[Q] Is there any way to DOWNGRADE to eclair 2.1 ? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this might sound ridiculous to some people, however I found Eclair to be better to use (when I had the Galaxy S I9000) compared to Gingerbread which I am using as of now on the Galaxy S2.
For obvious reasons, samfirware doesn't list 2.1 in the list of firmware for the galaxy s2.
I am keen to know whether there is a way to do this WITHOUT rooting...
If, rooting is a must, then where can I get the correct ROM if there is a 2.1 option available for this phone.
Thanks in advance,

2.3.3 is the oldest android ever made for this device, both officially and unofficially. So no, there is no way to do that and i doubt there ever will be...

thanks a lot buddy.
appreciate the info...

Wow... Eclair was sooo slow on the galaxy s haha
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

I personally don't see why you'd wanna downgrade. Doesn't matter how you justifiy it Gingerbread is the oldest. You'd have to cook a ASOP froyo ROM. Too much work for a device that I'm sure is getting put on ICS.

You can't downgrade below the version that came pre-installed on the device. Can't go below 2.3 man!

preferred the look of eclair admittedly but gingerbread will no doubt be quicker etc.... I just miss the old battery icon..

[Q] when are we getting Android 2.2 or 2.3?

does anyone know roughly when we are getting the official Android 2.2 or 2.3? I am curious...if its not any time soon, then I'll probably just root it and flash it myself. let me know. thanks
I work for verizon and just got an email, it will officially launch the 77th of Nevuary...
J/k
No one knows, I do work for big red and can tell you theres been no talk that I have caught wind of. You're best off flashing yourself. Why wait for an ota update when theres a few options that are a lot faster and cool than any official release will ever be.
Within the next 12 years sometime.

I really loved Samsung's hardware over every other thing out there. But their lack of updating has made HTC my next go to Android.
Better stock UI, unlocked bootloader, and by far faster at getting updates out. Plus cyanogenMod works on like every HTC device and that looks really nice.
Can't believe sammy f'ed up this bad on their galaxy s phones. Especially considering how many were sold.
Just root, there's barely a chance that we're going to see an official update.
With accessories sold that require 2.2 to fully function, of course there will be an official update. Why do people not understand that?
This really sucks...I was hoping to hear some good news. The upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 was definitely a noticeable improvement on the droid. I suppose I'll have to root it now.

I miss my Droid. I'm thinking of buying another one. I miss Gingerbread.
Thought I'd jump in before the lock. I was running 2.3 on my eris just fine and it also never received a official 2.2 update.(thanks kaos)
To answer the ops question, no one knows when it will be released.
Just root and flash sc 2.9.1
At this point the only thing the offical release will give us is source for better kernal mods

[Q] My new Samsung galaxy S2 SGH-I777

Hello all
First of all im not good english because my main language is italian anyway:
Im new i receiv this phone for a fews weeks ago my father gave me as gift from china.
Im using cyanogen mod 7 and i have kernel like 2.6.35.7-gedb93be [email protected] #1
The question is this: How i can update firmware automatic without doing so complicate and easy way to do??
I heard most people use SGH-I9100 and update with program Samsung Kies easy.
Well for this SGH-I777 cannot use kies and doesnt work either.
Any suggestion? Maybe a nice alternative for update in future?
Hope this information help a bit
Thank for support!
Alan
I'm pretty sure that's only possible if you have rom manager pro ...sort of , I'm pretty sure if you want to update you have to download and flash the update
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Kies + cm7 would never work anyway. Cm7 is an aosp rom and kies only works with Samsung builds.
Sent from my HTC PH39100
If you are trying to update CM7 to newer builds you can use rom manager paid app and have access to it. OR you can also download the newer CM7 updates from here http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=galaxys2att
If you are wanting to upgrade the stock samsung firmware then you will need to go back to stock samsung rom for kies to work I think.

Thanks for all guys i paid premium rom manager and there seems all ok!
Remain only a problem about NFC when i go setting wireless + NFC its show me grey out why? doesnt work?
NFC is not enabled yet on the AT&T version of this phone. Some developers have made progress in getting the phone to recognize the NFC chip, but no one has been able to enable full functionality of NFC.
Oh so i have to wait for next update version cyanogen mod for fix this problem? I hope so because need a lot nfc :s! thanks for quick reply u guys are great
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
Right now, NFC working in CM7 is still quite a ways away... I have only succeeded in partial functionality with official Samsung firmware.
The problem is that the AOSP/CM7 Nfc.apk does NOT like our stock device's JNI libraries (crashfest) - but using the Nexus S JNI libs causes the behavior you describe.
Aosp? Ehm well im a noob lol i dont understand at all about technology especial telephone instead computer antway i try to learn as quick as i can :/

Learning
I hear you, man. After the last few years with iPhones, I am learning a ton since coming here.
AOSP is Android Open Source Project. It is often used to mean plain android without any 3rd party changes like HTC sense or Samsung TouchWiz.
Cyanogen builds their ROMs straight from AOSP. Other devs start with already modified versions. For example UnNamed and Serindipity are built off of the Samsung modified android that came on our phones.

