Im pretty sure the kernel for the u20a is the same as the u20i, correct me if im wrong, but here is the default kernel ive got.
http://www.multiupload.com/UKWIV0GSTS
Just for my comprehension, as i am quite new to Android/Androiddevelopment: Is the stock kernel the one you have installed by default, when you buy a device? What's the benefits/what does one need a stock kernel? Is it because some roms state that an installation only works with the preinstalled kernel?
Thanks in advance,
aya.
Well I take it your already on a stock kernal, stock kernal is the one that came with your phone. What your reading is custom kernel, you need to unlock your bootloader first before you cam install a custom kernel. As your new to this I wouldn't use a custom kernel yet. Have you rooted your phone? Have installed any custom roms? You can still install a custom rom with a stock kernel, all the info is on the dev forum.

Ew. So this bootloader-thingy was the one where it's highly important to read and follow the instructions plus knowing what i'm doint for not bricking my device, right?
Yes, currently i'm on a MiniCM7 Pro V16. Currently i'm reading around, searching for the reason why i can't install a version 17-19, as it says "Can't open archive. Installation aborted (bad)", when i boot into recovery and try to install a .zip with version 17+.
Version 16 works fine. I also checked on my pc if the archive is maybe corrupt, but i can extract it without errors. Also redownloading didn't help.
Some guy wrote that this error can be because i still have a stock kernel. Another one wrote that it's probably because of the Clockwork Mod Recovery V3.x, as the higher MiniCM7 Pro versions require v4.x.
But the installation instruction says one should clear the caches and install the ROM to get the recovery 4.x installed. But i can't even start the installation, as it says "Installation aborted (bad)" when i try to run it.
So my guess was that this is maybe due to the fact that i'm still using a custom kernel, but i'm not sure. And i don't want to break my device
I guess you can try to install CMW recovery again since I've been always on stock kernel and updated every version of MiniCM7 easily, even the new versions with the new recovery. the roms don't necessarily need a custom kernel, there are versions for the stock one.
in the thread for MiniCM7 you find the instructions to upgrade the CMW, if you need, it's easy but read everything carefully.

Right so you have the basics of modding so may be its time to unlock your bootloader?
I've bricked my phone so many diffrent ways but I can always unbrick my phone through seus and pc companion.
Now I havnt tried installing v19 with out a custom kernel so not to sure if that's your problem but paul did say that it might be due to not using a custom kernel.

First, why do people keep posting questions to the dev section?!
Second, use flashtool to revert to stock firmware and start over.
First of all, wrong thread and second, wrong site. Ask in modaco site.
Rom is not using xrevovery03. And in kernel is xrecovery03.
Wondering if you are on baseband 71 and did you flash cm7 kernel by mistake.

Why modaco? The problem is not the ROM, as I'm currently using my phone to post this. The issue only came up after flashing the kernel.

Trips Roms are not compatible with custom kernels as he has stated before. you cant flash a custom kernel unless you have an unlocked bootloader (even then i'm not so sure). it stuffs the Recovery. Trips rom doesnt use Xrec 0.3. as a previous post stated you'll have to restore back to official 2.3.3 and re-root reinstall xrec and reinstall rom.

Hmm ok. So I need to flash the global generic 2.3.3 ftf and then do the downgrade / upgrade method? Then I can reinstall xrec and the rom?

Kernel will work. I tried an it worked. I do not what went wrong.
But use xrecovery03 before you flash kernel. Use flash tool GBready to get xrecovery03. You will reconize it by the logo of Z
woah! Don't start again with flashing 2.3 rom, it's unneccessary! you can manually copy/paste the needed files to the rom with a file manager and set the permissions right. But I would recommend you to unlock your bl, flash dooms stock 2.3.3 kernel for unlocked bl's and then the v04b kernel for locked bl's with recovery.
Why? Simple: using dooms stock 2.3.3 kernel means you can't loose xrecovery again, even if you format system partition and reboot you can enter xercoery again, cause it's included in the kernel. Also you can remove then the xrecovery.tar from your system partition cause it's not needed anymore.

