Hello, I have recently encountered issues with regards to 1080p video playback.
Being aware that the TF201 has 4 cores, I had expected smooth playback with no lag.
When playing media files from my Plex media server, the 1080p video files play flawlessly. Though when playing the exact same files locally from the Transformer's directory, the video plays with extreme lag and jittery.
Video Players Tested with (Results in Lag) : MX Video Player, MoboPlayer
Anyone know a possible solution?

I'd use bsplayer. I found it better handling large files, particularly mkv files or hi res video.

Are you using an SD card to play your video files? using a class 6 or lower card may cause studdering in HD video files. You'll want a class 10 card.

My Class 10 microSD still needs a week to come in. @[email protected]
Would playing from the internal storage result in playback lag?

Is Plex transcoding for you? Perhaps check the settings there and try to match for local playback.

The playback is much more smooth, but the video and audio always end up out of sync

It shouldn't. Usually internal flash storage is a lot faster than removable flash storage. I doubt ASUS would go cheap and use cheap flash storage on their device.
Do you know what type of video format you are playing? mkv is a video container, which usually hold h.264 video files and 5.1 digital sound format, but can be different.
Ask Andyx over in his thread, "what would you like to know about the prime" . He might can help you. It should be able to play 1080p files flawlessly as it's been tested as so by a few members here that have it and major reviewers. It might be your encoding. It should play with no lag or issues from internal storage or SD card. Actually been tested by major reviewer, I think Anadtech or technobuffalo, to play just as flawlessly from SD card than from internal storage.

The file AndyX played on his YouTube vid was 1080P MKV file also. Which played with no issues. I'd say run these same stats by him to compare to what he ran in his video. There's another guy here to that ran a high quality video test. His thread is called something like you got questions, I got questions. Those 2 and candy are the only ones it's seems that have a prime also already that might can help.
The only thing I can think is that the file is encoded using some odd parameters that do not jive with the Prime and the reason it works with Plex is because it's doing some kind of decoding, even if on a lower level.

I'd go with that. I've seen some nutty as a fruit cake parameters on mkv's I've shared from friends. one of them just will not convert in handbrake, it looks like crap and yet played natively as an mkv file it looks fine. when I delved into the frame encoding etc it was bizarre.
I'd go with a grotty mkv file over the prime having an issue here.

On MX player, did you try all 3 coding options ( HW, SW, SW fast)? If so, try dice player trial. Almost like mx, but they have their own codecs to download.

Dice Player on the Market should do the trick. Works really well and plays everything I throw at it, but the "Paid" version seems to be missing from the Market at the moment due to Google Checkout issues with the developer.
Anand did a really good review testing all kinds of video codecs. He was able to play 1080p H.264 high profile streams at up to 40Mbps just fine using DicePlayer.

Technically speaking, it can, the only reason why I am currently unable to do so is perhaps due to software issues. Playback is perfectly fine via media servers, but I encounter issues when playing back the same videos in local storage.

I've been using an iPhone for god knows how long just becuase of Air Video - there are no alternatives for Android. The Galaxy S II is looking absolutely perfect, but there's just one more thing I absolutely must confirm before I make the purchase.
I'm a huge anime watcher. I watch anime on the go all the time. The iPhone 4 uses Air Video and does that perfectly. Since there's no alternative for Android the Galaxy S II must be able to watch it without conversion for me to replace my iPhone with it.
My anime are almost always 720p, MKV encoded with h.264, softsubs. That's generally the industry standard for anime distribution. Will the Galaxy S II play these files without conversion. If it's a yes, then I'm ordering right now.
If someone here actually has one and watches anime, it would be much appreciated if you can download an episode and try it out on your device. Telling me your results would be much appreciated!
The most important thing is framerate, audio and subtitle rendering.
Havent watched anime specifically but tested a x264 encoded blu ray 1080p and that worked fine.

