You know that our (SGSII) screen resolution is 800x480 which gives us 15:9 aspect ratio. New Galaxy Nexus has 1280x720 which has a more movie friendly aspect ratio of 16:9. In ICS' screen it seems that the last 80 (not sure) pixels of the screen (portrait) are used for the menu keys or soft keys (you name it) as our hard/touch keys. I mentioned in the short videos of the new nexus that when in landscape mode, the screen keys follow the bottom of the screen and just rotate their icons. This leaves it with 1200x720 screen res for Android (no matter orientation) which has an aspect ratio of 15:9. This is what we have now! My opinion is that galaxy nexus shows that if manufacturers want no hard keys for ICS devices (mainly smartphones) they should be making 16:9 screens. On smartphones with low res screens, or older devices with harware keys, 15:9 is just fine. It gives the same look and feel and needs no modification. And this is what we are going to get!
On the other hand, tablets like SGT 10.1 with 1280x800 (16:10) or old SGT with 1024x600, do not match with this pattern and need different approach.
What do you think?
I believe that they said that the touch buttons disappear when playing a game or video.

Good point! Also I would think that the default DPI will be changed to 220 or maybe even 200 once ICS hits phones with 800X480 resolution!
Hopefully this means that the Android Market would now work at all densities

Exactly. This is why the new 16:9 screens are more movie(-game) friendly.

So they will always be there if you play a game? And BTW I think ICS will only be Movie friendly! Not Game! I mean that the soft keys will be visible during Games.

So the Galaxy Nexus have touch sensitive bezel?
In this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTp363GACjs&feature=youtube_gdata_player
We can see that in the camera app, softkey are not displayed BUT the place where softkey take place normaly is just black and we need to touch this black space to display softkey.
So i'm really not sure that there is fullscreen mode in ICS except for Lockscreen.
seriously people get real please.
ICS is not one device os (like other ishits) this os is made to unify the android experience among mobile tablet devices of different spectrum.

Most people on this forum will root their phone, and the developers will find a way to hide the software keys as they have on my tab 10.1.
That meens you will be able to hide the software keys with just longpressing the powerbutton and show/hide keys as I can now do on my tablet. Then you can watch a movie or play games without having to think about it, and when you need the buttons, you just show them again. Very simple solution
Umm.. Just because it has 720p, doesn't mean it has a 16:9 display

I was thinking with ICS, how will we use our phones one handed? I mean, I tried using honey comb on a tablet and the "options" key was on the top right corner, and it seems like its the same for ICS. And I don't see the option button in the row of softkeys.
In other words to access the option menu, you need to reach all the way up to the top of the screen. Not user friendly or ergonomic if you ask me.

I was hoping a developer would make it like a tab, and swype the keys off the screen and then pull the keys back out.

Phones with Hardware keys will NOT have the Software buttons. That much is confirmed.
With I HYPOTHESIZE is that since most applications will be updated to include an action/menu bar inside the app like the next Google Maps, the "Menu" key in most phones will be the task/windows switcher key

Heya just wanted to ask around of which is your favorite galaxy s2 function?
The .. Touch screen?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
You can't really have a favorite function since it has the same functions as any comparable android phone. It has the motion feature which is pretty meh but I got like kies air and makes data transfer easy when you don't have the cable.
Screenshot function...
for those who don't know: hit the home button and then power button right after to take a screenshot...
Yeah but apart from Kies Air there has to be something else that sets it apart from HTC and LG
Cant go wrong with the accelerated browser; first android phone I've had with zero browsing lag even with flash displayed; other than that i really enjoy the 1gb of ram. Keep running apps and throw whatever at it and the phone still demolishes through it all.
The yellowish left side definitely!
Other than that, the first zero lag android phone I have ever seen . I hope that HTC will do the same with the future phones (not the case with Sensation)
Not so much a function, but my faveourite part is the screen.
When looked at straight on it's great.
Not so much when tilting though and the blue tint shows....
The off button its a tool not a must have on all the time and i have no life if i dont have a smartphone text mms twitter etc .

Well i love it in terms of spec. Would love to have this phone built by htc in terms of shape. Its quite ugly but powerfull

Hi,
I'm curious to understand from those playing with the Honeycomb ROM, what improvements does it bring the Flyer, especially from the HTC side please?
Additionally, is there any 'improvements' regarding the 'physical' buttons and their locations depending on the screen layout (landscape / portrait). I mean there are times when in landscape that I'd prefer the buttons to have remained on the side, rather than have followed to the bottom of the screen. Just wondering if HTC had listened and provided this type of functionality (I say listened, because several of the reviews after launch also mentioned something similar).
Thanks
Iain
I believe the buttons stop working as Honeycomb has a bottom software menu.
I would also like to see performance results compared to Gingerbread as far as doing day to day tasks, email, playing vids, games, etc..
Hc
So i can confirm that the Hardware Buttons aren't Working but i think with hc u got real multitasking And u got more apps And icons on Ur homescreens..that's what i'm Feeling better with hc..
You also had real multitasking and Gingerbread.
The Honeycomb version is just better for a device with that screen size, I find.
But it's only a beta version, so there are still some bugs..
Mt
In gb u hadn't real Mt..some apps were running in the background but the switcher between the Apps was missing.in hc u got at the Bottom the switcher And the apps are starting at the Same Point u Left it.in gb firefox for Example Started in Most cases from New again...

