How Many of You Need a Laptop as well as the Prime? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

My HP 17 inch laptop is two years old and the processor is struggling to cope which is slowing everything down. I use it at home to surf the Web, view stock market charts, email, print boarding passes, produce DVD's from my Nexus One Videos, and store all of my Nexus One videos and pictures etc. I have a DVD player so I can watch my Nexus One videos on the TV once I have them on DVD. I chose a laptop with a 17 inch screen so that I could have multiple stock market charts on the screen together.
I have updated my Nexus One to a Galaxy Note which is great when on the move, but now I need to update my laptop. I hoped I would be able to replace my laptop with something like the Prime but after looking closely at the Prime I don't think it is capable. So I have bought a Sony Vaio laptop with a 15.5 inch screen with a 2048X1024 resolution, 500Gb hard disk, DVD and Core i5 processor. The smaller screen copes with my stock market charts well because of the increased resolution and the i5 processor means everything is fast.
My wife has a 7 inch Galaxy Tab P1000 which she uses for reading ebooks, surfing the Web, email, watching video etc in a more convenient way than on the laptop. However, I am not able to view my stock market charts or produce a DVD from my Note videos on the P1000. Nevertheless, I am planning to update the P1000 to a GT 7.7 when it gets Ice Cream Sandwich for we need something in between the Note and the laptop that can be carried in a handbag.
So I wondered how many people here can use the prime to do all their computing tasks without the need for a laptop?

Works good enough for me. EVen before this I was using jailbroken Ipad modded very heavily. SINCE Ihopped on the tablet scene, I've found no use for a regular PC or laptop anymore as this device does everything I need. Only time I need laptop is for rooting when no apk or jailbreak method isbavailable on the device itself. PLUS prime has great USB host capabilitites n developers in developement section even added more drivers. So it works for me. Based on what you said your uses are. PRIME should excel easily at what you need it for.

Ubuntu Chroot, once I get it done will be the mainstay of my Prime+Dock. LibreOffice, full-fledged browsing, full-on computing will make 99% of my tasks workable.
I have a desktop I do the majority of my typing on, as I like a full sized keyboard for typing a lot. However, I can do quite a bit on the Prime already without having to resort to the Desktop.
Browsing, email, messaging etc.
I also have a small, 500 lumen LED HD projector I just bought (in mail) that I'll be plugging into with the Prime's HDMI output: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009334&Tpk=Acer K330
I'll have a large clear screen I can put multiple windows on and multi-task just as well as my desktop, but will be portable.
For the *vast* majority of what I do, the 10 inch screen is adequate. The touch screen is fantastic for links - I love browsing the web by finger vs mouse. Other times however, I really miss the accuracy of the mouse and might resort to a stylus or the trackpad (the trackpad on/off button is fantastic, I love it!)
I have not had to load a DVD with my Prime yet, so I'm not sure what it might take. However, that is one reason I keep my desktop.
---------
Short story - It *is* my laptop replacement, and could very easily replace my desktop once Ubuntu Chroot is loaded and the projector arrives.
I'll have to investigate a portable USB DVD burner. However it does notes, powerpoint, web, music, videos... it's perfect for laptop replacement for me

Thanks for your reply which reminded me that I also need my laptop for running Kies.

I still use my Dell laptop for my photography and design work. It stays in my study / office.
My Prime resides in my lounge for emailing, social media, browsing, gaming etc.
It fills a niche but didn't replace my laptop.

Honestly, I recently returned my Prime because I noticed how much more I am dependent on my/a laptop respectively MS products.
It almost broke my heart to return it.

I don't need a laptop anymore but I would never part ways with my desktop. I still get plenty of use out of it for gaming, heavy typing, and anything that requires some power or a bigger screen.

cannot yet get rid of my laptop - TurboTax has to run somewhere and there is no Android version!

i have retired my personal laptop at this point. I have a work-issued laptop that is required to remain with me most of the time, as i have to be on our VPN to access most of our production and database systems. The stock ICS browser has no problem with Netsuite though, so i get away with that from time to time.

