I am wondering what the magic trick is to tethering?? I have tried literally every wireless/wired tether app out there and nothing is consistent. To get it to connect to my desktop wirelessly, I have to enable it, then connect on my desktop, then disable it, disconnect on my desktop, then enable and connect again. This is every single time. Web pages load about the same as my ATT dsl, downloads are a LITTLE faster, and other third-party programs (Skype, Halo 2, etc.) magically stop for no reason at random times, all this while my phone is just sitting on my desk next to my desktop and I haven't touched a thing, not to mention I do frequent speed tests right after these programs quit and I am still getting 11mbps-16mbps down......WAYYYYY faster than my horrible ATT dsl, which tops out at about 5.10mbps down.
I really really really want to dump my DSL and just tether from my phone to save $20/mo, but this is incredibly frustrating......wondering what the magic trick is to get it to work more solidly?
BTW, my Thunderbolt is running LiquidSmooth AOSP 3.0 ROM and my desktop is a Dell XPS 8100, Intel i7 processor with 2.8Ghz and 8gb of RAM, if that helps.

I don't know why you are trying to "connect to my desktop wirelessly"... Does your desktop have a wireless network card ? If not, you have to use USB tethering to provide 'net access to the desktop from your phone's data connection.

Yup, brand new Asus Wireless-N USB Adapter.
I don't know about wireless, but I use wired tethering via PDAnet. its very stable and I don't have any problems with it except one. occassionally, after a few hours(or if I use 1GB+ of data), it will then get really slow. ill have to temporarily turn off the phone's radio & then back on and everything returns to normal.
I do however feel it is an issue with the Thunderbolt as I have done the same thing with a Bionic and the Bionic never has the issue.
I use Wifi Tether v3.1-beta6. All I had to do to get it to connect was go under settings and be sure routing fix is checked. Connects to my laptop instantly and I get full 4g speeds.

No "trick" needed. Pay Verizon for tethering, and use the app they provide. Works just fine, no hassles.

Totally uncalled for. Troll elsewhere Mike. According to Block C provisions Verizon is required to allow us unlimited LTE data AND access to all apps *Even ones that allow tethering* They're trying to dodge a bullet claiming "Network Management" as the reasoning behind data caps and tether blocking.
Now as per the OP- I use default USB tethering built into CM7 and have had decent connection speeds / pings on 3g and 4g and I can watch Netflix / play Rift / connect to Vent / whatever without random disconnects. I'd go ahead and assume your wifi card on the computer just isn't playing nice with the wifi tethering and try a USB option before ripping your hair out in frustration.

First, you're wrong. You've stated something as fact which has not been decided. If you believe your interpretaton of the Block C restrictions is correct, get the FCC to do something about it, or successfully sue Verizon. Until you do that, tethering without paying for the feature is a violation of the contract you agreed to when you signed up for service.
Also, the rules put in place say nothing about providing such service at no cost. Verizon does not prohibit tethering, they just charge you for it. They allow unlimited usage, they just charge for it. Where's the violation?
Now stop ripping off legitimate tethering users (by stealing bandwidth which should be available to them) and VZW. Your rationalization of theft simply shows that you are a reprobate.
So back on topic of the op, i had some issues with the 605.5 base roms, but not older 605.0 and 605.3 based. I checked for the tetherguard.apk and haven't see it in any of the roms i've been trying. If you're using a sense based and having issues, try an older base rom, worked for me.

What rom are you using and having success with? I'm currently on BAMF Forever 1.0.9 and at times its fine and other times my speed tests show 12-13mbps on my desktop I'm tethering too, yet many simple web pages won't load.
And what is Tetherguard?
I'm running a 605.5 based Rom and can tether no problem and full 4g speeds. I use wifi tether 3.1 beta6. Change device profile to thunderbolt and make sure routing fix is checked in settings.

i'm running killasense 3.2 (thanks orkilla! great rom) and everything works very very well.
under setup-method, i manually selected soft-ap. most phones need an access point-style connection, iphones and ipads can do ad-hoc but not any other phones, and my laptop had problems with ad-hoc on occasion.
* radios should be 0906 or newer. mine are super stable... both 3g, 4g and wifi!
* wifi tether 3.0 beta 6
* device-progile -> thunderbolt
* setup-method -> softap
check the following
* wifi driver reload
* mms clamping
* routing fix
then... UNCHECK disable wake lock
bam, should be good. also, delete the wireless network from your computer. network sharing -> wireless networks -> find and remove. then reconnect, should be good to goooo