Hi, just found an 8X and thought of stylin' it a litte.. So i visited this site, and found lots of guides on how to install a custom fimrware.
My device is like this:
Xperia x8
Model: E15i
Current firmware version: 2.1-update1
baseband: M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53494915
core: 2.6.29 [email protected] #1
Version number: 2.1.1.A.0.6
Rooted with superOneClick
xRecovery Installed
I've tried to install serveral ROMs using xRecovery og CWM, and the only one i have had working was GingerCruzt rev 7, (since install instructions tells me install update with xrecovery) i did and i worked.. this rom just doesnt allow me to use wifi... so i wanted to upgrade.
but the guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101691
says nothing about how to installer the later versions??? or is it just me?
How to install: only for rev 6 and 7
* Download ROM, install with xRecovery
Click to collapse
i then tried to install it (rev 7.4) as i did it with rev 7, just using xRecovery, but bootscreen just loops? anyone know what im doing wrong?
..
also, i tried to install Gingerdx, i did everything exactly as the guide said, but ended up with same problem looping bootscreen.
The only thing i hosnestly cant figure out is that the guide requirements says:
the guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1188486
Requirements
- Rooted
- ClockworkMod Recovery (v014+)
- Latest kernel and latest baseband xxx015
- Desire to delete Stock SE's Eclair
Click to collapse
Rooted - guess my phone is rooted good enough?? SuperOneClick should work for theis??
CWM - Yup i had CWM installing the update
Lates kerlen and lates baseband xxx015 - Well!? wtf is lates kernel and how do i get it? and so, "latest" aint that a changing factor? when guide was written the lates "thingy" could be something else than it is by now? help explain please
Desire to delete Stock SE's Eclair - fine with me?
i really hope to get some answers, Thank you!
Did you try fullwipe?

In which order do i have to do the fullwipe? and what difference does it make? I'm still a little confused
Do full wipe just after you install new rom.
But you automagicly lose all your user data, so make backup b4 you do so
Just use xRecovery backup option. If something go wrong you can always restore.
Correct. You can us titanium backup also...

Hello all. I decided to install Hybrom on my Xperia mini pro (sk17i) but i'm little confused at the moment and don't know what to do. I have installed CM 7.2.0 rom with FreeXperia kernel. If i want to install the Hybrom, i just need to flash stock firmware via flashtool, install Clockwork once again, then install some custom kernel like Rage and then install the rom? Or do something else? And do i need to relock the bootloader to flash stock firmware?
Install stock firmware, install kernel, install ROM. That's all. No relock needed. Custom kernel already includes Recovery so it is not needed.

And when i flash firmware, wipe is automatically done so i don't need to do it manually?

Flashing stock firmware - if you choose it in Flashtool, then yes.
Custom - no, you have to do it yourself before installing the ROM.

Thank you, I really appreciate your answer, but I have one last question. Does the firmware already include rom and kernel, or rom only? And do I have to install newer baseband to it to make the custom rom work?

Stock firmwares in .ftf file already include ROM and kernel both.
Most custom ROMs have their own custom kernel that you need to install yourself. Sometimes it is written in the topic as separate download link, sometimes it is included inside the .zip file, then you need to extract it and flash via fastboot. Check my tutorial, if you need help with it.
Baseband will depend on the custom ROM.
I have SE stock rom 2.1 update 1 with stock kernel on my x10i mini. I have rooted my device and I want to know if I can enable multitouch on my phone. Please someone help me .
Thanks in advance...
I didnt try only kernel, but I try custom MINICM7-2.2.0 based on GB 2.3.7 and it is like new phone reBORN, fast&stable.

