Updating Galaxy 5 (USA) - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Hey guys,
I have a question about the Galaxy 5 (usa) edition. Is it possible to update to 2.3.6? I don't know the difference, but heard from a friend that there was a update.

Don't bother to update it. 2.3.6 has patched a lot of the loop holes that were in 2.3.5 so rooting and adding custom roms/kernels is going to be pretty hard. However, I believe your friend is referring to the GP 3.6 and 4.2 since those two come with 2.3.6 as the stock version. Here is a custom hacked rom that use the 2.3.6 firmware as a base http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1579774.
Hope it helps and if it does can you please thank me ^_^

There's not much of a difference... xxkph I think was supposed to fix WiFi issues and xxkpl changed the lock screen. But those or any ROM based on those will get you 2.3.6. Just make sure you have entropy's kernel installed so your buttons work.

They also added an update option about device. In addition there is a "dock" app that's hidden as 2.3.6. It allows you to set the device to do something when it is connected to a dock.

[Q] Is there any way to DOWNGRADE to eclair 2.1 ?

I know this might sound ridiculous to some people, however I found Eclair to be better to use (when I had the Galaxy S I9000) compared to Gingerbread which I am using as of now on the Galaxy S2.
For obvious reasons, samfirware doesn't list 2.1 in the list of firmware for the galaxy s2.
I am keen to know whether there is a way to do this WITHOUT rooting...
If, rooting is a must, then where can I get the correct ROM if there is a 2.1 option available for this phone.
Thanks in advance,

2.3.3 is the oldest android ever made for this device, both officially and unofficially. So no, there is no way to do that and i doubt there ever will be...

thanks a lot buddy.
appreciate the info...
Wow... Eclair was sooo slow on the galaxy s haha

I personally don't see why you'd wanna downgrade. Doesn't matter how you justifiy it Gingerbread is the oldest. You'd have to cook a ASOP froyo ROM. Too much work for a device that I'm sure is getting put on ICS.
You can't downgrade below the version that came pre-installed on the device. Can't go below 2.3 man!
preferred the look of eclair admittedly but gingerbread will no doubt be quicker etc.... I just miss the old battery icon..

SamSung Galaxy Player 4.2 - not rooting

I got the Galaxy player 4.0 yesterday and it got rooted using this toolkit (DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit [v4.0]) no problem .
This morning I found out about the 4.2 model so I returned the 4.0 (unrooted smoothly!) and got myself a 4.2.
I just got done trying to root it using the toolkit and it did not work. According to SamSung, the 4.2 runs the same version of Android (2.3.5) as the 4.0 but apparently whatever tweak they got on the 4.2 is preventing it from being rooted using the same method.
Anyone has any idea what I might try next to get it rooted?
Thanks!
this is Q&A not development
moved to general - this isn't development
same problem
hey i am going to get the 4.2 because it looks really nice but when i get it i want to root it right away and get 4.0 fresh on it. I know it just came out 5 days ago but is there no way to get it rooted?

By 4.0 you mean?
android 4.0 ics. i was assuming that there could/would be a rom made with 4.0 on it. either way, can it at least be rooted on 2.3.5?

Actually it is running 2.3.6 and so far from what I have read, it is much harder to root due to the exploit that was used on the 2.3.5 or earlier has been patched.
I guess we'll just have to wait one of the developers come up with something for this player.
I might just end up returning this player and get an used Galaxy Skyrocket and use that for a media player. It has more storage (16GB), slightly bigger screen (4.5"), better camera and of course LTE when I need to use it as a backup phone.
K I got it now and there is no other page with any information on rooting the4.2 so if a developer sees this could you please start looking into rotting the 4.2
I just talked to a rep from Samsung and she said they have started development on android 4.0 for the 4.2!

Are you serious?! all i could get out of them is that they have no idea when they were doing anything! thats incredible! yay !!!
But sadly that probably means we won't get it til early nxt year....

Official ICS - Worth upgrading?

Hi im a GS1 owner, soon maybe getting the GS2 and i wonder if i should upgrade it with the stock 4.0.4 or stay on 2.3.6.
(im staying stock for a while then rooting changing roms etc)
From some i heard the batterytime was not as good as in GB. From some it was smoother in ICS.
If you have upgraded to ICS (Stock) not custom, did you regret it or is it better?
Stock ICS is uglier than stock GB. ICS has better battery life and of course, the new features of ICS.

