The Galaxy S 2 is a Media Playback Beast - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

So I finally got ext2 SD Micro cards working thanks to this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184767
This allowed me to test playback with my largest mkvs. What I found shocked me.
My largest 1080p mkvs play back perfectly on our phone. Smooth as silk.
The only issue is that tracks with DTS give no sound in the default player, so I invested in Dice Player that completely fixed this issue. Dice Player works well with the MHL cable so I am able to play the 1080p mkvs on my TV at 1080p.
This phone really is a dream!

I use my xbmc server to stream 720p mkv's with no problem here. Love it!

How are you doing this? I have xbmc all over my house and would love to stream to my phone.

+2 for Dice Player. Ever other paid player should go out of business or add HW support. FFmpeg software decoding is getting OLD

[Q] why is diceplayer the only one?

As the topic suggests. Why is dice player the only player we can use on the tab to watch mkv files natively straight from download?
Have they just got access to a certain code within Android that the people of moboplayer or the many others don't know about?
Just trying to understand why dice player is the only one on what I thought was a open source system.
Many thanks
Dan
I bit the bullet and bought it. Crashes a few times but just assume it's due to a bad mkv file. Still don't get why diceplayer is the only one who play stock mkv files from download.
I'm a developer of diceplayer.
We have very good relation with many vendors and carriers.
we can access to some devices before their release and get some help from vendors.
but I can not say anymore, because we have a lot of NDAs..
I've bought Dice player, but have just learned that BSPlayer lite (free) has now also HW acceleration. I've tried it and see no differences to Dice player. Made a quick test with 4 MKV files, a southpark and a simpsons episode (played fine on both) and the Another Earth movie and a Harry Potter trailer (about 3-5 second out of sync on both Dice and BS, plays fine with any Windows player).
Although I love Dice Player and it plays all my HD files, I couldn't watch my films when I was recently in a spot with no internet connection - because it needs to go online to verify the license
I also noticed that it failed to work if I didn't have my phone tethered. Seriously tho can I not use the program if I don't let my tablet go online?
Because thats outrageous seen as tho I've paid for it!

Sorry for inconvenience.
That problems comes from google license server.
we'll improve license check method.

It works without internet connection, just long timeout during attempt to check license or something...
I'm not sure if something else has changed in my setup, but the last release doesn't seem to be working as smoothly as before with the combination of Twonky Media Server, and Bubble UPnP. Xvid files often stutter and break up, and as far as I can determine nothing has changed in the other components - only an update to Dice.
Has anything changed in the latest release that might potentially cause this behaviour?

That depends on the movie. I've tried also BSplayer and Diceplayer and there is no doubt that Diceplayer's performance is way ahead on several files.
It is almost as good as the original video player from the non-touchwiz firmware
Sometimes I'm thinking that a Samsung developer was hired by Inisoft and he intentionaly ommited HW acceleration for 720p from the included video player of Touchwiz firmware in order to boost sales of Diceplayer...

Mobo can't use HW video decoder & renderer.
SW decoder drains your battery too quickly.

What problems did you fix? The latest version is 1.7.2 and still the channels are not correctly downmixed.
Usually the 6 channels are combined in the file like this (channel positions): Front = L C R, Side = SL SR LFE.
What Diceplayer is doing is sending the L + C + R channels on the right speaker and SL + SR + LFE on the left speaker. Which is completely wrong, all the main sound of the movie is heard from the right speaker and very often the sound is distorted.
A correct downmixing is (see http://www.ac3filter.net/wiki/AC3Filter:Mixer_page):
L’ = 1 * L + 0.7071 * C + 1 * SL + 1 * LFE
R’ = 1 * R + 0.7071 * C + 1 * SR + 1 * LFE
Or there are other options like Dolby Pro Logic:
Lt = L + -3dB*C + -3dB*(-Ls -Rs)
Rt = R + -3dB*C + -3dB*(Ls + Rs)
But I think you know about it, because 6 channel AC3 is correctly downmixed.
Also, a good option whould be to have a "swap L/R speakers" command in the menu. It is useful when watching movies with the tablet upside-down.
Thanks!
So the diceplayer can play MKV, XVID AVI etc much better faster than the Mobo? Or does it play it the same, but just use less battery?
I downloaded the trial version. I Also tried to play a MKV file for NBC's show Grimm. It was very choppy. Am I missing something here? Is their a setting I need to change on the Tab?
i cant install
i cant install the latest update for my galaxy tab.. sorry.. im kind of a noob... hehe
Oh, no! The latest update UEKMM for the US tablet, with Honeycomb 3.2, broke the fluidity of Diceplayer with some 720p movies. I hope the developers will fix that soon!

