Wondering if anyone's willing to do this? Now that there are a dozen or so ROMs, would be kinda cool to have a thread where there's 1 or 2 pics of what differentiates the specific ROM, and 3-4 bullet points each with features\benefits. It's gotten a bit cumbersome to have to go in and view (or not be able to in some ROM threads w\o pics) the details\differentiating factors, and would be super cool to see someone who really does use em all to put together a simple basic thread with a thumbnail and brief description, kinda like the radio\kernel threads did.

It's a good idea..
I only wish there were a dozen different roms to choose from.
Currently there are actually only 5 custom roms for our i777 phones.
(UnNamed, Perception, Serendipity, Cognition and CM7)
You must be thinking of the roms for the i9100 SGS2 international
phones and not the AT&T i777 SGS2 phones.
Remember there are two seperate forums for SGS2, one for the AT&T
i777 phones and the other for the i9100 international phones.
There are a lot more custom roms available for the i9100 phones
than for the AT&T i777 SGS2 phones at this current time.
Perhaps I should have purchased the i9100 phone like you did.

Well a simple and easy to read guide to 5 is better than no guide to nothing, hehe.
I ended up taking the leap and getting one of the i9100's (in nice looking white) while I was in Thailand this week. I was so excited to have a phone without carrier modification! After setting it up and using it for a day, I just can't get over the damn physical key in the middle of the phone. I feel so weird using the button, and after having the HTC Inspire, then Samsung Infuse, and then SGSII ATT version, I just can't go back to a sloppy physical key, so I eBay'd and sold the new white one and went back to my old ATT Galaxy S II in favor of the four keys. I figured you'd get a kick out of this.
Now I just need to figure out what ROM I can put on to allow manual network selection but still give me the amazing battery I'm getting on stock rom w\ codeworx kernel.

It all depends on your definition of litening. Some people like the added features that are built in, some don't. You can look every ROM and see people suggesting to add this or take that out. Pretty much every rom has all the bloat removed and they leave what they think is necessary. With the hardware that comes in the GSII, it will handle of lot of things without slowing it down.
yeah i was just putting it out there, raising my hand for Lite'ning and any other big ROMs from the international ver. any that maintain codec and hardware support are preferred.
Since Litening gets releases as a pre-made system image, it's a bit harder.
For whatever reason, images like these are less likely to boot than CWM-flashable ROMs. I tried to install Litening and bad things happened. (phone wouldn't boot at all past the basic splash screen).
Hey guys,
I'm new to the Android community. Im debating between OGS2 vs Skyrocket. I've been reading about how the OGS2 will have more 'developer support' than the Skyrocket. What exactly does that mean? Ive had jailbroken iphones so I know a bit bout phone modding. From what I understand, the Skyrocket has been rooted and will be getting ICS. So would it be able to use all the same hacks as the OGS2? Thanks.

NOOO the dev support on the skyrocket WILL be accute when compared to the OG SGS2. but i mean the phone just came out yesterday.

Thanks for your reply. Lol Im assuming 'accute' means 'the same' right? I guess I'm just worried if I go with the Skyrocket it wouldn't have as many themes, mods, updates, etc...

Acute being defined as small, It may or may not have the same sized community but I am going with small. With the difference in basically everything on the phone, nothing from the ogs2 will be easily ported over the skyrocket. You best bet is to get the TMob GS2 devs to make a port as that phone is far more similar to the sky rocket than the ogs2.

Yes as meaning Small, the dev support with be Minute in comparison. so if your a flashaholic u may want to get the OGSGS2
Smaller. The issue is it's different hardware than that of the International SGSGII, Sprint and AT&T SGSII.
The i777 can have ported roms due to similar hardware - much like the Galaxy S line (Galaxy S, Captivate and so on).
It's one reason I chose the SGSII.

I rooted my skyrocket and the cwm for the tmobile version is suppose to work
I also think dev support for the skyrocket will be less than the OGSGS2. I have the OGSGS2 and was a little afraid that our very talented devs would jump ship to the Skyrocket. That's why I was ecstatic to see Entropy512's latest release....Hellraiser for OGSGS2 (see dev section for thread). This opens up the very established and large i9100 dev community to our i777.
It boils down to this - i9100 has a VERY large international community behind it. The i777 is very similar to i9100 and now with Hellraiser we can even flash their ROM's. Skyrocket has a different chipset that isn't as well supported....YET. (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this).
Aah ok I see now. The difference in hardware is the reason why one has more dev support. Thanks for the explanation fellas. Unfortunately that makes my decision tougher since I was leaning towards Skyrocket but now I don't know. I don't wanna miss out on hacks and whatnot.
It doesn't make much sense that it's tacked onto the i777 forum. It'd be like putting the Infuse forum into the Captivate section.

