I have rooted and am looking for a wifi tether option. Is there anything available for the G3 yet other then paying Verizon? Thank you in advance for your help
I'm looking for options and waiting to buy until there is one.
use this
I used to use Barnacle Wifi Tether back in the OG Droid days before roms had it built in:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.szym.barnacle&hl=en
It's what i'm using now and it still works well.
Doesn't seem there's anything yet. I can confirm Foxfi does NOT work on the verizon g3

I can confirm that Barnacle does NOT work!
I am rooted and have tried almost every method to no avail. I'm hoping for a fix before my 30 day return window closes cause without hotspot or tether the G3 is useless for me.
Ditto..

I have tried just about all the methods I can think of and no dice... I'd pitch $20 towards a bounty for real wifi tethering. I think it's absurd that something that is basic functionality of the device, is blocked by the carrier so you can be forced to pay their fee. I'm already paying them $200+ a month, and they want me to pay more for something my phone already does?

I'd be willing to put into a bounty pot too
This worked for me
I was able to follow the directions at droidviews.com/how-to-enable-wifi-tethering-on-verizon-lg-g2-vs980/ using the 4.4.2 modified provision. I take no credit for it, but It does seem to work for the G3 as well.
*Edit - It only works after you change the name of the device. Once the hotspot feature is removed it will not reconnect. You'll have to go back into Set Up, and select "Back to Defaults" and save. This will free up the MHS again for that 1 time use. Anyone know of a way to make it permanent?

What i usually do is either change the channel or frequency. Its not permanent, but its better than going to default every time

I just found that Wifi Tether Router from the Play store works great now! I found it on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/help/g3-hotspot-hack-t2812305/post54329287
I use the following settings from the dev, and it works great!
For LG G3 using this config
Interface wlan0
Method 3 - HostApd
Channel 1
Encryption wpa2-psk
Drivers nl80211
"HostApd Patch" <- UNCHECKED
One oddity with WiFi Tether, when you Disable, it doesn't automatically release the WiFi -- my tethered device (the tablet I'm writing this on) still shows a connection to my SSID.
My settings are the recommended ones for G3 (I didn't have to touch any of them, that's how it installed).
It does seem to release the port if you specifically turn WiFi back on on the phone, though I'm not certain -- I see multiple available wireless networks in my WiFi settings, a positive sign.
Net, I'm happy with it (had it running about 6 hours so far today), and hopefully the dev will issue an update to truly release the WiFi on the phone when you Disable.

I have noticed the same thing, and if I enable and disable the wifi on my phone it does work. It seems the easiest solution so far. I know someone emailed the dev about the issue with it releasing the wifi. Hopefully it will be corrected soon. It's not that big of an inconvenience for me though. Far less than not having wifi at all, and better than using the hack for the stock hotspot which requires changing a setting and setting back before it will work.
Agree, I prefer it to the modded hotspot apk approach. Time to restore the original two hotspot files
Thank you...I just tried it and it is working
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Free mobile app
The developer of WiFi Tether was very quick in responding to me, already generated an update that I just tested, fixing the bug. It now, correctly, stops sending the SSID when you select Disable.
I expect he will post the update officially reasonably soon.
Work great! Thanks!

I am wondering what the magic trick is to tethering?? I have tried literally every wireless/wired tether app out there and nothing is consistent. To get it to connect to my desktop wirelessly, I have to enable it, then connect on my desktop, then disable it, disconnect on my desktop, then enable and connect again. This is every single time. Web pages load about the same as my ATT dsl, downloads are a LITTLE faster, and other third-party programs (Skype, Halo 2, etc.) magically stop for no reason at random times, all this while my phone is just sitting on my desk next to my desktop and I haven't touched a thing, not to mention I do frequent speed tests right after these programs quit and I am still getting 11mbps-16mbps down......WAYYYYY faster than my horrible ATT dsl, which tops out at about 5.10mbps down.
I really really really want to dump my DSL and just tether from my phone to save $20/mo, but this is incredibly frustrating......wondering what the magic trick is to get it to work more solidly?
BTW, my Thunderbolt is running LiquidSmooth AOSP 3.0 ROM and my desktop is a Dell XPS 8100, Intel i7 processor with 2.8Ghz and 8gb of RAM, if that helps.

