Edit - Fixed the problem, sorry for the question
So I just made the switch from the Epic to the Photon. And please feel free to call me a dumb-a$$, but I am trying to connect the HD dock to my monitor. So here's the thing, I only have 1 HDMI port on the monitor, and I have this dock and my laptop to connect. I thought I could connect the laptop via VGA and the dock via HDMI, but the only way the dock shows up on the monitor is if I shut down the PC. Is there any way, to get this into a "split" screen type of thing (my guess is no), could I do it if I had a HDMI splitter (would that work?)
Sorry for being a noob...please don't hate on me...

It helps a LOT if you tell us how you fixed it. You'd be surprised how many people might want to know this same thing.

I think I was bit "overwhelmed" when I first got the phone home (there were so many fun things to play with) that my sense of logic must have gone out the window (I figured everyone was laughing at me for even posting the question). But to answer your question, the problem is that my monitor doesn't have "PIP" (pic in pic) so no real way to get both the Photon and laptop to display at the same time. But, I can use the laptop display for email, web, (laptop stuff) and the monitor for the Photon doc. What I did was I bought a HDMI splitter (it allows for 3 HD devices), then I set the monitor (in Windows) to display on both monitors separately (my stupid calibration tool was not real easy to allow this, but I finally got it to show the monitors as separate items instead of dupes). Then I just switch to the dock (on the HDMI switch), open up the laptop screen, and voila, photon on the monitor, laptop on the laptop monitor (sort of like a dual monitor). It only works when I switch to the photon dock setting (on the switch). FYI, the switch was like $15, and I spent an extra $5 and got a small, portable keyboard (and mouse) and hooked it into the dock.
My HP 17 inch laptop is two years old and the processor is struggling to cope which is slowing everything down. I use it at home to surf the Web, view stock market charts, email, print boarding passes, produce DVD's from my Nexus One Videos, and store all of my Nexus One videos and pictures etc. I have a DVD player so I can watch my Nexus One videos on the TV once I have them on DVD. I chose a laptop with a 17 inch screen so that I could have multiple stock market charts on the screen together.
I have updated my Nexus One to a Galaxy Note which is great when on the move, but now I need to update my laptop. I hoped I would be able to replace my laptop with something like the Prime but after looking closely at the Prime I don't think it is capable. So I have bought a Sony Vaio laptop with a 15.5 inch screen with a 2048X1024 resolution, 500Gb hard disk, DVD and Core i5 processor. The smaller screen copes with my stock market charts well because of the increased resolution and the i5 processor means everything is fast.
My wife has a 7 inch Galaxy Tab P1000 which she uses for reading ebooks, surfing the Web, email, watching video etc in a more convenient way than on the laptop. However, I am not able to view my stock market charts or produce a DVD from my Note videos on the P1000. Nevertheless, I am planning to update the P1000 to a GT 7.7 when it gets Ice Cream Sandwich for we need something in between the Note and the laptop that can be carried in a handbag.
So I wondered how many people here can use the prime to do all their computing tasks without the need for a laptop?
Works good enough for me. EVen before this I was using jailbroken Ipad modded very heavily. SINCE Ihopped on the tablet scene, I've found no use for a regular PC or laptop anymore as this device does everything I need. Only time I need laptop is for rooting when no apk or jailbreak method isbavailable on the device itself. PLUS prime has great USB host capabilitites n developers in developement section even added more drivers. So it works for me. Based on what you said your uses are. PRIME should excel easily at what you need it for.
Ubuntu Chroot, once I get it done will be the mainstay of my Prime+Dock. LibreOffice, full-fledged browsing, full-on computing will make 99% of my tasks workable.
I have a desktop I do the majority of my typing on, as I like a full sized keyboard for typing a lot. However, I can do quite a bit on the Prime already without having to resort to the Desktop.
Browsing, email, messaging etc.
I also have a small, 500 lumen LED HD projector I just bought (in mail) that I'll be plugging into with the Prime's HDMI output: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009334&Tpk=Acer K330
I'll have a large clear screen I can put multiple windows on and multi-task just as well as my desktop, but will be portable.
For the *vast* majority of what I do, the 10 inch screen is adequate. The touch screen is fantastic for links - I love browsing the web by finger vs mouse. Other times however, I really miss the accuracy of the mouse and might resort to a stylus or the trackpad (the trackpad on/off button is fantastic, I love it!)
I have not had to load a DVD with my Prime yet, so I'm not sure what it might take. However, that is one reason I keep my desktop.
---------
Short story - It *is* my laptop replacement, and could very easily replace my desktop once Ubuntu Chroot is loaded and the projector arrives.
I'll have to investigate a portable USB DVD burner. However it does notes, powerpoint, web, music, videos... it's perfect for laptop replacement for me