Thanks for all your replies. The Prime is a superb tablet but it seems the laptop/desktop is not dead yet. Enjoy your Prime as I am enjoying my Note.

Using a laptop as a momentary replacement for my desktop computer while staying in Japan. The Prime is good, but no Tablet is ever gonna replace my Desktop Computer. And no Laptop. (I hate Laptops, but couldn't take my Desktop Computer to Japan...)

I use Splashtop Remote to access a PC to do the heavy lifting.
When away from home, I tunnel it through ssh using ConnectBot.

Splashtop closes quite a bit. Not sure if I'll keep using it or not. LogMeIn Ignition is pretty tight, but it is $30. It does have security built in though. No tunneling needed.

I have to admit I havn´t tried Splashtop before returning my Prime.
But isn´t it a bit...I dunno...complicated to always have a internet connection and a PC running if you want to do "heavy lifting"?

This for me. Heavy gaming, photoshop projects, more power.
As a portable device, the TP does more than I could ask for.

I have my computer go into an s3 sleep when I'm not using it so it wastes very little power, and i can just wake it up with wol when I need to use it.
I've been using team viewer and xtralogics remote desktop but I'm looking for a touch based solution that uses rdp tried splashtop but screen comes up blank unless I have an active Rep session or am already logged on

I have a laptop and a desktop. With the prime i could do without the laptop. Since i like to game i would probably stick with the desktop. I'm not sure i will ever purchase another laptop if there continues to be tablets with docks that are as nice. If a manufacture could figure out a way to integrate a smartphone into a case with the form factor of the prime and keyboard dock i would use that. Sort of like the atrix with its dock but only if the phone wasn't sticking up so awkwardly. If it could be done so the phone could be flush inside the dock and act as the track pad or something while docked i would get a setup like that.

The battery on my MacBook recently stopped working so it can't be off the charger. I've already replaced the battery once before so I'm not going to do it again given its old age. Now it stays in my room for when I need to do heavy lifting like DVD ripping, Ms office stuff for work, etc. Other than that, the prime has replaced it for my portable needs. I'm still testing out splashtop and logmein to see if I can bridge that gap further, but I'm having some issues making sure my Mac is available and not sleeping so the prime can find it.
Evo shift, it sounds like you want the padphone. Its confirmed to work with the tf101 dock.

These tablets are not laptop replacements. They are netbook replacements, where netbook is defined as what netbooks were originally intended for (Chromebook is closer), instead of just a low end Ultra Mobile Laptop.
Once I get my dock, I will not need anything else, except my home PC for D3D games and my workstation for printing timesheets; the cloud print stuff doesn't work with my Linux setup at work. I also use a Debian chroot on my tablets .

Nook Color or Laptop Dock?

I'm stuck in a decision between the NC or the Atrix laptop dock. Money is not an issue in this decision.
Honeycomb 7" tablet or accessory that is useless without the phone?
Thank you all for your time.

Well there ya go. Highly customizable device, or a laptop dock that has webtop.
You can install Cyanogen and stuff like that, plus it's much less than the dock.
However, you can have the laptop which charges your phone. I bought one yesterday and tried it out. I like it, but kind of wish I spent the money on a new tablet.
If money isn't an issue, get both!
I love my lapdock. I use it instead of a PC now (no joke). Yeah it's slower than a quad core intel box but who cares. Pimpn' aint easy..