I don't know why you are trying to "connect to my desktop wirelessly"... Does your desktop have a wireless network card ? If not, you have to use USB tethering to provide 'net access to the desktop from your phone's data connection.

Yup, brand new Asus Wireless-N USB Adapter.
I don't know about wireless, but I use wired tethering via PDAnet. its very stable and I don't have any problems with it except one. occassionally, after a few hours(or if I use 1GB+ of data), it will then get really slow. ill have to temporarily turn off the phone's radio & then back on and everything returns to normal.
I do however feel it is an issue with the Thunderbolt as I have done the same thing with a Bionic and the Bionic never has the issue.
I use Wifi Tether v3.1-beta6. All I had to do to get it to connect was go under settings and be sure routing fix is checked. Connects to my laptop instantly and I get full 4g speeds.

No "trick" needed. Pay Verizon for tethering, and use the app they provide. Works just fine, no hassles.

Totally uncalled for. Troll elsewhere Mike. According to Block C provisions Verizon is required to allow us unlimited LTE data AND access to all apps *Even ones that allow tethering* They're trying to dodge a bullet claiming "Network Management" as the reasoning behind data caps and tether blocking.
Now as per the OP- I use default USB tethering built into CM7 and have had decent connection speeds / pings on 3g and 4g and I can watch Netflix / play Rift / connect to Vent / whatever without random disconnects. I'd go ahead and assume your wifi card on the computer just isn't playing nice with the wifi tethering and try a USB option before ripping your hair out in frustration.

First, you're wrong. You've stated something as fact which has not been decided. If you believe your interpretaton of the Block C restrictions is correct, get the FCC to do something about it, or successfully sue Verizon. Until you do that, tethering without paying for the feature is a violation of the contract you agreed to when you signed up for service.
Also, the rules put in place say nothing about providing such service at no cost. Verizon does not prohibit tethering, they just charge you for it. They allow unlimited usage, they just charge for it. Where's the violation?
Now stop ripping off legitimate tethering users (by stealing bandwidth which should be available to them) and VZW. Your rationalization of theft simply shows that you are a reprobate.
So back on topic of the op, i had some issues with the 605.5 base roms, but not older 605.0 and 605.3 based. I checked for the tetherguard.apk and haven't see it in any of the roms i've been trying. If you're using a sense based and having issues, try an older base rom, worked for me.

What rom are you using and having success with? I'm currently on BAMF Forever 1.0.9 and at times its fine and other times my speed tests show 12-13mbps on my desktop I'm tethering too, yet many simple web pages won't load.
And what is Tetherguard?
I'm running a 605.5 based Rom and can tether no problem and full 4g speeds. I use wifi tether 3.1 beta6. Change device profile to thunderbolt and make sure routing fix is checked in settings.

i'm running killasense 3.2 (thanks orkilla! great rom) and everything works very very well.
under setup-method, i manually selected soft-ap. most phones need an access point-style connection, iphones and ipads can do ad-hoc but not any other phones, and my laptop had problems with ad-hoc on occasion.
* radios should be 0906 or newer. mine are super stable... both 3g, 4g and wifi!
* wifi tether 3.0 beta 6
* device-progile -> thunderbolt
* setup-method -> softap
check the following
* wifi driver reload
* mms clamping
* routing fix
then... UNCHECK disable wake lock
bam, should be good. also, delete the wireless network from your computer. network sharing -> wireless networks -> find and remove. then reconnect, should be good to goooo
Ok maybe its just me not finding this out till right now but you can Pair your Phone to your Tablet, then in Settings hit Internet access via tether and Bam !!
Internet Access !! Not rooted
Figure I pass this along to those that dont know.. Free interwebs !!
Yup. 10char
Paired my galaxy s II to my tablet through bluetooth. I enabled bluetooth tethering but still can't get an internet connection. Under bluetooth settings it says next to the galaxy s II - Paired but not connected
you have to hit the little wrench next to it and go to enable internet access
hmm the wrench gives me -
xxxxx options
Rename Device
Unpair
Pofiles
xxxxx being the name of my phone and nothing underneath profiles
if able to, use wifi tethering instead. BT slowestof tethering methods. but if wifi won't work, BT is better than no connection at all. Barnacle or Wifi Tether are good apps to use. phone with internet connection needs root for it to work. so o guess if your phone not rooted and BT tether works, its better than nothing. lol

