, that'd save sprint from having to throttle!

I'm trying to help my brother upgrade from a very old windows phone to a rezound and trying to get him to keep his unlimited data plan. Our parents live in an extremely rural area that doesnt have 4g. I saw posts in the past about people being able to keep their unlimited plans if they were in 3g areas.
Can anyone help or give advice as far doing an upgrade and keeping the older unlimited plan?
Much appreciated.
I don't know anything about getting it with 3G but I do know that if you get a home phone with Verizon they will let you have unlimited on your cell phone. It's $19/mo for nationwide calling. So if you have a home phone you can port that number over and it's no more expensive. If you don't have one and have to add it well, then it's going to cost that much more for unlimited.
You can't activate a 4G phone without a data plan and they are not allowing anyone to upgrade from 3G to 4G phones and keep their unlimited data. If there was a loop hole, I'm sure it would be posted online somewhere.
yeah, there's physically no way in our system to do it..maybe if you get like 5 levels up on customer service you could try though lol
ive always wondered this, hopefully someone can answer:
If I use someone else's upgrade on my line(on same account), will their plan change?

That's some bull that Verizon is pulling that crap. When I had my droid x my plan was also for 4g. You pay for the plan not the phone. I would sue them in small claims court for breach of contract.

If you are using an upgrade on your account you do not keep unlimited and it doesn't extend your contract. When you upgrade you also sign up for a new contract. You are misinformed.

You're talking semantics here and, seeing as how he manages a Verizon reseller, he probably knows what he is taking about.

It's not semantics, it's Verizon policy. If you have an upgrade on any line on your account and you use it, you are then signing a new two year contract. A new contract with no unlimited where you are forced into a share plan.
That isn't a guess or semantics. That's exactly how it is.
If it wasn't, then you'd never lose unlimited ever because you can just upgrade on other lines until the end of time. You do realize how stupid that sounds right?

You can do that, upgrade on a secondary line, transfer the phone to your line, new phone, unlimited data. You are not forced into a shared plan, you can choose an individual tiered plan. If you have another line already on tiered data or willing to give up unlimited and their upgrade, you can use it and keep your unlimited. Please stop being wrong.
Sometimes you have to be smarter than your smartphone.
Holy hell, NO YOU CAN'T. You cannot upgrade a secondary line and still maintain your current contract. If you add a line, it's a new two year agreement. When you upgrade a line with a subsidized price phone, it is a new two year agreement. THAT'S WHY THE PHONE IS SUBSIDIZED. That is how it works.
You really have no clue what you are saying. So stop.
Edit: Also, you can't be on individual tiered data when you have multiple lines anymore. You were able to add new lines at tiered data at one point but can't do that anymore. So any new line additions or upgrades force your entire family plan into a shared data plan. See how that works?
Again, stop speaking.