Best Video Player for Samsung G3...Need Ur Comments...

hi all..,
i want a video player which plays all format including mkv,flv...
i tried several...but found one ... QQPlayer...
the problem is......even though i had hybrid data2sd enabled..it installed in internal memory and took 5-6 MB
any other video player...which play all formats for G3...without lag..??
need ur comments....
pls...if possible...anybody could upload or PM me...apk of best video player for G3...
Frankly speaking i dont use this phone for watching videos. If i have to; i use the stock one. I have heard is Double Twist player is good. It has both music and video support. I have also heard that Mobo Player is good. Try these both and see which suits you.
BTW It really doesnt make a difference for which player you use. All are mostly the same but have different UIs
use rockplayer.its the best.plays everything, even streaming from some sites like iphoneanime.net
Yup, All players I have tried play other formats (flv, mkv) with lags and unsync sound using software decoding. It will be useful if anyone gave good video player.
I use MXplayer since it has a option of fast SW decoding mode. Just don't like it's UI for video list.
MXvideoplayer - didn't see any flow in it, everything is as to my wishes.

guys..mx video player sucks...very badly...don't use...
qq player is the best...
try a movie at 30fps...qqplayer plays very well...while mx player lags...
One more problem with MX is when using Soft decoding, it disables sound after some seconds. Moboplayer plays well but lags when showing playing interface. I use QQPlayer as alternative, It plays soft decoding Videos nicely while keeping as much sync with music as it can, so far so good!
MX is good if want to work with different options like zoom, color etc. Smooth while playing. Though need to fix lot of issues.
Moboplayer for User interference but lags. Lags while playing in Stretched Full Screen mode too.
Rockplayer, never tried.. slow for me so wouldn't recommend.
Overall- QQPlayer looks best one so far.

I have a problem with the image and tone, is there a player that can smooth it runs all formats? Thank you

Video Rendering Lag

Hello, I have recently encountered issues with regards to 1080p video playback.
Being aware that the TF201 has 4 cores, I had expected smooth playback with no lag.
When playing media files from my Plex media server, the 1080p video files play flawlessly. Though when playing the exact same files locally from the Transformer's directory, the video plays with extreme lag and jittery.
Video Players Tested with (Results in Lag) : MX Video Player, MoboPlayer
Anyone know a possible solution?
Thanks In Advance.

It shouldn't. Usually internal flash storage is a lot faster than removable flash storage. I doubt ASUS would go cheap and use cheap flash storage on their device.
Do you know what type of video format you are playing? mkv is a video container, which usually hold h.264 video files and 5.1 digital sound format, but can be different.
Ask Andyx over in his thread, "what would you like to know about the prime" . He might can help you. It should be able to play 1080p files flawlessly as it's been tested as so by a few members here that have it and major reviewers. It might be your encoding. It should play with no lag or issues from internal storage or SD card. Actually been tested by major reviewer, I think Anadtech or technobuffalo, to play just as flawlessly from SD card than from internal storage.

The file AndyX played on his YouTube vid was 1080P MKV file also. Which played with no issues. I'd say run these same stats by him to compare to what he ran in his video. There's another guy here to that ran a high quality video test. His thread is called something like you got questions, I got questions. Those 2 and candy are the only ones it's seems that have a prime also already that might can help.
The only thing I can think is that the file is encoded using some odd parameters that do not jive with the Prime and the reason it works with Plex is because it's doing some kind of decoding, even if on a lower level.

I'd go with that. I've seen some nutty as a fruit cake parameters on mkv's I've shared from friends. one of them just will not convert in handbrake, it looks like crap and yet played natively as an mkv file it looks fine. when I delved into the frame encoding etc it was bizarre.
I'd go with a grotty mkv file over the prime having an issue here.

Dice Player on the Market should do the trick. Works really well and plays everything I throw at it, but the "Paid" version seems to be missing from the Market at the moment due to Google Checkout issues with the developer.
Anand did a really good review testing all kinds of video codecs. He was able to play 1080p H.264 high profile streams at up to 40Mbps just fine using DicePlayer.

Technically speaking, it can, the only reason why I am currently unable to do so is perhaps due to software issues. Playback is perfectly fine via media servers, but I encounter issues when playing back the same videos in local storage.

played 11gig movie from mxplayer over DLNA still smooth
I was trying to play some 1080p stuff on my prime and it was lagging and eventually just quit. It was a x264 mkv file with ac3 codex for sound). When I try to play it in mx player, so it's smooth with h/with acceleration but has no sound. The I tried running it on my pc and it worked fine.

There, both Dice and MX has an advantage that they have multiple settings for the subtitle.

ICS MKV Support

I thought ICS was suppose to support MKV by default. I am able to play video but get no sound.

Can anyone confirm?

I think it is a software issue.

You can use MX video player and chose an alternate music stream and that plays the sound. You can choose the alternate stream from the music icon at the top when you are playing the Video file.
Hope that helps.
Give QQplayer from the market a try.

Try BSPlayer Lite from the market for your mkv files. It's free and seems to work well.
I also got no sound from my TFP with ICS with other players.
You don't get sound because the Prime doesn't support the audio codec of whatever video you are trying to play.
i use v player. Always works smoothly with mkv. And if its one of those movies that doesn't like to play right, it will work on mobo player. Mobo player is choppy on mkv for me so I use it as back up

It can support native MKV decoding but you need to take a look at the audio codec as the stock player probably does not support it.
Why would you want to use it anyways? Dice is amazing

This is so frustrating. I installed every player imaginable and the only one that plays the mkv perfectly is Dice. The sound with the Dice Player is horrible and unlistenable though. All the other players play the sound perfectly, but the video is choppy on all of them. The mkv is a 1080p if that matters. I'm ready to blow a gasket over here !