I wonder is this will be the case in the final HTC release. Seems a crazy decision to me to include the buttons in the design of the Flyer, and then not use them.,especially as there would be associated costs to have included them.
HTC have said from the beginning that Flyer would get an upgrade to Honeycomb, and I doubt that it wasn't aware of Google's plans regarding the soft buttons.
I realise that some will perhaps answer that Gingerbread needed the buttons, but given the Sense overly I'd have thought there could have been a software solution.
Of course, it could be as simple that Honeycomb is an after thought - Development of Flyer was so far advanced by the time Honeycomb concepts were available from Google (even privately). That the design was hardware design was locked down?.
End of ramble!
Iain
I haven't messed with Honeycomb really, but I'm not sure I'd want to give up the hardware buttons. An option to enable/disable them would be great actually.
I actually love not having the hardware buttons. I thought it would be annoying to me but I find that the on screen back, home, and menu buttons are much more convenient.
And I haven't even run into any bugs yet.
Doesn't having the hc softbuttons on the screen reduce the screen real estate and we end up with less display space?

Yeah one of the reason HC IS better on Bigger Tablets.
What's remarkable is that not only does the Flyer have hardware buttons, they did an impressive job engineering them to rotate with the device.
Personally I prefer hardware buttons. I would prefer even more physical clickable buttons that you can't accidentally activate by just swiping your hand by them. Google's all-software buttons in HC reverse one of Android's main advantages -- hardware buttons.

Is this keyboard optimized for the galaxy note? Meaning if I were to type in landscape mode does it allow me to still see the web page, text message, email ect. That im typing on without pressing back? If not I would say the stock optimized gingerbread keyboard is still better.
Edit: After this thread I decided to buy the keyboard and couldn't be happier. Great layouts and always have been a fan of the arrows since HTC sense. This keyboard is also EXTREMELY fast. FINNALY a keyboard that can keep up! Landscape options are also very awesome. Good stuff.

I prefer Swiftkey Tablet X
I came to the same conclusion just the other day. I was having trouble with typing speed on swiftkey x/swiftkey x tablet so I installed thumb keyboard. After tweaking the cursor row height all the keys line up just right for my thumbs leading to much faster typing for me. The ICS theme is pretty good as well.

Yes you can customize the layout according to whether your in landscape or portrait.
You can also change the size and height of the rows and keys so you can dictate how much screen is used by keyboard. I didn't mess with any of those settings and have no problem with it taking up to much screen or not seeing where I am typing.
The split key layout is nice in landscape because you can reach all the keys with both thumbs. Also in portrait I use the offset layout where the keys are at different heights so your thumbs don't get in the way of each other and allows you to grip the phone comfortably. And there is the standard layout as well.
Tons of options you can change pretty much anything. Try it out you always have 15 minutes to refund. Oh ya plus there are about 30 themes and color combinations for the keyboard. I use the honeycomb theme its awesome
Sent from the only smartphone designed by Chuck Norris
I use Thumb Keyboard for my tablet, but usually for the tiny keyboard on the right, not the split keyboard (hard to reach the middle).
I often switch between sliding & thumb typing, so I've been using Touchpal a lot. I love it's ability to slide up & down on the top & bottom rows to get lots of alternate symbols. For some reason, I really dislike holding down on a key for a second to get to the alternate symbol.
With that in mind, the keyboard I've been using a lot lately is... Keypurr!
Negatives - as far as I can tell, dev's have abandoned it. No replies or updates in 6 months. Can't adjust size of the keyboard.
Pros - Slightly compact layout (not the 'full compact' mode). Ability to slide up & down on all letters for alternate symbols. 12 Pre-defined by user function keys to hit a button on the suggestion area to auto-type out anything you want.
Finally, it also has abbreviations (full customization). So I can set t/the, M/Matthew, x/Alex, v/Steven, idk/I don't know.. and so on.
I wouldn't mind a full querty keyboard with the same functions I like in Keypurr (function keys, abbreviations, sliding on keys for symbols). Anyone know which other keyboard support 1 or more of those features?
EDIT: Testing Perfect Keyboard. It has the shortcut ability, but not slide for symbols. Might write to them to ask.

That's what I was looking for - way to redeem yourself! Thanks!
I was just thinking about this while finishing off my bottle of Buffalo Trace (Yay, bourbon!). If I'm remembering things correctly from back in the day, the formula for android wallpaper sizes is height by 2*width, so technically the correct size would be 1280x1440. Does that sound right? it matches the size, but I'm not thinking too clearly right now...
Not very many 1440 x1280 wallpapers out there. Majority are just nature.
Hopefully we will get more soon.

I had this problem with my display being zoomed on the TV too. I fixed it by going to my actual TV settings and changed the screen mode from Zoom to Natural. If you go to your TV settings and search for Screen Mode or something similar to that, change it from whatever it is currently to a display size that fits the Note 2's display properly.
EDIT: Let me know if that doesn't fix it or if you need help with my advice.