You have to be rooted and have a kernel that supports wifi tether. Thenn you have to run a .zip patch through the recovery screen just Google your device and include wifi tether and/or patch. There are hundreds of how to writeups.

easy solution then. if u rooted already, just Google the wireless tethering apk and Barnacle apk. and you should be able to tether over wifi without having to pay for the plan. as long as you have a data connection and don't go overboard on the tethering like doing huge downloads n such.
Yeah I know I can install the apk's and make it work but I am a little afraid of getting caught and losing my grandfathered unlimited data plan. I read once where they can see that you are tethering since the MAC address of the device using the data is embedded in the transmission or something like that.
Any Verizon phones successfully connected?
If you have a Verizon phone and can bluetooth tether please say which model you have. I unfortunately bricked my HTC Incredible trying to follow some convoluted process for downgrading and then rooting.
So, yeah, I have to get a new phone and would like to know which one I should get that will allow me to bluetooth tether without rooting.
BTW, I am getting really frustrated with Android and the tweaking, hacking, and manipulating just to get functions to work. I don't have an Apple bone in my body, but I envy them for ease of use.
I have unlocked, rooted, flashed the CleanROM ICSE 3.6 from scrosler, and have also been able to overclock my Rezound with SebastianFM's kernel. Everything is working great. The only problem is that I can't get the Mobile Hotspot to work; both the built-in VZW app and the WiFi Tether app that was integrated into the ROM fail to emit a wifi signal for my laptop.
On the VZW Mobile Hotspot app, when I tick the checkbox to turn it on, it'll say "processing..." for about 20 seconds and then un-tick the check mark.
On the Wireless Tether app, I am able to turn it on but once started, a message pops up saying "Tethering started with errors! Please check show log."
I had this same problem a couple months ago when I temp rooted my phone, but a hard reset and un-root did the trick and MHS was working again. However, this is a perm root and flash, so I can't use the same resolution. A hard reset isn't working.
I have the $30 Mobile Hotspot feature added to my plan, so actually paying for it isn't the problem. I'd actually prefer the VZW app to work. Can anybody help me out?
edit: Just saw some threads from people who have already posted this question. Searched the Development forum but didn't think to search here! Sorry!

The trick with the Wireless Tether app is to make sure that you have the settings correct. You may have found this answer already else where but here it is again.
You need to set the Device-Profile to Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)
Change Setup-Method to Netd (master)
Check the Routing Fix box
The rest of the settings are up to you.
These settings are described in the developer's first post under the Wireless Tether section found here.
I ran across those settings last night. They did help, as my laptop was able to detect AndroidTether and there were no errors on Wifi Tether on my phone. However, when trying to connect, it gets stuck at Limited Access or No Network Access on my laptop. I tried changing properties on the laptop from security type to encryption type, but didn't seem to help.
Any advice? Like I said, I really do not mind paying $30 for the capability for the Mobile Hotspot, I just need it working again for school! Something about rooting the Rezound blocks the capability of the tick box staying checked after processing.
I'm gonna try to flash another ICS Rom and see if it helps. I'll update afterwards.
EDIT: Got it working by reflashing without the overclock kernel!

