I am a little overwelmed which how much stuff you can hack up or modify with this compared to my Compaq iPaq I had about 9-10 years ago. I could really use some help with a few questions. My 1st post here, and i am going to try not to be a newbie, i do a lot of developing with FoFiX, and XBMC skins, and know what it's like to get newb's asking questions already answered. But i have searched and read for 9 hours straight now and just confused still about a few things. If anyone doesn't mind answering these and just had some time, I would really appreaciate the help.
I already messed around with trying out the other home alternative, and iPhone clone, and after playing around since with the manila/TouchFlo, so far it's the best one out with being skinable and also is smoothest and nicest looking, with easiest finger touch control. So i am now wanting to learn as much as i can. I'm by far no stranger to MOD'ing stuff , so i mostly understand the dAnGeR's and terminology. I am already going to start converting an XBMC skin i co-develop ('Back-Row') for ever one to use. I do a good bot of all the graphics for it, and doing all the work to update it for 1900x1080 realms.
1) Currently i am using Manila2D_1.00_1819.2926 for now, and still can't quite figure out about the differences of using either 'kitchen' or 'Loaded' manilla ROM files. I am gathering from reading that this allows you to replace your current rom with another ROM that already has manilla inside/cooked so you are running it directly, as part of the overall OS, thus saving internal memory, allowing certain problems from happening. Like it here and there switches programs (opera) back to the touchflo screen, as well as it prompting "Tap here to start Touchflo" and having to do this every here and there.
2) The touchflo 3d isn't available yet, and possible/definitely wouldn't run on a HTC Mogul (64megs internal, 1?? storage), 4 gig stick memory card (got an 8 gig stick on the way from Amazon-$14.99) or maybe??? Cube seems to work ok so far, alongside with Manila2D_1.00_1819.2926. I read about install problems and such with Manila if cube was installed, it's working fine for me.
3) When i make a contact memory, i notice it doesn't seem to hold the memory setting. As when i go back, they are all blank again "+"), is there possibly a file that needs a reg switch or is this just a bug? My favorite program links I set stay just fine though.
Again, thanks for any help on this guys. I am still reading and searching, and will keep an eye on this thread in case someone will hopefully answer this. And thanks again in advance.
Here's the deal. HTC Titan has only 64 Megs of RAM, ~25-27 of which are usable at bootup. This means a beautiful app such as M2D takes up its fair share of memory and CPU, causing intensive programs such as Opera Mobile to crash now and then.
If you want to make that sacrifice for a pretty, flowing interface, you will not be alone. Scrosler makes an excellent ROM [variant of DCD's 3.2.6] which I've found - over the course of a few weeks - very stable.
Again with the cube interface.. it's just pretty graphics and will eat up alot of precious memory once you get some intensive programs running. If you just want your phone to be impressive and fun - cool, go for it.
With respect to the contacts vanishing, that is a problem with the way your Windows Live is set up. To resolve it I think you must force the server to -not- attempt to sync your contacts. Also, use dotFred's PIM Backup [found in development & hacking] and you will be able to save your contacts, messages, tasks, etc. on a single backup file.
If you are going to get into flashing various ROMs, I suggest picking up UC Autorun. Had I used it from the start, I would have sliced off several days of reconfiguring.
I've read this numerous times. I consistently see people write that if one runs M2D, especially on scrosler's ROM, that one sacrifices memory and that's why opera and things have problems.
I disagree. Because the ROM already has so much free RAM, I have more memory running M2D on this ROM than I did running a stock ROM.
The R4R ROM, if one installs the HTC Task Manager, has EnableAutokill enabled by default. This is what's killing your apps when you start running low on memory. I recommend disabling it. There are instructions if you keep reading that thread. Or you can download my updates to this ROM, which are also linked to in the R4R thread. Maybe a couple more hours of reading and you'll get through the whole thread.