Not to mention all the looks you'll get when you have a laptop with a phone sticking out of it
I'm responding to you on my laptop dock. I have a nook color, a laptop dock and a decent laptop and it may just be the novelty but I like the laptop dock. I should note I'm also biased because I got the lapdock with the letstalk firesale so it was pretty cheap.
the nook color is great but I cant find uses for it other than reading and playing casual games on it. The lapdock gives me a charger/normal dock when its closed, and when its opened I can take notes in google docks and text in class without the professor stopping class to admonish me. I bought a datel wireless wii retro controller and I've got all my emulators on here now, its all very neat package. It reminds me of an apple product, it does what I want, and not much else.Oh I should say, hulu works but its slower than a decent pc.
I'm going to sell the nook color, its got gingerbread on it but I hardly use it with the lapdock around and 4" is big enough to read on. The nook color is a great device and I'll sell you mine in fact if you decide on it but I wouldnt blame you if you went with the lapdock.
I don't have a laptop dock so I can't speak for that, but I am really diggin' my Nook Color rooted with a custom Froyo2.2 rom tethered to my Atrix. I travel some and on a plane and the Nook is perfect for that imho. At home someone ALWAYS has my Nook. If it isn't my Wife catching up on her soaps it is my Daughter watching some Hannah Montana. Then the Boy gets it when (if) the girls let it down and he goes to town playing games. I had to wait for quite some time today just to put a custom bootimage on the darn thing.
Good thing that I have the Atrix to play with...
That dock has to be so cool it hurts. But I wouldn't trade my Nook for it. Maybe 2laptop docks, if there was an extra phone included. But that's the only way. Now if that dock was touchscreen as well as keyboard/mouse then I might fold.
For $250 bucks the nook color is a steal. But then again obviously im bias . But seriously the xoom is sweet and all but it isnt $700 cool. 250 and its a a good ereader and can run froyo, cm7 (2.3) and honey comb.....you can even dual boot it. Right now I've been playing n64 on it a ton, never knew I missed star fox so much :-(. Oh, and battery...right now im at 73% unplugged for 3 days 12 hours. And you can now tether it to your phone and use the gps on your nook. IMO if you want the latop dock just buy a netbook and use the phone portal.
Sent from my Nook Color on Honeycomb 1.1 OC
Now that Bluetooth's working, you should get a Nook Color, a case that lets you prop it up in landscape, and a small BT keyboard (the Motorola one maybe?). But I'm also biased
Hmm little hard too decide if i had too make a decision, Which i have the laptop dock which i use it everyday because i watch movies on it and it even charges my phone at the same time and sometimes i don't even have too charge the laptop dock for up too 2 days sense the battery on it lasts really long. I like too see a netbook do that Which i have 2 and the battery life on them don't compare too the laptop dock life.
But i also have the samsung galaxy tab which is overclocked too 1.4ghzs and running voodoo kernel and i really like it which i take with me also but i mostly use the atrix and dock more than it lol.
Laptop dock ain't for everyone but i like mine.
Cant wait till custom roms and the webtop gets customized which should make it run so much better and im sure it will happen. Even a overclock kernel will make the webtop run better.
Oh dear, Oh dear, I am so pleased I came here. And I am basically clueless having just arrived from the iPhone world. Thank you for the guidance. Heading out for a Nook.
On another note, for purely aesthetic reasons, I could not resist buying an Apple bluetooth keyboard last night and trying to get it to get with it with the Atrix. It ain't happening; any wise offerings would be great.

I never knew the laptop dock got that much battery, that's pretty cool though. I guess it comes down to the individual. I'm already lugging my m11x (I use the term lugging loosely since it's only like a 4 lb laptop/netbook) to work everyday so for me to have that laptop dock with me isn't practical but I can see how it could be to people. Obviously my atrix is noticibly faster than my NC but it isn't slow by any means, but for $250 it fits my needs for random movies, angry birds, and the n64 emulator.
So honestly I think both are great, just pick one that fits your life and needs more..... Then buy the other with the next check :-D

Maybe wait and get one of the new tablets or galaxy tab. I do have the nook color myself and like it, the bt will work decent soon, the only downside is you cant put it on a tv, or can you? On the other hand laptop dock can be done via webtop hack+usb charger and some bt kb and mouse.