I agree... While the two share similar names, that truly seems to be the extent of the similarities...
Can the Powers that Be consider creating a separate Forum just for the Skyrocket so as to eliminate possible confusion, especially from noobs?
I can see a whole bunch of bricked phones from people trying to flash a custom ASGSII ROM onto a Skyrocket just because they didn't know any better, and they were located in the same subforum.
We all know how much people tend to READ warnings... it's always AFTER something is F'ed up. LOL...

Worse than Infuse in the Cappy section... I wish there were a "report forum for moving" thread. At least Heimdall worked on the Infuse!

I don't mind READING info on the Ltd gs2. BUT I sure hope that any mods, roms, development WILL NOT be included into the dev section otherwise WE WILL be seeing people that are newer coming in here with their lte SGS2 and flashing i777 roms and vice versa newbs with i777 flashing i727 lte phone roms, mods, etc. and causing all kinds of issues. I hope they get their own sub forum soon before any major development takes place for it.

People are posting here because it's been the topic of quite a bit of discussion here. But if you want us to have our own forum, feel free to vote to get us one. I for one thing the Skyrocket hate is getting old quickly. It's certainly much better "out of the box" than the OG. (I certainly don't miss the button lag and lower network speeds). It will get support soon enough, and for now you can always root it and use the stock kernel.
I don't miss the middle button lag but I do miss the middle button!
Hey,
So I currently have a Motorola Atrix that I love but am selling today. I want to switch to the i777 because of better future development. The locked bootloader that the Atrix had at launch didn't help matters, although we now have CM7, MIUI, and some CM7-based ROMs. However, how far behind is the i777 from i9100 development? In other words, if the i9100 got stable CM9, for example, how long would it take us to port that?
Also, how long do you think strong development (like I see there is now) will last? For example, Captivate development is still going strong (considering they have multiple builds of ICS). Will it be anything like that?
I'm only wondering because there is a somewhat hefty price jump between a used Atrix and a used i777 which I am willing and able to make, but only if development will be strong for at least another year. How likely do you think that will be?
Just as a note, I'm not asking you guys if I should buy the i777. I'm just asking what you think development will be like a year from now, and how close we are to the i9100 development. I already read about the hardware differences between the i777 and i9100 (NFC, FM radio, home button, etc.)
Thanks a lot,
vinay427
Dev community is at about same level that the captivate was when it came out.
As for i9100 port of cm9 or any other 4.0 roms it's a matter of kernel sources being available. I've messed with kernels recently, but entropy would be the brains for that job.
Anyhow, going from your current phone to this phone will be a night and day difference.

Once kernel sources come out for ICS, we should be able to get most functions ported in a week or two. The main issue is the audio libraries - we might need some workarounds for call audio.
The other question is whether Samsung breaks the modem interface - if ICS requires new modems we might have a problem. However at least on the Infuse, modem interfaces didn't change at all from Froyo to Gingerbread.
This means that we won't be able to do much with ICS leaks for the I9100 though - we won't be able to do much until official kernel sources come out with the official release.
Yes, ICS poses some challenges for the devs here. We will get ICS through a i9100 port months, if not quarters, before we see leaks or anything official from att.
As far as gingerbread, any i9100 ROM should run on the i777. There is a "Hellraiser" package that will replace the appropriate files to make the ROM work fine.
As you said the captivate is still going strong, the i777 is the next captivate. It will be the best flagship Android phone on att until a Galaxy S III version comes over. (Unless we get a note by some miracle. Also the Galaxy Nexus could be around the corner.) If they follow the same cycle, thats fall 2012 for the att version. We can only hope att meddles with that version as little as they did the i777. I would bet there is another half upgrade between here and then (like the infuse), but, I doubt it will pull significant amounts of devs from this phone.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
Ok, thanks a lot guys! There's about a $120 jump from the i777 to the i9100, and I simply can't justify that. I considered the Skyrocket (as does everyone..) and removed it from my list due to a certain lack of development, which is why I was switching in the first place. Same with the Vivid and Nitro HD. There seems to be the most hope for the i777 out of the current AT&T line. Look for me on the i777 forums soon (hopefully)!

