why not flash pentafives ed05 2.2 then root? is there a reason you want to stay on eclair? I believe superoneclick works on 2.1

its been a long time since ive done this, but dont you have to root, to flash clockwork recovery, to allow you to flash a custom rom? (in that order)

no thats old school...most roms here are prerooted now. u can simply odin powerwashed eh09 gingerbread and be rooted, debloated, and ready to roll. then go back to odin and flash cwm 2.5.x, so you can do nandroid backups and flash other roms like tsm 1.0. If you want aosp mtd roms such as miui,cm7, tsm pool party, all you need to do is odin cwm4 fixed for cm7, three finger boot into recovery, wipe data, cache, dalvik, and install mtd zip. Once it boots never use three finger recovery again. you can access recovery by long pressing the power button. pre rooting is a thing of the past and is only needed if your looking to stay on a stock rom to debloat, and use root apps such as wireless tether, root explorer, tibu, etc...

im trying to stay away from using a computer, can i just go to the market, dl rom manager, flash cwm, and flash my com rom?

nope, rom manager only works "ok" with mtd based roms...I highly suggest you use a computer and familiarize yourself with odin or heimdall. I don't think there is a root method out there that will work without a pc for the fascinate.

so then i NEED to be rooted, to flash cwm?
this is what im thinking
connect to pc, and use 1 click root, to root my 2.1 stock phone
dl rom manager from the market, and flash the cwm
install my customrom.zip (com rom)
all done?

yes in this case you will need to be rooted to flash cwm, since you doing it thru rom manager... those steps should work

[Q] How To Unroot?

I unrooted my friends Vibrant using the SuperOneClick and it still has the Quick Boot on it. How do I remove it and does this still mean his device is rooted? He has the official 2.2 update if that makes a differnce I tried using this tutorial to do it

How much easier is using odin vs One Click Root/UnRoot (Mac and PC)?
With One Click, simply download, make sure your phone is in USB Debug mode, click Root, which puts you into recovery, install update zip, install RM/CWR,flash custom rom and reboot, done.
Just sayin.
ODIN:
download files and ODIN to pc
Load odin
Put phone in download mode (both volume buttons)
Run the files via odin
Bam, phone is stock
Root:
download file
Place in sdcard/
Phone into recovery (both volume and power)
Select to install update.zip
Reboot
Bam, rooted
Recovery:
Download rom manager in market
Flash cwr in rom manager
Reboot into recovery from rom manager app
Select reinstall packages
Select to backup
bam, custom recovery and a system backup
Install custom rom:
Download rom
place in sdcard/
Reboot into recovery
Select install from sdcard
Flash rom
Reboot phone
Bam, custom rom
I think I'm going to use the one click since I have a Mac and I'm more comfortable using it over my folks PC . The One Click will work even though he had the Kies 2.2 update. If so then I'm ready to root it. He was wondering how to overclock it and get wireless tether. I have a Droid X so its way Easy for me but I know his phone is tricky

Getting Replacement Fascinate. Best Root method?

I'm assuming it will come with either ED01 or ED03.
In past, I would just Odin deodexed EB01 (since it has root in package) and then flash whatever rom I want. Was on Evil Fascination and will probably go back to that.
Just wondering if that is easiest route or if I should go thru the copy update.zip, SU, busybox method? Or another method?
Thanks!

Flash this via cwm recovery: http://www.mediafire.com/?38vozx7n37u02a5 When you flash this su zip, after the phone boots download titanium backup and open it. It will tell you that it could not acquire root privileges but simply hit the "problems" button and the hit the "get busy box" button. Boom, you're rooted. So naturally you will have to odin cwm recovery first. Here is the link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36791/CWM3_Voodoo.tar.md5

In looking at info on the cwm3_voodoo.tar.md5 file, I read this:
NOTICE:
If you are nonvoodoo and plan to stay nonvoodoo make sure you have a disable-lagfix file in the voodoo folder on your sdcard
For some reason, even though this is a recovery it's still doing the voodoo conversion.
So from here on out, I am not responsible for your spontaneous voodoo conversions.
YOU'VE BEEN WARNED
***************************************
It can't convert to voodoo if it's not rooted yet, right? So I shouldn't have issues odin'ing cwm3, boot into recovery, and then flash su file?
It also says flash kernel of choice if coming from stock. Is that necessary prior to updating busybox in TiB? Does stock kernel break the root once it boots? Or can I still get to TiB and then flash custom EF rom, which has a kernel included?

Yes, it can convert to voodoo without being rooted. You should be able to flash that recovery with no issues.

You have to install the recovery first and then you flash the su zip from that recovery. Once you are rooted the stock kernel won't break your root.

Stock kernel won't break your root, but it will convert you back to stock recovery if you let the phone reboot. So if you are planning on flashing a custom ROM, you are probably better off flashing the custom kernel right after flashing the SU zip. Then you can flash your choice of custom rom in another CWM session without having to ODIN CWM again.

If your intending on going back to a custom rom then why are you wanting to root stock? Just flash cwm then rom, kernel of choice.
ODIN ====> CWM. Best way!
A recovery only flash should not do conversion. If it does then the person who made the flashable zip/ tar did not take out blm8.

If you Odin cwm recovery and flash a custom rom it will root your phone. If CR and EF didn't contain root then people would lose root when flashing them. This is not the case. They have root, flash away. And you can flash a custom rom without being rooted. Root access gives you root permissions when operating the phone when it is on. When you boot into cwm recovery the phone itself isn't booted. Cwm recovery is a form of root access in itself.