Ya wouldn't make sense too get the laptop dock if you already have the m11x which is also good on battery life from what i herd, Almost got one myself couple days ago but decided just too get a 9cell for my asus 1201n for now which does decent on most games and i do like to play my windows games when im on the go sometimes.
Ya i was surprised how well the battery is on the laptop dock is, Because from what i herd its around 4000mah ony but i guess from having just the screen and keyboard and mouse ony helps alot and than the phone which ony takes couple watts probably.

Yep you can go that way which i knew about it before i got the laptop dock but you wont have the nice big 11.6 screen too watch videos or browse the web on the go
Watching videos on the 4in screen now feels a bit weird too me even tho i did watch alot of movies on my zune hd which is 3in but than i got the galaxy tab 7in and wouldn't go back anything smaller for watching videos well more like movies sense i could watch youtube videos and stuff on the 4in screen.
Than i would have too carry more stuff with me mouse keyboard and a usb charger with the laptop dock i have a all in one.
Alot of people that wouldn't bother them, But i hate carrying alot of stuff with me than when i have too leave from somewhere i have too put all that stuff away lol

try this:
1.) turn on bluetooth on phone (check 'make discoverable' box)
2.) turn on keyboard in pairing mode (led should be blinking)
3.) scan for devices on phone
4.) select the keyboard, and when pairing request comes up type '1234' or '0000'
5.) immediately after type the same 4 digit code from above into the keyboard and press return, and you should be connected.
let me know if that works, i had similar issues trying to pair a microsoft bluetooth keyboard (wireless entertainment keyboard 7000, awesome btw, touchpad and shortcuts all work) but following those steps works every time for me now.
Thank you, Thank you, worked like a charm. Much appreciated. I can take the plastic wrapper off this keyboard. Pause, I'll check out your reccommended keyboard first.

you're welcome!
and to chime in on the original poster's question, i would go with the nook color now for the price/customizability. The laptop dock still continues to intrigue me... however i refuse to buy at its current price.

Turn your Flyer into a 2nd PC monitor

I tried iDisplay which allows you to use your android phone or tablet as a second monitor. You can find it on the Android Market.
I got it to work while connected via USB but not via WiFi. It's probably a network setting issue on my router (disabled port).
USB works pretty well. Just like having a real external monitor, you can extend your monitor to the Flyer.
The cool thing is that both touch and the Flyer keyboard works while in dual display.
You can also "minimize" the extended PC screen and do other things on the tablet then hop back when you want to. I.e. It doesn't take over the Flyer.
I am using it on a Win 7 64-bit Tablet.
I plan to use it to keep Live Communicator or Outlook open but off the main screen.
It is slightly laggy but I think it's well worth the $5.
I am intrigued, I will have to give it a shot.
Thanks for the heads up.
be interesting to see if it works with our transformers
Confirmed.. works well..

Anyone here own a Prime & also a Asus Zenbook/ultrabook?