I can confirm 720p (and 1080p as well most likely) MKV files (yes, anime. Tried it with released from gg, commie, UTW) with .ass/.srt softsubs play perfectly. The more advanced aspects of .ass subs don't work but it's no big deal - Styling, transition effects, etc.
I'm using mVideoPlayer instead of the stock one as the stock can't read .ass softsubs.
If I had this two years ago when i used to go on anime binges it would've been perfect. Didn't like waiting 30 mins for each ep to convert to 480x272 mp4s.
Should play them, make sure the subs file name is the same as the video (up to the file extension obviously). If the subs don't play try converting them to .srt subs and try again!
1920x1080 mkv's play fine, full speed. This is the only phone that's been able to play my 'Bad Apple PV' test mkv at full speed without the video/sound getting out of sync after 20 seconds.
However subtitles did not work in any of the players I tried (default, mobo & rock). Will look for another player later.

These MKV's don't have a separate subs file. They're built into the mkv as a separate data stream.
For those looking for an alternative to Air Video, I've been using Plex. It has a companion program that runs on your comp (just like air video) that converts pretty much any video format to stream to your android device. Only problem is that it's not quite as easy to set up to stream over 3g/4g as air video is. But if you know how to port-forward your router, it's pretty easy from there. Hope this helps some ppl!

Why are you not watching anime anymore? There are so many good things this season.
The S2 can play HD content no problem, it's the media player you should be looking at. If one doesn't read subs in MKV containers then just move on to the next media player and check. Yeah anyway, no problems.
As for why i'm not watching any, i'm too busy. I work/study 50+ hours a week now, I try to squeeze something in during the commutes though.

Yeah, not sure why I was thinking of external subs. I have some 720p MKVs and their subs, of the kind you mention, do play in the default player for me...
...and to answer a question above: Yes! Seeking within 1080p content works just fine.

I have the default player, moboplayer, mvideoplayer, and Rockplayer installed, each will do a little something the others won't. Interesting there is now enough CPU and RAM grunt for software decoding to manage things that were like slideshows on other phones.
whats the largest size file you can put onto the gs2?
tried to copy a 4.4 gb mkv to the phone and says its to large of a file,
do i have to create a partition in a different format?

On the subject of video, has anyone use DLNA to connect to a Twonky server? My G2X would connect but not play video. I'm hoping it's because the G2X couldn't support MKV which is what all me stuff's encoded in. Thx.
I have a 3gb 1080p anime movie I use for testing. Lots of things happening on screen. I dont watch anime at all, but subtitles was included in the movie and displayed fine.
1 was a subtitled Dragon ball z/gt(dont know really) but played fine with subtitles. the other was a soul blade(i think) that played smoothly also.

The Tegra 2 seems to have crappy video/audio codec support. The samsung processor in the captivate I had previously played everything I could throw at it.
Thankfully, the T2 is powerful enough to do some software decoding. Try using various video players. I find that MoboPlayer can run all my HD videos so far.
Also, just because a file is .Divx, .AVI, .mkv.... doesn't mean that it will play. As far as I know, there are different encoding formats and levels for each codec. The T2 seems to be okay with any basic file, but none of the highly processed files such as movie mkv's.

But we can't do the dane for media center....so the better you can do for now is convert your vídeo tio an old codec

I've been using Handbrake and the settings from here:

The only difference is that I like to click the "keep aspect ratio" button in handbrake for the resolution. Tweak as you like, but I've found that if you use the constant quality setting, A/V gets out of sync. Biggest bummer is that I have to encode specifically for the Atrix...can't seem to use my "advanced encoded" videos from my media server. I have taken previously encoded 1080p HD movies back though handbrake with the referenced settings to the Atrix and they play beautifully both in MoboPlayer and the Entertainment Center.
Anyone has try using flyer to play a 720p video? Does it lag or having some delay on frame?