Thanks for your reply which reminded me that I also need my laptop for running Kies.
I still use my Dell laptop for my photography and design work. It stays in my study / office.
My Prime resides in my lounge for emailing, social media, browsing, gaming etc.
It fills a niche but didn't replace my laptop.
Honestly, I recently returned my Prime because I noticed how much more I am dependent on my/a laptop respectively MS products.
It almost broke my heart to return it.
I don't need a laptop anymore but I would never part ways with my desktop. I still get plenty of use out of it for gaming, heavy typing, and anything that requires some power or a bigger screen.
cannot yet get rid of my laptop - TurboTax has to run somewhere and there is no Android version!
i have retired my personal laptop at this point. I have a work-issued laptop that is required to remain with me most of the time, as i have to be on our VPN to access most of our production and database systems. The stock ICS browser has no problem with Netsuite though, so i get away with that from time to time.

Thanks for all your replies. The Prime is a superb tablet but it seems the laptop/desktop is not dead yet. Enjoy your Prime as I am enjoying my Note.
Using a laptop as a momentary replacement for my desktop computer while staying in Japan. The Prime is good, but no Tablet is ever gonna replace my Desktop Computer. And no Laptop. (I hate Laptops, but couldn't take my Desktop Computer to Japan...)
I use Splashtop Remote to access a PC to do the heavy lifting.
When away from home, I tunnel it through ssh using ConnectBot.

Splashtop closes quite a bit. Not sure if I'll keep using it or not. LogMeIn Ignition is pretty tight, but it is $30. It does have security built in though. No tunneling needed.

I have to admit I havn´t tried Splashtop before returning my Prime.
But isn´t it a bit...I dunno...complicated to always have a internet connection and a PC running if you want to do "heavy lifting"?

This for me. Heavy gaming, photoshop projects, more power.
As a portable device, the TP does more than I could ask for.
I have my computer go into an s3 sleep when I'm not using it so it wastes very little power, and i can just wake it up with wol when I need to use it.
I've been using team viewer and xtralogics remote desktop but I'm looking for a touch based solution that uses rdp tried splashtop but screen comes up blank unless I have an active Rep session or am already logged on
I have a laptop and a desktop. With the prime i could do without the laptop. Since i like to game i would probably stick with the desktop. I'm not sure i will ever purchase another laptop if there continues to be tablets with docks that are as nice. If a manufacture could figure out a way to integrate a smartphone into a case with the form factor of the prime and keyboard dock i would use that. Sort of like the atrix with its dock but only if the phone wasn't sticking up so awkwardly. If it could be done so the phone could be flush inside the dock and act as the track pad or something while docked i would get a setup like that.
The battery on my MacBook recently stopped working so it can't be off the charger. I've already replaced the battery once before so I'm not going to do it again given its old age. Now it stays in my room for when I need to do heavy lifting like DVD ripping, Ms office stuff for work, etc. Other than that, the prime has replaced it for my portable needs. I'm still testing out splashtop and logmein to see if I can bridge that gap further, but I'm having some issues making sure my Mac is available and not sleeping so the prime can find it.
Evo shift, it sounds like you want the padphone. Its confirmed to work with the tf101 dock.

These tablets are not laptop replacements. They are netbook replacements, where netbook is defined as what netbooks were originally intended for (Chromebook is closer), instead of just a low end Ultra Mobile Laptop.
Once I get my dock, I will not need anything else, except my home PC for D3D games and my workstation for printing timesheets; the cloud print stuff doesn't work with my Linux setup at work. I also use a Debian chroot on my tablets .