3 Days after purchasing my phone from Sprint. I rooted, unlocked, S-OFF and put ViperMAX 1.0.1 my phone.
I mainly use my cell phone for wifi tethering for my other devices: asus transformer, ipad and laptop so wifi tethering is very important to me. I tested and used the native wifi app for about a week and found that the internet on my phone would go on and off from time to time making certain things like streaming and downloading files a big pain. I would lose connection all the time and it was a complete waste of my time trying to connect. I researched and applied every update and everything possible to get the native wifi tethering working but I never got the performance I wanted. I gave in and purchased this app for 2 bucks and followed the settings above. Everything works great!
After about 3 weeks of testing and using this app, I did want to make sure credit is given here. The app has stabilized my internet while broadcasting my wifi tethering and I can be tethering for hours without any worries. I've left the wifi tether app on for 10+ hours and because my internet connection was good, I was able to stream/download steadily for the entire 10+ hours. Note: This app reminds me of the old old wifi tether apk.
Only two things I would want from this app is maybe a function to change the background of the app and being able to usb tether with this app so I don't have to go through other apps to do so. Both are very minor things and my other all experiences with this app has been good. I hope this helps someone who has/or been having the same problems as me resolve the issue. *Remember to follow the steps from the first post EXACTLY*
Thanks to the initial post and the developer!
Does Grasso's app work with rooted, unlocked, S-OFF, stock ROM? Or must I have a custom ROM as well? Like many, I've had a rough time getting wifi tether to work on the One max.
Should be able to edit system\customize\ACC\default.xml and shouldnt have to remove an apps
I was using FoxFi while on JB but ever since I upgraded to KitKat it then said I needed a tethering plan. So I tried this app with your settings and it works like a charm. Thanks.
Like the thread says, wondering if anyone has been using Tasker and their Z3V. More specifically, has anyone used a profile to activate/deactivate WiFi tethering using Tasker?
I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus, very hesitant on getting a new phone on VZW as it seems like our selection is limited to rootable/unlockable phones. The Nexus 6 seems to be buggy, and too large. The Z3V seems like a great phone but it being unlockable is making me hesitant on buying it. I obviously would like to remove all the bloatware but it seems like most of you guys here are loving the phone regardless of Root/Unlock.
The main thing I use my phone for is automated WiFi tethering (activating my hotspot) when I get into my car. I just want to make sure this feature will still work on the Z3V without root access using Tasker and/or Secure Settings.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: Bought the phone, setup a profile with Tasker and Secure Settings. Works like a charm!!!
I'm using tasker for Auto Off Unpaired Bluetooth and automated Wi-Fi when nearing two saved points (home and work).
I'm still working out the latter, but I still need some help in that. And it seems the auto Bluetooth profile is a bit glitchy and shuts off my Bluetooth overall when I connect both my Smartband and SBH50 headset together. I'd appreciate to get some input as well.
Anyhow, I can pretty much confirm root is not needed for tasker.
Thanks for the response. Do you mind creating a temporary profile to see if it works without root? You can have anything trigger like if connecting to a Bluetooth device, then automatically start WiFi tethering. My main concern is if WiFi tethering works in Tasker without root. If so, I'm buying this phone!!!

A lot of the tasker profiles can be used without root on the phone. It's only a few more advanced and technical profiles that will tell prior to use that it will require root.
Even without tasker, the phone can greatly alone as it is to last you quite about two days of moderate use.

Right, and root access is not required to enable WiFi tethering, however, I am using a custom ROM which has WiFi tethering enabled. I'm just not sure if the Z3V will have WiFi tethering enabled on the stock ROM (in which case it would be "x"ed out in tasker if not available).

I just hope it's not as buggy as people are reporting on the Nexus 6. The phone is great working as is right now LOL
One thing I'm curious is what other people could add to this phone with Tasker? The wifi location sort of thing isn't working 100% well with me, and I look at a lot of other profiles to see that the phone could already d most of it itself.
@ConanOBrien What do you usually use besides your tethering?

One thing I'm curious is what other people could add to this phone with Tasker? The wifi location sort of thing isn't working 100% well with me, and I look at a lot of other profiles to see that the phone could already d most of it itself.

The main one is enabling WiFi tethering when I get in my car. Note, that WiFi tethering does not work natively with tasker. It shows enabled but when you actually select it, it will give you an error and turn into a red-X. There are probably other features that show they're enabled but when you click it will show the red-X. In order to get tethering to work, I had to use the Secure Settings plugin.
What's the WiFi location issue you're referring to?
I'm currently only using tasker for tethering for my Z3V. I am going to create one to activate/deactivate WiFi when it detects I'm at home/leaving home.

Yeah that's exactly it right there. Activating and deactivating Wi-Fi when I'm at home or leaving home. It disconnects and not re-enable when I'm at home after deep sleep. I follow the exact profiles/tasks posted online, but it's not successful.