I know this is a dumb question, but can someone please tell me how I achieve tethering. I know it is set up to work on this rom but I don't know how to make it actually happen!
Thanks so much
Edit: I have the 'free tether' option selected in wireless settings
You could just download the "Wireless Tether" from Google Code. It works perfectly even on the Atrix as long as you're rooted. Should work on all the GingerBlur/Adeo mods too.
Which version do you use?
Also, does this need to use wifi, I'm trying to tether with just data connex

think about this for a minute. if you have wifi, why would you need tether?
of course tethering works on data only, it uses your wifi ON THE PHONE to create its own wifi network
you dont have to download any app, just open Settings, Wireless and Networks, MOBILE HOTSPOT, and turn it on.....
well thanks pirateghost...for the somewhat sarcastic reply. lol .
yes, sure that does make sense, duh! ...i guess it hadn't occured to me bc i assumed tethering was done thru a usb cable as i had done on WM before. something was wrong with my settings to make the wifi hotspot connect. i had to open the apn and save it (without making changes to it). this allowed it to connect and now have it working thru the hotspot.

Haha nice catch I didnt notice that. Let me power up my delorean and get 6.5 for all us. I think that is the last version before Motorola unlocked the bootloader. Wireless tether is what is recommended since there are many guides for it and works with all operating systems whereas usb would not. You could try pdanet which I paid for but not on my current device. That supports both however $30 might be more than you are willing to pay for usb support
I flashed Scott's Cleanrom ICS 4.2 and followed his instructions for the wireless tether.
When I go through all of that shouldn't I be able to go online with my laptop through the wireless tether on the phone? When I go into the available wifi networks my phone doesn't show up on the list.
Am I not understanding how this works?
Thanks-Dan
C'Mon guys, help a brotha out. 175+ views and no replies?
Thanks-Dan
Well, the answer is.... yes, probably. I'm not running that ROM at the moment, but ICS gave us the ability to tether in infrastructure mode, rather than merely ad hoc.
Having said that, there are variables out there that may be causing the issues you are having. I'm sure you have double-checked the settings and have set up wireless tether per Scott's instructions. So, here are your options (IMHO):
1) Try to find another tether app (such as Barnacle) to see if that might work.
2) Try to find an updated or different version of WiFi Tether.
3) Try the many different settings in WiFi Tether to see if they work for you.
4) Try a different ICS ROM to see if it works for you. (RezROM ICS does work for me)
5) Pay for Verizon's Hot Spot.
Good luck!
Thanks for the reply. I will triple-check all the settings again and go from there.

Next click on wifiteather.
Next click on wifi_teather_v3_0-pre14.apk
Close to the bottom of the page will be a Download Here link click on it.
If your using a PC place it on the root of the sd card if your using your phone make sure unknown sources is checked in the settings>applications menu.
Next go to the market and download and install apk installer.
Open apk installer on your phone and click on <ext_sd>
Next click on wifi_teather_v3_0-pre14.apk and click install.
After it installs click open and go to the menu sceen.
Go to settings and check Routing fix.
Next click on the access control and press on enable.
next click on the main screen to start wifi tether and click allow access from superuser.
Now check your wifi on your computer Android Tether should come up click connect.
Now on your phone go back to access control and your computer name should come up.
Click on your computer name and click apply on the bottom of the screen.
This sounds like a lot but it works.
Thanks guys, I had to rename the network and set the security. I thought I could just leave it unsecured but I guess not. It works now...
Thats good I never had to do that. But that is the only reason why I rooted my phone was for the wifi tether.
But ...
... Do any these options allow other mobile devices to see your hotspot? I'm running stock on my rooted Rezound. I tried WiFi / Wireless Tether, Barnacle, Open Garden, etc ... They let my laptop connect, but not mobile devices. I actually like Sense, and I don't really want to bother with other ROMs right now ...
Any ideas?

The only two ways I was able to achieve wireless tether with infracture mode was to buy the vzw hotspot feature and / or install an ICS ROM. I can attest that RezROM ICS handles the free wireless tether app flawlessly for me (after which I killed the VZW premium service).