Hi all,
I am a total newb at android and anything here on the board. From what I can tell: nice work guys! Considering we are all newbs with the prime I also want to throw in my question and share with you my experience.
I am wondering if your TF 201 is recognised by USB 3.0? My Laptop Asus N73SV (Win7 64Bit) connects only by USB 2.0 through AsusSync.
Having received one of the first designated 64GB Primes and later my dearly anticipated European hillbilly keyboard I today think the inlay oft he tablet fell once or twice of the production-line. So I wonder if the usb3.0 issue might be related to that or is it more a general thing?
Since last Monday I am in contact with Asus Support and they advised me to send in the tablet because of the lousy WiFi/ Bluetooth and GPS reception. Having opened the flaps of the tablet to connect the dock yesterday I want to give the whole setup back! I could live with the strong fit of the two pieces (TF101 docked and undocked very smoothly but I exchanged because of a broken WiFi connection). There fell a tiny piece of plastic out of the right bottom hole and an even more tiny one dropped after shut-down vibrating today. I will insist on a replacement.
I still think the Prime suits me best out of all silent computer devices and I will just wait another month or so till I get a perfect one. Sad, though I doubt a little the approach of a single tasking OS on such a blazing tablet ??!!
Anyway, I wish you a rock-solid TF201s and hopefully soon a little bit of a more sophisticated OS than this one. Google got the market, now they should invest in their power costing OS. Why not buying into the MeeGo which Nokia abandonned. My son, an apple fanboy, was stunned by the silky sliding of the N9 screens. Or will MS put it’s WindowsPhone on the Eeepad? When will ubuntu work on tegra3 processor and touchscreen …….
USB 3.0
I have an ASUS N53SV and it connects fine to the USB3.0 port and the USB2.0 port without asus sync. I have an BC series TF201 64G and the PC runs WIndows 7 64 bit
Thanks, so does my N73. Have you actually tried to Asus Sync your N53SV via USB 3.0 with the Prime?
For me no luck. Could be the N73 though 'cause it also doesn't boot up when I have an external USB 3.O Harddrive connected to it. I usually forget after a week and while reboot I wonder why the dumb thing hangs

Tried it with asus sync and like you it doesn't connect when connected into the usb 3.0 but does work with the usb 2.0. I have a Thinkpad with USB 3.0 I will try it on that one to see if it is a ASUS pc issue.
Edit: The thinkpad doen't work with the asus sync at all not on the USB2.0 or the USB3.0, it connects fine as a drive, tried rebooting the pc,tablet and changing the cable to the TF101 but it doesn't work.
Thank you XXRAY, so why not try to figure this one out and let's go into details:
I assume your N53s setup is also: the hdmi1.x next to the usb3.0 next to another usb2.0.
2 questions:
- have you ever noticed a short interruption to your hdmi-device when you connect your external usb3.0-harddisk?
- Does your N53 boot up when the external usb3.0-harddisk is connected?
Well, if you are curious, you might try it, otherwise: No sweat man! Your News just comes in nicely with me 'cause I am going to send my N73 to ASUS anyway as long as it is still with guarantee. I am fed up with unplugging USB3.0 devices to start that N73 Beast (it handles litteraly anything I throw at it and the Prime together with SplashtopStreamer is the missing terminal I need).
Maybe just one last question: Do you know how to setup "Boot on Lan" on your N53?(I assume we have a similar bios ...).
I really appreciate your help and I hope you won't have hazzles with your TF201 as I do. I will try to get a replacement later on today.
Sent the notebook in and ASUS replaced the mainboard. Device boots now also if there is a USB3.0 harddisk plugged in. No further testing with the Prime though. It went for RMA as well and the outgoing of this is not clear yet. Case closed.
Hey guys i am very curious those of you that own a Transformer Prime, along with the keyboard dock as well as a Zenbook or a similar Ultrabook. I ask this because i am thinking of also getting a entry model Asus UX31 Zenbook "good price". However i am asking myself do i really need one? Those of you who have one have you used it much since you have had your Prime?
Now the Zenbook or a similar Ultrabook will not be used for work or anything school related. I just would like to have a "main center" where i can sorta get my Windows Experience as well as my Root/Rom files . And all that blah blah stuff. And some occasional Minecraft gaming nothing more serious than that. Thats what my Xbox is for.
I currently have a Transformer Prime with the keyboard dock which i have been using as my main daily machine for fun & web browsing etc.... I do have a 2011 Mac mini hooked up to my main media center TV. But i haven't really used it since i got my Prime other than some random Minecraft gaming. So i did think about selling my Mac Mini if i got a Zenbook. I could always hook the Zenbook up to the TV & browse XDA while i have my TP in my lap checking emails. Just kidding lol.
So basically is it worth it really to own both for someone like me who dosen't need it for "work" so to say. I usually just use my GF's windows laptop for my root files & such but was thinking on getting myself a ultrabook. But honestly the more i think of it it could be a waste of money. Id much rather use that money towards a new international Galaxy Note phone Thoughts?
So far i have done so much with my Prime from hooking up a full size wireless keyboard & mouse up to it. Mini HDMI to my TV (Really cool!). Used my wireless Xbox controller with Emulators & even hooked up my portable Hard drive. The things you can do are almost endless. Other than actually run Windows. I ask myself do i really need Windows? The mobile Minecraft is fun but its not the full shabang.
Can you use any wireless keyboard and mouse? I dont have keyboard dock and would be interested in knowing more about it. How do you connect portable hard drive? Is that over wireless?
Yes even I have used micro HDMI to HDMI for HDTV and it is cool
Yes you can use a wireless keyboard & mouse. I bought a $25 microsoft keyboard/mouse that came with a little tiny usb dongle. I just plug it in the keyboard dock & works great. Keeps the screen clean .
Same thing with the hard drive, plug it in and it picks it up the same way if you were to slip in a micro SD card.
Now, i do have the keyboard dock which makes life easier which comes with the built in USB & SD card reader.. But if that is not something you aren't interested in i believe you can by ASUS USB connection kit. Which would plug into the charging pin. I think the kit is $14.99 at New Egg.
I highly recommend the keyboard dock thought if you can find one. So much you can do with it & not to mention the added battery life & netbook type experience it gives the TP.
Hope that helps.
Here is that USB connector that i was talking about. If you can find one though the keyboard dock is the way to go it would be less cumbersome.