Hey guys i am very curious those of you that own a Transformer Prime, along with the keyboard dock as well as a Zenbook or a similar Ultrabook. I ask this because i am thinking of also getting a entry model Asus UX31 Zenbook "good price". However i am asking myself do i really need one? Those of you who have one have you used it much since you have had your Prime?
Now the Zenbook or a similar Ultrabook will not be used for work or anything school related. I just would like to have a "main center" where i can sorta get my Windows Experience as well as my Root/Rom files . And all that blah blah stuff. And some occasional Minecraft gaming nothing more serious than that. Thats what my Xbox is for.
I currently have a Transformer Prime with the keyboard dock which i have been using as my main daily machine for fun & web browsing etc.... I do have a 2011 Mac mini hooked up to my main media center TV. But i haven't really used it since i got my Prime other than some random Minecraft gaming. So i did think about selling my Mac Mini if i got a Zenbook. I could always hook the Zenbook up to the TV & browse XDA while i have my TP in my lap checking emails. Just kidding lol.
So basically is it worth it really to own both for someone like me who dosen't need it for "work" so to say. I usually just use my GF's windows laptop for my root files & such but was thinking on getting myself a ultrabook. But honestly the more i think of it it could be a waste of money. Id much rather use that money towards a new international Galaxy Note phone Thoughts?
So far i have done so much with my Prime from hooking up a full size wireless keyboard & mouse up to it. Mini HDMI to my TV (Really cool!). Used my wireless Xbox controller with Emulators & even hooked up my portable Hard drive. The things you can do are almost endless. Other than actually run Windows. I ask myself do i really need Windows? The mobile Minecraft is fun but its not the full shabang.
Can you use any wireless keyboard and mouse? I dont have keyboard dock and would be interested in knowing more about it. How do you connect portable hard drive? Is that over wireless?
Yes even I have used micro HDMI to HDMI for HDTV and it is cool
Yes you can use a wireless keyboard & mouse. I bought a $25 microsoft keyboard/mouse that came with a little tiny usb dongle. I just plug it in the keyboard dock & works great. Keeps the screen clean .
Same thing with the hard drive, plug it in and it picks it up the same way if you were to slip in a micro SD card.
Now, i do have the keyboard dock which makes life easier which comes with the built in USB & SD card reader.. But if that is not something you aren't interested in i believe you can by ASUS USB connection kit. Which would plug into the charging pin. I think the kit is $14.99 at New Egg.
I highly recommend the keyboard dock thought if you can find one. So much you can do with it & not to mention the added battery life & netbook type experience it gives the TP.
Hope that helps.
Here is that USB connector that i was talking about. If you can find one though the keyboard dock is the way to go it would be less cumbersome.

Same here. They ASUS ultrabook is super nice & my local BB had in on sale for $999 for the 13". But being i would basically have to add a extra $500, thats basically another Transformer Prime!
I just wish we could get these bugs ironed out!

For those of you with tablet, do you also have a laptop, netbook, PC? Family use? :)

If so, did your tablet replace those items and is your tablet for family use?
What do you use it for then? haha
Or do you guys only have the nexus 10 tablet and nothing else?
This is just for curiosuity.
My grandma is old and uses her Ipad (no hate please) for computer uses. Shes not techie at all, so an iPad is perfect for her.
I use my tablet for school and replaced my netbook. I was surprised to find my tablet is faster then my netbook. And I still have a PC for computer use and reports.

I have a TF700- which provides much of the versatility of an Android netbook- with the full tablet experience. I also like the ability- for example- to go into a coffee shop or at home- and either- sit at at table and use a mouse, keyboard- internal/external storage, USB Ethernet, etc., or sit on a couch and browse/type things with the attached keyboard...Occasionally, when WiFi is bad- I use a Bluetooth connection to my smartphone (PDANet/Foxfi) for tablet internet connectivity. I am probably spoiled
The TF700 has largely replaced the home laptop except to do things like web development or tasks were I need a larger screen or applications that can't run under Android. I also have an older desktop- which is seldom used at all.