Depends on where the source of the file is. 1080 chokes, 720 is fine.
If on the device (internal or external sd cad), it works fine... You will have to downmix the audio to stereo before transferring as the built in player doesn't do it for you, 5.1 AAC and 5.1 AC3 don't work... No sound. ..or use a third party application. The only one I have been able to find that can handle 5.1 is Dice Player. It software decodes at a cost of some video quality. No dropped frames, but artifacts galore. Moboplayer and the built in player don't artifact the video but the sound problem.... Also Dice is a pay app and I don't use my Flyer for video much anyway (have a HTPC for that).
If streaming over wifi on your home network, same prerequisite for the downmix applies. Also, I would recommend an 802.11n router. 802.11g tends to lag out on the larger files (>4gb)
If streaming over the Internet, the lag will depend on the internet connection itself.
Probably a bit longer of an answer than you were intending, but hope this helps.

The short answer is that yes the Flyer can handle 720p playback and just like any other tablet as long as the format matches the accelerated HW CODECs, it works fine. Like any other tablet, feed it something strange and it won't playback smoothly.

So, the Flyer does not natively support RMVB video. If you are not getting good playback I would convert to one of the native formats. if you can.
.3gp, .3g2, .mp4,
.wmv (Windows Media Video 9)
.avi (MP4 ASP and MP3)
.xvid (MP4 ASP and MP3)

The BS Player does a good job for me. No lag issues thus far with using 720 files that I have viewed.

I have several Bluray rips (of discs I own) on a NAS, LAN is gigabit ethernet and wifi is 802.11n. Each rip weighs in between 9-10gb after a mild compression from 1080p to 720p (1080p + nvidia ion2 + linux + xbmc = fail). The rips are MP4 with AAC audio.
The nas is set up to serve the files over upnp and/or samba. So, I used upnplay (https://market.android.com/details?id=cx.hoohol.silanoid&hl=en) to locate the file and it asks to open with a video player.
No errors given as it is streaming over the LAN instead of playing off the device.
However, if you are planning on playing the files straight off the Flyer, handbrake can reduce it further to a 2gb file with 2.0 audio, no discernable video loss on the 7" screen.

On edit: was browsing around and found a reference for Skifta (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.skifta.android.app) as a upnp client. Using it instead of upnplay somehow downmixes 5.1 to 2.0 on Moboplayer (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.clov4r.android.nil). One issue is that Skifta doesn't support landscape, but it's only a minor annoyance.

yea, actually I don't need the 720p, just the video original is that size. I watch it by Flyer because I can watch it while travelling. Am too lazy to convert.. haha.. So I would need to find a video converter =) anyway thank..

I'm not sure about this. My video is about 500-750MB, it might be compress by rmvb format. And Flyer has a hard time to play it.
Well problem is, for some formats the player has to do conversion on the fly and that degrades performance. That's why you may need to covert first. Yes its no fun and it takes time, but you can then guarantee lag free playback

It will take me a few hours to test while a raw Bluray rip reencodes, but I think I have a Handbrake profile to convert the video to a format that is both small in file size and playable on the Flyer with no lag and little visual degradation (using the built in player)...

do you guys think the prime will bw able t play such MKVs with no issue? im talking about normal 72ßp/108ßp mkvs which you can dl all ovwer the net, not specially encoded ones.

Anandtech says it's amazing at playing high quality video. this was an issue for me.

Plus in the what would you like to know about the prime thread a member already tested this as he has a prime already. It was mkv and 1080p. Played flawlessly. He made a video on it. He has at least 3 you tube vids reviewing the prime hands on.

Tegra 3 may support 1080p and all, but question is, if default video player, that uses HW decoding, supports MKV format. My iPad 2 supports all kinds of HD, as long as it's in proper format. MKVs play very choppy if I use a player for any format other than iPad supported.