Lol now understand clear thank a lot! Too bad that i couldnt use nfc right now....i wonderf when can be able to enable? :S any clues?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
Rule number one of Cyanogen Mod is do not ask for dates. I would say that applies here too. Even if the devs can get NFC to work it is very unlikely we will be able to use google wallet, which is the big draw for a lot of people.

I knew some of what you were talking about, but I am a little unclear about the link between AOSP and stock Android. They don't actually put out anything that is usable by average consumers, right? Their output is solely for the dev community?

My New rooted phone
Hello, I am a newbie to this whole rooting thing. I just had my phone rooted with UnNamed ROM v2.2.1 so far the phone has been really fast and smooth. Its a nice clean setup. The big question is, now what? What should be my next step? Nothing big since I`m still learning. Maybe a theme? I not sure. Thanks for any input. Have a great night.
Do whatever you feel like doing, or leave it as it is if it works for you. That's the beauty of Android, you always have choices. Enjoy your phone, it's a beast.

Gingerbread ROM on Galaxy SIII

Howdy,
For testing purposes I want to load a pre-ICS ROM on my GalaxyS3. I need the flash built in that got dropped with ICS.
Has anyone tried this? If so, what are recommended ROMs?
If no one has done this, what ROMs are closest to what the S3 runs and would stand the greatest chance of working?
Thanks,
Joe
Presume this is a test to see how fast you can brick your SGS3 .
Adobe Flash player works on ICS .
jje
now this was a unique question. in the world of jb you are looking for gb
oh go on, do it, testing, testing

Like JJegan has already mentioned Adobe flash was dropped for JB not ICS
This is I think the 4th "can I put gingerbread on x" thread I have seen on xda, pretty sure its the second in the S3 forum and also there were two in the gnex forums if my memory serves me right.
As you can imagine they were met with complete and WARRANTED hostility.

to be equally fair, i'm in the same boat. i had a captivate for a while, loved the gb roms i flashed constantly to find my favourite. bought an s2 and absolutely love the phone. i hard bricked my previous s2, i dont think i had the right kernel, something i did was for a non canadian version of the s2. after i sold that one i bought another brand new s2. the s3 was around for a little while at this point but my girlfriend has a galaxy nexus and her sister an s3 and i just dont like the way ics and jb look, feel and operate. it felt like switching from windows to a mac after using windows for years. i would go to close a window and the 'x' was in the upper left and not right like windows.
its a personal opinion, i'm sure in many ways firmwares past gb are better in many quantifiable ways, but i just dont like em. not to mention the stupid physical home button like some loser iphone. i love the 4 backlit buttons that samsung uses on many devices like the blu ray player i have. it's just awesome.
anyway, long story short - is there any other demand worth warranting a dev to make a gb rom for phones past that version of android?
in closing, think of the amount of roms out there for the captivate which are based on froyo people still use. gb ics and even jb roms are available but many people still prefer the look and feel of froyo.
anyway, long story short - is there any other demand worth warranting a dev to make a gb rom for phones past that version of
Got a couple of thousand to spare might interest a dev otherwise not likely .
Try one of the developer forums where devs have a contact or question route .

Updating Galaxy 5 (USA)

Hey guys,
I have a question about the Galaxy 5 (usa) edition. Is it possible to update to 2.3.6? I don't know the difference, but heard from a friend that there was a update.
Don't bother to update it. 2.3.6 has patched a lot of the loop holes that were in 2.3.5 so rooting and adding custom roms/kernels is going to be pretty hard. However, I believe your friend is referring to the GP 3.6 and 4.2 since those two come with 2.3.6 as the stock version. Here is a custom hacked rom that use the 2.3.6 firmware as a base http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1579774.
Hope it helps and if it does can you please thank me ^_^

There's not much of a difference... xxkph I think was supposed to fix WiFi issues and xxkpl changed the lock screen. But those or any ROM based on those will get you 2.3.6. Just make sure you have entropy's kernel installed so your buttons work.

They also added an update option about device. In addition there is a "dock" app that's hidden as 2.3.6. It allows you to set the device to do something when it is connected to a dock.

Official ICS - Worth upgrading?

Hi im a GS1 owner, soon maybe getting the GS2 and i wonder if i should upgrade it with the stock 4.0.4 or stay on 2.3.6.
(im staying stock for a while then rooting changing roms etc)
From some i heard the batterytime was not as good as in GB. From some it was smoother in ICS.
If you have upgraded to ICS (Stock) not custom, did you regret it or is it better?
Stock ICS is uglier than stock GB. ICS has better battery life and of course, the new features of ICS.

Yeah, it's definitely worth it.
If you face any problems after upgrading, then search the thread first for similar issues before opening a new thread.
Good luck

You can try ofc and downgrade to Gb if Ics doesn`t suites your needs. My S2 is quite new, has only a month and it came up with Ics 4.0.3 installed.
The best way is to try for yourself and judge then what to do. The process of flashing is so simple as you surely know.
Cheers and welcome to S2 comunity.