I'm guessing there will be compatibility issues because of the different internals but I wasn't sure, so I asked here. Thanks for all help.

Well that's a shame. I read somewhere here on the forums that though Exynos is better in stock form, our S4 will be better when the development comes in full swing because Snapdragon is better for overclocking. I'll look to the positive on this then
Besides that, completely off the original topic, do you (or anyone else) think this link below of the ICS update applies to us i717 Noters as well?
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1490986
Well, no one can be 100% positive when it comes to ATT and upgrades but the general consensus is that ICS is coming to the un branded international Note in March and Our i717 Note will get it whenever ATT gets through with it. Whenever that is??? Most people are hoping by the end of the year.
On a brighter Note, if you read the Development threads, it appears they're working on an AOKP version of ICS for our phone. So expect that ROM or one like it to come out sooner than the official update to ICS. So if you don't already know, start learning what you can about flashing ROM's.
Here's the thread about the AOKP ROM rumors:

End of the year? That's a shame. I'm semi-new to the Android experience. I got my Nook Color in December so I can flash and do the basics, but that's it. Asides from that, I really hope that "March to May" estimate on the International Note was close.

Look around, plenty of development. Just about everyone here likes the phone, except the trolls. And even then most of them probably secretly like it too.
The phone is just awesome.
Now i don't recommend branded firmware but that's okay, it's android so you will probably put CM9 in there or any other custom ROM.
Btw, there is a forum for tmobile users, nothing here (international) will work with yours and you should ask them for opinions on performance, the international is a quadcore and US variants are dual core with different specs.
Goodluck.
Phone is awesome just great support here in XDA.
my only con is the Screen break easily, not that my phone's screen break but I've always read a thread every now and then and youtube videos that the screen breaks easily. So I handled my device gently so far didn't drop it ever since day 1
I absolutely love my SIII. Particularly like the speed of the processor and the quality of the screen. And the fact that JB is available (although there is only 1 official built ATM, for Poland; but the rest of the world will have an official build very shortly).
With most of my old phones, I have flashed custom ROM's within weeks of buying. But with this one, the Sammy ROM's are excellent and 5 months in I am still using them. I have tried a couple of custom's, but keep coming back to stock ROM's (obviously rooted, and occasionally custom kernels that support CIFS).
With regards to the development, and this forum, due to the popularity of the phone it is absolutely saturated with a myriad of people. There are lots of very talented devs, who contribute loads of really excellent work. But there are twice as many "noobs" (god I hate that word), who refuse to search, research, or learn before posting inane questions. Then there are twice as many as that of people who consider it their god given right to flame anyone for not being as geeky as they are.
Bottom line - the development for this phone is excellent, and full of talented, helpful people. You just have to hunt through a ton of cr4p to find them.
I have a iphone 3gs and now i have a sg3 for my birthday present
All i can say its the best phone,it tends to get hot when u playing games but i think its normal since its a quad core.
U can flash rom, install kernel and all that.I have my sg3 for about 1month plus.
At first i have no idea wads android, wads ics wads jelly bean. But slowly i pick it up along the way.
I have the latest siyal kernel with dual boot cristelo and romow rom
Best phone
There is no cons in SGS3, nothing which I can tell at the moment.
I love it at the moment..although the Galaxy Note 2 seems to be better with the 2GB RAM tho' ;p
Note:
I am not using any custom ROMs at the moment on my S3 even after several months after buying (pre-ordered in June )...I feel that its not yet necessary for the moment...
It was different as my old HTC Desire...I have to go for custom ROMs only after 2 weeks due to the lots and lots of weaknesses HTC Desire has and I need special scripts to solve it like EXT2SD, DALVIK2SD, etc. etc. etc.
Well just after i purchased my S3, i rooted it right away. I am officially addicted to flashing stuffs. •_•
I cant find any cons on an s3, it's an awesome phone (for now; give it like 6 months more, s4's gonna come) lol

They complain because they use their phones hardcore. Plus it also depends on the rom they use. The last Tom I had before this one saved me so much battery life but with this new one I am plugged into a charger all day everyday. Just so I can use all the good features like Google now.
