[Q] Kernels??? and cyanogenmod - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have a few questions now I am running cm7. And I can't find the answers propably because (you're a NOOOB!!!) I lack some basic understanding of the relation between kernels, mods, modems etc.
First the situation: SGS2 (duh) rooted using CF-Root OXA KG3. Flashed CM7 nightly (88 or 89 don't know from the top of my head).
My understanding of the parts is limited to the rom (cm7) is running on top of the kernel. Where the modem fits in I don't know.
Now the questions:
1. Does cm7 have (and am I running) it's own kernel or am I still on CF-Root?
2. If I want to switch to another kernel how would I do it and where can I find kernels working well with cm7? (I know about Swi7chblades thread)
3. Where is the modem for and can I change and improve it? (sorry couldn't find it in the guides nor the glossary on the wiki)
And I thought I had more but will say what pops up when I read your answers.

I think CM7 has a own kernel but i'm not sure
SiyahKernel v2.0 will work for you if you are still running CM7

Yeah I am still running CM7 and plan to stay there until their is either an ICS version or another ICS rom. Thanks for the kernel suggestion will check it out.
edit: SiyahKernel v2.0 looks promising, I'll put it on the list of things to try.

I tried siyah 2.0 stable but it wasn't a success. I ended up going back to stock and flashing cm7 again. On the modem front I flashed to KI4 and things seem a little better. But I still don't really know what to look for. Anyone?

CM7 has the kernel from cyanogen dev codeworkz. I'm using siyah ATM though which is decently stable.

[Q]another new fascinate owner

ok so i've went through the threads here and pretty much got a handle on what's what but some are little outdated. though since i'm new, i've already applied the ED01 froyo OTA update from stock as soon as i opened it up and a lot of the stuff here are applied to older firmwares. so first things first, i tried to root using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790004 using the fascinateRootv02 but no go. i hear you can use superoneclick but looking at the superonelick thread, samsung fascinate is not supported? so if someone can point me to the right direction, i would appreciate it.
so with that said, i know there are a lot of roms available. i want to just stick to one that works well and avoid much as possible in keep changing roms. so what is the most popular roms out of the bunch?
thanks!

You are correct. You can just odin a CWR of your choice and then flash a ROM with the Super User package already in place and kaboom rooted
Superonelick (version...let me look here.....ugh... version 1.8) is fascinate compatible and I myself have used it before.
cheers.
** Edit **
To answer you question OP, the most popular ROM is Ultimatekangbang (Community ROM v1.x), Evil Fascination, and CyanogenMod 7 (Koas or CM7 by JT **Gingerbread**)
Quick break down
Kangbang (Comm)
-Community developed and updated frequently
-Most popular
-Comes with an overclockable/undervoltable kernel (up to 1.6ghz)
Evil Fascination
-2nd only to Kangbang
-Great ROM very clean
-No kernel (since I last checked could be wrong)
- Just use one of the PBJ kernels that are under volted for better battery life
-beta testing the LG android launcher
CM7
-Gingerbread (2.3)
-Camera, MMS, and BT do not function until a 2.3 official leak is obtained
-Smooth and completely open source
-heavily customizable
I use Kangbang 1.3 with the 100uv PBJ kernel and I see no crashes or force closing issues alongside 25 to 30 hours of battery life under normal use.

thanks for the info! hmm so you don't have to root to use odin? cool, i'll try this.
would voodoo work with kangbang? just saying because it seems like voodoo is the most popular kernel here. how different is 100uv PBJ then with voodoo? is there a there a one stop shop thread on info of which kernel does what?

odin a pre rooted rom... found here

again i say welcome and enjoy ur amazing new phone.. i prefeer community rom

[Q] A little help! please.