[Q] Clockwork Recovery wont Flash

Tried to install CM7 on my Vibrant 2.2 Rooted using Superoneclick method - Phone has superuser, Busybox, rom manager premium. I tried to flash clockwork recovery...
Clicked on Rom Manager
Clicked Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Tried both Galaxy S Vibrant and Vibrant (MTD) options (seperately)
current recovery showed both versions after each flash and reboot
Clicked reboot into recovery
Phone boots into stock recovery
Tried reinstall packages like 5 times after each flash
always get signature verification errors
Im stuck here.. Could not figure out how to get past this issue
Any help greatly appreciated!
Only flash cwm recovery mtd 2.xxx since you're going from froyo to cm7.
Flash the recovery again, reboot into recovery, reinstall package, wipe data, reboot......sometimes this worked when I had issues a while ago.
Please back up everything before you flash...
I have just learned that I have the Stock 3e recovery on my phone... I have read that on the I9000 that you have to flash a new kernal... Im not sure if this is my problem, but last time I did this I bricked my phone where it would not power at ALL

Thats the exact Thread I was using before
1. Download ROM Manager from the Market.
2. Flash Recovery.
3. Choose Vibrant as your phone.
4. Accept the Superuser prompt.
5. On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
6. Watch the backup go!
After step 5 It always says signature verification failed, no matter how man times i click it or reboot phone
Even if I force reboot by holding all three buttons or reboot into recovery from rom managers menu it does this
Have you heard of this 3e recovery not working and only 2e works

if u want to install cm7 on ur phone its really quite easy! odin back to stock 2.1 as 2.1 is easier to root then froyo. Once ur at 2.1 root the eclair method by installing the update package twice and the second time it should turn green. Now go into Rom manager premium it wont u download the cm7 nightlies if ur on 2x! Pick Vibrantmtd and pick 3x not 2x. then when thats done go into downloads and download the newest cm7 nightlie which is 33#. For ur first nightlie always choose all three! Wipe data, wipe dalvik, backup rom. Then when u move on to #34 u only have to pick the 2-wipe dalvik and backup rom. As its always good to wipe data on ur first cm7 nightlie. With rom manager premium its as easy as 1.2,3

Lol Tried this when I had to flash back to stock after I soft bricked my phone... For some reason, every time I tried to root it again it would always tell me I was already rooted, but would not let me actually reinstall the packages... I tried the update.zip method and the superoneclick with both exploits. Its like even if I wipe it something gets stuck behind..

Was it the same software that you flashed? cause the Eugene software in your link always puts the I9000 software on it... Its a Vibrant(SGH-T959) and the boot screen changed to I9000 and it wouldnt boot past that when I flashed it with yours.

very simple, if you have already done the "flash CWM" via Rom Manager, then you should have an update.zip file in your root. Odin back to stock and hit reinstall packages. It should reboot into recovery. Hit reinstall packages again and you should have green clockwork..
OR
You can try to flash a stock + voodoo kernel via Odin as well.

[Q] Vibrant - rooting - roming - lag fix

Okay so im new to this and i have been working all day on trying to get my vibrant modded a little .. My earlier thread shows that i had some trouble and finally got it back to its factory settings .
Now I have upgraded to 2.2 and i rooted it using super one click rooting because I cannot root with an update.zip because I get a signature verification failure. But I realized i need to do this anyways to run a rom even using rom manager ..
So i tried to install 3e recovery installer which is suppose to override this but for some reason it fails to install. It says checking for root: and it fails.
Someone seemed to have the same problem in a different thread and said they deleted some bloatware with terminal emulator but i used termaninal backup (or something like that) to delete some bloatwares but this still did not fix the problem for me.
What is my problem? And what lag fix can i use for my vibrant when i get all this to work?
Fastest way to obtain root :
1. is to flash stock JFD rom (use AIO tools.
2. flash Clockwork recovery through Rom manager (get it from market)
3. Flash any rooted rom (with Voodoo lagfix) through CWM.
And most important thing, if you don't know what you are doing with your phone don't do anything.

i thought you needed root to flash recovery from rom manager...
anyways, my method of rooting is to use the recovery 3e to 2e batch (dont wanna call it an install cause it doesnt install really) and then flash a root update.zip from the 2e recovery you just flashed.
what may be happening to your 3e 2e thing is that you might of forgotten to enable usb debugging... you do this by going in the menu>applications>development>usb debugging on
make sure the phone is plugged in to the computer and debug is on and run 3e to 2e...
then get ahold of a root update.zip and rename it update.zip, put it on the root of your internal sd card (\mnt\sdcard\) and go into recovery (power phone off, hold vol up and down buttons and then hold power button at the same time until you see the vibrant boot screen. when you get into recovery, hit reinstall packages.
sorry for the wall of text; hope this helps.

[Q]CwM Recovery Won't Stick!!

I am having an issue with flashing CWM via Odin and keeping it there. I flash CWM via ODIN, I've tried 3 diff versions of CWM , Red One, Voodoo (blue one) and the 3.0.0.8 via rom manager (orange one) each time i flash one, i can boot into after flashing it via ODIN, but when i reboot the phone. CWM is gone and its back to the factory samsung recover "for all devices" nonsense. I have been able to obtain root by flashing via the SU zip method and I have root, i just can't flash a rom b/c cwm wont stick....any ideas? search returns nothing!
Thats because you need a modified kernal for cwm to stick.
Here is the modified stock kernal for a froyo rom. put this in the pda function of odin.

did you odin a cwm recovery after the modified stock kernal?
Make sure your battery is removed when entering download mode to flash cwm via odin.
Once it shows successful, remove the cable.
insert battery and immediately enter cwm using the 3 finger method.
Flash a custom stock kernel.
choose "reboot system now"
let the system boot up.
then boot back to cwm recovery and flash your rom of choice.
