Picked up my Japanese S3 today and looking to root it. I'm reading that using the I9300 is no go since it is a completely different model number. Specs for anyone interested:

i would like to know the same...wtfusernameistaken is your nfc working...or is the app ic tag reader/writer the same thing?...or is it something i have to turn on through docomo?

The Japanese version doesn't have NFC, only Japan's long-established equivalent.
Anyway, I love the phone, but I can't wait until some of the geniuses on here come up with an easy way to root it.

Negative. Just tried to scan my edy but no joy. My nexus S grabs it fine however. Cannot wait to dump this stupid docomo rom and get a vanilla one on. That or just go back to my Nexus S.

SamMobile has a rom out for SC-06D. As soon as the DL finishes gonna give it a go since I tried the I9300 and it just black screens.
i seen that but i was pretty sure that was just the stock rom...which is really helpful if a bad rom is loaded and need to go back to stock...ive downloaded it too and keeping it to the side for emergencies....

My honest opinion is that the phone sucks. No NFC, annoying uninstallable apps, battery gets quite warm, camera is meh, Kies is basically iTunes with a different layout. I went back to my nexus S and passed the S3 off to the wife. Tried to get a galaxy nexus but it would seem that it did so bad in Japan that they liquidated their entire stock 3 months ago. Guess I'll just have to wait for the next dev phone.
The rom on sammobile is in fact the stock rom, but good to have in case.
Your first sentence had me dying. Lol I guess that sums it up, though. I guess I'll start preparing to buy a One X, though I think I'm going to attempt to get the AT&T version and have it unlocked, as it seems that model is more liked than the international version. I don't even play Words with Friends, so Tegra 3, Schmegra 3 for all I care.
In my opinion this is a beast of a phone...nfc not there..it maybe just no unlocked..the screen is great..the 2gb is a major factor...the fact it'll be one if few phones to receive the jelly bean update..even the little tv tuner which I'm sure the statewide doesn't have..the massive support for it...the camera is great, even though some might choose a third party app...people are judging the phone after a few days of use...the real beauty and love affair comes after extended use...having all this potential and being a root and or custom Rom away from unleashing it is mouth watering...already my s3 out performs my s2 in every way...and it can only get better...every day I find or notice something about this phone that makes it more and more awesome...give it a chance and don't be so basis guys...

If you lack Japanese skills I would be hesitant to root. Some of the warnings that come up will not be in english. Not to mention that all the development on the root was done by Japanese and the "documentation" will be as well.
This is my first Android device (and my first post )
I found the amount of Samsung and Docomo apps really ridiculous.
I want to get CM9 onto the device, so I can have a completely clean slate with no remnants of all the shovelware. As I'm new, I don't know how yet, but I've found several guides and videos and such for doing it for other devices, even the other versions of the Galaxy S3. Unfortunately I haven't found too much specifically for the Docomo Japan version, so I'm a little hesitant to try anything just yet. Is there anything that makes the Docomo device different from other Galaxy S3's, anything I should look out for?
One thing to note for anyone else who bought it here in Japan at Docomo, by default they automatically sign you up for a ton of their crap, iChannel, BodyMo, etc., and each one costs monthly. They're very easy to forget about. If you go digging through the "my docomo" site, through the customer support stuff, eventually you'll find the options to cancel each of the stuff they signed you up for. They really do make it hard to get to.

Well basicly i wanted to ask if its safe to buy a S3 or if those are still big risks ? ^
Just wanna know if its recommend and if it doesnt has problems ^^
I probably wont root it nor anything at the start,
First wanna be sure it works properly before ripping the guarantee apart
Probably afterwards i may root and do a cyanogen mod rom on it.
But thats still for the future and doesnt rly matter at the moment ^^

Sudden death is supposed to be fixed by the last (or the one before it) update. I don't know anything about chip brick though, so someone else might educate you on that. If all goes wrong, you can "unroot" your device.
I would suggest to wait for Xperia Z, but that's COMPLETELY (=no pitchforks and torches pls) subjective. The main reason is that Samsung is dev-unfriendly, otherwise everything is "good".
btw just a quick question,
Is there any idea about when Samsung launches 4.2.1? ^^

It has been updated since 4.1.2 I believe.
Update your phone straight away. Do it through your phone the update. About 200mb file plus some small updates.
I tried doing the update through Kies and the update failed for some reason and had to swap my phone by getting another new one because it wouldn't turn on. STAY AWAY FROM KIES.

Well Xperia Z is imo a bit to much as money goes, Galaxy s3 is alr 500 euro ;P Sony Z is like 650 euro here, So i do not realy want it for that reason alone,

The GS3's got a gpu from 2010, confirmed sudden death issues and it's unconfirmed if they've been fixed, lag everywhere because of touchwiz, dialer and contacts take a year to launch when not in memory. They could be forced to be kept in memory if you want to root and mod to fix what Samsung can't. AOSP roms that perform worse than Windows 98 (also because of Samsung's unwillingness to give us sources)
And that's not even half of it.