I really appreciate the opinions and such for responses. That's helpfull to me. Today i removed the cube program, since i store the cab file on my 8 gig storage stick in case i want to dump it on, but also since a fair bit of what it does i can still also do with M2D anyway. Although yes it's cool looking, the main purpose can be done with M2d, and for the most part i now have "Free:18.70MB" of free available space from "Free: 10.24MB", almost doubled the amount of free memory space. As well as freeing up the space from "In Use:42MB" down to now being "In Use:34MB". So at least now programs aren't crashing.
Now things are working fine. I still need to mess with the contacts not saving, but program links are fine. Trying to understand about the mentioned how to possibly fix this with Windows Live and syncing. And also why touchflo still throws the 'Tap to load Touchflo' problem. Would flashing with this said 'Kitchen' ROM or the extra one include touchflo so it's always kind of running? This is the last 2 questions for me to work out, everything else i got going and understand already.
My gtab running vegan 5.1.1 keeps on locking up for some reason and I have to hold the power button to restart it. Any idea what could be causing this and how I could fix it? I can't have this happen as I'm starting to use my tablet more and more for work and school. Would flashing a different kernel help?
If you had installed your own applications it may have been a memory leak (faulty application) or too many applications open at once. When Vegan goes into those kinds of error situations it seems to reboot.
Also I've seen simply playing video causing a reboot as well. Probably another problem with limited memory.
is there any app I could use that would help me to see where a possible memory leak is occurring? I'm not sure how i could track this down

I'm sorry - not to offend you - are you SERIOUSLY using this for work & school? You must be joking right?
This thing has no & ZERO security - I repeat it has ZERO SECURITY.
My intentional use with this Gtablet (even my very stable with TnT Lite 4.24/VTL launcher/Gtablet Stock HomeDashBoard with weather/news) to read my PDF books, watching Youtubes, free kid-games, watch some video files and play some java games off & online. I even have my own dummy gmail/google account configure on here....thus if someone got into my Gtablet or some faulty app sneaking around - they won't get nothing at all
PLEASE - don't put your personal/life on this tablet - No tablet ever is secured (iphone, ipad, android) - they crack to your tablet any minutes!

Really??? If this is what you think, you should take your aluminum foil hat off and get real. Do a little bit of research before posting something like this.
Haha its not like I'm doing work for NASA. If someone steals my tablet, them reading my economics and finance papers for school is not really a huge concern.

well - just my opinion - don't believe me - is your Iphone/Ipad secured once it got stolen - think twice http://www.iphon4all.com/2011/02/11/iphone-passwords-cracked-in-6-minutes/
Android tablet/phone: http://www.geekosystem.com/android-malware/ - could have been little bit too late once Google pulled the app from the market and 50K-200K phone/tablet already affected? Remember - this Android and other means are open source - that means the encryption pki is opened-source too - it will take minutes or hours the encryption got decrypted
Just precautionary thought - up to you to use your own device and risk your own in the open world - Myself - I AIN'T TRUSTING any iphone/ipad android tablet
Speaking of Windows 7 bitlocker 256bit encryption to disk - it will take years to decrypt that encrypted hard drive - Windows 7 is yet taking off to tablet or phone - maybe in future with Windows 8 - but I give Microsoft a plus to how they secure/help people using their OS..
Happy flashing Gtablet
Hello,
I'm new to Android and a new Viewsonic user.
Anyways, I'm having an issue getting my g tab to work how I'd like to with a specific application.
The application... viewing PDF's. I can view PDF's fine, the issue is with scrolling while viewing PDF's. I'm not sure if the culprit is the software (adobe reader) or the speed of the machine itself.
To eliminate the latter I'd like to send a file to anyone using Calkulin (from what I've read this is the highest performing in terms of speed).
What I am seeing with the current version of tap n tap/adobe is that only the viewable area is loaded, if you scroll 1-2 pages you have a blank page and have to wait 1.5sec for that image to load. My hope was that it'd be more fluid.
With my desktop at work (which is nothing stellar) I'm used to seeing, while scrolling fast, around 75% of the image is viewable instantly and around 2 secs later the entire image is displayed.
My g tab isn't working the same way. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a great product, but for my application it isn't working as I had anticipated. The ability for me to "preview" 75% while scrolling is a must for me. Without it I'm kind of navigating blindly.
If anyone has insight, suggestions, or willing to help me experiment I'd appreciate it greatly.
The ability to view PDF's on the go is my primary reason for purchasing. I'm a service tech, I hoped for this to be a library of parts/service manuals I could navigate easily.
Thanks,
Jim
sure pm me with your details and I would be glad to help you out
I am using Calkulins G-Tab 1.1 ROM and Pershoots 2.6.32.39 Kernel and can't thank them enough for the great work that they have done. I have downloaded several PDF files and viewed with Adobe Reader. I was able to scroll through a 12 page document in what I would say is a quick pace. If you scroll to fast you get a blank page while it catches up. Takes less than a second for it to catch up but that is depedent on fast you are scrolling. For me I think it is quite acceptable. I have been very impressed with this ROM and Kernel and would highly recommend. It has been very fast and stable. I am getting Quadrant scores around 3500 and Smartbench scores around 4200.