What on earth?
On your Sprint Evo 3D, you're trying to use
- Clear WiMax 4G (not Sprint's)
- on the Boost Mobile network
- with a Comcast modem
- to play video games
This makes absolutely no sense -- slow down, son! What exactly are you trying to do here?
If you mean you just want to get your 4G hotspot working (regardless of provider), you obviously shouldn't use the built in Sprint hotspot (even the hacked one). You're going to have to screw around with Wifi Tether for Root (google it) or Barnacle, potentially in ad-hoc mode. Some tools (including the official hotspot tool) and some tethering modes pretty much tell the WiMax tower to assign a new IP to the broadcast, effectively giving your computer or laptop a distinct IP from the phone. This is why they don't work, and it's also how the company finds out. Clear probably sees this secondary IP request produced by the tethering app, notes that it isn't the IP configuration you set up with them (or paid for), and blocks your service.
Your solution? Get the phone working again, then use a different form of tethering or a different mode. Ad-hoc mode (Barnacle) and wired tether (PDANet) are practically guaranteed to work, unless Clear has a way of sniffing packets for routing protocols.

The Sprint WiFi tether does not work with 4G (clear). You'll need to use WiFi tether or the others. Wi-Fi tether works great and it's free. Check the boxes that say MSS clamping and routing fix (something like that).

I have searched extensively on Google, and XDA but can't find the right answer.
I want to tether my phone. I can do this directly in Android but my current carrier brings up a message in the browser saying it's not supported on my current plan.
I'm addressing this, but in the mean time I'm curious if there is a way round it, hypothetically.
I have seen some Apps, such as ClockWork Mod Tether, but since my phone is rooted I wondered if there is a more elegant solution that doesn't involve any software to be added to my PC.
I read about using TB to freeze a specific App/Process but couldn't find any details.
Any advice would be great,

HOW have you not heard of android wifi tether? One of the first reasons I had for rooting the first Android phone I got.
There's also Barnacle Tether, available on the play store.
Guess Barnacle is gone... but there are other tethering apps on the play store though.
And I'm wrong again. Barnacle is still there, but doesn't show up when I search from my phone. How curious.

I appreciate the reply, but if you read my post again the issue I'm having is not an app to enable wifi tether directly on the handset, it's that the packet data is being detected as not from the phone so I get a message, on the computer, in the internet browser saying my priceplan doesn't include tethering. Oh, and as for the apps not showing up, the mobile phone providers asked google to block these apps for certain customers.. if you connect to a wifi network when in flight mode, and go the google market, you should still be able to see them...

Initially when I first posted I was trying the built in app but I downloaded the app you suggested anyway, but it didn't work. would connect to the computer but no data connection. Unsure if its an app problem or still a three problem, but I don't see how this app would fix the three problem. Does it somehow mask the PC data connection??? I couldn't see anything in the settings or set up that suggest that it would, it just looks like a more feature rich wifi hotspot app?? In addition I found mention that that others with my issue have also tried these apps like barnacle and it didn;t resolve the problem....

They can suspend your service if they discover you are doing tethering on your device if you are not alowed in your current plan.
I Hope you wont have any issues.
Otherwise it is possible that the sim card lock the feature even on rooted phone when detect thetering or it is impossible ?

yes I suppose they could do, but like I say I'm resolving this with my contract. It's more that I'm curious how they are doing it, and on principle don't like being told what I can and can't do
It can't be a sim lock.
I just tried tethering a Macbook, and amazingly that worked!.. SO, It must be something to do with the Packet Headers I'm guessing.. Or they are doing some other more detailed packet sniffing... It means there is definitely a software route around it... Need a clever developer to read this thread
I guess clockworkMod Tether might work, but I want a solution without a PC install..