Default player doesn't even matter. Even if a format not supported, there are always 3rd party players which will. The member here that has a prime used a 3rd. Party player to play that 1080P MKV file. Which it played perfectly. No default player in any tablet plays all formats. That's the great thing about getting a good 3rd. Prty player that will.

default player plays the video fine, but for some reason theres no sound.
bsplay, mxplayer and rock player are all HD accelerated players.
When someone goes to play with a demo at gamestop, they should take with them a micro sd that has a high profile 1080p mkv and see how that plays on the prime. They should add other video players on the card and install them and see which one plays better with the high profile mkv. Yes I know that reviews have said this or that, but having someone that is not part of any review circle would be grateful to many.
I would do this but I'm not popping my head in that gamestop store after getting that dump.

I wonder how Prime will play avi files. I find that playing avi on TF101 is fine but the quality is very bad - I get a lot of artifacts - like it had a grid of dots over it. Probably because players use simplified decoding algoritms? Or maybe it's because Tegra2 lacks NEON? I also think it should be able to send 1080p signal to the screen even if the video is below 1080p (and different than 720p) - otherwise it will be scaled twice - once to 720p by the Prime and second time by the monitor itself - it will probably degrade quality. (well, but on the other hand I can just stick to 720p and 1080p videos which should be great)
Tegra3 does have NEON so no worries.

I had this same problem with a 1080p .MOV file off of my DSLR as well as a MKV file. I haven't tried mxplayer, but I will when I get home. I've been looking forward to being able to play MKV files without having to convert or manage with iTunes. Like Sinatra sang, "I'll do it my way!"
somehow I can't copy mkv to my asus prime... it keeps saying explorer error and it restarts the explorer
I have been playing around with my Prime for the last 5 days, especially in regards with video. Here are my findings:
- Not all files can be played back with HW decoding.
- mkv containers does not seem to be playable in the default player, only 3rd part, like mx video player.
- 720p mkv plays back almost flawlessly with some initial stutter in SW, 1080p does not.
- mp4 and avi seem to be HW accelerated by mx video player.
I am not entirely sure on what seem to be the problem. My initial reaction is that it is a problem with the container formats. However, I have not checked whether the videos, that I have tried to play, have some exotic encoding settings, which the software controling the HW decoder, does not recognize.
Perhaps mkw HW acceleration support broke in one of the updates I received, when I booted my prime for first time monday.
What are your experiences, especially with 1080p?

The first three high profile 720p MKV files I tried with BSPlayer worked flawlessly. Same videos will not play at all on my Xoom.

Will do when I get home. I will also try the same videos on my SGSII for comparison.
My hunch is that the hw decoder refuses to decode the video stream. Perhaps this is controlled entirely by the android system and not the video player app.
I'm trying to watch an SD version of BSG Season 2.. Plays fine on my iPad 2, and on my computer, so I know the audio is in sync in the file.
I originally had the files on my class 4 micro sd card, so I moved them over to internal memory thinking the card was too slow.. I'm still having this issue.
I've tried, a few players.. MX Video, Dice w/ tegra 2 plugin, and VPlayer..
Any suggestions on how to improve playback and audio sync? This is killing me man.. Cylons are all over the place I gotta know what's gonna happen!!!
I tried 'Force GPU Rendering' or whatever the option was in Developer Options, and that improved things a bit, but it's still off.. Is it just the mp4 format maybe? I can't imagine this thing can play HD if it's choking like this on an SD mp4 video file..
n/m, BS Player seems to have resolved the issue, even if I uncheck 'Force GPU rendering'.

Must be something odd with the encoding. I know you got it to work in bs player but should have worked in all. And I can assure you it plays hd just fine. I have a 1080p mkv of a 2 hour movie that is 11gb and it play flawlessly.

Thanks for the feedback.. I converted it to mp4 from.. I forget what the source was, but I used handbreak, and the iPad setting (converted it before I bought the prime).. is DVDCatalyst the encoder of choice for the prime?

Can't really answer that question as I haven't done much encoding for the prime or in general in a long time. I just throw on the file as it comes. I may start doing so to get them smaller when I strart filling up my space.