In that case, there are a few froyo-based roms (srom-froyo, froyobread) that include this particular module, don't know if those links are still working, try to search the x10mini development forum to find them

Do they require unlocking of bootloader .Actually I am afraid of this purpose. Is there any GB rom that can be flashed without unlocking bootloader on stock kernel 2.6.29 Thanks for Help.
You only need to unlock your bootloader if you need a custom kernel.
All the froyo roms run on the stock kernel, so they can be installed without unlocking the bootloader.
GB roms all run on a custom kernel (on the x10Mini), so you need to unlock the bootloader for that.
If you get S1Tool and post the output, i could probably provide you with some guidance on the safety of unlocking

Yeah !! in the output It shows SEMC something with capital R . Actually date is 10w29. Flashtool is big file and I have a slow connection... Smthng else for unlocking bootloader
it should say semc-simlock certificate, and 10w29 is ok too. you can get the manual scripts for unlocking the bootloader in a slightly smaller package, but the point about unlocking the bootloader is to install a custom kernel... you will need flashtool for that... lol.
I would say, try one of the froyo roms if they're still available, i'm pretty sure froyobread with the hotfix can be downloaded and they can be installed on the stock kernel. but then, those are big downloads too on a slow connection

once again its ur turn to sort me out of this problem...

Then flash the rom through cwm

Go into CWM and install MiniCM, stock will not boot on the nAa kernel.

Hey guys,I own optimus one and I m used to rooting and stuff but my brother owns xperia mini pro so I need to install cyanogenmod (9 or10) whichever is stable.I had gone through various guides and stickies yet I want to be dead sure that I don't mess up my brothers handset. Its kinda new coz bootloader needs to be unlocked and also kernel image needed to be flashed separately unlike in optimus one.
Now I want help of you guys in the following manner like:-
1. My brothers mini pro is on ICS 4.1.B.0.587 and the rooting tutorial provided here for the said firmware
http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119?start=0&tstart=0 is not clear to me coz it says that first I need to install some kernel [only mini mentioned here] then next I need to flash another kernel according to firmware. Can someone explain what is being done in this and why rooting is so complicated in this.
2. Certain ROM's say that you need to flash kernel first using flashtool
My query is that all ROM's that I flashed till now on optimus one included kernel and I only needed to flash ROM zip through cwm.. So do I need to flash kernel everytime I flash ROM!! and isn't there flashable zip for kernel too!!
3. FXP ROM's do not contain things like what's working and what's not, it only has issue tracker so it become difficult for new comer to know the bugs in ROM. Can anyone tell me the least bugs cm9 & cm10 ROM and what are the bugs present.
4. Lastly, should I proceed like this!!
i. Root device (though method isn't clear to me)
ii. unlock bootloader
iii. install cwm (I guess I can do this using flashtool)
iv. backup current ROM along with kernel (for future use,I know its optional)
v. flash kernel using flashtool
vi. flash ROM through cwm.
I m a quick learner and I just need some guidance on this new device (double checking coz its my bro's device) . Looking forward for support. Thanks

You needn't root first if you want to unlock bl, just unlock bl and flash a custom kernel (in most custom kernels cwm is included).
Backup your rom and install the rom...
hmmm....
1. Unlock Bootloader........
2. Flash Custom Kernel (all custom kernel is per-rooted and have CWM).......
3. Boot into CWM and Flash CM9 or CM10 (factory format/wipe dalvik/cache).....
4. Boot into Fastboot And Flash FXP kernel for CM9 or CM10.....
xperia phones aren't like sammy, lg or htc where recovery is a separate partition from kernel. in fact, by default xperia phones doesn't even have "stock recovery" like on other phone. by that we integrate cwm in kernel ramdisk.
and to answer the question:
1- flash custom kernel mean't for your phone only, never ever flash kernel intended for other phone. and its done via fastboot and should be flashed before flashing rom.
2- like i said u can't compare xperia phone with other phone like sammy etc, its different. kernel must be flash via fastboot.
3- for cm10, bugs that i notice is slow accelerator, but fixable with some text editing, and non working front camera for lww and minipro.
4- should be like this, according to order:
- unlock bootloader.
- flash kernel via fastboot.
- boot into cwm.
- backup rom if u want.
- wipe data, cache and dalvik cache. don't wipe system partition or u will get error when flashing rom later.
- flash rom, and gapps if its cm/aokp/pa rom.
- profit :good:
thank you guys.... this made me clear...
one last thing :- which kernel should I flash on stock 4.1.B.0.587 which is pre rooted and have cwm after unlocking bootloader.I mean the one compatible with above firmware and also do I need to do anything with baseband or will it be compatible. After this m ready to enter the custom xperia world