Hi All,
My first post here. Yay!!
I have SGS2 and wanted to have latest and greatest. Spend few days reading this forum and got reasonable understanding of root, kernel, rom and firmware. I've even update my phone from XWKDD to XXKI3 non-wipe Frankenstein version and updated kernel to stock XXKI3 as well. I also then updated rom to VillianROM 3.0 which is very new and has 2.3.5 in it.
All working great and haven't bricked the phone.
However, I am bit confused and was hoping you guys could clear up my confussion.
Basically what I want to know is, does ROM include Kernel?
If so, did I updated my kernel when I flashed VillainROM?
If someone could explain what has happened when I did below.
1. Flashed XWKDD insecure kernel and rooted the phone using superoneclick.
2. Few days later, flashed XXKI3 non-wipe firmware (pda, modem & csc all in one).
3. Flashed XWKDD insecure kernel and rooted phone using superoneclick.
4. Flashed kernel to stock XXKI3 to remove yellow triangle, phone is still rooted.
5. Flashed VillainROM 3.0
Hope I've asked questions correctly, if not forgive me, its only my first post here.
Every rom uses different kernels, now your phone is using the kernel that comes with Villain rom. If you are not happy with the kernel that you are using now you can download one from forums then change it by flashing it using cwm.

So, in my phone I no longer have KI3 stock kernel but instead "inphetamine2.0.5" kernel which is used in Villainrom 3.
will lookup bit more on this kernel to understand what it has to offer.
thanks for information.

Villain 3 is your rom and Ninpethamine 2.0.5 is your rom. I would suggest that you change your kernel to newer version to Ninphetamine 2.1.3 . Go to kernel forums in xda and read some more and you can get more info about all other kernels and you will find performances of each kernels.

I updated kernel as per your suggestion to Ninphetamine 2.1.3, all appears to be ok and didn't find any difference. Well, I am not that techie and my requirements are mostly basic so won't notice much difference but I am sure it is better then previous version.
Thanks for your help.
Theh were using 2.0.5 with VR rom and according to them its more stable and battery friendly. You can monitor it and if you find it better or 2.0.5 better you can always flash it back.

Basically the ROM developper chooses the kernel that he finds more suitable to his ROM and loadsit with the ROM. You can change the kernel if you want after flashing the ROM. For me, I like the cf root KI3 v4.2 kernel (stock kernel), but if you want to overclock or undervolt you'll need a custom kernel (don't know if nimphetamine can UC/UV, I think it can, if not there are other great options too).
The thing I found with the cf root kernel is that for users that don't know how to undervolt or do most advanced stuff (me included) it has better battery life. Or at least for me the cf root kernel showed the best battery life. At the end, the best is to try various kernels and see which is best for you.

[MOD][UPDATE] XXLPH/XXLPJ/XXLPQ I777 Kernels - Stock and Siyah+My UPDATE MIUI Kernel

I didn't want to have this get lost in my other threads so I decided to make a new one.
These kernel's have the necessary in-call patch to work for our phones. I have attached a flashable zip so you can flash the I9100 ROM (Only for LPH based ROMs) of your choice and then flash this kernel.

Steps
1. Do usual wipes
2. Flash a I9100 ROM that is LPH based (pretty sure it is only Sammy based ROM's right now)
3. Flash my kernel.
4. Flash a Modem from our I777 collection.
4. Reboot.
LPQ ROM's verified working on with LPQ kernel
1. CriskeloServanTeam V05
Sammy ROM's verified working on with stock kernel (Thanks cjsabaki)
1. Wanam lite ics rom (has a phone apk with no noise suppression)
2. ICS resurection (It is flawless, has everything working, including: camera, video, usb, external_sd)
AOSP ROM's verified working on with Siyah kernel (Thanks cjsabaki)
1. MIUI v4
2. CM9
3. AOKP Hydro1.5 ROM
4. Bezke's AOKP build
This does not fix the in-call Noise Suppression issue, that is a modification to Phone.apk so be forewarned
Click "Thanks" if you like what you see or donate with my link.
See Entropy's thread/links here that showed me the way to getting the kernel to work on our phone:

Ok thanks, I'm staying on AOKP for now
gonna try this out
I'm gonna try this out but want to make sure I flash the correct modem. Where do I get the KJ4 modem that will work for LPH releases? I've found the Modem post in the original development section and the CM9 modems that task650 posted in the CM9 i777 post. I'd appreciate anybody's proper guidance.
I tried Siyah's ICS 3.0alpha3 for just testing fun last night (knowing calls won't work - just playing), and it had a much smoother scrolling/UI screen feel to it. Would it be possible for you (ktoonsez) to combine / share your collected mods on getting the ICS kernel to work on our i777 phones with gokhanmoral, so he could offer up a Siyah version for our phones? Just wondering... thanks... appreciate all you do for us man!