I'm getting similar to what you are describing... load times are probably longer on my end. The issue is the docs I am viewing can easily go up to 200 pages and with them being completely blank when i scroll to them, it slows me down big time.
If there was some point of reference that was visible instantly I'd be happy, but being that I don't know the manuals well enough to say what comes after the next page and you times that by 200 it becomes tedious.
After reading your post I think my issue is more rooted in adobe than in the speed of the tablet.
Personally, I like to use the e-book reader "aldiko" to read PDF's. I like scrolling control plus I like the brightness control (slide your finger up and down the left side). To annotate PDFs, I like to use Repligo reader.
Just comparing the PDF documents I have in front of me, I would say adobe is the slowest and aldiko and Repligo are the quickest for scrolling.
Thanks Poy, I'll have to try those.
just a quick question... am I wrong in thinking it is more of a software issue than a hardware issue? I know ram is lower than what i have on my desktop... could that be causing my issue?
when I first picked up the gtab, i thought 512K memory was going to be an issue in general but after I downloaded a system monitor, it seems like it is not a big deal. Two related thoughts: the android apps seem to be fairly lightweight (versus PC apps), and if the OS does swapping, the "disk" behind the scenes is flash-based so it should be quick.
If you are at all technically competent, I say "jump into the ROM pool" and try everything out yourself. If you can follow instructions, you shouldn't have any troubles. It has been a fun couple of months.
I got it working, thanks to all the help.
I tried a variety of PDF readers, I ended up going with repligo. For whatever reason I couldn't get aldiko to work.
That and I installed calkukin.
Works good.
My only complaint is with repligo... if I view landscape it shifts the image so 3/4 of the image is outside of the viewing area. To alleviate this I'll just switch to portrait or zoom out.
Thanks again.
I am currently on my 2nd Prime. The first was returned after 4 days. This one is as close to 100% as I can imagine.
Anyway, I had grand visions of all sorts of things I could use it for; however, they haven't really come true.
I also own an Asus Netbook (slow, but at least 3 times the computer that the Prime is), and a Dell laptop running both Win 7 & Simply Mepis Linux. I also have a very good desktop box (which I triple or quad boot).
I do not have the docking station for the Prime.
I desired to use it to view Instrument Approach Plates (Aviation Stuff). They are downloadable as a very large PDF file (598 pages for Alaska) which does not have a linked index (not the fault of the Prime). As you may guess, scrolling to the "Y's" is very slow.
Without purchasing an external Bluetooth GPS, it cannot be used with a moving map--even is one can be found.
I have found it very difficult and cumbersome to move files between the Prime and any of the other computers.
I have attempted to use the bundled browser (POS, in my opinion), and Firefox for Android (FF is my preferred browser on the computers) and found it lacking on the tablet. I have finally settled on Opera Mobile--Not great, but at least useable. (It doesn't even have a HOME key/button, for goodness sakes.)
I attempted to transfer files via Bluetooth from my laptop (yes, they can see each other), but gave up in frustration.
So, without seeming to be whining, what do other owners use the Prime to do?

I do video and music editing on the laptop still and if I am really getting down and dirty on writing emails or documents, I would switch to the laptop and use Word 2010. Other than that, I can't see myself using the laptop for anything and prefer the Prime as it also lasts 12 hours on the tablet alone and I have not done a full test on how long it lasts with the dock.
Just have to know what it can and cannot do and work with it. You sound like you need something a little more robust than a tablet. I wouldn't dare to think of doing any kind of video editing on the Prime or even music.