Same here. They ASUS ultrabook is super nice & my local BB had in on sale for $999 for the 13". But being i would basically have to add a extra $500, thats basically another Transformer Prime!
I just wish we could get these bugs ironed out!
I have had this prime since they first came out. I never bought the matching keyboard. I'm wondering if I would like the prime better if I had the keyboard dock? I find myself reverting to my junk laptop a lot of the time (windows vista home premium) mostly for web browsing. I don't think it's screen size (15 vs 10?). I like using a physical keyboard at times. I can use my finger as a mouse but the physical keyboard seems to be what drives me to the laptop.
Those of you that have the keyboard what do you think?

Got my keyboard for Christmas. It totally "transforms" the experience. USB port, full size SD card slot and an extra battery. How can you go wrong? Typing this reply on it now. Totally worth it. I can't remember the last time I charged just my tablet. People always ask if I like my "netbook" and thats when I pop the tablet off the dock and it amazes them.
BTW the TF701 keyboard and the Prime are compatible.

Should I get the TF700 or the TF200 dock? I'm trying to find the differences on google right now.
The TF201 has a slightly bigger battery. There is a small balance issue with the 201's dock meaning the tablet can fall over when docked. I don't think it's a big deal. Mine has never fallen over. The 701's dock is said to have fixed that problem. I don't know, I've only messed with a friends 701 with the dock and didn't try to test that.
Well I would have dumped the whole tablet to trash can if it had no keyboard dock. The keyboard is really good and it is pleasure to write with.
I'm a little confused on the keyboard dock. I see the TF200 and TF700 dock but not finding TF701 docks for sale. Am I missing something? It looks like the TF701 was just unveiled this month?
Think I might buy a referb TF700 dock from Best Buy. It has a really good price on it.
Sorry, the Infinity Pad is a TF700. For some reason I've always call it a TF701.
The Prime is a TF201
Using my Prime without keyboard too. I think it will not replace computer anyway. I'm ok with its battery life and never needed USB or SD slot before.
I dont own a dock, but i got to use one on a TF101, I personally dont like the size of the keyboard (or using the trackpad)
so what i did was i ordered a transformer USB adapter off amazon for 10$, a hub for another 10$, and i connected everything up (mouse, keyboard, mem. card reader, etc [it was a 8 port hub)
just note that the adapter was meant for ALL transformer tablets, so it might be a little wiggly, which can be solved by making a cast out of hot plastic (the kind used in 3d printers)
Just an update.
I did go with a transformer dock. A TF700 dock. So far I like it. Only problem I have so far is integration with touch screen and non touchscreen control. Some thins I have to still use my finger (like scrolling a page). Tried using Facebook and it was annoying ( I could be using something wrong). I am still getting used to it but overall I have to say I really do like it better with the dock. Some games/apps change rotation when I need to use a chat function in them (annoying). I will continue to work with and get used to it's functions. The shortcuts on the keyboard are nice at times.

Put you dock into gesture mode (asus customised settings) and then use 2 fingers on the touch pad to scroll

The dock shines when using in conjunction with remote desktop to a decent computer. I run windows 8 on my desktop and using splashtop remote (which makes for a nearly lag free and pretty remote desktop experience) it feels like the transformer prime is running an i5 with ssd and 4gig ram. If you are on local network, it's even possible to stream youtube and video and stuff without any lag, just a very slight delay in sound/image.
So I have a desktop computer which is always on. When I need a tablet I just use the tablet. When I need a laptop I put it in the dock and remote into my desktop and I have a full desktop.
It's even better with a small travel mouse connected to the usb of the dock.
Very versatile this thing, just a shame of the memory and the lag when using it as a tablet.
And of course, when I want a desktop with full size keyboard and no lag big screen gaming ... I just go to my desktop and start where I left of on my tablet. It's great!