Ye i looked on Ebay,
They are like all 560 euro even in the UK,
And those under 500 are 470 euro wich are 8gb versions,
And you cant use MicroSDs so you are stuck on like 6gb ? 4 maybe.
And IF its broken its all that emailing and calling, Then they probably refuse and i gotta start going to LG but they dont wanna accept it due its from the UK and not Belgium so i gotta call UK and ship it to there etc etc.
I pretty much like a real shop instead of starting to buy phones that are this expensive through the internet from a diffrent country tbh.

Well, by my post counts u can telll im not a active poster here but in any case, lets get started
Device i own :
S3, GT-i9300 white
Currently running stock firmware. (gave to service centre to fix an issue and they just re-flashed the rom -.- )
Issue :
At times (not always) when i turn my screen on, it flickers a purple screen (for maybe for 0.3 seconds ) before getting back to my screen.
Ive been getting thing for a long time. I thought it was nothing, but now im worried.
I had this issue on when i had my phone brand new, when i rooted, when i using roms, etc etc.
So its like once a week i would see it.
I hope im making sense here.
So im just hoping someone out there has faced this and knows what to do, or atleast someone can guide me to a solution.
Can i ask samsung whats going on? Can this mean a possible screen replacement? (would love it, my edges arnt in the best shape )

You can ask and they may well say it requires new screen and give you the cost of replacing .

I shouldn't worry about it, mine has done that occasionally on and off for as long as I've had the phone, you could try Samsung, but the problem is getting it to do it when they look at it!
Could help if you still have the original bill when visiting your local dealer. This might be a repair under warranty circumstances.

I went ahead to the sc centre. They were of no help. They said thry wanted proof of the same. And I was like " how do I present a valid proof of this? " They told me record it on a camera and show them.
So what this means is that every time im turning my screen on im supposed to have a camera on? ???
Is there any way to force it? ?

i recently sold my iphone and bought a galaxy s4 because i had heard that its a lot faster than iphone but mine takes a long time to load an application an action to scroll around the device, basically it is generally really slow and sometimes i have to press again on the screen to do something. i have turned off animation, i dont have a live wallpaper and generally havent loaded so many apps to make it slow. what can i do? please help, im starting to regret buying it.

yes, havent changed ROM

i dont think i have updated it, it has the version i bought it with. the only thing i have changed is launcher and theme

you mean unroot right?
Don't unroot. Go into the android development and hacking forums and find a script to make your phone faster, and flash it in CWM recovery. If you can't do that, overclock your phone using the No Frills CPU Control app off the Play Store. Make sure both sliders are at the end and that your governer is Performance. Also, try out Auto Memory Optimizer, that's a good app for retaining your speed. And of course, always close apps when you aren't using them.

That's not how my friends S4 works, it is extremely responsive and fluid. Apps work without hiccups and even multi tasking is awesome. The first thing that came to my mind when you posted your phone's symptoms were, did you purchase it brand new from a shop? Is it on stock FM? Did you actually check it at the store before your purchased it?
Yours could be a FW or a HW problem. Is it possible to take the phone back to the store and have them fix/replace it before attempting software fixes?
hey i really need help i tried to fined a answer about my music player.
randomly my music stops and will not continue till i reset my phone.
its not tilt stop or any thing iim using CM11 but it happened on omni rom and cyenfox too.
it happens with every music player and rom but on Bluetooth it dosent happen only speakers and aux.
i have my galaxy s2 universal from when it lunched and it started half a year ago and didnt have any solution for it .
so again i really need with this help.

This is a 'known issue' with CM11. It happens with EVERY version of it. Some people it affects, some it doesn't........
Afraid you either live with it until a fix is found, or you revert to CM10/CM10.1/CM10.2

what i tried to tell you its with other roms too.
so there is no solution yet ?
As said earlier,all KitKat roms faces this issue.
Solutions?As of yet - NONE.
Devs are working hard on it,so there's still some hope.
This has been fixed but I forget which one fixed it. I'm sure its carbon ROM . I'm on s3 though so may not have passed down the fix to s2. I know this has been fixed but I just forget. I'll try and find the dev/rom who did it
Right pa 4.4.2 is working fine with jetaudio pro. Forget were I got that apk

M8 is a nice phone. Looks really nice and a good choice IMO. S2 thread are like crack to a crack head to me lmao. I'm addicted to them. I wish I got a new laptop and not the s3. S2 was/is a great phone and new people are getting one every day and still ask the same old questions mb is the man! Hopper8 top man and you're good self is all I see now. You're going, hopper8 will go, mb will one day go, gastown I ent got a clue were he went? Immortalneo mia but set up a good thread for me to follow lol soon it will be a sad place for me to come. And Odin is now my friend because of the s3. Am happy I never once used it on the s2 haha

is this your next phone mate (M8 hahha )? Looks amazing but they cost so much! It would be my first choice of phone but I just can't spend that much on a phone.. Think my next one will be Nexus 5 in a couple of months, it's much much cheaper. But I will be more than slightly jealous if you get the M8

Also considering the Z2 as an alternative.......The Sony *looks* easier to root, but I'm not sold on it's glass rear.....and the aluminium body of the M8........what can I say?