I think if you want to figure out whether or not a tablet is for you, it's best to consider exactly what makes a tablet different from a notebook. It's those differences that make the tablet much worse for some things, but much better for others.
They are:
1. Instant-on: tablets can be turned on and off instantly. That means they can be used for quick tasks like checking email where booting/waking a notebook is simply less convenient and/or less efficient.
2. Standby battery life: can sit there for days unused, which along with #1 makes them great for doing ad hoc stuff where often a notebook will often be out of power and need plugging in.
Note: Ultrabooks and Macbook Airs mitigate some of the advantages here, but I think even with those wake and standby times are still tablet strengths.
3. Form facter: tablets can be used in more settings and positions than notebooks. For example, lying on a couch or in bed, standing in line, etc.
4. Mobile OS: touch-based, relatively simple interface makes casual tasks easier and more pleasant. Modern tablet OSs provide a more natural interface for many things, getting rid of mice and trackpads for direct manipulation of on-screen elements.
These things combine to make tablets great for things that don't require a great deal of content creation (the Prime's keyboard dock changes that equation a bit when you're talking about raw data entry). No, they can't beat notebooks for heavy duty tasks, but then again that's not their strength: they're best for all the non-heavy-duty tasks we use computers for. If you stop and think about how you use a computer, I think you can probably come up with a good list of such tasks.
A tablet won't replace a notebook for many people, but it makes a great adjunct device. Even here at the office where I have a decent notebook (HP Envy 14), I still use my tablet for some things because it's more comfortable, efficient, and/or just more fun.

To help transfer files use Dropbox. It has clients for Windows and Linux and mac and Android so very easy to move stuff around. Between that and having a freeNAS box that I can easily browse with es file explorer I have no troubles with it.
I personally use it mostly for Web browsing and forum posting. I also ssh into my university Linux system often to work on labs and whatnot. I do watch some video on it when bored and it's my primary email device.
Do you own another Android device with a GPS? Bluetooth2GPS is free and works fine between my Prime and Nexus.. solved my only 'slight' issue with the device
I run in performance at 1.5 with vc and I'm mainly in Browser -much easier to use with touch than on my notebook (Toshiba 16" i7) ive actually forgotten and touched the screen on that by accident!! just my preference I guess seems just as fast as Chrome on there. Facebook, Netflix, GTalk and Gmail ...also makes my notebook pretty much just for games now. Transferring files I simply hook up over USB and drag and drop... ASTRO or the native Asus file manager that came with it to mess with them once they are loaded.

Even better, add in Dropsync, to sync files locally. I do that so I have my important files synced but available when I'm offline.
Hi, guys!
Please don't lynch me for being a noob, I have used search button and I have looked in the threads the forum offered when I wrote in the title, and still found nothing that'll help me.
I recently bought a generic media streamer from DX.com (SKU 112201).
It's compact, light and runs Android 2.2 on a 1GHz CPU, 256MB RAM and 2GB flash memory (though if I looked in the right place there are only about 200MB of storage space).
The little box is not only full of magic but also many chinese apps (some of which open up the same interface) that I have no use for, not to mention the whole OS is chinese/engrish with errors popping up every minute.
The streamer runs slow and often hangs and I can't for some reason find certain apps in the Play Store when they're on the top of the list on other devices (probably chinese censorship or something).
I can easily find a guide to reinstalling firmware on my htc sensation xe, but I got nothing on this device.
My question to you is: does anyone know how to install a clean-no-third-party-apps Android 2.2 on a streamer or knows where I can get the guide?
Also, do you think I should even bother getting this thing working at its optimal capacity given its specs?
Thanks in advance and again sorry for my noob!
Ok, nevermind rewriting the thing, I figured out it's just a weak mainboard that looks like it was taken from a phone and (poorly) molded into a Media Player interface. The programs that bug me I can remove or disable, all I have to do is find a proper TV app that would work on this hunk-a-junk.
I still have an issue though - the device is supposed to have a 2GB internal storage memory and indeed it says "2GB" under "FLASH Memory" in the storage settings, but I have absolutely no access to it?
Can anyone please help me with this?