I have a desktop, used as a PVR/Media NAS server attached to a HDTV, a laptop and of course the N10. Since I started using the N10 for media consumption the laptop is gathering dust. I am not sure what I will do with the laptop over time. I still need it to program my Universal Remote with Win8. Just yesterday I fired up the dual boot laptop and applied software updates to Win8 and Ubuntu 13.04 then promptly turned it off and put it away.
I still do most writing, video editing and all software development on the desktop as the N10 is not well suited or powerful enough for those purposes. As my laptop was primarily used for media consumption the N10 was a natural replacement mainly due to the superior screen and battery life. I also find the N10 to be more convient to use, faster to start up, much more portable and easier to hold anywhere I want to use it (couch, kitchen, bedroom, ... etc).
I'm just now getting to the point where I want to find unique uses for the N10 that the laptop or desktop could not fulfill. I am not a games player so none of my computers are used for that purpose.
I use my n10 for the majority of my computing. I have a Galaxy s3 that I use mostly outside the home (although I do bring the n10 to friends houses etc).
I have a laptop that never sees use and an extremely high end desktop that I use for gaming and video editing.
There is no way the n10 could replace the desktop, and no way the desktop could replace the n10. But it has completely replaced my laptop.
I've got several other devices I consider my 'computers'
Kyocera Rise (which I wish I DID NOT HAVE)
Asus n56v notebook (quad-core intel i7, 2.3GHz, 8GB RAM, 2GB nVidia GT630M)
Lenovo L530 (work computer, terrible crap)
Desktop computer (Asus x58 motherboard, 3.06GHz Intel i7 quad-core, 12GB RAM, 2GB nVidia GT560 Superclocked)
Use of personal laptop:
-Gaming on the go
-Work
-Video editing on the go
-ADB and such on the go
-Netflix when the N10 is out for repair (which has been about 70% of the time I've owned it)
-Kitchen when the N10 is out
Use of desktop:
-Gaming
-Work
-Video editing and recording
-ADB
-Netflix (its hooked up to 2 monitors in my room, or one 42" TV in the den)
-Showing off
-Transcoding
-Media and music
Work laptop:
-MS Office
i used to own a desktop until i purchased my n10 few months ago
now my primary usage mainly on media entertainment, games and surfing the net

I can't remember the last time I opened my laptop. N10 works for pretty much everything.

I mostly use my n10 for caustic, gstomper, web browsing, imgur, some gaming and ebook reading. Got a HP laptop used as a media centre to stream music and films to the n10 and connected to the big TV downstairs. Use a 12gb RAM Sony vaio for ableton and as an extra machine. Also got an Asus tf101 with about 100gb films and music for while we are away from home.
Bit of overkill I know but they do all get used. Could probably get rid of some but can't part with the stuff!
Got them all, N10 /tablet is it's own category.
Only change - lots more web surfing via Android instead of via laptop.
Got a desktop but only use it if I have to do reports. Use my nexus 10 mostly for everything I do like emailing, media consumption, etc.
I wish I could use my N10 primarily... don't think it can replace my desktop for gaming though. Aside from that however, everything else I do on my desktop can be done on the N10.
Heck, even typing this message could've been done on my N10
I have a few other devices.
Nexus 10 mainly for when I don't want to use a tablet or I'm just reading a book, or for night shift at work. My personal device, gf has her own iPad which I use as well for apps that aren't available on android.
Acer iconia a500 which I used prior to the Nexus. Still use it from time to time if the nexus is dead or for nostalgic purposes haha.
Netbook for if I want a portable laptop for basic word processing (though I've been using it less and less since getting the Nexus 10)
Ultrabook for when I want or need a larger screen but not doing anything particularly demanding and still want to be portable
Another more powerful but heavier laptop for when I have more intensive tasks and am out and about (usually gaming at a friends house)
A desktop for when I'm at home and doing heavier gaming and more intensive or longer term tasks (still my primary device)

I don't feel as bad now
I just recently bought a Asus x202e-i3 and added a ssd, so now it is very fast. I find it more usable than my netbook, and half the weight with double the battery life of my 3 year old i3. Its 1366x768 which is the same as that 15.6 laptop. Bonus compared to the netbook is that it can run Ubuntu in Virtual Box just fine. I'm very close to dumping my netbook and 15.6. I also need Windows and Linux, so Android only is not an option.

I have a laptop, a desktop (dual monitors, projector), an N4 and an N10.
Laptop - Mainly use it at school (irregularly)
Desktop - Watching movies, school work
N4 - Phone, SMS, Music, e-mail, (news)
N10 - Browsing, games, personal assistant (calendar, google now, ...), news, e-mail, YouTube, Gallery
The N10 took over most of the work I used to do on my N4. Which means that I enjoy a 10" screen more often than the 4", and that my phone now has almost no other android apps apart from the ones listed above.
My Nexus 10 replaces a laptop during class since it's a lot lighter. I still prefer my laptop for gaming/normal use since my school is lame and doesn't have wifi in the dorms. :/

I have a Desktop running Windows 8 since I find a tablet is great for taking out and about but around the house, something with a bit more power is needed. Seriously considering getting a Series 5 Chromebook since they're dirt cheap and would bridge the gap between desktop and tablet.
Nexus is my note taker/Web surfing during class
Macbook stays at home and is used for photo editing and most papers and projects.
Too lazy to carry my macbook around :silly:

Would I like my prime better....