They are blocking the port 80.. they sent you to their walled garden page. I think its on your provider proxy side now

When you use thetering, you embark to the provider internet network.
for example my provider is Bell Canada and their proxy is web.wireless.bell.ca
this one is for the device internet
for the thetering one they use another configuration settings when i connect my device to the computer.
What happen is when you plug your device to the computer, a signal is sent to the provider stating you entered in thetering mode. You don't have access to thetering so your internet connection is limited to the walled garden of the provider stating you are not subscrided to the service. Thats why i think they blocked the port 80 on your device and redirect you to that page.
Now for the Macintosh story.. It is not impossible that you can connect without problem with a mac and safari. I know a lot of people emulating a handled device with the Mac and the safari browser and those peeps didnt had a thetering plan.
The differences came with the drivers installed. Mac OS one are quite different in term of functionality than windows, thats why maybe the provider is able to sniff more easily people using windows but i am not a senior programmer. I am currently taking courses to become one but for now it is only suppositions. If i am wrong feel free to correct me but I am quite sure about what i am saying and that's why you dont have issues with a mac

This sounds correct to me. I'm pretty annoyed though. Only had the contract a month, I was told I could move onto a more expensive plan within contract if I needed more allowance etc.. Phone up 3, not only do they not let you PAY MORE for a different plan, but they also don't let anyone shift onto the one plan ever, unless its a new contract.. So basically **** them... so even if I want to pay extra for tethering I can't... absolute nonsense...
I had the same issue with three. I downloaded masqued crusader from play store. Activated it and then started wireless/usb tether. It worked. That was a while back tho. On a payg sim card on a galaxy s on gb. Its worth a try though.

I have rooted and am looking for a wifi tether option. Is there anything available for the G3 yet other then paying Verizon? Thank you in advance for your help
I'm looking for options and waiting to buy until there is one.
use this
I used to use Barnacle Wifi Tether back in the OG Droid days before roms had it built in:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.szym.barnacle&hl=en
It's what i'm using now and it still works well.
Doesn't seem there's anything yet. I can confirm Foxfi does NOT work on the verizon g3

I can confirm that Barnacle does NOT work!
I am rooted and have tried almost every method to no avail. I'm hoping for a fix before my 30 day return window closes cause without hotspot or tether the G3 is useless for me.
Ditto..

I have tried just about all the methods I can think of and no dice... I'd pitch $20 towards a bounty for real wifi tethering. I think it's absurd that something that is basic functionality of the device, is blocked by the carrier so you can be forced to pay their fee. I'm already paying them $200+ a month, and they want me to pay more for something my phone already does?

I'd be willing to put into a bounty pot too
This worked for me
I was able to follow the directions at droidviews.com/how-to-enable-wifi-tethering-on-verizon-lg-g2-vs980/ using the 4.4.2 modified provision. I take no credit for it, but It does seem to work for the G3 as well.
*Edit - It only works after you change the name of the device. Once the hotspot feature is removed it will not reconnect. You'll have to go back into Set Up, and select "Back to Defaults" and save. This will free up the MHS again for that 1 time use. Anyone know of a way to make it permanent?

What i usually do is either change the channel or frequency. Its not permanent, but its better than going to default every time

I just found that Wifi Tether Router from the Play store works great now! I found it on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/help/g3-hotspot-hack-t2812305/post54329287
I use the following settings from the dev, and it works great!
For LG G3 using this config
Interface wlan0
Method 3 - HostApd
Channel 1
Encryption wpa2-psk
Drivers nl80211
"HostApd Patch" <- UNCHECKED
One oddity with WiFi Tether, when you Disable, it doesn't automatically release the WiFi -- my tethered device (the tablet I'm writing this on) still shows a connection to my SSID.
My settings are the recommended ones for G3 (I didn't have to touch any of them, that's how it installed).
It does seem to release the port if you specifically turn WiFi back on on the phone, though I'm not certain -- I see multiple available wireless networks in my WiFi settings, a positive sign.
Net, I'm happy with it (had it running about 6 hours so far today), and hopefully the dev will issue an update to truly release the WiFi on the phone when you Disable.

I have noticed the same thing, and if I enable and disable the wifi on my phone it does work. It seems the easiest solution so far. I know someone emailed the dev about the issue with it releasing the wifi. Hopefully it will be corrected soon. It's not that big of an inconvenience for me though. Far less than not having wifi at all, and better than using the hack for the stock hotspot which requires changing a setting and setting back before it will work.
Agree, I prefer it to the modded hotspot apk approach. Time to restore the original two hotspot files
Thank you...I just tried it and it is working

The developer of WiFi Tether was very quick in responding to me, already generated an update that I just tested, fixing the bug. It now, correctly, stops sending the SSID when you select Disable.
I expect he will post the update officially reasonably soon.
Work great! Thanks!