Take your preferred modem from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361393
Then follow op instructions. Basically, Wipe data, flash ICS LPH rom of your choice, flash gapps, flash this kernel, flash your modem, reboot
FYI, I flashed Westcrip's rom earlier this morning using the above mentioned flashing process without issue. I actually prefer Bezke's AOKP look and feel so I went back

Yes I can hack his kernel so it will work with ours. Looks like he is on alpha 4 now. Does anyone know how to contact him, probably should contact him before doing it?
EDIT:
Whihk ROM or ROM's did you use it on?
Also be aware, since there are no sources yet (direct quote from his site):
Warning: this is not a compiled kernel but only a repack of cfroot kernel. only initramfs part is modified until the sources are out.

Thanks that would be cool if you two could collaborate. I am currently on latest AOKP rom. Alpha 4 (whatever is most current) would be the one to integrate. I am happy to test before you release - just pm me the details. Thanks!

Tried Resurrection and Wanam as well as Cm9 and aokp. I liked the cm9 and akop but no adobe flash support. That's a must for me.
I'm back to Wanam now, it seemed more stable than Resurrection. It's been fun playing with these. Thanks to you guys that have made this possible.
I'll see how this does on battery over the long run now.

Just want to say thanks for developing and sharing this. I've been experimenting with a few different roms today thanks to this kernel. Thanks again.

What to look for in a kernal

Hey guys, I'm not gonna ask the dreaded question "Which Kernal is best?", but I am currently rooted and want to overclock to 1.5, but besides that, what else should I be looking for in a kernal?
What about modems (or is that embedded in the kernal)?
We only have 2 options, Entropy or Siyah and they do not include a modem.
Check the dev section for kernels & modems.

Both kernels we have offer oc abilities.
Personally I would look at stability and battery life but that is just me. Try both and see which suits your needs.
Modems are not associated with kernel and depend on your area. Whichever works the best where you are.
We have two choices here and both are incredibly stable and allow overclocking. You can't go wrong. Basically the biggest difference as far as I can see is the recovery that comes with it which is almost entirely preference.

So if I find a ROM I like but want to experiment with the other available Kernal, is it as simple as flashing my ROM first, then once booted up go into Odin and flash the other kernal i want to experiment with?
Or is the kernal that comes with a ROM the one your stuck with?

Just use CWM to flash the zips provided or Mobile Odin if you prefer it that way.
No need to use a computer to change the Kernel.

Thanks for the quick response chris,
I guess what I'm asking is if I have a rom with the Syiah kernal, is it possible to keep that same ROM but swap kernals, sorry, I just wasn't clear on what your answer meant.
I'm guessing your saying it is indeed possible and just flash the .zip for a different Kernal on top of an already installed ROM.
Sorry, I'm tired...
Changing the Kernel on 2.3.4 & 2.3.6 roms will not break anything.
For CM7, CM9, MIUI etc you have to stick with what is included or see what works with it.

For example, latest Siyah with touch recovery. Awesome for flashaholics.
Your talking of version .14 I assume, if so, doesn't it say in .13 description that .13 would be the last for Gingerbread?
Obviously it works if your using it, so i'm gonna download now...

[Q] Kernel for PowerWashed GB?

Hey guys, finally gathered the balls to flash my Fascinate a custom ROM today. After a long while of deciding what to go with, i found PowerWashed GB and flashed it with Odin and to my relief it worked and i went on and installed the permission package for it and my APN for Cricket.
Anyways!
I'm looking for a working kernel for my ROM (PowerWashed GB), I've checked out Leankernel but there's a few bugs in it. Can anyone recommend me a good stable ROM that works on PWGB?
Or possibly even better, a good reliable ROM that i can simply flash from where in at now? Please don't recommend Cyanogenmod, unless i can get a detailed guide because when i tried to flash it i got an error and it messed up my display and my keyboard got stuck open, and it was just hell so i re-flashed PWGB and was back to good.