I have had this prime since they first came out. I never bought the matching keyboard. I'm wondering if I would like the prime better if I had the keyboard dock? I find myself reverting to my junk laptop a lot of the time (windows vista home premium) mostly for web browsing. I don't think it's screen size (15 vs 10?). I like using a physical keyboard at times. I can use my finger as a mouse but the physical keyboard seems to be what drives me to the laptop.
Those of you that have the keyboard what do you think?

Got my keyboard for Christmas. It totally "transforms" the experience. USB port, full size SD card slot and an extra battery. How can you go wrong? Typing this reply on it now. Totally worth it. I can't remember the last time I charged just my tablet. People always ask if I like my "netbook" and thats when I pop the tablet off the dock and it amazes them.
BTW the TF701 keyboard and the Prime are compatible.

Should I get the TF700 or the TF200 dock? I'm trying to find the differences on google right now.
The TF201 has a slightly bigger battery. There is a small balance issue with the 201's dock meaning the tablet can fall over when docked. I don't think it's a big deal. Mine has never fallen over. The 701's dock is said to have fixed that problem. I don't know, I've only messed with a friends 701 with the dock and didn't try to test that.
Well I would have dumped the whole tablet to trash can if it had no keyboard dock. The keyboard is really good and it is pleasure to write with.
I'm a little confused on the keyboard dock. I see the TF200 and TF700 dock but not finding TF701 docks for sale. Am I missing something? It looks like the TF701 was just unveiled this month?
Think I might buy a referb TF700 dock from Best Buy. It has a really good price on it.
Sorry, the Infinity Pad is a TF700. For some reason I've always call it a TF701.
The Prime is a TF201
Using my Prime without keyboard too. I think it will not replace computer anyway. I'm ok with its battery life and never needed USB or SD slot before.
I dont own a dock, but i got to use one on a TF101, I personally dont like the size of the keyboard (or using the trackpad)
so what i did was i ordered a transformer USB adapter off amazon for 10$, a hub for another 10$, and i connected everything up (mouse, keyboard, mem. card reader, etc [it was a 8 port hub)
just note that the adapter was meant for ALL transformer tablets, so it might be a little wiggly, which can be solved by making a cast out of hot plastic (the kind used in 3d printers)
Just an update.
I did go with a transformer dock. A TF700 dock. So far I like it. Only problem I have so far is integration with touch screen and non touchscreen control. Some thins I have to still use my finger (like scrolling a page). Tried using Facebook and it was annoying ( I could be using something wrong). I am still getting used to it but overall I have to say I really do like it better with the dock. Some games/apps change rotation when I need to use a chat function in them (annoying). I will continue to work with and get used to it's functions. The shortcuts on the keyboard are nice at times.

Put you dock into gesture mode (asus customised settings) and then use 2 fingers on the touch pad to scroll

The dock shines when using in conjunction with remote desktop to a decent computer. I run windows 8 on my desktop and using splashtop remote (which makes for a nearly lag free and pretty remote desktop experience) it feels like the transformer prime is running an i5 with ssd and 4gig ram. If you are on local network, it's even possible to stream youtube and video and stuff without any lag, just a very slight delay in sound/image.
So I have a desktop computer which is always on. When I need a tablet I just use the tablet. When I need a laptop I put it in the dock and remote into my desktop and I have a full desktop.
It's even better with a small travel mouse connected to the usb of the dock.
Very versatile this thing, just a shame of the memory and the lag when using it as a tablet.
And of course, when I want a desktop with full size keyboard and no lag big screen gaming ... I just go to my desktop and start where I left of on my tablet. It's great!