Yeah, it's definitely worth it.
If you face any problems after upgrading, then search the thread first for similar issues before opening a new thread.
Good luck

You can try ofc and downgrade to Gb if Ics doesn`t suites your needs. My S2 is quite new, has only a month and it came up with Ics 4.0.3 installed.
The best way is to try for yourself and judge then what to do. The process of flashing is so simple as you surely know.
Cheers and welcome to S2 comunity.

Galaxy Note II with jelly bean out of box, has just been announced and rumors say they will announce the ETA for jelly bean update for other devices today

S3 has fifth leaked jelly bean already. What I have heard Sammys engineers are working on s3 and note2 versions already and S2 will be released later.

ICS or JB for Galaxy Player 4.2??

Can someone port an ICS/JB ROM onto the Galaxy Player 4.2 (YP-GI1)? I really want to update my software, the 4.0/5.0 both have ICS on it and it would be great if my device could have it too, Thanks!
Development is still small. You are going to have to wait because I believe no one hasn't build a custom rom yet.

ICS porting worked chronologically:
The SGP 5.0 was the first to have working ICS ports and it took months before the Bluetooth bug was fixed.
Several months after 5.0 ports stabilized, some developers ported it to the SGP 4.0.
I suspect it worked this way, because there are a larger number of SGP 5.0 owners, hence leading to more output.
And, if my suspicions are correct, then it is going to be a very long while before the SGP 4.2/3.6 see any ports respectively, as I suspect that the number of people who own those devices is smaller yet.
It is feasible, but that would mean that a lot of our devs here who have done successful ports to the 4.0/5.0 would need their own SGP 4.2/3.6 to test their builds and ports on. And, I just don't see them spending money on an already under-supported device.
But, who knows? Crazier things have happened here on the SGP forums.
Is anyone working on this device? I have seen someone on the CyanogenMod Forums say that they have ICS on it but it's very unstable. Of course I can't believe that... But people got a root working using Odin3. If there is any developer that has this device and seeing this post, please.. reply! Thanks

Being rooted is a state of existence. You can add it or take it away at your disposal. Being rooted just means that you have the Super User binaries installed on your device. You un-root by uninstalling those binaries. Flashing a ROM with or without root simply means that the ROM you flashed has or doesn't have those binaries.
So, if you flash a rooted ROM over your currently rooted ROM, that's OK. That simply means you have older or newer binaries on your device. (And, yes. You can update Super User binaries.)
there is a rooted gingerbread stock rom, but I believe the dev that made it doesn't even have a 4.2 and had to rely on others to test it, even the 4.0 has a very small number of devs on it, and half the ones we've had in the past have moved on to newer devices. I doubt there will be any ICS/JB goodness for the 4.2 simply because there are no devs that actually own one, atleast as far as users on here go, maybe some guy somewhere might be working on it but they sure aren't here.
Yeah I used that exact ROM anyway to get the rooted gingerbread ROM but thanks anyway

[Q] Best Samsung Player 5 {rooted} Gingerbread ROM

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to a download link for the best and most complete and rooted Gingerbread ROM for the Samsung Galaxy 5.0 Player.
The one I am using was one that I believe someone used Superclick and repackaged from the stock Gingerbread OS that originally came with the device. It appears to me that it has some stability issues since it gets stuck with access files and will not boot up. I use clockword mod to restore from a good backup. As far as I can tell, the data area is where the problem is, but I can't get anymore granular than that. If I reboot half a dozen times, one of the boots will work correctly. The device will exhibit no problems whatsoever until the next power off/on.When that happens, I get frozen at the click to unlock screen.
I'd like to use Clockwork Mod to install the latest and greatest rooted Gingerbread ROM and hopefully this "corruption" issue will be resolved...maybe.
I'm also open to any other ideas.

No, I'm pretty sure R.E.D.D is only for the SGP 4.0 (YP-G1) at this time.
I think iJimaniac released a test build for the 5.0 in the middle of the thread somewhere.
